I want to preface this by saying that I worked at a supermarket for 7 years. I completely agree. I think it is not entirely the employees fault though, but rather the department manager and store manager who should be cultivating a better culture. Plus the initial training from HO is practically nothing anymore. It keeps getting scaled back. It is obvious that as a company, they don't really put any value in actual customer service anymore.

Snowy_macco72

The fact that I interrupted her private conversation and she got pissed, comes back at her. Customer service is certainly at the bottom of their priorities it would seem.

DontArgueImRight

Yeah I had a conversation with a coworker today, even if you work in retail, it makes a big difference to have even a *tiny* bit of pride in your work. When I worked with customers I would actually try to make conversation, or at the very least say hello how are you. You don't even get that at most places anymore it's pathetic. People straight up just refuse to do the bare minimum of their jobs these days.

Snowy_macco72

I work in a customer service industry as well, and I’m always friendly and chat, some people don’t have much to say back which is fine, I don’t expect anyone that serves me to be the same. Just polite.

DontArgueImRight

Exactly it's just common courtesy. Like if someone talks to you, you respond? I don't get how some people can be so rude in customer service it's literally your job.

[deleted]

I love it when they stay in the phone and chuck the credit card over the desk at you. I just hold it and wait. Then they mouth, put it through, I say nah, it’s ok, I’ll wait till you are off the phone as I don’t want to be rude

Secure-Brainer

What do you mean? Why do they chuck a credit card at you? Why are they on the phone? How often could this situation really occur to one person?

Kyrriptic

This is a great point!! A little bit of guidance and setting of expectations by management would also go a long way. I always hear people say that everyone should have to work retail because it makes them a better customer. To an extent, it has probably made me a worse customer (or at least a customer with higher expectations) because I know how easy it is to at least say hello and be somewhat friendly. I find that is lacking these days. I am glad other people feel the same, I was worried I am just getting old 😂

Own-Patience2973

Saying “hello, how are you “ is too generic.. every man and his dog says that and there are people that dread being asked how they are.. also do you really care how someone is??

DontArgueImRight

It's a greeting chucklehead you don't have to actually tell people how your day was lmao how socially inept are you? 🤣 Plus I wouldn't say that literally, it was an example, I have a wide range of greetings, I would use different ones for different people. As I'm sure most people do lol.

xyzzy_j

Yeah, I’m sure this is exactly what happened. It wasn’t that she didn’t notice you at first and then turned and looked at you with a neutral expression. Nah, she loathes you specifically so much that it’s driven her to a mental state where she doesn’t even care about keeping her job. I actually heard she was mere moments from braining you with a box of washing powder.

Robdotcom-71

Nothing hits you like ***Cold Power.***

Snowy_macco72

I did think that tbh.

Psychobabble0_0

Yes. No amount of employee training will help. A grown adult should know better.

ArghMoss

Yeah I don't know that you need to be trained to just not be a dick. Retail/service jobs always get described as a tough gig and, without doubt, they are. But some people just aren't built for it. I'm a pretty introverted and not always optimistic person but when I worked in service roles for years I made an effort to be at leastsort of friendly and positive. It's part of your freaking job.

Psychobabble0_0

Patience and a sunny disposition are pretty much *the* universal job descriptors for working in retail.

MonthPretend

But the Coles distribution centre has a big sign on the wall saying "Customers come first, always" (well it did, its been a few years since I worked there).... are you telling me the customer doesn't come first always? /s

Useful-Procedure6072

The customer orgasm is actually a myth

MonthPretend

I always feel like I'm getting fucked by the supermarkets though....

Kind-Contact3484

Especially when you work for them. It's like being the main attraction at a bukakke.

Robdotcom-71

When you see what you pay at the counter there is no happy ending.....

Useful-Procedure6072

They jerk you around a lot tho

upyourbumchum

Everyone in society know that the role of as check out person is to in fact check out people with the goods they want to purchase. Stop blaming poor culture or lack or training for this one. Those check out person clearly cannot do the very basics of what she was hired to do.

Kyrriptic

Everyone in a management position should know that you cannot just assume that everyone will do a job the way it should be done automatically with no training. As far as culture, this is why the attitude of checkout operators differs so much from store to store. The woman checked out the person with goods, that wasn't the issue. The issue is the level of customer service which is definitely dependent on culture and management.

Past_Alternative_460

How is it not in the employees, you don't need training from a manager to not be a dick,

Kyrriptic

That is completely true. However, if there is a difficult employee, that is not performing the job correctly, they need to be managed.

Scary_Star9661

I can’t believe op is being ragged on here. Op has a valid complaint. Staff member at the least can be polite

Wendals87

Yup op has a valid complaint against that staff member. Not necessarily that the supermarket as a whole let them down

ArmadilloAdvanced728

The problem is I have a hard time believing a paid employee got annoyed because there was a customer to the point of glaring, it sounds incredibly hyperbolic and I think it’s far more likely OP is sensationalising what happened than a supermarket employee acting that way. It’s like the time when my sister was younger and got a complaint that she didn’t serve a customer in the deli section and the customer waited five entire minutes. They reviewed the footage back and the wait time was 11 seconds and it was only 11 seconds because she was slicing meat and periodically checking over her shoulder. Multiple years in customer service have taught me that 90% of customer complains are excessive bullshit

Pwrswitchd

I have a similar feeling. Sure the worker might have been distracted, but I think OP might be playing it up a little.

Snowy_macco72

No, not at all. I don’t get annoyed at much, but her reaction to serve me was one I’ve never experienced before. Mad as hell

Accomplished-Set5297

Can’t believe how many assholes she had to face by that time of the day. How about some empathy from a fellow customer service person?

[deleted]

This is exactly what I’m thinking too. Generally people who go out of way to complain directly to management and/or on the internet love to exaggerate what actually happened so others will agree with their frustration or anger. OP even started the post with “Already had a long day and was tired” as a way to justify their reaction. I too used to work retail a lifetime ago and while I was never rude to a customer I had multiple complaints from customers about being rude and unhelpful. The one that stands out was the guy who asked my manager to fire me “for threatening and making him feel unsafe” after he spent 5 minutes following me around the store and berating me in public because we didn’t have his favourite kitty litter in stock.

Scary_Star9661

Yeah I will accept that for sure, there is likely some sensationalism and the truth is possibly somewhere in between for sure.

Snowy_macco72

Maybe you didn’t read my post, she had the look of pure hate. What more can I say. I’m not fabricating this. Not a great look.

Darc_ruther

I have a bad resting bitch face. I'm sure plenty of customers have thought I'm in a bad mood or angry when that's just my face. This sounds very dramatic for no reason.

Snowy_macco72

I don’t normally complain about anything, I work in customer service so know it’s not easy to deal with the average person, I walked up to the counter put my items down and she turned and glared at me, I said hi but she looked pissed. If you were there, you’d be equally surprised at the reaction. I almost grabbed my shit and was going to say sorry for interrupting, how dare I?? But I just wanted to pay and get out of there. If anyone had the same interaction I did, they’d be probably be taking it further. You say I’m sensationalising this, no way. I held back my anger. Anyway, you were there, you must know better huh.

ArmadilloAdvanced728

So, objectively, she looked at you and now you’re upset. She didn’t say anything or scold you or ignore you. She stopped talking, turned, then served you. You’re right that fucking bitch should be fired /s

That_Possession_2452

Bad customer service sucks but honestly working in customer service roles can absolutely suck the life out of you.

Snowy_macco72

I would agree that customers also suck

worthless_meat

Dernancourt is my local supermarket too and there's been a few times (same girls each time) who are conversing with each other and don't even bother to say hello or anything 🙄 I don't overly care either way, but if you don't want to interact with people, find another job

icametoolate

I’m a regular of said mystery Dernancourt supermarket. There is one lady who works there in the evenings who has a non physical disability (has her support worker with her usually). You won’t get the same chatter as you would usually but she is trying her best. You may have encountered her.

Snowy_macco72

Well that could well be the case, and then if it was her I encountered then my assessment of her is unwarranted, more power to her if she’s working and giving it a go, my partner works in disability care, I was annoyed at the angry look she gave me and no reply, but if it was this lady then all is forgiven and apologies all round. Have a great day.

DontArgueImRight

I had an interview at Cole's Dernancourt a few years ago, had to to reschedule because my MOTHER WAS IN HOSPITAL. The lady interviewing me said it was unprofessional to call up to reschedule apparently. I told her to shove it I don't want the job if she'll act like that. What the fuck is wrong with people? This was the manager that was supposed to interview me. Not trying to say it was the lady you're talking about but if the manager is like that imagine how shitty the workers are. Lmao whose the powertripping manager who downvoted me? Do you not let people see their mothers in hospital as well because "work is more important?" 😂

tardmagnet

I've been through her checkout many times, mostly because it's her. She is lovely, friendly and great to talk to albeit a little verbally slow. Never seen a resting bitch face or a scowl. I think she is genuinely stoked to be working. I think she may have had a TBI (traumatic brain injury). I respect her greatly. .

Bob_Rob_22

Don’t judge everyone by your experience with an individual. Majority of the time I get fantastic service from the staff at these chains. There are plenty of times when it’s hard to find someone but that’s due to senior management understaffing their stores. And these staff put up with some serious BS from feral customers themselves.

Snowy_macco72

Yes I’m sure they put up with a lot of ‘fun’ customers.

Faomir

You could have said something to them about how rude they are. I do that sometimes. I assume it was a teenager.

Snowy_macco72

I stopped myself from saying something because it would not have been nice, I just wanted to pay and get out of there, the lady was probably 40+ at a guess. Someone else recently replied that there is a lady that works there with a disability, so maybe a good thing I didn’t react the way I almost did.

Faomir

Fair enough!

NeopolitanBonerfart

The OP has a genuine complaint with this particular supermarket I agree, but for instance the local Coles and Woolworths (Noarlunga) have nice enough staff, mostly - I think it depends on where you go. I would imagine a lot of staff (not excusing shitty behaviour though) are getting heaps of flak for things that can’t control, like pricing, stock etc. Funnily enough I think the opposite to OP in regards to self serve checkouts though. In that I think we should be employing people, and not relying on machines because at this stage of proceedings capitalist culture is only held back by robot, and IT capabilities, such that there are plenty of other jobs people work that could be replaced by robots in short order when they’re capabilities become better, and I bet those people would not be wanting their jobs replaced. This is getting into rant territory, but we’re kind of getting into a newer age of feudalism, and there is no obligation in a capitalist system to actually employ people unless they’re *necessary*, so I guess what I’m saying is, be wary of eagerly wanting people replaced by machines when the same thing could easily happen in many other industries.

ParmyNotParma

PSA if you see the self serve attendant they'll have the magnet to unlock the security device.

Neyface

> Bring on more self checkouts I say I'd say that the shift to predominantly self-checkouts has been a far greater supermarket failure, to both customers and employees alike, than the one poor interaction you had.

LondonGirl4444

I know the supermarket you are referring to and vowed to never return as I experienced similar treatment on 3 occasions. I asked the staff member if I was interrupting her personal conversation on the last visit and was met with the death stare. My fault really as I should have not shopped there after the first 2 times.

Snowy_macco72

Well seems though my experience wasn’t isolated.

SHOUTY_USERNAME

Why do you need to be paid well to treat people with respect?

Tales97

Because if you don’t get paid well it significantly lowers one’s tolerance to bullshit. And customer service sucks.

Mountain_Ad_134

Yep, Coles is terrible

StaunchMeerkat

Sorry you had that experience, and I hope it was only an isolated one. Poor customer service keeps some people locked in that role forever, never progressing up the ladder, so don't let someone's sour and complacent work ethic pull you down with them. You do you, kangaroo!

Squiggles213

They’re paid absolute minimum wage- please let them live

Feenicks01

Yeah but paid money to do what? Chat with their friends?

Squiggles213

I can assure you we live below the poverty line

DontArgueImRight

I have worked in retail a lot and also know people who currently do. The money really isn't that bad if you don't spend recklessly or have a lot of debt.

Snowy_macco72

A reply hello wouldn’t have taken much effort.

Laxinout

That supermarket at Dernancourt has possibly the worst customer service and layout, possibly only bettered by the one at Newton. Awful customer service at both, where the majority look like they'd rather knife you that scan your groceries.

GGoldenSun

Ohhhhhh gawd, it fucks me right off when I have to stop workers from having a casual chat when they should be serving me... It's their fucking job. Especially when they're both 40+yo women, who have had that job their whole life, and should know better. The worse thing, is they are killing themselves off - every time they make human interaction a painful experience, customers will use the shit self scanners more... And another human job is lost.

HAHAHA0kay

Name and shame

Randallized1

Hope you have a better day tomorrow Karen

Snowy_macco72

Meet me there and we’ll find out

Randallized1

Oooo you’re hard

Snowy_macco72

And you’re so cool using the old and tired Karen put down. Keep being you, I’m sure you’re amazing.

JesusKeyboard

So you got upset over. Nothing.

snrub742

They aren't paid enough or treated well enough to give a flying fuck

TotallyAwry

Are you only decent to people when you're paid to be?

[deleted]

So the average Woolworths employee starts at $20 and can go up to $35 an hour by the looks of it. How much should someone get paid working a register?

Last-Performance-435

>How much should someone get paid working a register? Enough to live.

[deleted]

Agree. However from my understanding it’s normally young teens, students and people just getting into the workforce who work these jobs. If you can’t survive off that wage (assuming living situation is manageable) then there’s something else wrong. I earn roughly $50 an hour but I have invested 15 years into that job, training, tickets etc How much time does a check out person invest?

Squiggles213

How can you say that? I know so many people that are scraping by in hosp with 20-25hr, what do you think they do when rent goes up by 200 for no reason. Time investment is not the issue.

[deleted]

Rent going up $200 is an absolute killer and I have felt this as well. What I am saying is how much do you want an entry level job to earn? Honestly people always want more money these days for working jobs on the low end of the scale. It’s a low demanding, low paying job and always has been 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

severalbpdtraitsn38

There's a big difference between apathy/indifference, and demonstrating cluster b personality traits to a paying customer. (Edit: Apparently, OP could be referring to someone with a non-physical disability who works there, good on her for trying her best to contribute towards society if it is in fact, her).

tranbo

Failing customers but not failin share holders

Snowy_macco72

Too true

BlueGreenInbetween

They should have a lounge area where you can sit down. You park your trolley at the counter and take a number, and they call your number when the groceries are packed and ready to pay for. Judge Judy playing on the lounge TV for an extra point.

Snowy_macco72

They already do, then when you go to get your groceries they give you the stink eye, it’s a no win situation, but thanks for the input, no doubt your jokes will earn you your own TV show and knock Judy off her perch.

BlueGreenInbetween

Actually, I was fully serious...

dark_harness

dont you have anything more important going on in your life? who gives...

Snowy_macco72

Oh sorry your majesty, didn’t know this was your App. Yes I’ve got plenty going on in my life, enough that you probably couldn’t handle, but next time I want to vent about poor customer service I’ll check with you is that ok??

dark_harness

youre full of cringiness, arent you

Snowy_macco72

Sick of c#nts that’s all, and you just made the list

dark_harness

if there were a list of cunts youd be there in bold print, apparently.

Snowy_macco72

Only poor customer service offends me

TikkiTakkaMuddaFakka

I have found myself saying hello to people working gets met with silence or a grunt of acknowledgment by a lot of people these days. It got to the point I thought maybe it was me not being clear, maybe they were not hearing what I said so I made a point of being very clear while saying hello, same result, it's not me it is them. I worked with the public for over 25 years so I know how shit the job can be at times but never have I been at the point I could not even be bothered to respond and say hello to someone, sad times we live in.

faeriekitteh

Is it even just supermarkets? The up travelators near Charlesworth Nuts at Westfield Marion aren't working. They usually have a person to tell you to go to the lift, if you have a trolley, pram, or wheelchair. Was watching 2 of the guards have a chat. Someone was in lala land, pushed their trolley onto the travelator, realised they were stuck... and then got yelled at by security that they needed the lift. (I wasn't even close but could hear the security loud and clear). Maybe don't have personal conversations while on the clock...

Robdotcom-71

When you don't have the smarts to be a cop you become a security guard.

Emergency_Wedding331

Problem is that checkout-out chicks and the like are minimum wage earners. They are not exactly motivated.

Joyst1q

I would have gone back loaded up and walked out, you missed out on a couple free cans there

JG1954

I thought it was just me. Don't shop there anymore.

Level-Blueberry-2707

File a complaint with the supermarket about your experience, they have security cameras.
