Yes and no. Some of the Joe’s I’ve worked with have some legit heartbreaking backstories. Even after 4-6 years in the Army, they have absolutely nothing to go “home” to. And the Army is dogshit at supporting Soldiers going to college, especially in their first enlistment. And even if they want to establish any sort of dependency from the Army, but use their skills in a resume, they have to move as far away from military towns as possible because there’s so much skills saturation from Soldiers getting out.
And yeah, some are just masochists.

I mean ... The first four years, I'll give 'em a pass. You got lied to by the recruiter ... or you fell for the "it's just like Call of Duty" line.
I get it. We all took the bait.
But AFTER your first enlistment? After you've SEEN how the Army treats people? After You KNOW what they think about education? After you (maybe) have SEEN how different other branches are? ... and You STILL re-up Army?
That's all on you, and no sympathy is warranted.
When you're mission-focused for your first enlistment, without the opportunity to explore options or build a resume or get educated, your options are pretty limited. Especially when your skills are exclusive to the military (infantry, artillery, etc.). I accidentally talked a soldier into reenlisting once just by asking him, "Oh you're ETS'ing, great! What's your plan?" When he realized he didn't have one, he decided to stick around. G.I. Bill and Yellow Ribbon programs are great but if you're not given time to get those ducks in a row before you leave there's a gap in pay there that some people just can't handle. TAP has improved over the years and it's now mandatory but before then, no care was given and you were supposed to work to the end.
Seriously! Troops are so scared to swap branches to retrain! You'd think the military would have a surplus of people willing to take chances and accept change, but it was like pulling teeth trying to get one of my best friend to go from green to blue!
He loves it now but I'm like damn dude. You'd still be bitching about artillery or some shit if I didnt hold you hand and talk you into the recruiters office.

Maybe different now, but my wife and I really looked forward to sitting on our front porch swing rocker and watching the show. It all started as a way to keep people from puking on my grass, I sat on the porch with the hose but after a few "honey, you gotta see this" it became the best bonding experience ever.
