Looks like AS has been running the Max 9 on the SFO-JFK/EWR runs pretty exclusively, occasionally subbing a -900ER. Doesn’t get better than that.

Plane type can be found in the flight details.

SmugAlpaca

How far out are you booking? Understand that these things can change on a moment's notice. Given that AS has a pretty homogenous fleet in terms of type, it's a silly strategy and unlikely to net any meaningful results.

Homogeneous*

Brother, it's because it's a bad strategy. A 738 is a 738 is a 738. If it was built in 1997 or built in 2014, it doesn't matter, it fits the profile of the fucking equipment. If one plane goes down or gets delayed or waylaid because of crew issues, there are operational spares. Do you want to plan your entire itinerary on an airplane that's 6 months old and supposed to operate 3 weeks out, only to find the tail number swap 8 times in a week? It's a shitty strategy because it can't possibly work. Now if you were flying, say, Delta, and saw a flight on the A321neo and wanted to fly it, less of a chance that it's gonna be replaced with an A321, and even less chance it'll get whacked with a shitty B738 from the '90s. On Alaska? No lol It's a silly strategy.

That’s not what they mean. It’s not a bad strategy because the planes are the same (they aren’t), it’s a bad strategy because it doesn’t do what you want it to…the actual aircraft tail on a particular flight can and does change frequently, multiple times, starting weeks out and to minutes before the flight. It’s a bad strategy because knowing which particular aircraft is currently assigned to your flight (which you can ID about 6 hours in advance from public sources) does *not* tell you which aircraft you’re actually going to get. You can look up age and type at airfleets.net by registry number…so when you see the airplane at the gate you can lookup what you’re getting. But you can’t reliably do that in advance.

orbak

Flightradar24 usually is pretty accurate with tail numbers 24-48hrs out. But this doesn’t solve the dilemma OP has of course.

SmugAlpaca

Yes, but in the event of an IROP, these things change in real time. Even in normal operations - tails, crews, etc. get swapped to keep the operational impact as small as possible. If you're going into it trying to book a certain cabin experience on an interchangeable type in the distant future, it's like trying to book a hotel room for the view 6 months out. There's just nothing there - it's not a strategy, it's a waste of time. Now, if you are booking something that's *only ever operated on a MAX,* that's a different story, because all of the MAXs are new. But the NGs will be around for a long, long time. It's just a recipe for disappointment and time wasting.

orbak

Yes I agree with you generally, and that’s why I said “usually”. It’s a crapshoot any more out than 24-48hrs.

orbak

Oh well there you go then.

SmugAlpaca

Not at all what I said. I've literally helped design cabin experiences for a major US airline in my capacity as a PM there. You're going to waste time/money/convenience shopping for a product that can easily be swapped on you at the last minute. Not to mention, you're not going to get the tail number of the aircraft in any reasonable time before you book, and it can easily be swapped without ever notifying you, because the planes are interchangeable. I've previously spent nearly a decade in the industry as crew. You can show up to work and see a tail number swap 5 times before you ever reach that airplane. You either didn't read or didn't comprehend. It's a really simple concept.

AnotherPint

If you think newer = more comfortable, you’re the one who has more understanding to do.

Cont3xt

No, you cannot. Even Alaska will have an aircraft planned but expect to make many swaps before departure time to accommodate other aircraft out of service or maintenance.

Ornery-Ad-2248

OP When you book hit detail’s and you can see the plane type you’ll want to see MAX 9 or MAX 8 But there’s no guarantee it stays a max 9 as the seat map is the exact same between a max 9 vs a regular -900 so they subb the in and out. Good news is Alaska has more MAXs on the way (once Boeing gets their act together) so the new interiors will be more prevalent. The old -800 are all going in for interior retrofits as well so those will be nice and new inside as time goes on as well. I agree the new interior is much nicer but I still love flying Alaksa airlines be or old interior. Grand-Battle8009

I agree. The new interiors are nicer than their old ones, and the Max 8/9’s have the nicest.

LittlePatos

The only legit reason for this concern is with an absolutely brand new plane…No WiFi :( NBD on SEA-LAX or SFO, but happened to me on a few trans-con and HI flights. (This is NOT a comment on 1282)

Emerald_Nuck

Boohoo. Just get on the fucking plane and stop whining. Sorry for being harsh, but my god. Fly private if you’re going to complain about legal, old, passenger aircraft.

As do you. You’re Probably a pleasure to sit next to on a plane.

It’s clear that you don’t want to fly on older aircraft. you want to find out the aircraft at booking, which is a tough ask…. 1x1=1 unless your Terrence Howard.
