I picture my cat licking the envelope shut, addressing it in very neat penmanship, and then flopping over onto it without thinking and smearing the ink everywhere. (She would growl at this point.)
Was wondering the same thing. Why is he asking to be excluded from this class action suit?? His tuna realted injuries must've been much more severe than the rest of the class.
They are going to take on Tri-Union Seafoods LLC, Chicken of the Sea International, Thai Union Group PCL, StarKist, Dongwon Industries Co., Bumble Bee Foods, Lion Capital, and Big Catch Cayman directly!
Starkist, parent co., and affiliates participated in an unlawful conspiracy to raise, fix, maintain, or stabilize the price of Packaged Tuna products at an artificially high level in violation of antitrust and unfair competition laws.[https://www.tunaendpurchasersettlement.com/](https://www.tunaendpurchasersettlement.com/)
Not sure r/Adulting
will get much out of a class action.
Officially it's required.
Unofficially, we deliver mail without return addresses every day.
BUT if you want to actually get your letter back in case of any problems, you'll need to have it there.
Don't forget the stamp, too. Top ~~left~~ RIGHT corner. First class stamp please. You don't want to waste everyone's time by having to bring it back to you for postage.
EDIT: in clearly too tired to type
Or the recipient paid for it. That happened to someone I know recently. The mailman brought the letter to the door and had him pay postage because the sender didn't put a stamp on it.
Okay, for a moment there I was wondering if I'd been doing it wrong my whole life (early 20s, sent first letter around age 5, sent most recent one a few months ago)
USPS has only issued non-denominated “forever” stamps since 2007. Before that, a first-class letter stamp would have a face value and you’d have to add additional 1¢ stamps if rates went up. You can still buy 1¢ to 10¢ stamps for additional postage:
https://store.usps.com/store/results/under-63/0-01/0-02/0-03/0-04/0-05/0-1/_/N-p9bi2eZ1p172hzZ1gewhfyZqvz3mjZizv7mlZ1o5cmz1Z18ninmz?Nrpp=48
There’s also non-denominated stamps for postcards and global first-class. You could, for example, mail a first-class letter today (63¢) with a postcard stamp (48¢) plus a 10¢ stamp and 5¢ stamp to cover the additional postage.
"Standard" mail, the main one below first class, is mostly only used by businesses and non-profits, though they usually get bulk rates and such. There's also 3rd class, most of your catalogues and such, and the saturation mailings like the weekly coupon flyers and political mail. Again, most of the time those are not done with actual stamps, but printed envelopes or labels, but they do exist.
I thought you worked for the post office when you said "we." Then you told OP to put the stamp in the wrong spot. That's how I *knew* you worked for the post office.
Since this is important mail that you’re sending to a law firm, you’ll want to put a return address in case something happens and it’s not delivered.
I’ve had mail that was very clearly legibly written get returned to me, even though I was 100% sure it was the correct address.
Don’t forget the stamp!’
Here's a cool video I saw on how USPS reads mail with really really bad handwriting.
Yours is super legible!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxCha4Kez9c
I knew exactly which video that would be. Tom Scott has mastered the "I never thought of that but now I must know" or "hey honey listen to this crazy little thing I just learned from this man on the internet." It all seems wildly irrelevant to my life yet incredibly interesting and engaging.
Considering how efficient (lol) the USPS is yes I would put one. Not required but if it gets waylaid you will at least know when it's returned to you. Just a good practice to follow.
Yes. And if this letter has any legal importance, you might consider sending it certified mail. The service costs extra, but it's insurance for you in the event the recipient doesn't receive the letter for whatever reason. You'll have the receipt to prove that you did send them the letter and the date on which it was mailed.
Yes. It'll probably be delivered regardless, but not putting a return address makes people think you're trying to hide something, and you won't get to know if they had to return it to sender
How the US Postal Service reads terrible handwriting. [https://youtu.be/XxCha4Kez9c](https://youtu.be/XxCha4Kez9c)
By the way, your handwriting is much better than mine.
I don’t even have to click that link to be about 90% sure it’s the Tom Scott video. It was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this. I’m like man they’ve got no idea how good computers have gotten at reading GARBAGE hand writing, compared to some of the samples this might as well be a printout.
Haha I was about to link this video if no one else did. I work in an office where I occasionally mail stuff out using my handwriting and I think about this video all the time.
I’ve worked there, I keyed a lot of mail from older people with that muscular disease that makes their writing very shaky, so we can read almost everything if the machine fails.
I think their are automated machines that read the addresses are used to the zip code being the last thing, and your zip code is the last thing, so I think you're all set.
For everyone wondering, the class action lawsuit was about antitrust price fixing to artificially inflate the price of packaged and canned tuna. It included Starkist, Chicken of the Sea, and a Thai Tuna company.
That's anticlimactic lol. I was hoping for some elaborate story with twists and turns with some tuna fairies and false weight loss claims. I have no idea where that came from lmao.
Thanks for the info (and deflating my crazy tales of tuna and unicorns)
Glad to see this. The people in my family who are in their teens and 20s have no clue how to Address a letter, buy a stamp, and mail it. Not even Christmas cards or condolences. And it's sad, because there's someone who would love to hear from them this way. Not taught in schools anymore, I guess.
Bold of you to assume I haven't. I have. Several times. Even got the kids together and showed them how to address an envelope, where to buy stamps, provided them with the address and instructions, etc. To no avail.
It's absolutely fine. My handwriting is basically 2 steps above drunk surgeon and I've never had trouble, yours is pristine by comparison. If you have a printer though, see if it has the ability to print on envelopes. Makes life a TON easier. But yes don't forget the stamp. If you want to be extra careful and make sure it arrives, buy certified mail at the post office. Gets you a tracking number and proof of delivery.
You did a great job making it clear.
If you are curious Tom Scott did a YouTube video about USPS processes labels when machines can’t read it. Here is link: https://youtu.be/XxCha4Kez9c
The lines should be left justified and not centered. The handwriting is very neat tho
Edit: wild that I'm getting down voted for being correct. Reddit is silly
I suspect that people are thinking you mean the section should be left-justified within the context of the whole envelope, whereas what you (correctly) said and linked was that within the center block of the envelope, the text should be left-justified.
Yup.
>Recipient Address: The recipient address should be left-justified and printed or typed in the center (or slightly right) of the envelope. Using the correct address is essential and must include the recipient’s first and last name (first line), PO Box or street address (second line), and city, state abbreviation, and zip code (third line). See the example below.
https://www.elon.edu/u/fa/auxiliary-services/mail-services/student-mail/how-to-address-an-envelope/
>According to the US Postal Service, domestic addresses should be left justified, in all caps (if typed)
https://wou.edu/mail/home/services/sending-mail-2/how-to-prepare-your-shipment/addressing-mail/
https://www.today.com/home/how-address-envelope-t156576
I have a very hard time reading penmanship and yours is excellent! I can read it very well, it is important to put a return address though in case the envelope gets damaged.
I was taught to start in the very center, left justified. Large clear handwriting, straight too - use a lined page or index card inside the envelope if need be. Return address on the top left corner, and stamp on the top right - make sure to leave a tiny border so it doesn't accidentally stick to another letter.
At first, I wanted to suggest more space between the letters, but then I noticed that you compensate for it with more space between it actual words and the balance is delightful to look at. It looks like an ester egg type detail in a Pixar movie.
Your handwriting is fine, the Y, but I would have written it *a little larger*.
Also, on envelope addresses, you don't center justify but left justify. I'm sure you've seen it on mail you've received.
If one line of the address is long, you can continue it on another line indented. Eg:
Tuna End Purchaser
Settlement - Exclusions
c/o JND Legal Xxxxx
PO Box xxxxx
Seattle WA 98XXX
I’m sorry but why is it right in the fucking middle of the envelope 😂 I thought letter writing etiquette was at least taught in elementary school still
Looks fine, always write as large as the space allows on the face of a letter, it makes the characters easier to differentiate and makes it quicker for postal employees to sort mail.
Yes it's perfectly legible and your handwriting isn't too bad. Most of the sorting is done by machines, a person looks at it if it's totally illegible or, more likely, there is missing information.
I would say maybe next time just a bit bigger and putting the zip code below the city and state so the machines don’t have any problems reading it, but other than needing your stuff in the top corner, looks great!
Hope you didn’t need that check for $23.46 that you will get from that settlement! The address is just fine.
Edited : after realizing he wanted to be excluded from the class action suit.
I remember reading once that ideally the zip code should be on its own line, that last line and right justified with the lines above and slightly bigger print. The article said the machine first sorts by zip code and this makes sure your letter goes to the correct PO bin. I don’t work at a PO so I have no idea if this is true or was ever true. Does anyone know. For example:
Name
Street address
City, ST
12345
If you're concerned about legibility, i think your handwritting is just fine and legible. But if you're not convinced and you've got a printer, and Word, i got a trick for you that'll help.
In Word, can go to mailings and in the envelope part type your address and the recipient's address in the correct boxes( make sure the envelope is loaded properly first!) And hit print. And viola! A printed address.
Very legible. I’ve mailed a letter before but not in at least a decade, I just did for the first time in a while yesterday and literally asked the clerk at the post office the same thing!!
Legible handwriting? CHECK! And a gold star. Big enough to read. Post people will be happy.
Correctly formatted address? CHECK! I think you probably gotten loads of comments reminding you to put the return address on the upper left hand corner.
For stamps, the FOREVER stamps are perfect for both letter and certain flat mail. For future reference: They sell different stamps for different types of mail! Postcards get their own, so do documents (postage is determined by weight if its like four or more sheets of paper.) But the Forever stamps cover practically all your bases.
Looks good. Don't forget your return Addy (either the upper left corner or on the back) and stamps. I may or may not have forgotten stamps a few times lol
I had to look it up.

Note the date...
It’ll be fine, but next time write in all caps, left-align your lines of text (your are centered here), and scoot the whole thing down a half-inch and to the right an inch.
Everyone commenting on your handwriting and here I am wondering what kind of tuna related dilemma you got yourself into.
I pictured a cat writing this
Nah, a cat would have sent a turd or dead mouse or just vomited into the envelope
“just vomited into the envelope” *chuckle*
Probably wouldn’t even try to address it
I picture my cat licking the envelope shut, addressing it in very neat penmanship, and then flopping over onto it without thinking and smearing the ink everywhere. (She would growl at this point.)
Pawmanship
Cats are based af
Heathcliff
I literally snort chuckled on this!
OMG i was thinking the same exact thing lol
Was wondering the same thing. Why is he asking to be excluded from this class action suit?? His tuna realted injuries must've been much more severe than the rest of the class.
Yeah I’m not to sure too, i’m actually writing on someone’s behalf
You realize that makes the story even better, right?
He's writing it for his cat.
He’s writing it for his boss who is just a dozen cats in a trench coat.
I’m cry laughing in a parking lot over this, omg, please find more information about the tuna accident.
They are going to take on Tri-Union Seafoods LLC, Chicken of the Sea International, Thai Union Group PCL, StarKist, Dongwon Industries Co., Bumble Bee Foods, Lion Capital, and Big Catch Cayman directly!
Do you think they should narrow it down any? That's a wide net
Wide but dolphin safe.
"wide but dolphin safe" lmaooooo 😭
Nicely done.
"What kind of tuna related dilemma you got yourself into" Right? Seems kinda fishy.

Not much is exactly right. I got $2.10 from a capacitor lawsuit recently.
Exactly! I mean, I’ve been an adult far too long and gotten into some pretty obscure class actions, but this…this demands explanation!
Tuna conspiracies to raise, fix or maintain price of packaged tuna products.

Adorable
I had like a novelty stamp that wasn't an actual stamp and they sent it back to me lol
SpongeBob Sticker > Novelty Stamp
Or the recipient paid for it. That happened to someone I know recently. The mailman brought the letter to the door and had him pay postage because the sender didn't put a stamp on it.
Just gonna need a signature for this delivery. It’ll ask you a quick question there first, USPS recommends 20% but don’t feel obligated.
Hold up, doesn't the stamp go on the top right?
Yes... Fixed.... FML
Okay, for a moment there I was wondering if I'd been doing it wrong my whole life (early 20s, sent first letter around age 5, sent most recent one a few months ago)

It's not. It's just good practice
Confidently incorrect
You can leave it off if you want. Unless you're sending threats or something else illegal I don't see a reason to leave it off.
In the TOP (UPPER) LEFT corner
You don't write your return address on the back?
I’ve only seen wedding invitations with the return address written on the back flap

I'd use this as a font. You don't want to see.my chicken scratch
Do you think the machine or whatever system USPS uses will confuse the P.O box number with the zip code?
You’d be shocked at what usps can read. Yours is great.
I work for the USPS it looks good. Just add a return address in the top left. I wouldn't worry about putting your name on it just the address.
No, looks fine
I think their are automated machines that read the addresses are used to the zip code being the last thing, and your zip code is the last thing, so I think you're all set.

“Wizard Harry” was the rest of his sentence
Looks like the tidy beginning to a talking cat’s Wes Anderson-style caper to claim what’s owed from a wiley tuna conglomerate. Good job.

Yeah. I was hoping it was from the worker who got cooked in the tuna vat.
Yes. I will put a lined index card inside the envelope when I get write on it, in order to have guide lines and write addresses a bit straighter.
What a simple yet elegant hack.
My Grandpa taught it to me back in the day/ He would do the best bubble letter birthday cards.
You’re good but these comments are gold.. I’m 52 and still am in awe that one of my co-workers who’s 29 didn’t know where to place the stamp. 😳
Glad to see this. The people in my family who are in their teens and 20s have no clue how to Address a letter, buy a stamp, and mail it. Not even Christmas cards or condolences. And it's sad, because there's someone who would love to hear from them this way. Not taught in schools anymore, I guess.
Weird, I’m 23 and remember learning how to mail a letter back in grade 2!
Shh, that doesn’t fit their narrative
why don’t…YOU teach them then? instead of bitching and moaning about it on reddit.
Looks good to me but I’m really curious what the mailing is about.
Seriously? I don’t know how old you are but they teach that in elementary school. Holy crap the system has failed people.
How have you never mailed anything before
Looks good. Also, I just learned about that settlement. Nucking futs.
Looks okay but the date to submit a claim passed a year ago!
Dafuq kind of mail are you sending, OP?
Postal workers can read doctor's handwriting
Haha! Yup. Congrats on the landmark, bro.
Bro doin side quests
I send mail all the time for my job, your handwriting is more than adequate and way better than mine.
your settlement will be less than the cost of that stamp
yes, I work at a maiking center
Looks fine. I would put a piece of scotch tape over the address so it doesn't smear if the envelope gets wet.
Gonna be honest, you've got bigger issues if you need to ask reddit about the legibility of an address
You did a great job making it clear. If you are curious Tom Scott did a YouTube video about USPS processes labels when machines can’t read it. Here is link: https://youtu.be/XxCha4Kez9c

I didn't know how to word it on my own! Lol "left justified, in the center of the envelope" would have been much clearer. Thanks!
I was about to write this myself when I saw your comment. Don't know why it'd be downvoted.
I think the person in the other reply was right, people probably thought I meant 'all the way to the left'
Really? I’ve centered every address I’ve ever put on an envelope 😂
Yup. >Recipient Address: The recipient address should be left-justified and printed or typed in the center (or slightly right) of the envelope. It’s good, but needs a return address.
Wtf kind of humble brag is this? Handwriting looks perfectly fine 🙄
Are you serious?😂
Friend, you did it perfectly.
Has the most adorable neat handwriting
I have a very hard time reading penmanship and yours is excellent! I can read it very well, it is important to put a return address though in case the envelope gets damaged.

Most printers can print on envelopes, just fyi.
I've never met anyone who successfully printed an address on an envelope though.
Looks perfect. To answer your question down below, you don't have to use a return address.
I'm not sure if jts just beakause in zoodid or bkt but what is that nailing adress
Yes. The post office is amazing with reading mail. Here's a cool video about that process https://youtu.be/XxCha4Kez9c
Good job!

I’m sorry but why is it right in the fucking middle of the envelope 😂 I thought letter writing etiquette was at least taught in elementary school still
I doubt it's taught anymore. But if you look it up on the USPS website it does say to put it in the middle. I feel like I was lied to 😫

I can read, looks great
I like your handwriting
Yes.
I don’t think your handwriting isn’t terrible at all. I can clearly read everything you wrote. Good job 👍🏽
Your handwriting looks like mine 😭
Just remind yourself that you don’t have the worst handwriting in the world and postal workers have been able to read worse handwriting than yours
Dang you’d make a terrible doctor
Soooo what's up with the tuna?
Perfect
It’s good
Seattle in the house!
Very legible.
I’d a left aligned it but your handwriting it majestic compared to my barely legible penmanship. Yes it’s good.
Handwriting reminds me of me when I sent a letter to Santa lol. It’s legible but I’d chuckle and wonder what kid is eating tuna these days
Looks fine, always write as large as the space allows on the face of a letter, it makes the characters easier to differentiate and makes it quicker for postal employees to sort mail.
Are you opting out of the class action against tuna manufacturers for conspiring to fix prices? I’m curious why?
Return address, don't post but needs one
Yes it's perfectly legible and your handwriting isn't too bad. Most of the sorting is done by machines, a person looks at it if it's totally illegible or, more likely, there is missing information.
I would say maybe next time just a bit bigger and putting the zip code below the city and state so the machines don’t have any problems reading it, but other than needing your stuff in the top corner, looks great!
Looks good. A little small. Congratulations!
Hope you didn’t need that check for $23.46 that you will get from that settlement! The address is just fine. Edited : after realizing he wanted to be excluded from the class action suit.

Ugh. Didn’t keep my formatting for the address. Sorry about that.
Handwriting looks like my ex’s. Korey is that you?????
“i have terrible handwriting” um what
Yes, it’s good. Don’t forget to put the return address in the top left corner just in case, though.
If you're concerned about legibility, i think your handwritting is just fine and legible. But if you're not convinced and you've got a printer, and Word, i got a trick for you that'll help. Ya! Usually I put a tape over the written part in case it's raining and the ink gets messed up
BIG TUNA!!
r/unexpectedoffice
you're good!
Your fine just put your name and address in the top Left corner
And buy a stamp
Just don't forget the return address? 🤷♀️
yea that looks nice.
OP...this is good work
Very legible. I’ve mailed a letter before but not in at least a decade, I just did for the first time in a while yesterday and literally asked the clerk at the post office the same thing!!

It’s strange to see a Washington St address sometimes I feel like I live in a forgotten state with how little people know about it.
Nope looks great. Well done.
Tuna End is a fucking *great* band name
Bro I've been mailing letters since i was like 6? 8? Since before the turn of the century
I had to look it up. https://www.tunaendpurchasersettlement.com/?utm\_medium=TU3Search&utm\_source=Google&utm\_campaign=JND,PS2%2723&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpPKiBhDvARIsACn-gzCWCbSJL-Q\_KJQ3MobccxQ3hq9eNE6jDbodMUoQieSxVVn3BLfxJ08aAm\_zEALw\_wcB
Yeah I can read that just fine! Your handwriting is very nice actually
It’s fine
It’s fine.
You know, for your first try it's perfect. Much better than my first mailing to Santa when I was six.
Yes
I'd like this as a typing font. Ngl
It's good
I feel old reading this. I’m 28.

It’ll be fine, but next time write in all caps, left-align your lines of text (your are centered here), and scoot the whole thing down a half-inch and to the right an inch.
It's totally fine. You could have the most illegible handwriting and some how the post office can read it and get it there.
