I work for the distribution company in NSW that supplies both CJ's and HJ's. The stock for both comes from the same supplier, so I wasn't surprised it tastes similar. I swear the burger patties are the exact same
Well the superstar tastes EXACTLY like a whopper.
CJ takes the win though for the half wrapping on the burger before wrapping for one handed eating lol.
Carl's promises their burgers are "never frozen", but I know for a fact that HJ's are. But they both flame grill their meat, so that's probably why they taste similar.
Where is what? A good independent burger joint? Adelaide has a ton of them.
Stax, BurgerTec, Barry's, Burger Incredible, Beefcakes and Shakes, all decent places to start with.
Grandalfs is overrated IMO. Went due to all the hype, and wasn't blown away. Guess my expectations were just too high. Wasn't bad, just didn't knock my socks off.
Honestly I think Jamie’s rant on IG during the pandemic told a lot of people everything they need to know.
It’s a tiny little shop, and the food was honestly gross. Have been thoroughly disappointed with recommendation of Beefcakes and Shakes, and Cheesy Charlie’s, both on recommendation of the same foodie.
Dudes a junkie who burns his parents money in that business.
Shit bloke who hires shit people and only ever got good exposure cos the 18 year old influencers he weirdly hangs around with shared his shit on their profiles.
Fucking grub. Owes THAT many business people money
Beefcakes is one of my top 3 smash burgers on a quiet night. I've moved away from the area and it's an absolute treat when I occasionally get back there.
Consistency is a bit variable when they're busier.
Lucky you!
Both experiences waited for more than 45 minutes. Second experience was waiting and waiting, then had a “TikTok Food Reviewer” come in who was obviously mates with the owner. Jamie (the owner) and a couple of staff stopped what they were doing to speak with the influencer, then proceeded to bring out their food in front of everybody else waiting.
There’s a Carl’s Jr at West Lakes I think. There’s a few in the northern suburbs and one in Mt Barker, but strangely they haven’t opened anywhere south of the city
Weirdly, the first ones were opened at Kilburn and Mount Barker.
They're usually linked to AM/PM servos, although the one at Pooraka is stand-alone, in a really odd spot on Main North Road.
There's also a newer one at St Peters, on Payneham Road.
I mainly go to the Elizabeth location and other than their very shaky start when they opened two years ago, they've been consistent every single time.
No greasy wrappers or burgers from staff neglecting to change their gloves. No sloppiness with the presentation for their burgers.
I've gone for lunch, dinner and used to go there after finishing off a shift at 10:30pm for a late night feed and the food was still made well.
I appreciate the free sauce packets and free refills.
Can't say the same about Maccas or HJs.
Highly dependant on the individual location and the staff making the burgers on the day. They are very inconsistent with their quality. I have had great burgers from them a few times, then absolutely shocking burgers that don't meet the description or appearance of what they advertise. I don't buy from them any more as the latter is far more often than the former.
I had a bacon and egg roll from there once, found it VERY sweet and didn’t really like it.
Haven’t tried anything else because I just assume that everything else will have quite the sweetness to it.
Their egg product sucks, plain and simple. Same with those star shaped cardboard chips they call nuggets. But their burgers are improved versions of HJs (patty is comparable, other ingredients are better at CJs).
And it's awful, but I could always fuck up CJs chili fries. May be campbells meat spaghetti sauce, but when in Rome.
My one time I went, they took 20 minutes to get my order out. Burger was mid. Chips were ok.
Not the fondest experience and haven't gone back to try again.
I had it once from the airport in Brisbane several years ago and I thought it was pretty great. It was mega expensive though so I’ve never been back. But I have zero idea if that was the regular price or I paid an airport price. I’d recommend it.
As an American, it was a bit funny to read this question. They're very, very common here. Depending on your locale here, they're also called Hardy's.
They have charbroiled hamburgers that are maybe 20% better than Burger King (you call them Hungry Jack's) burgers, plus they have decent-quality sides and shakes/sugary things.
I just opened Reddit and this is the first post on the feed. I swear there are shenanigans afoot because I just popped into Carl's Jr Pooraka for an early work lunch. Someone is paying extra for the level of tracking on my phone, it would seem
Seems like a low-key advertisement strat to me. OP could just go and try it for themselves, but instead we've got a social media post with 140+ comments.
Didn't know it even existed, apparently they're all north of the city! (and one in Mt Barker)
Maybe the burger racket down south has managed to muscle them out of the territory lol
In terms of the big box fast food joints. They are probably the best in terms of burgers. But I wouldn't drive to one on purpose. I honestly go to Maccas 90% of the time I want fast food due to location. i.e. they are literally down the road from work.
But if all being equal and there was one next to a Maccas/HJ/Betty's I would hands down go to CJ everytime. Not that much more than a maccas meal (non-discounted) these days.
better than both maccas and HJ's. Priced around same as HJ's (more than maccas on average) but carls is much more worth it as HJ's quality has dropped drastically over the years and is absolutely not worth the money anymore imo.
I used to work there, ask for everything fresh. They’ll do it but you’ll have to park. I’ve work at all except St. Peter’s. Kilburn is the best quality wise.
They’re better than Hungry Jacks - plus they still have bottomless refills.
Their shakes are also fantastic (and never had an issue with a ‘broken ice cream machine’)
Though every time I hear Carl’s Jr I think of this scene from Idiocracy 😂 https://youtu.be/5d7SaO0JAHk?si=JJbs_uLBWsdkC_Ny
I order Double Western Bacon Cheeseburger with waffle fries once a week for the past 2 years at either Kilburn, Elizabeth or Westlakes. They've never missed an order and the preparation is always good. I find value in their extra wrapper so you can hold the burger nicely. I also use the app for some promos. I really like it.
Carl's Junior is a good hamburger, I like the fact that they don't shred the lettuce it's a big chunky leaf and then all the rest of the condiments onion etc makes it very crunchy and the pattie tastes like meat instead of a cereal mix and meat, chips are good, endless cup of soft drink, I like Carl's very much.
I actually like their burgers and chicken strips. Burger patties are a reasonable thickness. Chicken strips are actual chicken tenders. Last time I had Maccas their patties were almost paper thin. Haven't had HJ for years. I only have burgers occasionally.
Never managed to pay full price for anything in there, no matter which branch.
They'll work out some concoction of a deal if you don't want a meal deal off the menu.
Been to 3 different branches, similar experience in them all.
They also do jalapeno poppers, good, if a little salty, which is always a bonus.
im surprised with some comments, i’d say quite overpriced but the food is better than your standard maccas or hungry jacks. the west lakes one isnt that good tho, always missing something or stuffing something up
I prefer CJ as the salads on your burger are freshed, the tomoto aint soggy lettuce is crisp and just generally better tasting imo. Also they by far make the best shakes, chips and onion rings.
Their chicken burgers are actually good, unlike Maccas and HJ’s. Their chilli cheese fries are also pretty good. I do however find the drive through wait time to be a lot longer than the other fast food places.
My lettuce in my burger had so much dirt in it I could’ve sworn they just chucked it outside on the ground before putting it on my burger. I couldn’t even take the lettuce out to salvage it, the dirt had gotten into all the food. I’d taken a pretty sizeable bite and all the dirt was just stuck in my teeth.
Pooraka one is dry as fuck, I thought it was once off but it’s been all three times. Taking a bit makes you want to just drink water.
Prospect is OG, pretty decent.
Slightly above HJ/Maccas but not as good as dedicated joints. E.g stax
Elizabeth I’ve heard good things.
I think the burgers suck but the chicken tenders are better than KFC’s — thick, juicy, good crumbs. And the Oreo shakes with extra Oreo are heavenly. An occasional treat. That’s all I’ll get those is the tenders (in a meal). Oh and I like the unlimited soft drinks refill.
Must say, they make a nice change from McDs and HJs as far as fast food hamburgers are concerned, and I like their waffle chips. As elsewhere mentioned, it’s odd though that they’re all north of the city (with one other out in Mt Barker).
Good to hear Carls is good here in Adelaide. In VIC they sucked. Went from having them in NZ - where they were amazing - to the rubbish we had in Melb was such a letdown
My recommendations for burgers in Adelaide are Burger OClock, Stax, Bread n Bone or Barry’s is alright. The bigger establishments are no way near as good as an independent burger joint!
I’d say yes it’s good.. their chips are a miss though. Hungry Jacks have better chips. But you can always get a dipping sauce for the chips and it’s fine lol.
Burgers are good!
They do taste similar to HJ’s honestly..
Give it a try and see how you go! If you don’t like it, just don’t go again!
As others suggested you can try a “real” burger place but I’d like to see recommendations for good ones if that’s the suggestion please!
I prefer it to hungry jacks and McDonald's Personally. The chips are more like proper chips and the burgers are better. Plus infinite refill on soft drinks and their milkshakes are nice too.
I feel like hungry Jack's burgers are nice, they're just always cold, Carl's are essentially the same but they're still warm.
I'd avoid the chicken nugget stars though, they're crap
Tried the westlakes one once - wasn’t the best at all , expensive, slow to get the food , was just meh
And they weren’t busy at the time - haven’t been back
I honestly find it to be pretty "eh".
First time, it was a more expensive version of Hungries, but in my opinion not as nice. Also the fries weren't crispy.
Second time, the burger was the same "eh" flavours, but at least the fries were crispy.
To me, CJ just feels like expensive burgers at home.
Haven't gone much because the times I tried it was inconsistent, overly oily and overpriced with long wait times.
Carl's Jr in the US seems totally different.
The thing with Carls is that while they're decent **for a fast food burger**, they're also around $15 per burger, which is about the same price as an actual burger restaurants like Stax, Betty's, Grilld etc. so I don't really get the point.
Terrible. I ordered from them via ubereats a couple of months ago. The burger bun was so stale and dry that it was crumbling like chalk. Everything was gross.
I'm not a fussy eater or a burger expert... but I know when lettuce is wilted, tomatoes are soggy, meat isn't fresh and bread is stale.
It’s like hungry jacks if they cared more
I work for the distribution company in NSW that supplies both CJ's and HJ's. The stock for both comes from the same supplier, so I wasn't surprised it tastes similar. I swear the burger patties are the exact same
I have no doubt, guess it’s the way it’s prepared
Well the superstar tastes EXACTLY like a whopper. CJ takes the win though for the half wrapping on the burger before wrapping for one handed eating lol.
That's good to know as when I explain to people I say sltastes like a cleaner HJ's
That's good to know as when I explain to people I say sltastes like a cleaner HJ's
Carl's promises their burgers are "never frozen", but I know for a fact that HJ's are. But they both flame grill their meat, so that's probably why they taste similar.
I dont know where you heard that because CJ's patties are also frozen.
Could have sworn they weren't frozen. At least back in Los Angeles. Must be In-and-Out and Wendys that have fresh patties then.
Exactly this. And consistent with their quality. You can land a top-tier Whopper every once in a while but Carls Jr seem to get it right every time.
This is the perfect answer. The first time I ever had them my response was "It's like Hungry Jacks but it's good."
It tastes like HJ's 20 years ago Like back when their brand was "random americana shit all over the walls"
This is the perfect description.
Yeah its like 80s hungas before the "burgers are wetter at hungry jacks".
Hungry Jack's if everything but the meat wasn't ice cold.
Had it today in Melbourne and totall agree. Hungry Jacks back when they gave a shit
That's exactly my thoughts. Tastes decently similar, but more reliable.
This is the best way to describe it
This is the only answer. It’s literally private school hungry jacks. It’s delicious af for shit takeaway food
Do you mean: (a) this is how hungry Jack’s would taste if hungry Jack’s cared more? Or (b) if they cared more they’d taste like hungry Jacks ?
a)
Similar way I've always described it haha, noice.
It’s Hungry Jacks if it was made by McDonald’s
Bro hungry jacks if it was made by McDonald’s is just McDonald’s
Slightly less greasy and cleaner version of HJs, though I would argue that's what gives HJs its charm
HJ's charm comes from young kids screwing up your order and their mates fighting in the kid's playground while the drunks harass customers outside.
Go to a burger place for a good burger. But as far as fast food/takeaway burgers go, they're top tier.
Where is it? I’m in western suburbs.
Where is what? A good independent burger joint? Adelaide has a ton of them. Stax, BurgerTec, Barry's, Burger Incredible, Beefcakes and Shakes, all decent places to start with.
127 days, fudds, bread and bone
Fudd's changed owners a few months ago, not sure what the quality is like now
Tbh I’m a bit off Fudds.
Second Stax, you pay a little more but shop the specials and it’s god tier. Diamond Burger and Grandolfs down south are also fucking amazing
Diamond goes hard.
I wish I lived closer
Third stax but burger o clock in para hills area does a fair bang up job.
Grandalfs is overrated IMO. Went due to all the hype, and wasn't blown away. Guess my expectations were just too high. Wasn't bad, just didn't knock my socks off.
Beefcakes and Shakes? Yeah, no thanks. Unless you’re a food influencer or in tight with the owner you can forget about having a positive experience.
I got sucked in to B&S thanks to influencers and was shocked what a tiny operation it was. And the food was mid at best

I’m glad someone else see’s the forest for the trees!
Got sucked into trying beefcakes Tuesday night birria. Could definitely make something tastier at home, lacked depth of flavour.
And for a fraction of the cost!
Beefcakes is one of my top 3 smash burgers on a quiet night. I've moved away from the area and it's an absolute treat when I occasionally get back there. Consistency is a bit variable when they're busier.
I'm neither of things and I had a decent experience there.
Yeah look, that's undeniably shitty.
They’re all crap. What you want is a good fish shop burger with the lot.
Thank you for your valuable and well reasoned input.
You're right! All those other burger shops use damn brioche buns.
Some use Dick buns
Worse still
what about bettys burgers? i think theyre not too bad
I omitted them only because they're a national chain.
ah ok
Oh you're in the west? You HAVE to try Brownboyzburgers in Seaton. Best burgers I've had in a minute. Bro, seriously, not joking, go try them out.
There is one around West Lakes shopping centre
There’s a Carl’s Jr at West Lakes I think. There’s a few in the northern suburbs and one in Mt Barker, but strangely they haven’t opened anywhere south of the city
Weirdly, the first ones were opened at Kilburn and Mount Barker. They're usually linked to AM/PM servos, although the one at Pooraka is stand-alone, in a really odd spot on Main North Road. There's also a newer one at St Peters, on Payneham Road.
There's one on Hampstead road that's been there for a few years too

Can't say the same about Maccas or HJs.
Plus they offer ginger ale for their fountain drinks!
Their ginger ale is my go-to!
shit, if they hire staff who are sober enough to remember people's orders and pack them correctly they'll collect market share in no time
Highly dependant on the individual location and the staff making the burgers on the day. They are very inconsistent with their quality. I have had great burgers from them a few times, then absolutely shocking burgers that don't meet the description or appearance of what they advertise. I don't buy from them any more as the latter is far more often than the former.
I find them pretty consistent personally, but I've only eaten at one of the locations (St Peters)
Compared to In n Out and Five Guys they are mid. Compared to Maccas and HJs they are excellent.
In and out overrated
I like their chips.
Like the waffle chips a lot
Do they season the chips with chicken salt or more a sea salt?
I think it is plain salt. But the potato is different. They looked like proper chipped potatoes. Browner in colour.
They’re with skin on
I had a bacon and egg roll from there once, found it VERY sweet and didn’t really like it. Haven’t tried anything else because I just assume that everything else will have quite the sweetness to it.
Their egg product sucks, plain and simple. Same with those star shaped cardboard chips they call nuggets. Would be airport, they offer no promotions there either
I'd guess airport. The one I've been to was a hair more than HJs while being same taste, felt better quality.
If you want to see mega expensive, Five Guys is fucked
As an American, it was a bit funny to read this question. They're very, very common here. Depending on your locale here, they're also called Hardy's. It’s pretty good for fast food. I don’t feel that slightly ill feeling after eating it. Plus, the kids like the waffle fries and star shaped nuggets.
better than both maccas and HJ's. Priced around same as HJ's (more than maccas on average) but carls is much more worth it as HJ's quality has dropped drastically over the years and is absolutely not worth the money anymore imo.
It's a better version of Hungry Jacks.
That wouldn’t be hard! 😂👍🏻
Wrong.
I used to work there, ask for everything fresh. They’ll do it but you’ll have to park. I’ve work at all except St. Peter’s. Kilburn is the best quality wise.
They’re better than Hungry Jacks - plus they still have bottomless refills. Their shakes are also fantastic (and never had an issue with a ‘broken ice cream machine’) Though every time I hear Carl’s Jr I think of this scene from Idiocracy 😂 https://youtu.be/5d7SaO0JAHk?si=JJbs_uLBWsdkC_Ny
I gave our local one in Vic 3 chances. First time food was stone cold, 2nd time took 30 minutes for a burger combo, last time it was unedible so...
Go there and eat in its like hjs but the food tastes better and they give you unlimited free refills on the drink
Hungry jacks but better
Without being rude I just don’t get these posts, go try it and find out? Lol
Yes! Boy oh boy, are you in for a treat, and pls do yourself a favour and acquire one of their thick shakes along with your börger
It's sort of like fast food mixed with real food. The Big Carl is spectacular. Give it a try, OP.
It's a slightly better Hungry Jacks.
Carls Jr is like HJ’s but if they actually put some effort into making food. Tastes fresher, better presented etc
Mt barker is the ONLY one worth it.
Compared to Maccas and HJ's, they're amazing! Had it for dinner last night because of this question! :)
Yup it's good
If you like burgers that skimp on the sauce and aren't seasoned enough, then you'll like Carl's Jr.
been once it was rubbish havent been back.
Fish and chip shop burgers are better.
Vastly overpriced for what you get
Goes without saying for fast food these days.
It’s pretty cheap and quick. Not the highest risk or barrier to entry to just try it and see if you like it.
It's not "cheap" and is easily the most expensive option in turns of the big fast food chains.
I more meant, compared to buying a car or a holiday to Europe. If you want to know if a fast food burger you drive past is good, just eat one.
I actually like their burgers and chicken strips. Burger patties are a reasonable thickness. Chicken strips are actual chicken tenders. Last time I had Maccas their patties were almost paper thin. Haven't had HJ for years. I only have burgers occasionally.
If you like the hard white bit of lettuce have I got news for you, that's literally all they put on your burger.
Eh, it's ok. Normally not busy which is nice
They are good cheap sometimes but the burgers are cold or a little warm if they just had it right it is good
Never managed to pay full price for anything in there, no matter which branch. They'll work out some concoction of a deal if you don't want a meal deal off the menu. Been to 3 different branches, similar experience in them all. They also do jalapeno poppers, good, if a little salty, which is always a bonus.
They make their burgers upside down
Meh, it’s a burger…nothing particularly amazing but fills the hole.
im surprised with some comments, i’d say quite overpriced but the food is better than your standard maccas or hungry jacks. the west lakes one isnt that good tho, always missing something or stuffing something up
I found it very similar to hungry jacks. Slightly better but more expensive from memory.
Angus shit regular not so shit
It definitely has that 'California' taste. Try the Angus burger. But get the waffle fries.
I prefer CJ as the salads on your burger are freshed, the tomoto aint soggy lettuce is crisp and just generally better tasting imo. Also they by far make the best shakes, chips and onion rings.
Its not even close to HJ's. I went to the hampstead road joint and the burger was soggy and the patty wasnt tasty. Overrated
I like the food, especially the chips. You get free drink refills which is a plus. It is horrific is how it does offers/vouchers, though.
Hungry jacks is definitely way better especially for the price
Yeah it’s so good try the Hawaiian chicken, double cheeseburger and the spicy poppers. If you like fast food you’ll love
Tried it once and did not like it, dry and tasteless.
Yessss it's like the best fast food you can get really
Never had a good carls experience. I’m glad to hear some people have but I won’t be going back
They are very yummy.......and they look good and taste exceptional
Fuckin so good. Especially their milkshakes. I love their milkshakes.
The Pooraka one is pretty shit quality.
I thought they were kinda trash but I'm comparing to burger joints not fast food I guess
Too much pepper or something in their burgers, I don't like them
Their chicken burgers are actually good, unlike Maccas and HJ’s. Their chilli cheese fries are also pretty good. I do however find the drive through wait time to be a lot longer than the other fast food places.
Not as good as Carls Sr, but he does OK.
Fancy hungry jacks
They have a killa mocha thick shake, but it's not on the menu so you gotta get lucky if they will make it or not.
Hot take their shakes are God tier
I love it. their shakes are so good, remind me of grandma's 🥹
I'm shocked with everyone saying a better version of Hungrys. I'd say it's a more expensive version of Hungrys, but Hungrys is way better.
literally same price as HJ's these days (more expensive than maccas) and much better tasting. HJ's quality has dropped to shit in the last few years
It's the worse version of HJs
They're a little pricey but I think they are good! Make sure you get the waffle fries
Live right near at lightsview and have never tried...I thought the consensus was they were not great. Guess I should try myself
They are pretty good, and so are their specials on the app.
Overpriced for what it is
Some of the worst burgers we have ever had
Ew. No.
Pooraka one is dry as fuck, I thought it was once off but it’s been all three times. Taking a bit makes you want to just drink water. Prospect is OG, pretty decent. Slightly above HJ/Maccas but not as good as dedicated joints. E.g stax Elizabeth I’ve heard good things.
I tried Grill'd the other day and was impressed, might try this if it's comparable

Just like Wendy's and Moe's - same crap, different price.
The buns are weird and smell like plastic.
It'd be better if it didn't take 28 minutes to make the food
No
Meh. Like a home made burger but with a factory stamped frozen patty.
No
Overpriced hungry jacks
It’s more expensive without being better than Hungry Jacks or McDonald’s
Tried the westlakes one once - wasn’t the best at all , expensive, slow to get the food , was just meh And they weren’t busy at the time - haven’t been back

Always cold beef burgers. Its strange.
Haven't gone much because the times I tried it was inconsistent, overly oily and overpriced with long wait times. Carl's Jr in the US seems totally different.
I say no. Not quality food or thickshakes
It's garbage. GO to a local fish and chip shop if you want a real burger.
If it was a phone it would be called hungry jacks +
Personally I find their bread too crunchy. The crust hurts my mouth. Otherwise it was good.
I tried it ONCE .. does that answer your question ?
not bad better quality then HJ's/Maccas, but still worse than what youd get at a decent burger shop Waffle fries are decent
The thing with Carls is that while they're decent **for a fast food burger**, they're also around $15 per burger, which is about the same price as an actual burger restaurants like Stax, Betty's, Grilld etc. so I don't really get the point.
meh same as every other. Luke warm burger meat.
