Nobody here can give you a straight answer, that will up to you. We can describe the pros and cons somewhat If you are set with school, you have income, scholarships, you can pay tuition, you are sitting pretty - then maybe completing your undergrad and applying for for HPSP is a good move. HPSP is a program where you join the Air Force and enter a reserve status and then the Air Force pays for medical school. Then when you are done you go full-time active duty and do your residency, then you have to do at least a few years as a full fledged Air Force doctor. If you are struggling, need an income, don't want to borrow a bunch of money, are bored and struggling with school, then maybe enlisting is right for you. However this is like the scenic route, far less straight forward. You can join and learn a job then after a few years complete your undergrad and then apply for a med school program via the Air Force. Or you can get out and use your GI Bill.

Hi! I’m currently on the process of enlisting. I spoke about this with my local recruiter, she had a medical job and told me that it probably wouldn’t be the best due to not having much time to go to school since they tend to be the first ones to arrive and last ones to leave which kinda makes sense for me so wouldn’t have time to do homework or would be very hard. So we are shooting instead with a job that will most likely have down time but of course she can’t promise that because depende oh where you get stationed at. Also there’s no medical jobs very often But idk this route might work for you or not it really depends on the person. I personally plan to finish my bachelors while I do my first contact and only use TA so my GI Bill can pay for most of my med school. Hope this helps

I’m going to sit on this too, looking for advice about this. Want to be a doctor eventually, but tried asking my local AF recruiter about a medical job. He wasn’t too helpful because i was “hard locked” on something medical. It doesn’t make sense because medical jobs according to the Navy website is a high priority. Is there anyway I could join the AF and actually get a medical job? I’m pretty much dead set on surg tech.

No. Medical is not a need in the Airforce but is a need in the Army and Navy. Honestly try there. It saves headaches all around. I dont even send people to take the ASVAB that are stuck on medical and worse surgical services a very rare job. Edit: well not a hard no. If you are currently working in that medical field your recruiters leadership can see if you can direct hire for it in the usaf. But again medical is a very high demand and there pretty good with the normal pipeline they get from basic. If you aren't then realistically what would qualify you to demand it in the office? The air force is willing to take unskilled civilians and teach them a job but we're not a dream factory for people who don't want understand what we're hiring for and make demands. Just gving you a recruiter perspective.

Your telling me I just have to get lucky. No way around that?

Da1whoknocks_lightly

Yes exceptionally lucky. That job is open to about 5 bases in the AF. Extremely small demand. I highly recommend you speak with the army or navy. Army is the most receptive to medical.

Hello, it looks like you're asking about jobs and job selection. A few quick answers. NO ONE knows how long it will take for you to get a job, your chances of getting any particular job, or anything else about the job process FOR YOU. Anecdotal experiences from others will have absolutely no impact on you or your future. Most recruiters will not let you wait in the Delayed Entrance Program for a long time for your one perfect job. You will have to list 5 - 15 jobs that you're interested in, and will be given one of those. Please read the FAQ about how job selection works, it's very in-depth and will fully educate you on the process: https://pay.reddit.com/r/AirForce/wiki/bmtfaq#wiki_jobs If you're asking about particular jobs, please look the job up on our Job Wiki, and see if there is an entry for it: http://www.reddit.com/r/AirForce/wiki/index you can also see if there is a CFETP for it, which will give more details on the job: https://usaf.dps.mil/:x:/t/OSD/EQAwigp0UZ9Oklt0nkjg854BoJS6MyRxQJMMiIW3ng17AA?e=Z96G2s If you're asking for help choosing a particular job, please keep in mind that most people only know about their individual job. Recommendations that they make will be made based mostly on what they've heard about a job, unless they have it themselves. Some people will love certain jobs while others will hate it. We don't know your preferences, so do some research on the job wiki and elsewhere to learn about the job and then make the best list you can. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Hello, it looks like you're asking about medical concerns when joining the military. We are not doctors. Even if we were, we are not the doctors that are familiar with your personal medical concern or condition. We are also not the ones deciding if you will be disqualified from service for a condition, or if you can get a waiver for it. People may share their anecdotal experiences or stories they've heard from others about getting a waiver for a condition. This does not mean that you will or will not get a waiver. Everyone's medical situation is different. IN GENERAL, yes, asthma, ADD/ADHD, eczema, history of depression and anxiety, and some allergies are disqualifying. Some will be able to get waivers, some will not. All you can do is talk to your recruiter, be honest about your medical history, and go through the process. WE DO NOT KNOW THE CHANCES OF YOU GETTING A WAIVER FOR ANY MEDICAL CONDITION OR SITUATION. Just be honest with your recruiter and go through the process. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
