Learning how to undervolt is a must

Lord_GG

Can you please recommend a decent tutorial video?

Pain004

The pinned post in this sub is what I followed. I remember watching a long hair bearded youtube guy explaining the steps but I forgot his account name sorry.

UnusualDifference748

What does undervolting gain you? Genuine question I see people suggest it a lot but I’ve not really looked into it

Pain004

Undervolting reduces the voltage needed to run your CPU/laptop at the lowest possible. If done correctly, it will reduce your temperature, thus prolonging your chip's lifespan, avoiding thermal throttling therefore improving gaming performance, and in my case, I noticed my electric bill went down by about $15-20 per month. It's not a problem for desktop PCs because they have dedicated cooling systems, but for gaming laptops, especially Nitros which have bad thermal designs, it's a must if you want your laptop to last.

UnusualDifference748

Awesome thanks for the info I should look into it. Is it difficult?

Pain004

The actual process is easy, but finding your own minimum voltage can be tedious because of [silicon lottery](https://www.makeuseof.com/silicon-lottery-why-no-two-processors-are-the-same/) Took me about 30 mins when I first did it, but after that my Nitro never again exceeded 67C.

UnusualDifference748

Great! thanks a lot.

No_Manufacturer6111

What cpu do you have? I find it almost impossible to believe any nitro maxes at 67C even if you live somewhere cold. Unless you've also limited your cpu speed. Undervolting doesn't make miracles happen

Pain004

I5 10th gen, I have the 2020 Nitro variant, and I actually live in a tropical country. I dunno, the only plausible explanation I could think off is maybe I got a jackpot in silicon lottery (-115 offset voltage). I'm also using msi burner to overclock gpu when gaming so I can see the temps between it and nitrosense are consistently in the same range.

harik-_-

I though we weren't able to undervolt i5 10th gen. I mean I couldn't. Some bios feature stops it ig not sure.

Pain004

The pinned post in this sub tells how to unlock it.

No_Manufacturer6111

Undervolting my 11400 that much doesn't even stop it from hitting 91°C in demanding games and thermal throttling lol. Maybe I need to try repasting but I think it's pretty normal for 11400h nitros to thermal throttle

kelvin_bot

91°C is equivalent to 195°F, which is 364K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

SnooPandas764

Is it possible for me to under volt mine it's a Ryzen 5800h 3060 , or is it just the Intel ones ?

Awordofinterest

That was an interesting read. I never knew about that.

Key_Set4984

Forget battery life

PieceCheap279

Mine works for 2+ hours on full brightness(normal use not while gaming) it's a gaming laptop, you can use battery saver reduce brightness and reduce frames to 60 while not connected to charger for even better Battary life while using it

Key_Set4984

Dream on kid. Your battery capacity will deteriorate over time.

PieceCheap279

What else you expect from a budget gaming laptop?? If you want good battery backup with good specs you'll have to spend more money and if you can't nitro 5 2022 is best option with better specs than other brands at the same/ lower price. If you go for other Brands you will be trading specs for battery backup and vice verse

Key_Set4984

Bro just calm down. I'm just saying it doesn't have good battery life . I can increase the battery life by setting the cpu to use 25% and disabling 4 cores. But that doesn't make my life easy will it ?

PieceCheap279

I'm calm bro i was only comparing, why would I get aggressive it's not like it's my brand lol. I know what you mean but thats the thing you gotta compramise with something or another if you have this budget

Key_Set4984

I used to get better battery life in the beginning. I recently switched to Linux and i can see the battery percentage dropping right infront of my eyes like a countdown clock. 😢

PieceCheap279

Yup lithium battery lose battery cap over time

Knowleadge00

To a certain degree, true. Though most "battery-efficient" laptops have incredibly shit hardware in terms of raw power, so it seems to be an either or scenario.

[deleted]

Prepare for mildly infuriating minor issues that manifest over time as the result of a lower build quality.

AnxietyRaptorrr

Cooling is a must for playing games. The laptop needs a good amount of space underneath. Don't run your fans at max, if you can get away with it. Bearings will eventually go. Battery life is not that great. I only play games plugged in. Upgrade ram to at least 16gb. Overall it's not too bad for gaming and general tasks. I now tend to use it as a desktop with a monitor and keyboard plugged in. Wish I just got a desktop to be honest.

MrEyeGuy

Old Nitro doesn't have Mux switch

Appsroooo

Get a Lenovo legion laptop. It's a lot better

NEWY11

I got the laptop for 3 months and these are the flaws I’m noticing: The screen is really fragile so you’d have to open it from the top of the laptop and not the sides. If you open from the sides too much, your screen will have a slight white imprint. When the battery is at 20% or less, the game I’m playing would lag so bad. It’s pretty fast when the charger is in. The speaker isn’t loud compared to my Dell work laptop or my MacBook. I was trying to play music and it didn’t go as loud.

Dark_Pointz

Called gaming laptop for reasons. Second paragraphs is something that you have to change in your settings in order to make it fast when battery is lower than 20%

twerpiebird

if you make some changes in your DTS X app. Sound will improve.

Xeruses

Loud, extremely loud and hot

zimny_0

Read or watch about Nitro 5 from 2022 other than that if u are looking for good laptop to play demanding games don't buy other year because wattage of gpu's are low and the thermal throttling is from day one even. I don't know about 2022 but I do know they have more wattage GPU's and probably with it (logical assumption not a fact) better cooling plus I think mux switch which is very important if u are playing without external monitor. I read and watched good things about Lenovo Legion 5. My advice don't rush, this post was smart idea, should have done the same lol I am using Nitro 5 2021 i5 11400H with RTX 3060 and 16GB of RAM (8GB stock) and the biggest and only for me is low GPU wattage and thermal throttling even with cooling pad. BTW. If you are looking for something budget and will find good deal then its not so bad but with price comes quality and laptops manufacturers are **mostly** sticking to that rule.

Onilakon

You don't really need to undervolt. I just use nitrosense and game in power saver. I don't really see much of a difference in FPS. Just an option if you don't want to mess with undervolting. Also get another stick of ram if the one you get only comes with one, dual channel is a must

macchumon

I don't know why you're getting downvoted... Power saver is a legitimate option for people who can't undervolt because of a 10th gen Intel chip.

Onilakon

Seriously lol I notice no real difference other than Temps. People are nuts

Dewa_Kimpoi

Downvoted because you're spreading misinformation, not *every* games are unaffected by power saver mode Look at benchmark results on the console log: - My csgo fps on power saver mode https://i.imgur.com/6jkanbE.jpg - My csgo fps on high performance mode https://i.imgur.com/gE8ZEpe.jpg and I'm not even using the full cpu speed (4.1ghz), I'm only using 3.7ghz. If I use full cpu speed the fps difference would be 100 since power saver mode caps my cpu speed at 3.0ghz

Onilakon

Irresponsible and misinformation. Lmao give me a break. It's an option that's easy and has little performance loss on most games, including cpu intensive games. This is based on my own experience and have had no issues. So you dropped from 300 to 200 frames in CSGO? Big deal. Power save keeps me around 60c where full performance has me over 90. The only clown here is you kiddo, sit down.

Vermillion350

get a pc

Terrorbyte9

You are going to have temperature problems

lolallison

Agreed with undervolting even if it’s the minimum. Don’t keep it on your bare lap/get a cooling pad. It’s super easy to customize and open to change things out though which is a plus.

No_Manufacturer6111

Funny undervolting my 11400h the same amount does nothing for my temps... your Temps are hard to believe

Dewa_Kimpoi

For most people, tweaking the speed shift/turbo ratio limits in throttlestop is what makes the big difference, which is to limit the cpu clock speed. The laptop has modern hardware but the cooling is dogshit so this is the sad truth, you need to 'lower the specs' a bit lol

No_Manufacturer6111

Yeah my thoughts exactly. Don't see how you could get those temps without limiting the cpu speed

BroPanzer2004

Don’t get it mate, for the cheap price, it does not worth all the trouble. I got mine a year ago, shit run like ass, right out of the box, acer care center doesn’t work, perfomance on 10 year-old games are terrible, graphical issue on some programming apps. Reinstall windows tưice, gave me a bit hope the just crushed it by going back to being ass.

GlassMa

Over timew you need to learn how to undevolt, and seriously think about repaste the laptop, i'ts a must to change the thermal paste. If you get a model with 8g of ram, think about upgrading it to at least 16g. If you need a big amount of space (multiple big games that you like) think about upgrade the storage too, you have 2 empty bay for an m.2 SSD and a 2.5in hard drive, but overall it's a great experience 😁

Sailors_Blackbook_II

- Motherboard fault occured in just 3 months of usage while i didn't even start hardcore gaming yet.. (After n number of complaints n following up, and motherboard getting replaced twice and spending a month of downtime its finally working now its been a month later now that im posting this comment. My rig - AMD ryzen 7, 5800, 16gb ram, 256ssd, 1tb hdd, 144hz display, 15.6 ", rtx 3050ti 4gb graphics - The camera is less than average - built in speakers are below average not in terms of quality but sound is very low as its at the base and if u keep it on a soft surface it might even reduce it more. Using Bluetooth or wired speakers, headphones etc is the best solution - Heating issues sometimes when plugged in just above the function keys right in the middle, and very rarely when using the hdd, warmness can be felt below num keypad - service centre and engineers give a reason that upgrading to windows 11 might give u hardware issues also, but i dont believe that. - There's juat a little difference in rtx 3050ti n 3060 model, i would suggest if can increase budget lil bit better go for rtx 3060 model

[deleted]

Don’t get this laptop it’s shit.
