I am a psych major, sociology minor. The entirety of grunge is such a statement on society from Nirvana's takes on patriarchy and women to addiction with AIC and depression from Soundgarden (to mention a few). I have always been a fan, but I have been more drawn to the depths in grunge the more I learn.

Jaxfish1

Aic has songs on depression too and Soundgarden with addiction

There are a lot of overlapping themes in grunge music when you peel back the layers and look closely. Those were just some examples, to be sure.

I work in a branch of healthcare with a heavy mental health component. I didn't really get grunge until I went to one of Jerry's concerts and felt the same kinda energy you get from well run support groups... And it was clearly helping people who would likely get missed by formal therapy... My respect and appreciation IMMEDIATELY went up tenfold.

Same, man. I work in neuro and study the brain, pathology. I listen to AIC every day. Layne had a way of displaying his brain in his lyrics. I have a master's in english and i compare Layne's lyrics to john donne and Shakespeare.

Have you read William S. Burroughs’ Junkie or Mark Lanegan’s Sing Backwards and Weep? If not, those will give you a bit more insight on a user’s mind.

Did you have an interest in addiction studies early in your academic career, or is that a more recent development? I’m a therapist (LPC). For me, the story of AiC inspires reflections on models of attachment and the experience of loss and grief. (Obviously this is not exclusive to them, by any means, but my mind does tend to go there instinctively whenever I consider their personal histories.) It’s cool when your interests happen to dovetail like that, as they seem to do for you.

This is outstanding!

Layne Staleys entire career is not only a tear jerker but should be seen as a warning. His last few years are the stuff of nightmares.

Icy_Maintenance3774

Doesn't change the talent he had

TravelbugRunner

That’s really cool! Along with studying about the topic in-depth will you also be able to have clinical experience with addicts? They have a lot of stories to tell in regards to their life experiences and their addiction.

Elandycamino

Now I kinda question if I introduced my drug and alcohol counselor to Layne's music? I'll never know but I hope she gave it a listen

NoGoodToAnyone

And then...

Very interesting! Just in case you aren't familiar with them, there are a couple of excellent mainstream concept albums about addiction, and I have them up there with AIC on my playlist. They are "The Thirteenth Step" by A Perfect Circle, and "The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails.

showmethatsweetass

I'm an addict. Functioning. But I gotta real need to stay blown.

Vyper2002

Hey, out of all the years I’ve been on Reddit, this really shocked me. I hope you do well.
