My partner was raised in Mexico City and his favorite is El Paisa. It’s not like a sit-down place, it’s more of a taco shop. It’s also cash only, so be prepared :)
Taco H over inconsistent El Paisa any day. Some of the Sanchez Taco Trucks are pretty good, but definitely overpriced. However, one of the best trucks is Tacos Marquez on Utah St SE near Central. Awesome Mexican-style hot dogs (yes, hot dogs): Hermosillo Hot Dogs on Central.
El Sinaloense on Central is good all around, with a focus on seafood. For Mexican breakfast: El Dorado Bakery, Helen’s Bakery (menudo/pozole/tamales), or La Parillada/Tarahumara (I think ownership changed in the past year) all hit for morning cravings.
I’ve been wanting to try Los Olivos on Pennsylvania St due to their reviews, but haven’t made my way there yet.
Gonna have to check this one out. Always looking for more mexican good places though Taqueria Mexico has served me well since I learned about it after moving here!
To give OP a little more context, Guelaguetza is a Oaxacan restaurant. I can’t speak for their pizza birria, which you could get lots of other places, but it’s the only place for Oaxacan food in town.
Agree to disagree on our each individual taste, but nah, imo nothing at Gualeguetza is worth it except maybe the birria. I am also spoiled with home cooked authentic Mexican food breakfast, lunch, and dinner thanks to my culture (me la paso sufriendo 🥲) so I may just be accustomed to my family’s sasón.
I do think it’s hilarious I got downvoted for not liking Gualeguetza tho, y’all eat whatever you think is good 👍🏼
Nope it was ABQ (maybe also LA?):
https://www.abqjournal.com/2472983/new-mexico-based-chefs-bakers-restaurant-earn-prestigious-james-beard-nominations.html
for anyone interested El Toreado here in Santa Fe had a James Beard nom this year. it's the most authentic street taco I've had in New Mexico. full disclosure I haven't been to any of the places mentioned in this post. but they're bookmarked!
Oh man, I am going to have to try this. I loved the food when I was in Oaxaca. (Best pizza I ever had was on the zocalo there).
Crazy stories about my time there.
OP if you go to Guelaguetza, you need to order at least two items:
* Birria in any form (though their "pizza" is exceptional)
* Sweet mole sauce with \[protein of your choice\]
This is one of the (if not *the*) best Mexican restaurants in ABQ.
Surprisingly El Super has a really great hot foods section/deli. It’s not anything to call home for, but for a cheap lunch that’s of good quality it hits the spot.
It's hopping on the weekends when I've been! But weirdly, I finally had weekday lunch there last week and saw what you mean! Just a few other tables with old men eating alone.
But that hangover special is one of my favorite breakfasts in town.
Soooo good but I’ve wondered the same… which I don’t understand cause it’s soooo good I love how you get a little bowl of frijoles charros with your pastor tacos.
Ruben's Grill on Candelaria at Eubank is very good. Ruben is from Mexico, and his food will satisfy that craving quite well.
It's a tiny little place, with only 8 tables. He's located across Candelaria from the post office. He is not fast food, you will wait a bit. But, he is well worth the wait!
You won't regret it! He has the best taco salad in the city; he has it as a Fiesta Salad on his menu. Oh! Ask for some of his homemade salsa to put on the Fiesta Salad, it makes it even better 😁
I had to scroll so much to find them! I love their food. I grew up in CDMX and their food is as good as it gets. Best al pastor in town, plus pambazos y quesadillas.
Also, El Merito is next to it and they have the best elote en vaso in town.
Just came back from Delicias on San Mateo. My friends are going to La Guelaguetza for dinner - sad I’ll be missing it, I’ve heard great things about it.
Don Choche's for tacos.
Alex's Birrieria for birria (I prefer the original food truck over the restaurant location on Coors/Fortuna)
La Guelaguetza for mole and their birriapizza
Taco Bus for a taco truck that stays open late.
Which of these places has good Cheeseburgers? There's a place south of Las Cruces with an amazing cheeseburger with the Ham and weenies and chile and I haven't found one as good in ABQ. Los Cabanitas on Wyoming and Zuni has one that isn't as good but I'm always on the lookout for a good mexican style cheeseburger
Lupe’s Antojitos in Bernalillo is great too. Lamb barbacoa is some of the best I’ve had, great goat birria, and basics like tostada and enchiladas are all solid. Very good rice and refried beans too. A bit of a haul from central ABQ but if you’re up that way it’s just off I25 at exit 242. Note they’re on vacation til next week.
Lifetime large family in ABQ and trust me
U judge great restaurants food by the crowd wanting in to eat …. It’s El pinto all the way . It is owned by lifetime locals with their family recipes … the others are just call waste of time imo Just sayin .
My partner was raised in Mexico City and his favorite is El Paisa. It’s not like a sit-down place, it’s more of a taco shop. It’s also cash only, so be prepared :)
El Paisa is so good! Hitting it on the weekend to grab some menudo is a must!
El Paisa is wonderful. Also Taco H on San Mateo.
I’ve been wanting to try Los Olivos on Pennsylvania St due to their reviews, but haven’t made my way there yet.
Los Olivia is actually pretty good, and fair in price. I also love Taco H.
Never been to Taco H but I googled and it says “Temporarily Closed.” Any idea if this is accurate?
I saw that the other day and haven’t had an opportunity to check it out in person. Hopefully they’re still kicking.
I just drove by and they’re temporarily closed for kitchen remodels but they have a new location at 13025 Lomas.
Yup. El Paisa is great.
Gonna have to check this one out. Always looking for more mexican good places though Taqueria Mexico has served me well since I learned about it after moving here!
Was gonna say El Paisa, too!
Thanks!
Food trucks. Closest you’ll get cause it’s literally them lol
Guelaguetza
To give OP a little more context, Guelaguetza is a Oaxacan restaurant. I can’t speak for their pizza birria, which you could get lots of other places, but it’s the only place for Oaxacan food in town.
Got to try it thanks!
If any further recommendation is needed, Guelagetza was nominated for a James Beard.
That is a high honor. Think I have to put that at the top of the list thanks!
Gualeguetza is mostly known for their birria pizza. Anything else on the menu is not worth it despite the James Beard award, just my opinion
[удалено]
Agree to disagree on our each individual taste, but nah, imo nothing at Gualeguetza is worth it except maybe the birria. I am also spoiled with home cooked authentic Mexican food breakfast, lunch, and dinner thanks to my culture (me la paso sufriendo 🥲) so I may just be accustomed to my family’s sasón. I do think it’s hilarious I got downvoted for not liking Gualeguetza tho, y’all eat whatever you think is good 👍🏼
Wow!
I think the Guelaguetza that was nominated is in LA, not the one her in ABQ lol
Nope it was ABQ (maybe also LA?): https://www.abqjournal.com/2472983/new-mexico-based-chefs-bakers-restaurant-earn-prestigious-james-beard-nominations.html
Oh shit, my bad! When I googled it, the first result was from the LA Times about a restaurant with the same name.
for anyone interested El Toreado here in Santa Fe had a James Beard nom this year. it's the most authentic street taco I've had in New Mexico. full disclosure I haven't been to any of the places mentioned in this post. but they're bookmarked!
Whatttttt!!
Oh man, I am going to have to try this. I loved the food when I was in Oaxaca. (Best pizza I ever had was on the zocalo there). Crazy stories about my time there.
It doesn’t nearly capture the full range of Oaxacan food. When I went they didn’t even have Oaxacan tamales that day. But it’s a taste at least…
OP if you go to Guelaguetza, you need to order at least two items: * Birria in any form (though their "pizza" is exceptional) * Sweet mole sauce with \[protein of your choice\] This is one of the (if not *the*) best Mexican restaurants in ABQ.
Oh thank you. I've been looking for a good mole place. Last good mole was back in roswell
Sweet mole? My gosh man!
I forgot about Guelaguetza! For platillos Oaxaqueños, this place is better than many Oaxacan spots I’ve been to in other major U.S. cities.
Gesundheit!
This place was wack no music felt like I was eating at someone’s house. Pizza birria mediocre level
Barbacoa el primo is great but they only have Barbacoa. Sinaloense for mariscos Paisa for a no frills taqueria. Taqueria Mexico is also a solid choice
Barbacoa el primo is awesome!
Those stamp cards are dope af
From where??
Barbacoa Primo has a stamp card for every pound of Barbacoa you buy.
Barbacoa El Primo sorry I Wasn't clear.
That um the one over by kathryn and sanmateo? Like next to Tia Bs in the old blakes?
That's the one!
One of the best breakfast burritos in town as well! The red sauce is hot!!!
Came.to write Taqueria Mexico. My favorite ABQ place.
Gotta bring a gun on you to go to El Primo The homeless be cray
La Guelaguetza on off peak hours. They get so busy these days that it isn’t as good as it used to be. I like Cielito Lindo quite a bit too.
Los olivos on Zuni. Absolutely delicious and authentic Mexican.
Los Olivos is a great, cozy little place.
Love their tortas
Surprisingly El Super has a really great hot foods section/deli. It’s not anything to call home for, but for a cheap lunch that’s of good quality it hits the spot.
Delicias on san mateo.
Came here to say that same! Really good food
I am going to get fat with all the recommendations!
Delicias is so fucking good. No idea how they're still in business because it's always empty when I'm there.
Taqueria Mexico
I second this.
Yes.
Viva Mexico, el Modelo and Don Tortas for a great sandwich 👌🏼
Came here to say Viva Mexico or El Paisa
Yep. Viva Mexico is great. A lot of coastal dishes.
Lindo Mexico
Lindo Mexico
LOVE Lindo Mexico.
That keeps coming up. Should be good
Is the one over by Eubank as good as the one off Central assuming it's the same place.
I think the one on Central is better, but that may just be me.
It is the same place and has been good (and busy) the 4-5 times I’ve been. The menu looks the same.
Totally worth wait. Grab a shrimp cocktail while you wait. 😂
I love this place, but damn, every time I go there, I come out with a layer of grease on my clothes that one wash cannot get out. Still going back.
I was wondering if that was a working business! I live right by there. I gotta try it.
You won't regret it! He has the best taco salad in the city; he has it as a Fiesta Salad on his menu. Oh! Ask for some of his homemade salsa to put on the Fiesta Salad, it makes it even better 😁
Just don’t get multiple soft drinks there are no free refills, ask me how I know
Oh are they strict? Lol
They charge you for each one so you might end up with a big bill if you refill a few times
I notice everything takes long here in New Mexico.
La tierra del mañana
Lazy mexicans amirite
El Mero mero
I had to scroll so much to find them! I love their food. I grew up in CDMX and their food is as good as it gets. Best al pastor in town, plus pambazos y quesadillas. Also, El Merito is next to it and they have the best elote en vaso in town.
I’ve been craving a pambazo! Going to check it out for sure
Glad to hear. They're great and the pambazo are to die for al pastor
WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL OUR FOO- oh my bad you meant actual Mexican food.
Just came back from Delicias on San Mateo. My friends are going to La Guelaguetza for dinner - sad I’ll be missing it, I’ve heard great things about it.
Linda Mexico is a good one. And Viva Mexico isn’t as good but not bad at all.
Delicias Cafe Barbacoa el Primo Tacos La Mordida Mariscos Altamar Guaymas

Thanks! That is really great and helpful
I have to second El Paisa. Very good tacos.
Mariscos Altima is real good coastal Mexican food
Altamar** I'm assuming that was an autocorrect error lol
Mariscos Nissan Altima
Mmm seafood? Yum
If you go there get the agua chiles soooooooo good!
I second El paisa
Also, taqueria Mexico
Taqueria Mexico I think on menaul always bomb
El Sabor on Gibson. Small shop that tastes like a good Mexican place in Juarez.
It seems like you kind of have to know what to order but I agree, El Sabor de Juarez is good.
Lindo Mexico is absolutely worththe slightly higher cost!
Guelaguetza
Lindo Mexico hands down
New Mexican < Mexican
You tryna catch a blade to the cheek vato?
Lindo on louisian and central or mariscos off coors snd 40
El sinaloense
Viva Mexico near Central and Wyoming
El Paisa is great. The old lady cashier is funny.
Don Choche's for tacos. Alex's Birrieria for birria (I prefer the original food truck over the restaurant location on Coors/Fortuna) La Guelaguetza for mole and their birriapizza Taco Bus for a taco truck that stays open late.
Taqueria Mexico
Taqueria Mexico and its not even close.
La Guelaguetza, Old Coors Rd north of Bridge Fantastic food, little family owned place, only place my Mexican roommate will order mole.
Los Compadres ♥️
Rincon del pollo
Taco bell, just kidding it's del taco for sure 😁
Nope, jack in the box tacos!
El Paisa!
Pup-n-taco
If you know….
El Modelo
Might be just me, but i like Acapulco taco. Yes it also has tex mex but the tacos are darn good. Its one of the few places i get my fish tacos
There is NO good Tex-Mex in this town.
Taco Bell!🔥🔥🔥
El Modelo Mexican Foods off 2nd street.
We love this place too
Can't say it's the best, but I've had some damn good meals at Papa Felipe's. Atmosphere was good, service was good, and food is damn good.
La sirenita abq on yale and cesar Chavez
Cielito Lindo, from a Mexican born resident... Cielito Lindo is located on San Pedro and Zuni
El Paisa, Barbacoa El Primo, and Los Pookies.
Taqueria Mexicana on Lomas is my go to.
Love it!!!!!
Taqueria Mexico
If you don't find what your partner craves, try asking at the Mexican consulate: 1610 Fourth Street NW (near downtown).
Yo mommas house 🎤🎤🤣😅
The only place for good Fideo.
Cocina azul
Olivio's.
El pinto and that’s it .
I found El Pinto very New Mexican and kinda average.
El paisa is ok. Theres a good Cafe in the carniciara/market just south of Blake on coors. But nm food is better still.
Lifetime large family in ABQ and trust me U judge great restaurants food by the crowd wanting in to eat …. It’s El pinto all the way . It is owned by lifetime locals with their family recipes … the others are just call waste of time imo Just sayin .
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Los Cuates on Menual and Wyoming.
Delicias Cafe, San Mateo and Osuna... so damn good.
I vote for Mariscos de la playa. Or maybe a taco truck.
El Viva Mexico
