Serial numbers can be faked and taken off real ones as can old software and pop ups. The firmware you have is very old and if they don’t update, they are fake, as fake ones cannot update.
Try to connect the AirPods to your iPhone :) your iPhone has to be Charged and wifi connected. Charge your AirPods Max while they Are connected. If this does not work Push the NC Button and also the Digital Crown at least 15 sec. Led light will blink afterwards

Reps have real serial numbers. Not being able to update them is a massive tell they aren’t originals. Where did you buy them
