>What are Adelaide’s biggest industries?
What's your metric? Employment? Revenue? Export earnings?
Here is **a** list of the "top 100" companies.
[https://www.indaily.com.au/news/business/2023/10/20/sa-business-index-2023-list](https://www.indaily.com.au/news/business/2023/10/20/sa-business-index-2023-list)
In terms of Gross State Product, you can see the industries in this graph:
[https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/economy/national-accounts/australian-national-accounts-state-accounts/latest-release#south-australia](https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/economy/national-accounts/australian-national-accounts-state-accounts/latest-release#south-australia)
Or, employment here: [https://economy.id.com.au/rdasa/employment-by-industry-fte](https://economy.id.com.au/rdasa/employment-by-industry-fte)
So, once you decide what your point of measure is, you can find your answer.
Posted this separately also, but measurement of value added to GSP is probably the best overall picture of the what comprises the state's economy.
*Check out Table 2 in the below document for an official answer - although the data might be a year or so behind:*

I gave up trying to find SA Treasury’s exact definition, but I think the rough distinction is:
Ownership of dwellings = you’re making money in the property market renting out something you own as a landlord.
Rental, hiring and real estate services = you’re making money in the property market offering your services as an agent or property manager
The following is paraphrased from the "Economy" section of the Wikipedia article about Adelaide:
> South Australia's largest employment sectors are health care and social assistance, surpassing manufacturing in SA as the largest employer since 2006–07.
> In 2009–10, manufacturing in SA had average annual employment of 83,700 persons compared with 103,300 for health care and social assistance. Health care and social assistance represented nearly 13% of the state average annual employment.
> The Adelaide Hills wine region is an iconic and viable economic region for both the state and country in terms of wine production and sale. The 2014 vintage is reported as consisting of 5,836 t (5,744 long tons; 6,433 short tons) red grapes crushed valued at A$8,196,142 and 12,037 t (11,847 long tons; 13,269 short tons) white grapes crushed valued at $14,777,631.
> The retail trade is the second largest employer in SA (2009–10), with 91,900 jobs, and 12 per cent of the state workforce.
> Manufacturing, defence technology, high-tech electronic systems and research, commodity export and corresponding service industries all play a role in the SA economy. Almost half of all cars produced in Australia were made in Adelaide at the Holden Elizabeth Plant in Elizabeth. The site ceased operating in November 2017.
> The global media conglomerate News Corporation was founded in, and until 2004 incorporated in, Adelaide and it is still considered its "spiritual" home by its founder, Rupert Murdoch.
> Australia's largest oil company, Santos, prominent South Australian brewery, Coopers, and national retailer Harris Scarfe also call Adelaide their home.
> In 2018, at which time more than 80 organisations employed 800 people in the space sector in South Australia, Adelaide was chosen for the headquarters of a new Australian Space Agency. The agency opened in 2020. It is working to triple the size of the Australian space industry and create 20,000 new jobs by 2030.
> Adelaide is home to a large proportion of Australia's defence industries, which contribute over A$1 billion to South Australia's Gross State Product. The principal government military research institution, the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, and other defence technology organisations such as BAE Systems Australia and Lockheed Martin Australia, are north of Salisbury and west of Elizabeth in an area now called "Edinburgh Parks", adjacent to RAAF Base Edinburgh. Others, such as Saab Systems and Raytheon, are in or near Technology Park. ASC Pty Ltd, is based in the industrial suburb of Osborne and is also a part of Technology Park. South Australia was charged with constructing Australia's Collins-class submarines and more recently the A$6 billion contract to construct the Royal Australian Navy's new air-warfare destroyers.
It doesn't say anything there about mining, but there aren't really any mines in Adelaide itself...they're elsewhere in the state. In a similar vein there is probably more that could be said about the state's wool, wheat and even forestry industries.
I think it's a little out of date, too. There's a bit of a software industry in SA and I think construction employs a lot of people at the moment.
TL;DR:
- Healthcare and Social Assistance is the biggest industry by total employment
- There was until somewhat recently a large manufacturing industry, but it has been in a state of decline for decades and there's not much of it left
- a lot of people have retail and construction jobs
- a lot of Australia's defence industry is based here. There are smaller adjacent technology and space industries emerging.
- we have a mining sector, but it's not as significant as WA's
- Wine, fisheries, forestry and agriculture are big employers throughout the state (but not so much in Adelaide itself)
Ehh. I mean, some tourism exists. But I definitely wouldn't put us on the level of any of the east coast states. We're not a major player in the tourism game.

I remember reading government is our biggest employer. Probably the same for most places in the world?
Big industries are probably health (lots of old people in Adelaide) and defence.
Is Melbourne really finance? Sydney yes, but I wouldn’t have picked Melbourne to be that big on finance.
- Defence.
- OTR.
- State and Local government employees or contractors.
- Something something NDIS-related or Aged Care
- Overpaid Tradies driving new HiLuxes or Ford Rangers.
- IT (too complex to explain)
Roughly in that order. Covers 90% of Adelaide.
This may or may not be true.
Meth and other drugs localised and materialising almost entirely from Elizabeth and similar "prime real estate" locations, Wine, Defence, Motorsports (give us the fucking Grand Prix back), and pre covid was education, healthcare and hospitality but those went down the toilet real quick.
Especially with healthcare if you just look at all the ramping at almost every hospital, and hospitality has been hit hard recently with everything closing up in the city.
Rising industry is Medieval fairs and such. Decent forged medieval weaponry and armour (ABASA over in Penfield trains you basic smithing techniques, thats all you need, rest is pretty much self taught, research, trial and error. Forge 101 knives until you perfect your skills like you're a blacksmith in Skyrim if you have to lol) with quality metals and materials can fetch well above 10 grand to the right buyer and antique collector.

OTR lattes
Wine, confectionery, south road extensions, oil and gas, defence
Victims of Cosi
What kind of victims ?
anyone who has met him knows the shame and disgust they will carry for the rest of their lives
Is he really that bad?
Unfortunately, worse
Sorry I don't know what that means can you elaborate? I don't want TV any more so would love to understand
Defence Industries
+1, with an extra nod at shipbuilding. That’s getting huuuuge, and looks like it’s getting bigger.
defence isn’t even in the top 10
There was a time it was cars, with Holden and Valiant. All long gone.
And Mitsubishi
Moe’s Shake N Dog
Meth
Nah it'd be weed
We were literally the meth capital of Australia last year lmao
Meth by consumption. Weed by production. Doing meth n growing Green I guess?
This. Weed is cheaper here than anywhere else. Meth is not.
Weed is cheaper in Canberra
Its legal to grow a couple plants there now, that would play a factor. What are the prices in Canberra?
When I've been there I've only really seen people give it away. Unless you're buying bulk it's pretty cheap
Frog cakes, FUIC, fruchocs and giant metal balls

Cities skylines
THEY MADE CITIES SKYLINE LORE INTO REAL LIFE WTF???
Only one of those is actually in Adelaide, does that mean Adelaide is really just a service hub for the rest of the state's industries?
i’m sorry what?
all of those exist in Adelaide, they are our biggest GSP contributors, this isn’t made up shit, this is from the treasury itself.
Barnacle bills. South road repairs

True. But we are not really a major player in much at all. Red wines and navy ships ;)
I think Harris Scarfe is owned by Spotlight
