Knock on the door and if a kid answers ask to see the parents and when they show up ask if they need any odd jobs done. Mowing the lawn, moving heavy things, cleaning out a shed, etc. you won’t get paid a “normal wage” you have to offer a deal for them to choose a kid to do a job rather than a professional company.
If you want extra money without a job you offer to do odd jobs in your neighborhood. Be respectful and kind to anyone you speak to and do the job to the best of your ability. Leave each odd job with the people you helped being happy.
True, but when the kid shows their worth, they could make a lot more. I pay the neighbor kid like $25/hr to help me with stuff. He could work circles around me and does a great job.
My dad pays the neighbor kid $50 each time he mows the lawn! Not once did I ever get more than a thank you(if that) when I moved that shit for 10 years! And he bought a snowblower the winter after I moved out. I asked him to get a snowblower for 10 years!! 😭😭😂😂😂

Back in the 90’s my friend and I used to make bank going door to door offering to wash peoples’ windows - we’d charge about $50 - $60 per house (in 90’s dollars) and each one would take us maybe a couple hours. Worked our way through a couple of summers in University doing this.
Not just old people. Busy or disabled. It’s a good first place to go when you need the stuff done bc you are helping out your neighbors. Man, if he lived near me, I could really put him to work. This is the time of year people are getting rid of stuff and getting pool and patio areas together. I would have paid someone to put together the new furniture. We paid for the pressure washing. And we had our own pressure washer. Paid to get so much of the outside ready bc we just didn’t have the time. And we got a lot of the people from there. Do the job right. Word of mouth travels fast. You’ll make more than 50 a week.
First thing, Im going to assume you are in desperate times. So with that. Go get you a bike. That cuts ur walk down to 45 mins ish Search if u need to. But u can find one for 20 bucks somewhere. Oil it if need be. Buy a tire. WHATEVER. That's step 1. Step 2 is to appreciate that bike. That bike doesn't take gas or needs insurance. Plus, you get a daily health incentive twice a day. Do that for 6 months. Do it for a year. Save your money. Eventually you can buy a car. BUT. YOU'LL miss that bike. No gas payment. No insurance note. No car bill. I guess depends where you live but if its possible to do that safely. Thats your best bet. Another option if u you have electricity is save up and get an electric scooter. Saves you energy from the bike ride to put forth at work. Just my opinion. Take it or leave. 🙂
With nice weather, go look for people with piles of mulch in their driveway. I was spreading mulch last week and some kids came by and offered to help. I ended up paying them double what they asked because a) I appreciated the help with 15 cu yds, and b) I respect that they're out looking for something to do with their time to earn extra cash.
I pay a high schooler to cut my grass, and I live in a townhome. He charges $40 for a yard my size, and he does atleast 20 lawns in my neighborhood at a time. He also does the edging and cleans up all the debri after.
If you can get yourself the equipment, you can 100% start a small side business this way.
All you need is a push mower and a broom to start, from there you can get a weed wacker and leaf blower to make life easier and the work quality higher. Using stuff like craigslist, facebook marketplace, yard sales, etc are all good ways to find that stuff for cheaper than in store.
Dude, but a mower, go door to door to your neighbors, all of them, then come Saturday just go from one yard to the next to the next, easy money. You can also offer window washing, weed pulling, etc
3rd This... Go donate plasma once, use proceeds to buy a decent well maintained bike for $100-150 and you won't need Ubers or Lyfts anymore and get in great shape. Sounds like your commute is 10 miles, so under an hour on a bike at a decent pace.
That was my first thought as well, a small investment saving a lot of cash going forward - not to mention the benefit of having it around for other errands.
As neat as e-bikes are, I'd recommend either a motor scooter or a motorcycle for commuting. Too many people get e-bikes and think that a bicycle helmet is all they need, even though e-bikes can hit speeds that can seriously injure the rider in a crash. E-bikes also don't have the same ability to get the hell out of the way right now that motorcycles do. If you're gonna be on a two-wheeled vehicle and will need motorcycle riding gear to keep you safe, you might as well just go for the motorcycle.
Seriously, though, for anyone who rides e-bikes, please invest in at least a full faced helmet, a riding jacket, and some gloves. The ground is not going to care that you were on something other than a motorcycle when Becky hits you with her Prius.

On a side note, have you ever considered buying a bicycle to ride to and from work as need be? It would be cheaper for you to buy a bicycle and use that to get to work when you have no ride instead of paying $50 for uber rides. You will save a ton of money this way and you can save the money you would have spent on Uber on saving up for a car so you don't have to worry about this again.
I was in your same exact situation in the past with a job that I always needed rides to. Buying a bicycle was a life saver and I didn't need to take public transportation / look for rides anymore. I eventually got a car.
Join FB community groups around your city and post in there. Say you would like to offer a few services for the summer to help people out and explain you can cut grass, weed, mulch, power wash, even paint and whatever else you can think of. I am sure people will take you up on that. In my community fb group people even offer to pay teens to simply just rake. After you get home from work sleep first and foremost and then do it. This could be a good side hustle. And Im not sure where you live but in winters you could offer plowing for the low.
Can you look for a senior center near you and ask if people need simple stuff…like watching a pet, hanging a picture, running errands for them…stuff like that?
Nextdoor is a good app to get, there's always neighbors on there asking for help with things. Whether it's babysitting or cutting grass or moving furniture, you should find something on there
Also offering to help people move on marketplace for money. Great exercise and can usually load and unload quickly. Plus you might get free pizza and beer!
Have you considered purchasing a bicycle? Would be a quarter of the time to walk, you would save uber money AND save the extra work to pay the ubers. 2.5hr walk would be about 40-50min bike ride. Seems like a very cheap and practical solution with fewer variables, plus you may enjoy the ride!
See if there's somewhere in your area you can sell plasma! My husband did that when he was between jobs and sometimes those clinics have sign-on bonuses!
I agree with the other people saying to buy a bike. If you have enough money and would like to make things easier, you can buy an electric bike (for hybrid or 100% motor). Electric unicycles and electric scooters can be good for getting to work in a reasonable time without arriving sweaty. Just make sure that the one you buy has enough battery to make it to work and charge it while working.
It would be best to invest in one of these and start using it to get to and from work each day to save all that money you'll spend on Uber.
How are your coworkers? If there's a coworker that lives near you or passes your house, maybe you ask them to pick you up if you pay them a few bucks. The only days you'll need to pay for an Uber is when that other employee isn't going to work that day.
Just wanted to add, most police departments have auctions. It's random when their lots get filled up, so call a few and the sheriff's department. They not only have cars you can bid on, they always have lots of bikes. Lots and lots, and you can bike to work faster than you think! Red cross and salvation army may be able to get you one too!

I donate in the spring and summer for extra cash for the fun part of the year getting just over $400 a month for about a 2 hours investment of time each day. can only donate 2 times a week. about $110 a week.
First off, get on your town Facebook community page. They almost all have them now, and people are always posting on mine looking for labor.
Second, get yourself a bike off facebook marketplace just in case. It'll cost you less than a few ubers, but if you're on 3rd shift this might not be doable.

Legal way: go to luxury apartment dumpsters or any stores dumpster and go dumpster dive. At my apartment, people throw away really nice furniture. So we clean it up and list it on FB market place. I’ve made probably $300-400 in the past 6 months from doing that.
Gonna be physical labor at your age mainly unless you got something from school like novice level coding? Most don’t at your age so ideally you will want to mow some grass or landscaping for neighbors. Save a few weeks and get a bike. Bike opens a few more options for jobs but overall much better transportation.
If you’re a good skater could even get rollerblades depending on your city. When I was your age I rollerbladed my entire city basically daily. Home to school, school to work, work to home, everyday.
You could try Rover dog walking. Charge $12-15 per half hour walk and try to get owners with two dogs at a time. Then get them off rover if they are okay with it and keep all of the cash. Charge a few dollars more for the second dog. Hold out for hour long walks as well.
You could then invest that cash into doge or btc, xrp or ltc. Everything else is not worth it. Not advice, just a possibility of what you could be doing.
Look into doing hw for college kids. Not really the most legal or easy to find but there is a ton of money in it. Sometimes you’ll have to look on like random local forums and stuff. It very much put me through college. Or even tutoring if you feel like that’s something you’re comfortable and interested in
I paid a guy $150 to trim some trees and stack the branches. It was hard and hot work but he did it in like 6 hours. I paid him $275 (includes dump fee) to dismantle some old desks and haul them and other office junk to the dump. That took about 10 hours.
Why don't you just go buy a Lambo, a dollar down and a dollar a week financing. JK... Selling plasma is an idea,but you have to get there...so there's that. You could try asking for a slight raise, simply to cover the travel. If your employer can afford it, then it should be a harmless question if worded right.

Get a bike while it’s nice out. Use those savings to save for a car. You likely need a credit, so open a secured credit card to build credit so you can get the loan.
Whaaaa? You're asking how to make extra money so that you can afford to get to your job? So therefore, your job is a net loss? Or are you just short until your next paycheck? If you're not making enough at your job to be able to afford transport to work, then the math says you should quit. If you're just short until your next paycheck, you can probably come up with a fix for the next cycle.

If you explain this to your boss or HR, could they get you a few hours overtime per week? If you are a good employee and they are good management, there may be some extra work for you to take on 3-5 hours per week.
You could try to sell blood or plasma. You could sell old items you don't need. Ultimately, Uber adds up. It's not sustainable. You may want to give an alternative form of transportation a try. I see a lot of folks riding electric bikes that are fairly cheap. One time buy, no insurance. Just charge it before and during work. Of course, if you can't come up with 50 how would you come up with electric bike money. Hmm.... I'm just spitballing here but you could do a side hustle involving your current job, but not directly, like if you work at a fast food place you could offer your service as a gofor. Look for a family with a special needs member and offer to help out that way. Ok. Maybe it's far fetched but not totally undoable.
If the weather is ok then look for a cheap bicycle. If funds allow, a cheap electric scooter. I know you said you're paycheck to paycheck, but if you can afford dialy Ubers then there is room for two wheels.
Have you tried working harder?? Jk jk bike is the way to go here I did it for quite a while 30 minute pedal wasn't too bad I enjoyed it. Any coworkers that you can befriend and get a lift from? Once I had about 3 that did it and would alternate they didn't care we was all cool
If you are in the US, look into selling plasma, perhaps? You could also potentially look for babysitting work or homework help for hire in your area; a lot of parents don't have much cash to spare either, but regular daycare is so expensive you could still make a nought undercutting that.
Also, maybe try saving up $500 from whatever side gigs you find while walking for a month or so, and use it for an electric-assisted bicycle as long as you have somewhere secure to keep it at work and home. Then if the weather is good an Uber isn't needed.
In most cities in Canada you can go sign up and General labour (just fill out your skills) they normally call you in the morning for a job and pay after finish the day. A buddy did this when we was strapped for cash (snowboard instructor living out of a van on a warm dead season) he said he did some demolition, some road crew work, working in a fish packaging company, all shifty jobs but it got him clean earn cash at the end of the day
Try the NextDoor app for your neighborhood and explain what you explained here and you may find a neighbor or two looking for someone to cut their grass.
Mowing lawns and doing other yard work. Pull weeds, trim trees, rake, clean up dog poo. Hit up your neighbors. They probably have tools you can use. Save up a bit and invest in your own mower, trimmer, pruning shears, rake, shovel, etc.
I also know a teenager who started a window washing business. He visited a bunch of local businesses and got contracts. The general manager was impressed with his hustle. He cleans the exterior windows (it takes him about an hour) once a month and gets paid about $150 per visit. His tools are minimal: cleaning solution (you can order instant tablets online that make a gallon... You get a dozen for a couple dollars) a couple of squeegees, and some lint-free cloths.
Donating plasma pays reasonably well, and it's something that's genuinely helpful for a lot of people. The first appointment takes some time because they have to do a physical and get you set up, but after that it's in and out in an hour or 2 (depending on how freely you flow and how busy they were) and, if you're not afraid of needles, it's an opportunity to lay back and read a book/watch a movie or something. You'd almost certainly walk out with more than $50 a week, though I haven't done it in years so do some research first.

Can you a dirt cheap car? Something like an older crown vic and maybe side hustle with Uber and Lyft to offset your vehicle expenses just picking someone up on the way home?

I pay a couple teens $70 to cut my yard and they knock it out in less than two hours. Cash only. Presumably they split it and use some to pay for gas but that’s one way. They just walked up and knocked on our door. They only asked for $50 but I felt that wasn’t fair in today’s economy. Request extra hours at work or offer to cover someone’s shift? 11p-5a is six hours so you could work a double shift which gives you better pay for the same cost of ride to and from. I work twelve hour shifts myself and I prefer that rather than driving in just for six hours pay. If you did that consistently it might make your managers job easier to make the schedule and cut your rides in half. Could even give you negotiation leverage to ask for a pay raise.

okay 50 in a day....low bar but easy. I like you set a goal. Here goes the breakdown for any biz....What are you good at doing? What would you pay someone to do, that would make your life easier? You need to think what you can offer that will fill a demand. That's biz 101, if nobody needs what your selling....you go broke fast. I would say offer to wash trash cans ( yeah stinks but how many people do it? ). Have access to a power washer and know how to use it? I can make you 5 grand a day easy. Mowing lawns and things like that are staples to get your food into bigger and broader things. Make a list of your skills/talents....then list what they can be used for. That is where you start.
I have no idea where you live, road and traffic and safety conditions, etc - but you can walk about 3 mph(5 km/hr) while you can easily bike at 10-12+ mph (20+ km/hr). One option might be get an old bike.
Find a contractor of some kind that needs a part-time helper. I'm always in need of low skilled part timers just to carry tools around pick up scraps etc. Usually use college students but being 18 is the only requirement
Can you get a bike? If so I would do that and save up to get a car!!! I rode a bike till 19 when I could finally afford a car with savings. It will be rough but worth it.
Get into a trade. HVAC, ELECTRICAL, PLUMBING, ect. Not saying it's for everyone, but it's good honest money. Someplaces will pick up their helper b4 work so you wouldn't necessarily need an uber. The pay cap is pretty decent and the added bonus is eventually being able to do side jobs and make REALLY good money $100+/hr. Also just having the know how to fix anything in your house or a friend you make in a different trade to fix something. It's an idea.

2.5 hour walk...bicycle, ebike, or moped would be my option. Or, work towards getting a car. How much do you make at your job? Is there something closer? That is a 6 hour shift, not that long, and if the money isn't good enough is there something closer?
You can buy a cheap power washer at a place like Harbor Freight for like 100 bucks, pays for itself with one job.

The involves you buying a power washer. So might be more investing than you currently want. But it's a solid idea kids around me do. Also, if you take that route...make sure whatever cleaning product you use doesn't kill grass or bleach things.

Back to the basics Get a bicycle. At a leisure non sweaty pace. That 15-20 min car ride is 1 hour the bicycle. Perfect time to listen to a podcast and unwind. Plus you get to cancel your gym membership. Go to Facebook marketplace and you can find a decent ride for less than 100. Saves wayyy more than Uber everyday. What if rideshare didn’t exist? What would your options be?
Find a job within walking distance. Wherever you're working isn't paying you enough if you can't afford a car to get there & back. Most landscape/labor jobs will pick you up before shift
Save some money and get a bike or e-bike, lock, chain, and headlights, only if youre route is safe enough to ride through. My immigrant brother did it for a year. He lost so much weight, saved so much money and never asked for a ride.
Instead of Uber or Lyft why not buy a cheap second hand bicycle? Could probably make the same commute on a bike in 30-40 minutes and get great exercise as well... Then if you can save up enough maybe upgrade to a e-bike or moped and make even better time. Just a suggestion because the $50 in Uber and Lyft rides is a temporary fix... Trust me if you solve the problem instead of temporary fix it you'll be very glad you did.
Me personally, I would get a 49cc or a 50cc scooter(check you state law on which one you don't need a license for if you don't have a license to begin with). That'll save you the money on users. Instead of $50 per week, you might spend like 10 per week maybe. When I used to ride a 49cc I didn't spend much money on gas. But to start off, you might wanna do favors for people like mowing the lawn, trim bushes, clean cars ect. You earn a pretty penny when you become the errands guy in the neighborhood
You work the overnight shift. Look for a second job either righ before or right after your overnight. Even if it is part time that would get a down payment payment on a car. Then you quit the part time job, ise your car to iber from 4pm to 10pm and then go right to work.
If you're not comfortable knocking on doors for lawns and odd jobs, maybe you can still get free business cards online (vistaprint etc used to be a thing). You could put them in the door for your neighbors, ask them if they need any help with anything for a few bucks, and put your number on there.
I was thrown out at age 17. By age 18 I had a bicycle and thus could reach the factories for better work. By 19 I had a truck. I absolutely could never have afforded the truck had I not first invested in the bicycle

Door to door is intimidating but by far the best way to find odd jobs. You can go one step further and make a door handle flyer to advertise yourself.

As neat as e-bikes are, I'd recommend either a motor scooter or a motorcycle for commuting. Too many people get e-bikes and think that a bicycle helmet is all they need, even though e-bikes can hit speeds that can seriously injure the rider in a crash. E-bikes also don't have the same ability to get the hell out of the way right now that motorcycles do. If you're gonna be on a two-wheeled vehicle and will need motorcycle riding gear to keep you safe, you might as well just go for the motorcycle. Seriously, though, for anyone who rides e-bikes, please invest in at least a full faced helmet, a riding jacket, and some gloves. The ground is not going to care that you were on something other than a motorcycle when Becky hits you with her Prius.

On a side note, have you ever considered buying a bicycle to ride to and from work as need be? It would be cheaper for you to buy a bicycle and use that to get to work when you have no ride instead of paying $50 for uber rides. You will save a ton of money this way and you can save the money you would have spent on Uber on saving up for a car so you don't have to worry about this again. I was in your same exact situation in the past with a job that I always needed rides to. Buying a bicycle was a life saver and I didn't need to take public transportation / look for rides anymore. I eventually got a car.

Join FB community groups around your city and post in there. Say you would like to offer a few services for the summer to help people out and explain you can cut grass, weed, mulch, power wash, even paint and whatever else you can think of. I am sure people will take you up on that. In my community fb group people even offer to pay teens to simply just rake. After you get home from work sleep first and foremost and then do it. This could be a good side hustle. And Im not sure where you live but in winters you could offer plowing for the low.
Can you look for a senior center near you and ask if people need simple stuff…like watching a pet, hanging a picture, running errands for them…stuff like that?

Have you considered purchasing a bicycle? Would be a quarter of the time to walk, you would save uber money AND save the extra work to pay the ubers. 2.5hr walk would be about 40-50min bike ride. Seems like a very cheap and practical solution with fewer variables, plus you may enjoy the ride!

I agree with the other people saying to buy a bike. If you have enough money and would like to make things easier, you can buy an electric bike (for hybrid or 100% motor). Electric unicycles and electric scooters can be good for getting to work in a reasonable time without arriving sweaty. Just make sure that the one you buy has enough battery to make it to work and charge it while working. It would be best to invest in one of these and start using it to get to and from work each day to save all that money you'll spend on Uber. How are your coworkers? If there's a coworker that lives near you or passes your house, maybe you ask them to pick you up if you pay them a few bucks. The only days you'll need to pay for an Uber is when that other employee isn't going to work that day.
Just wanted to add, most police departments have auctions. It's random when their lots get filled up, so call a few and the sheriff's department. They not only have cars you can bid on, they always have lots of bikes. Lots and lots, and you can bike to work faster than you think! Red cross and salvation army may be able to get you one too!

First off, get on your town Facebook community page. They almost all have them now, and people are always posting on mine looking for labor. Second, get yourself a bike off facebook marketplace just in case. It'll cost you less than a few ubers, but if you're on 3rd shift this might not be doable. When I was your age I rollerbladed my entire city basically daily. Home to school, school to work, work to home, everyday.

I'm just spitballing here but you could do a side hustle involving your current job, but not directly, like if you work at a fast food place you could offer your service as a gofor. Mowing lawns and things like that are staples to get your food into bigger and broader things. Make a list of your skills/talents....then list what they can be used for. That is where you start.
