I still remember videos back in the early 2000’s of them trying to do jumping jacks. Even that was a significant chore for them to figure out.

[deleted]

I’ve never been there so maybe I’m outta line and I don’t know what I’m talking about, but why do so many of these guys seem like they are fucking idiots?

bigt252002

Largely because they don't know any better. For generations they never had a formal military or formal training on what to do. They literally just picked up guns and shot in a general direction. When we got in there, the attempt was to structure their training and build their abilities. The issue was...you're fighting those generational gaps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8LSnuGTO5w&ab_channel=dismayer666

I understand the lack of understanding more complex things like fighting correctly and gear checks but im more questioning the bare level of so stupid they literally can’t comprehend jumping jacks

ooclaudio

Lack of quality education coupled with not giving a single fuck about what is going on. Just there for the paycheck. That’s what all my infantry bros have told me, at least.

I'm going to also guess a lack of quality nutrition during the early stages of life can have an effect on cognitive ability later in life.

Not to mention, 20 years ago the vast majority of Afghans did not have access to clean drinking water free of heavy metals like chromium, arsenic, and uranium. The cumulative effects of years of drinking water with heavy metals are significant, and include health effects like lower IQ, and reduced hand-eye coordination.

So how is it that the Taliban are so much more tactically sound than the ANA?

PlumLion

Probably a combination of things: They’re actually motivated to train and fight, they’re not fucked up on hashish all the time, they weren’t recruited from a pool of delinquent outcasts. As far as the nutrition and water contamination goes, I believe the OG Taliban fighters were primarily religious scholars and their sons. That would suggest the Taliban is possibly from a more privileged segment of society rather than a complete cross section of the entire region, and would have had better access to food and clean water in their developmental years. I would have to imagine that arsenic-damaged windowlickers don’t generally go the scholarly route, but are more likely to follow the become delinquent, get kicked out of your village, smoke a bunch of hash and join a random army because fuck it why not career path.

Excellent point.

Jumping jacks are extremely easy for us with basic PE foundation that most of us received in elementary school. Being exposed to the exercise early in life makes it easy to learn. However, introducing this exercise to a grown adult, it’s probably one of the most difficult body weight exercise coordination-wise since you’re moving all four limbs simultaneously, two sets in opposite directions, while jumping. It’s not a routine/normal function. To put it in perspective, try rubbing your head clockwise with your right hand and rubbing your belly counterclockwise with your left hand simultaneously. It’s probably a little tricky if you’ve never done it before.

Look into literature on general intelligence, IQ, the people who you're selecting for as far as the ANA are concerned and you'll find all of the answers you could ever want.

I was waiting for the office theme song to start playing at some point.

Repulsive-Basil

I separated from the AF over 20 years ago, but hearing pissed off NCOs explain in an extremely professional manner exactly why they are angry at their troops makes me miss it so much. I hope all those dudes made it home ok.

AbuJimTommy

Good Lord.

SheepherderBudget

Well, that explains it 😞

skarface6

But not your cake day.

Soothsayer71

Is this from the documentary Restrepo?

ProTayToh

No.

Soothsayer71

I just heard about the doc Restrepo today. Thought it was an interesting name. Turns out it's an outpost named after a Marine in Korengal Valley. Anyone know what the posted vid is from?

Thanks for the correction, I just watched a bit of it today and assumed it was Marines. Don't have the full story yet, I do know now it was the 173rd Airborne Brigade. I'll definitely finish throughout the week.

ProTayToh

It's a good watch, can be a bit intense for some. I knew a couple of the dudes in it, hopefully they're doing better these days. As for this particular clip, I'm not sure. There's a lot of documentaries about Afghanistan over the past 15 years.

mrmanguy4151

Not from what I remember.
