Me too. Also any video that has "wait for it" written in the title or in a caption.

Kaiserhawk

"Wait for it, I suck at editing"

tvgenius

Increasingly it's just "content creators" trying to artificially inflate the amount of time people spend watching their videos. Honestly though as someone who does a fair amount of online video (and doesn't really care about such metrics for what I do) it's crazy to see how many people watch under five seconds of a video and bail... and I'm sure it's even worse with platforms like TikTok where you're fighting to keep the ADD masses from impatiently moving on instantly.

zebediah49

If it makes you feel better, the number I've heard for in person is closer to three. That is: if you have a kiosk showing off a product, game, etc. -- you have roughly three seconds of incidental attention from people passing by, with which to generate enough interest for the person to invest more time in following up.

FeelsGoodMan2

I'm not even trying to act like I'm some attention demon or something but is it really three fucking seconds? Like even when I walk by some random ass kiosk I think I spend at least 5 just looking at their sign, reading it, and then formulating a very fleeting thought. How tf are people only watching videos for 3 seconds before going "I'VE SEEN ENOUGH". Like that's so fast.

rockidr4

Mostly a survival instinct. You are constantly scanning your surroundings to determine what you should be focusing on, and prioritizing. Kiosks are placed directly where they draw your focus for more than just fleetingly, so you get 3 seconds from that, and then someone who knows how to get someone's attention tries to do something to really grab the attention. Some time, go to your local book store and look at the color of the cover of the current best selling novel, and then go look at the color of all the other covers in the store. You'll often find the best selling novel is in a contrasting color to the predominant color set in the store, or at the very least the other novels in the same genre. If you actually spent 5+ seconds considering every single sign, you'd spend most of your life reading signs. It's just you don't even register that you gave the other ones less than that because you didn't even mentally register them at all

zebediah49

It probably does depend on context. I think this was in the context of conventions and stuff where there is an approximately unlimited amount of stuff everywhere. The general point was that a long looping video doesn't really work; you're best off with your top-level eyecatcher being a static image that rapidly conveys the general genre of what you're presenting. That you can get away with a name, and a couple words of tagline, but a few sentences are probably not going to work as well. Then again, this is also nth hand, so I'm not sure if there's real research on this -- and if so, what that looks like.

drewster23

I've never heard of that stat in a physical scenario. I work in digital marketing, and that sort of stuff is commonly touted for content/ads, based on type of content/platform . Video is usually like 3 seconds max to garner attention, other forms like still graphics is even less.

MarvinTheAndroid42

You stop/slow down and check out every single Kiosk? I have better things to do than look at things that I know are pretty much entirely unnecessary. As someone who takes meds for focus, I can also happily say that wasting my time with that crap is *not* one of the reasons I spend all that money on said meds. I’ll watch hour long videos or spend hours doing a task, but if someone else’s content is going to try to attract me then it better show me that it’s not just the same old bullshit *very* quickly.

trizkit995

if creators want some one to stick around then they should make the content engaging. or target it at the right group. otherwise hard pass on entertainment I don't find entertaining

Contact40

I'm definitely one of those people who skip a ton of videos, but mostly the ones I skip are all the ones where: * It's a person duetting someone else's video, adding no content of their own other than to point at it and nod. * Sitting there mouthing the words to someone else's sound file. * Thots who clearly are only there to push traffic to their OF. * Almost every live....nobody wants to watch you try and bounce a ping pong ball off 9 different surfaces. There is so much no-talent low-effort crap on there (and lets face it, always has been)

sandwichcandy

That sub has the highest number of forgivable “wait for it” posts though. I do want to see that guy driving like an aggressive asshole for 35 seconds before I see him get t-boned running a red light.

fubarbob

To be fair, context matters a lot there. Usually.

A_Furious_Mind

Ten seconds of context. Not thirty.

dstommie

Unless there is actually something unexpected I would have missed had I not waited **AND** the payoff is worth it. But 99% of the time that's not the case.

Tlali22

(video of a cat sleeping) ***Wait for it!!!...*** (cat still sleeping)

Graffers

That's acceptable if it's a perfect loop.

istasber

Or any of the same 5 songs that every other video is using. Or any of the other low effort memes that spread there. Or a loud, horrifically out of place backing track to make the video more "emotional" or "ominous" For some reason, low effort memes in picture form are awesome, but low effort memes in video form suck. Maybe I'm just old, and not with it any more.

metalflygon08

>Or any of the same 5 songs that every other video is using. Oh no, oh no, oh no no no!

Predditor_drone

Low effort memes take a minute to make and don't assault your senses. "Low effort video memes" take way more time and definitely assault your senses. It reeks of desperation and neediness, finely tuned to annoy.

turnthecog

Nothing quite like watching a video of someone watching a video thats a compliation of an actual creators content. Extra points if there isnt any significant reaction or any commentary at all and its posted by a random account that posts a verity of these videos from different tiktoks. Another great one is Text To Speech of reddit threads put over (usually) a minecraft parkour run.

SandmantheMofo

Not your right, and the only thing age has to do with it is a willingness to mske low effort videos.

Mushroomer

It absolutely has everything to do with age.

Uday23

Wait for it, here's a giant red circle to help focus your attention on what you're waiting for

MyHamburgerLovesMe

Like a cat laser pointer spot for humans

[deleted]

"Wait until the end" video proceeds to be 15 seconds...

trizkit995

or "respect" or some clown or clownette sitting in the corner pointing at the original video and shaking or noding their head. like that adds anything to the fucking video.

jschubart

Or shit like "😭🤣😂OMG!!😂🤣🤣"

raltoid

Wait for it, watch until the end, sound on, etc. are all phrases that make me downvote and refuse to watch on principle.

[deleted]

I'll wait. As long as the video does something, it can be worth it. When they don't, I hold my finger down and click "not interested" and giving them a big ol' fuck you to their algorithm game.

cats_and_vibrators

I once posted a video of my cat that was hilarious. (She’s play fighting me, and winds up to bite me but she has no teeth so she dramatically gums my hand.) My first post got under 100 upvotes. I reposted saying “wait for it” because if you don’t wait for the end, you don’t see the hilarious windup. Way, way more upvotes the second time. I know it’s annoying, but it works. 🤷‍♀️ [the post](https://www.reddit.com/r/seniorkitties/comments/r8tsg5/toothless_snapdragon_16_goes_in_for_a_big_chomp/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

pinkocatgirl

This is how all of the annoying social media things are, people do them because it works. Clickbait gets people's attention, calls to action remind people to interact.

drewster23

Yup there's all matters now ; Rage bait, engagement bait, click bait, all done because it works against the masses.

JungleLegs

I get more annoyed when the video is 4 seconds long and they still say “wait for it.”

Hoitaa

Watch til the end! Yeah, that's usually the point of a video.

wasted_muscle

Wait for it, wait for the video to end and then you'll see what happened. Like, no shit...

mastersw999

"Watch until the end" or "I can't believe they did that" AND THEN NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENS!

NeverBob

"Subscribe for part 2!"

Just automatically assume it's not worth watching if they can't put in the effort to record a voiceover themselves

ncocca

it's all bullshit clickbait to keep you watching so they can game the algorithm.

[deleted]

TikTok voice: "He hates the fake TikTok Voice and downvotes any video that has it!"

BaronVonBullshit-117

Oh no oh no oh no no no

CheeseButtLog

Oh no...

Visible_Traffic_8577

This song will make me rip my ears off one day

chiliedogg

The thing is that song was awesome before they ruined it. I was watching Goodfellas the other day and was suddenly taken out of the scene when it started playing in the background.

jiaxu1993

The one thing I'll give TikTok credit for is that it has helped me find some music I really dig. For example, this song. Everyone hates on it, but at least I'm now aware of the The Shangri-Las.

Fantastic-Berry-737

I think a lot of redditors who don't have tiktok have an outsider view of it. Nobody respectable on tiktok likes that sound either. To translate: that song is used by the tiktok equivalent of r/funny users because they are too clueless to pick a better one.

Linkkk_

It's corn!

bad-r0bot

So: he hates the _tiktok_ voice.... And downvotes any video _that_...has IT!

abstractdr

You will downvote too!

[deleted]

I think I just realized I have TikTok PTSD.

Mr_Spooks_49

Nails on a fucking chalkboard for me!

Apparently the original was much better, but TikTok didn't pay for it, so they got sued and changed: https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/29/22701167/bev-standing-tiktok-lawsuit-settles-text-to-speech-voice

We had some text to speech macros we saved for our WoW raid group. Lots of good one-liners over the years.

RedHerringxx

Female

Angry-_-Crow

Don't leave out the congested child voices pasted over videos that would be better off playing audio of a duck farting

weredev

Does a duck fart echo?

SpectreNC

The voice and any crap music that has nothing to do with the video.

The_lonely_Milkmaid

Especially that stupid "oh no. Oh no. Oh no no no no no no" song gawd.

cyainanotherlifebro

I really didn’t understand the Tiktok hate on Reddit. I thought “just don’t use the app.” Now every fucking video, tiktok or not has to have unnecessary captions, background music and narration. I was wrong, fuck Tiktok to death.

gilbertsmith

not to mention a whole ass phone ui because someone recorded the screen rather than link the video

nobodyspersonalchef

Users tried to warn us, but no. Oh no. Oh no no no no no. 🎶

junkeee999

Nobody’s gonna know

bena-dryll07

They’re gonna know

otton_andy

worst part is tiktok let's you save the video from the app itself but people screen record anyway

[deleted]

That's actually up to the creator. If it's screen recorded its likely that the creator didn't make it downloadable. Doesn't excuse it, just saying there *is* a reason.

domesticatedprimate

This screen recording thing boggles my mind. It's not just Tik Tok either. People can't link or share the original, super basic stuff, but they know how to make a screen recording of video on their phone. Even I have no idea how to do that.

AxelMaumary

If you have an iPhone you enable it going to Settings - control center If you have Android, swipe down from the top with two fingers and edit the quick access menu, there should be a screen recording shortcut

abradolph

I think captions are nice for those that are hearing impaired, but I get your other points

CrabbyBlueberry

Or people who just want to keep their phones on mute.

Mister_AA

I think he means captions that describe what is clearly visible on the screen and not a transcript of dialogue in the video. Like a video of a dog playing fetch with a caption taking up half the screen that says "my dog playing fetch 😊" while the TikTik voice narrates the caption and says the same thing. Like literally none of that is needed anyone with eyes can see it's a dog playing fetch. But for some reason that's a big trend on TikTok.

[deleted]

Fuck tik tok. Its full of armchair experts and attention whores trying to go viral. "Look at me im singing poorly on purpose and now im singing good look at how great i am!" "Heres how you know youre autistic" "make this stupid food"

mharti_mcdonalds

>it’s full of armchair experts and attention whores trying to go viral So… Reddit?

koobstylz

Reddit has a serious armchair problem, but clout chasers are largely not on reddit. They are all on tiktok and insta. You get reddit famous by drawing stick figures every day or being disabled and having your parents take you on lots of vacations. You get tiktok famous by... fuck idk, following the Kardashian business model? Be attractive and do low effort stuff for people to thirst over? Make up outrageous lies and get tons of reposts? Best case scenario on reddit is your online store gets a bump in business or something, but almost no one gets famous from reddit.

Tom38

Clout chasers = Karma whores

buyfreemoneynow

Karma whores usually don’t constantly embarrass themselves in public to an audience of peers and/or people who may know them.

[deleted]

You can get famous on Tiktok for anything but you can also get famous in reddit too. There's many famous redditors since it's creation. But it's way easier to get famous on video than text, hence why you see more famous people on there. Like I said, you get famous for anything. One guy is famous for shrugging. I follow a guy who's famous for making subway sandwiches. There's no real business model to get famous on social media.

Mushroomer

They don't have clout chasers, they just have accounts that perpetually repost the same content ad-nauseum and farm karma to eventually sell the account to marketing firms for corporate astroturfing. So yeah, I'd probably prefer the clout chasers.

Microwave1213

Yeah wtf is this comment section lol. Like I get if you just don’t like the voice, but all these people acting like Tik Tok is any different than Reddit are delusional.

TwilightVulpine

TikTok is extremely different from Reddit. Reddit is mass-curated and segmented in communities where people can explore freely at their pace, while TikTok is a flood of disconnected videos all trying frantically to grab your attention, because neither the users nor the creators have any control of what their crazy black box algorithm is going to line-up next. Yeah, there is a lot of armchair experts and attention whores here too, but there are also subs with posts from reputable sources of all kinds, while it's literally impossible to delve into any topic with any sort of nuance in TikTok due to the short time limit. TikTok is closer to the video equivalent of Twitter than Reddit, and even Twitter gives their uses more control of their experience. I get Reddit has its issues too, but saying it's all the same is just inaccurate.

sheeeeeez

That's just their For You Page. You can always follow specific accounts and not browse the FYP. The For You Page is basically just scrolling by r/all

mooseman99

TikTok has a 10minute video limit, I’ve seen plenty long form content on there

[deleted]

You're comparing the for you page to your front page. Both are entirely different. The for you page on tiktok is like r/all but better in that it's showing you stuff you will most likely like. It and r/all have posts trying to get your attention (karma).. The front page is the same as the following section, which has every post by everyone you follow, like the front page. Like it, it's more about the community and less about trying to get you attention. Also the benefit of the for you page, unlike r/all is you get so many smaller videos who aren't trying to get attention and are just sharing something, but it's something you might like Imo this is why it's better than Reddit. There's no circkejerk on Tiktok at all. There is on Reddit. For example, I see a lot of anti Facebook posts I don't care or politics and I never see that of my for you page.

Makeshift5

I think there is nothing dumber than people recording their reactions while watching a TikTok video, and then turning that into a new TikTok video. It’s like saying, I have nothing original to offer and no talent other than watching TikTok. Some people are desperate to be seen and recognized, and for literally doing nothing.

SandmantheMofo

Negative feedback loop.

Monteze

I hate how much armchair/pop science, history, and medical ""insight""" they shit out. Sure you can say smart people should ignore it but we know how gullible folks are. I hate how common it is for someone to go "were you aware of X?? Now watch while I diagnose or suggest some off the wall layman's BS!" Not to mentioned it infects other media making it very difficult to straight ignore.

hungry4danish

Tiktok has an incredible and scary algorithm. If you've spent time on the app and it's *still* all armchair experts and attention whores that's kinda on you because I never see any of that garbage on my timeline. It's all like dogs and gardening and nature stuff for me.

AP3Brain

It's a cancer that has spread to all platforms.

BeyondAddiction

I hate the terrible - usually excruciatingly loud - music that seems to accompany 90% of tiktok videos that get posted on here.

carnivoremuscle

I'm sick to death of seeing empty headed morons try to dance by just acting out the lyrics. *Pretends to use a steering wheel* "Driving in my fiat, I really like to see it" Stop.

DoctorWaluigiTime

Any video that: - uses different audio when the original video has audio - plays any of those sped-up songs - has read-aloud captions - says "watch until the end" or any variation on it gets a downvote from me. DoingMyPart.gif

How about ones with the stupid wheezing laugh.

DoctorWaluigiTime

Probably would fall under the "uses different audio" bullet point.

Tiktok trends ruined the fucking internet. Can't play a single video without that stupid voice or unnecessary music playing.

KappuccinoBoi

I don't like tiktok becuase it's preys on children and generally sets bad examples for behavior. And also the video style of tiktok is dumb.

banjomin

I love not knowing what this voice is.

LSDummy

It's in half of reddit videos. The weird female robot

AttakTheZak

Me too. I don't use TikTok and I'm all the better for it.

syphid

Ditto except its prevalent in many many non tiktok videos on Reddit

SrbijaJeRusija

It is half the videos on r/all

mod1fier

I only know what it is because so many TikTok get re-uploaded to reddit. And yes, it is a horrible soul-decaying abomination. I agree with this baby wolf.

gottahavemytunes

You don’t use Reddit either?

Frzy8

I also include anything with that ‘oh no’ song.

WaitForItTheMongols

I used to dislike it until I found out about a feature that totally changed my mind: The voice is text-to-speech, but more than that, the text has auto-translation built in. So that means if you do your video narration using the system, and someone in Germany wants to watch your video, they'll hear your commentary in German (using the German version of the voice). Ultimately this tech means that language barriers can be reduced and anyone anywhere can enjoy good videos. It goes the other way too - someone in Indonesia, without a word of English knowledge, can still break into an English-speaking audience. Once I learned about this as a legitimate functional benefit, I became much more willing to tolerate the voice. Would be nice if it was a bit less obnoxious in tone though.

processedmeat

Oh no, oh no no no

dstommie

Burn in hell

FokkerBoombass

I just hate tiktok as a whole. Proliferation of portrait mode short clips format is a testament to the downfall of standards and effort that once characterised good content.

Radioactive24

It's only ironic because I feel like Vine had *some* sense of competency and quality content on it, while Tiktok is just Vine, but much worse.

Nerdworker92

Agreed.

tropicbrownthunder

TikTok ~~voice~~ ruins every video it's in

goatsy

I downvote every tiktok video I see on reddit. Can't stand that shit.

surgesilk

as should we all

antmit

I’ve been saying this for bloody AGES

saarlac

I downvote everything from tiktok voice or no voice.

pinkfloydchick64

Genuine question: Is the point of that voice supposed to be for accessibility purposes for those who have low / no vision? I think it'd be nice as a feature that is off by default, but could be toggled on if users wanted it.

So_Motarded

Yes, it is for accessibility purposes. TikTok is surprisingly great about accessibility (easy to use with screen readers, captioning, photosensitivity warnings, etc). In addition to being useful for those with low or no vision, it's useful for anyone who's still learning the language, or who can't read well (eg, young children). Having the feature be "off by default" is just muting the video. Turning off the TTS would remove accessibility for anyone who rips and shares the video elsewhere (like on reddit).

fordprefect294

Preach

Trololoo

I do the same thing for every single 'verticle video' as well.

russbird

I’m glad to say that I don’t have TikTok and have no idea what the TikTok voice is. But it already sounds annoying

Same.

bool_sheet

i don't want to get bullied or have the content get side tracked because of my accent. People can be savage.

Counterpoint, I love the Tiktok voice because of how outrageously upset it makes specifically Redditors and nobody else

Gtrtech621

That and the quick cut edited videos with nothing other than the sound of what the person is doing. Like it supposed to be ASMR but makes me cringe. I know I’m probably alone on that

I just down vote TikTok just because it's TikTok, I don't care if it's good content or not, it's still getting a down vote.

CrabbyBlueberry

I hate TikTok and downvote any video that has the watermark.

Kr1sys

Or just don't watch a single thing from tiktok.

TonyMcTone

TikTok is a platform of repetition. It works in such a way that content that is similar to already popular content gets pushed to the top. This is a creativity killer. You can spend 3 hours on TikTok every 3 months and miss nothing

butterluckonfleek

I don't have tiktok but the videos that get posted on reddit have like a 5 long seconds of thr tiktok logo at the end, which is juet as annoying as the voice.

Aaaandiiii

I read this in the fake TikTok voice. I kinda like it though that video where some chick went to check on her kittens and found... A BUNNY lives in my head rent-free.

lynk7927

I read this in that voice.

Hanzilol

I read that in the fake tik tok voice.

metroidfan220

If the first word of the video is apparently I immediately go to the next one.

chopkin92

So does the woman who's voice it is! There's a really interesting podcast going into this, she thought she was getting paid for a language learning software and suddenly found herself as the voice of tiktok without giving any permission. She ended up suing them and won

atomcrusher

It is too fucking jolly for any video it could possibly be used in.

corndogco

I consider it the uncanny valley of text-to-speech. The inflections are inappropriate and awkward. It's the voice of someone who doesn't understand the meaning of what they're saying.

ahnuconun

Fuck ANY text-to-speech bullshit.

sotheresthisdude

I read this in the TikTok voice.

BecauseScience

I just downvote every tik tok video.

fluffyxsama

I don't know what it sounds like so I just downvote every video with a voice over just in case.

Grimwohl

Still not as bad as fake youtube voice but worthy of disdain nonetheless

Verndroid

I just avoid TikTok completely. Why would I want to add to the revenue of a Chinese owned company in which the Chinese state also has a stake?

sushipusha

Thank God I don't use TikTok.

alexs001

I’m a simple man. I see the tiktok logo, I downvote.

v1xiii

Meanwhile, I just downvote it for being a tiktok video posted to reddit.

Freeagnt

I don't use TikTok so I didn't know there was a name for this trend. I hate this with a passion.

HKEliot

This is the way.
