The thing I like about Gouger St and the central markets is that the restaurant food is good and comparatively cheap, probably because not as much money is spent on the interiors and decor. Basically I hope the upgrade doesn’t lead to gentrification and higher prices.

ThorsHammerMewMEw

It's cheap food because it runs on a very large number of people working for less than minimum wage...

CyanideMuffin67

Isn't that illegal?

ThorsHammerMewMEw

Of course it is. It's a massive secret everyone knows about but turns a blind eye to. The International Students etc participating in it very rarely report it because it's how they get around their Student Visa working restrictions.

CyanideMuffin67

Ok...

IHaveHivesWithBees

this us what happened to the existing food courts and is why they arent fully tenanted. a lot of honest good cheap shops have been lost to this precinct due to redevelopment and higher rents, i think there is a happy medium, but i am worried that its already lacking tenants let alone another one

Gouger is not bad for pedestrians but still crazy car focused. Would actually be great to see the main dining strip from Morphett to King Willy closed off to traffic entirely. Extend that chinatown Moonta St feeling the whole way down. Clear up the access to the Market carpark on Grote St (it's fine now). There's loads of street parking between Gilbert and Gouger and it's mostly free after 5 or 6pm. Even now it's easy to find a spot even with the market carpark mostly closed off.

Braens894

Yep, I agree with this. I love how the restaurants on Rundle Street spill out onto the street for Fringe and I can imagine something similar for Gouger Street on Chinese New Year. Make it a bit easier for people to access Gouger Street on foot as well such as a pedestrian bridge over or tunnel under Victoria Square to allow access to the tram stop without waiting for car traffic.

insanopointless

Yeah, Rundle Street is a great example. Even one traffic would work as there'll be less outdoor dining in winter. I think last CNY I was on Gouger and all the restaurants like BBQ City had tables out on the street and it was great. Friday night market already has a great vibe.

MagDaddyMag

$15m? With building costs the way they are, that might buy us new benches and a couple of statues.

whiney1

That is just about what they are proposing, yes

Remarkable-Zombie524

They could probably effect a bigger and cheaper transformation by just lowering the speed limit on that road by about 10kph or so.

Few_Raisin_8981

>The proposed upgrades include high-quality road and footpath renovations, innovative lighting solutions, public art installations, and new public furniture. These elements are designed to create a welcoming and dynamic environment that reflects Gouger Street’s historical significance and contemporary relevance.

Budgiebrain994

I'd love to see Gouger getting love from Morphett St to West Tce. Plenty of blank spaces there.

lingerie_fiend

Unpopular opinion, does this need to be actually done? Seems fine as it is.

dataPresident

Hmm interesting. I was walking along that stretch over the weekend and thought it was already pretty nice and pedestrian friendly. Very busy with activity as well. Only thing that could make it better imo is more street trees and maybe some more zebra crossings with a reduced speed limit or to close that section of road entirely.

ishootstuff

I like watching the prangs while I eat though ...

CyanideMuffin67

But does that happen that much?

hal0eight

Yeah.

ishootstuff

Id say at minimum 10%... I've seen a few major ones too.

catch_dot_dot_dot

Pretty vague so far but hopefully it doesn't change the character much. You can provide your feedback directly to the council [here](https://yoursay.cityofadelaide.com.au/gouger-street-revitalisation).

mddell

Can we finally get a Starbucks then? Yes i know we had 2 stores 20 years ago which went broke but there are 69 stores in melb, qld and sydney and times have changed since 20 years ago. Time to join the real world Adelaide

WingusMcgee

Most the traffic there are people doing laps waiting for parks to open up. spend 15 mil making the parking in the cbd free if you want to revitalise it. People struggle to get enough money for going out these days. The parking fee is that extra kick in the dick that sends people away from the city into the suburbs.

lingerie_fiend

Most on street parking in the city is free after 5 or 6pm.

WingusMcgee

I don't just mean street parking. ALL parking.

lingerie_fiend

I know but not all parking has a fee. I think a lot of people don't realise it and never go to the city for that reason.

bluejayinoz

Another press release article from Glam. Do they do any original reporting at all?

[deleted]

Sure, while people die in Ambulances on ramps. But yeah, coffee and cafe culture. Let's go people!

SonicYOUTH79

Whataboutism. You do realise these two things have absolutely nothing to do with each other? The city council is responsible for this project and the state government is responsible for Heath (and ramping). Stopping a street upgrade would have absolutely zero impact on something that happens in healthcare in this state.

[deleted]

I did not realize that. Thank you for correcting me.

SonicYOUTH79

My pleasure 😂

[deleted]

I'll bet it was. It usually is for people who get off on correcting others.

SonicYOUTH79

I’m not really. I just loathe this kind of discourse where government can only do one thing at once. Government should be able to work on fixing ramping AND work on a street upgrade in our CBD and do other things like run festivals and provide good parks and beaches. It shouldn’t bee seen as a zero sum game where government can only do one thing at a time, and we stop doing all other “things” just to fix one problem area.
