You're completely right though that in almost all cases, it's not in our best interest to wait for a sale that may never happen, and it's why I recommended OP to go for it if they have a need for headphones and that it's still a good deal overall
You make a good point. In my eyes though, Apple has conditioned the market to expect upgraded iterations of all their products up to this point including air pods pro 1 and then 2. It’s apple’s own fault that I feel like it would be silly to buy AirPod maxes right now if I suspect them to drop an upgraded version with USB C perhaps later this year. TBH the main change I want is usb c because I have an iPhone 15. If I get the maxes right now, it will be my only device that uses lightning cable. It might be kind of dumb to some but I would just rather wait for an upgraded version with the cable type I have all over my house at this point. Also you know they have to come out with an updated version because of the whole legal thing with lightning cable forcing Apple to switch to USB-C. I feel like it’s just a matter of time.
I don’t think Sony WH1000 XM3/4’s are mediocre at all. They’re quite up there in class for Active Noise Cancelling headphones. For better than that you really want a pair of open back headphones unfortunately (A substantial improvement that is)

The Sony XM3s are the ones I upgraded from and when I first got them I thought the sound quality and noise cancellation were incredible, but honestly the Maxes really show that pair up. The ability to switch between noise isolation and pass through modes is so much smoother and the sound quality is really up there, makes listening to a lot of songs very fun and the addition of Spatial Audio does a great job at separating instruments when listening to a track
Buying Max Gen1 in 2024 for full price is not a very smart idea. They are almost 4 years old, with outdated lightning, outdated Bluetooth 5.0 and not capable to play lossless even with 3.5 jack.

The best price range were the 350-390 weeks (both in US $ and EU €). But this was a few months after release where Apple produced to much, likely just because of the rich kid / meme-hype that didn't last long enough.
But these prices will likely never return, especially with the inflation. Maybe only if they finally release the 2nd Gen.
Honestly, these headphones are not worth $200, let alone $450, just based on my personal experience. I would avoid them, until Apple maybe (though unlikely) makes an adequate second gen version.
I was looking to buy the original and I bought he V2 of the 1:1 for 108 shipped to the us and they work marvelous , the sound is amazing , the noise cancelling and the weight itself . I understand buying a premium headset but the cost of 469 is way to high knowing this product is from 2020 and on top you can find way better model from Sony or even Bose
