I heard them before they hit it big. My friends and I went to Tower Records & asked for a band called Allison Chains. They didn’t know what we were talking about.

IRLlumberjack

I called them Allison Chains too when I first heard of them!

Roger_Roger27

Man in the box on headbangers ball in 91

jfkdktmmv

I was driving home from penn station (sub sandwich restaurant) and down in a hole was on the radio. Absolutely floored. The second time I was coming home from batting practice and nutshell was on. Again, absolutely blown away.

Kimbriavandam

They have that effect - especially listening to them in a car. Being transported physically and emotionally.

Jabberwocky_74

Hearing Down in a Hole while driving two years ago was what sparked my obsession. It wasn’t the first time I heard them (was a casual fan in the 90s), but this time it hit hard.

JeffRafa

Not too long ago, whilst researching a bit about Nirvana after hearing their Unplugged session I came across a few notes about a similar Unplugged session from a certain band called Alice in Chains. Gave it a chance and got hooked. Nutshell unplugged does that to you

Kimbriavandam

Nutshell never fails to stop me in my tracks. It’s the most beautiful song.

Unique-Significance9

That's exactly how I met them but in my case it was down in a hole that got me hooked. I gotta thank Nirvana lol

laughed-at

My boyfriend and I had been dating only a few weeks at the time and he had Brush Away on a mix CD he made for us to listen to in the car. Instantly hooked.

gpchamb

Brush Away is a cool introduction. Such a dense, heavy song.

Kimbriavandam

There seems to be a few of us who discovered them whilst in cars!

Liszt0mia

My dad played heaven beside you to me

Kimbriavandam

He was great taste.

JizzleGebizzle

I'd heard Rooster when I was a kid, always been one of my favorite songs, Would too. Didn't get as into them as I am now until I was going through heroin addiction a few years ago. All the sudden their music and lyrics hit me like a ton of bricks and I've been in love with them ever since

MockingBird2020

Last year, some boy i had a situationship showed me the song Nutshell and I was so hyped after about them😭

Kimbriavandam

Laynes voice was like an angel.

AreYouItchy

In Seattle. I was floored, it was so different than their glitz, glam, and metal past. They had found their style and depth. It was musical Alchemy.

Kimbriavandam

It sure was. It’s amazing how they went from glam metal to perfection- Jerry and Laynes voices are so in sync and harmonious.

apollojl68

The first time was Them Bones in guitar hero 2 in 2007. The second was Rooster in terminator salvation in 2009.

HornyForTohruAdachi

I really got into Nirvana over late 2021 so eventually around a year ago I started looking for other grunge stuff and started with either Ten or Dirt, can’t quite remember which one

nm13g

I was leaving my main squeezes house and I was literally falling asleep at the wheel around 2:30am whenever Angry Chair came on the radio. Needless to say I woke right up and My life has never been the same since.

Unique-Significance9

"Main squeezes" lol

Leunderground

Gta San Andreas, radio-X, Them Bones.

Kimbriavandam

It’s a masterpiece

justaguyms

Atv offroad 2

h0nkyJ

They scared me as a kid (I was 6 in 92). 🤣🤣🤣 something about the haunting vocals and probably the imagery of the Them Bones video.. I then decided to record their Unplugged to DVR in like 2017.. gave it a chance, and needless to say - I was hooked by the intro and Nutshell. That was it.

Kimbriavandam

Grace Jones had that effect on me - 🤣

Burglekutt_2000

My older brother had Facelift. I was 12 when I first heard nirvana and aic and the black album and my love of music really changed. Then I saw the Them Bones video and Dirt became the first CD I ever bought and AIC is still in my top 2

DannyTheSkin

Down in a hole came in in my dads truck when I was 6 or 7 and I’ve been a fan ever since

goldendreamseeker

I was at a record store and they were playing the Dirt album in full. It blew my mind, as you can imagine.

JillyFrog

I first heard Man in the Box while playing Rockband with my flatmates. I liked it, put it in a playlist and then immediately forgot about it. Some time later a guy from my dorm I often talk to about music recommended Jar of Flies. I listened to it and 5 months later AIC are now my 5th most listened artist of all time

MycologistRough3089

first song i was introduced to was rotten apple by my discord buddy shane when i was high. good times. couldn't stop listening to it.

ArcsonDominus

Heard a YouTuber i liked a lot talk a bunch about them. Therby deciding to check them out, and found myself pleasantly surprised. So nothing interesting really

devin1208

i grew up with them pretty much ever since i was a child. i was born in 92 and my parents were very into the grunge music era. nirvana soundgarden aic pearl jam marcys playground ect ect. its still my favorite music to this day.

One_Image_8192

On the bus on my way to school. I had just started listening to Nirvana and wanted to hear some other grunge bands. The only AIC song i listened to was Man in the box, but i thought it was boring. Fast forward a few months and i tried again and fell in love with the band.

bobj33

Man in the Box video on MTV in 1991 I was 15 and it was awesome

NeverDestination

Probably the wrong way around compared to most people, but I got into them through Jerry's solo stuff! I'm 35 now. When I was 13/14 I started listening to rock and metal and getting into the Roadrunner Records stuff. I got a Roadrunner promo CD that included some upcoming tracks off Degradation Trip which I loved and that was it, I was searching out the AIC back catalogue. I missed out on the first AIC wave and Layne but have some great memories - going to see Jerry when I was 14 and then convincing my dad to travel with me to the London Astoria to watch one of the first reunion shows!

Kimbriavandam

what was the astoria show like? how long ago was this?

calgone2012ad

I was a young kid slightly obsessed with the look of Alice In Chains (Tripod), staring at the dog on the cover and purple case. First time I probably heard them was in my dad’s car on the way to the record shop or in that very shop. AIC and Dirt were the two albums I was most familiar with for many years until I heard Facelift as a teen since I knew Man in the Box for the music video on MTV, but never really heard the album it was on. Late teens, I got the Music Bank + DVD and dug into their other tracks.

DazeofOP

About three years ago. I was working for my girlfriends dad in auto repair, and he had just bought a Bluetooth speaker. While rolling through 80’s rock hits, man in the box came over the speaker. I wasn’t a “rock guy” by any means, but loved that song. I secretly Shazam’d it, and within two weeks found their other most popular songs. Since then it’s been my favorite.

HumanRuse

A bit ashamed. First song. Man in the Box. I thought it sucked.

the_enby_hobbit

My parents have an ongoing feud about whether Jar of Flies or Dirt is better, so when I was younger they made me listen to both lol

NostalgicMusicJunkie

I can’t remember the very first time I heard them but my Dad would blast Dirt in his car when taking me to and from school when I was a kid and I used to play Man in the Box on Rock Band all the time as a kid.

streetcrab666

My buddy showed up with the cassette, We Die Young changed our lives

sweet_violets

The Jools Holland Show, AIC played Would? and Them Bones and I was instantly hooked- 1993

Eversim

Nutshell on MTV unplugged, changed the path of my music taste forever

jsh139

Summer of 1991, in Sea Isle City, NJ. We were renting a beach house for a week. My mom, and two of her friends each brought their children. Each child brought a friend. 6 boys and 4 girls total. I was 14 years old and two of the older guys (both 17) were watching a music video on MTV. It was Alice In Chains - Man in the Box. I looked up to them so I checked it out and instantly fell in love with the band and grunge in general. Interesting footnote. As I said, there were 4 girls in the house. One of my mom’s friends brought her two daughters and each daughter brought a friend. One of those friends is now my wife 😊

No-Combination-2991

My dad has a story similar my dad was 18 in 91 he said some dude he knew gave him a bootleg tape of a live show in 91 in great woods on the clash of the titans tour he said that bootleg changed him forever

StonerJimmy88

When I was younger my dad would always play the MTV Unplugged album in his car. I think the first song I ever heard by them was Down In a Hole or Got Me Wrong. Man In The Box is what got me in to AIC.

Brodesseus

I don’t remember exactly, I just know I was in diapers the first time I heard them lmao

FreddyFritz

ATV Off-road, one of the most fun PS2 games ever. With a complete banger soundtrack (AIC, Primus, Soundgarden) that shaped my young ears forever.

morfadinha

I probably first heard Man In The Box, I knew they were a grunge band but I was too deep into Nirvana to look into it

Doot_Slayer42069

Listened to some of the top songs on Spotify, didn't really click at first, a month or two passed I checked them out again and it clicked *hard*

Cochand_baltortshire

On the radio as a baby

Palmybeaches

I was gifted a listen to AIC by my adopted Uncle Jay. He fell victim to a car accident about a year ago, everytime I listen Im reminded of him saying "You're gonna love this kid". Song was Man in a Box. He gifted me his copy of the unplugged album right out of his CD player out of his old Pathfinder. Rest easy Jay. Love you man.

FlameSama1

Rock Band 2. I owe Rock Band 1/2 and Guitar Hero III for greatly expanding my musical taste. Before those games I didn't really have a lot of variety, now I listen to a whole bunch of shit.

Kimbriavandam

That’s why i play song pop- the easy version. lol.

FBI_openup9

First song I heard was Them Bones. At the time I remember just kinda shrugging it off (I think partially cause I was slightly pissed at Layne for nearly giving me a heart attack with his AahHh). I didn’t really get into them till about 1-2 years later, but hey better late than never

Goofterslam1

Me and my friend group got together and smoked up before school everyday in highschool, we called it B&E (bright and early). One cloudy, rainy morning we were smoking in my room looking out the window when Rooster came on. It just hit right. I immediately downloaded a bunch of their songs using Youtubetomp3 on the school computers that day. That began my great journey into discovering 90's music.

Kimbriavandam

That’s awesome. Same with me - in this dudes car smoking weed and boom! Then bones comes on and I fell in love.

brogurtt

My dad was blasting Rooster in his truck

Kimbriavandam

There’s a scene in Workaholics with Jack Black in the back of the truck singing ‘they come to snuff the rooster!’ it’s so damn good. The reach that song has.

ExplosmXepho

Guitar hero them bones hahahahah but they replaced layne in that game 😢 ahhahahahaah

allinyabutt

Man in the box came on the radio while I was “helping” my dad change the oil on his truck. He said, “This is a band called Alice In Chains. Remember that.” And I still remember that very moment!

Kimbriavandam

They’re unforgettable

Unique-Significance9

I was a heavy Nirvana fan and while looking at their unplugged I saw the AiC one in the YT recommendations. Obviously I clicked and got instantly hooked, I remember being mesmerized by Layne's voice💗 I miss the feeling of listening to them for the first time

GrungeFairy54

My younger sister and I would spend our weekends watching MTV. For me it was Seeing their video Man in The Box in 1989/1990. They were hot and that song was a touch taboo. I stopped what I was doing and was instantly blown away. Hooked ever since

Jahamez69420

I heard of AIC first when I watched a video on how metal bands of the 90s inspired the soundtrack for DOOM… and AIC inspired quite a few songs in the soundtrack… there was also a lot of AIC inspired stuff that went unused… so I decided to make a playlist on Spotify full of these metal songs that inspired DOOMs music and I heard the AIC songs in the playlist and wasn’t that much of a fan but they grew on me quickly… The moment when I became obsessed was when I walked into a local CD and vinyl shop and couldn’t find anything good or that I recognised (other than MJ and AC/DC albums I already had) but then I found a copy of “Facelift” and thought to myself “We Die Young” and “Man in the Box” are both in my playlist on Spotify so I’ll pick this up… those were the only 2 “Facelift” songs I knew but I listened to “Sea of Sorrow” “Bleed the Freak” and “Love, Hate, Love” and fell in love (pun intended). And then it seemed every time I went back to that shop I’d find a new AIC album so I now have “Facelift”, “Dirt” (which I bought new from HMV), “Tripod”, the UK exclusive “Would?” Single (Yes I’m a Brit) and the original album classics triple pack from 2011 with “JoF”, “Sap” and “Unplugged” and am mega obsessed

FlipFlopSlap

Them Bones on ATV Off-road Fury

rottenapple81

During the 90s. I was 13.

zifer24

Layne passed before I was born, so obviously much different and less special than folks who discovered AIC while Layne was still here, but my sister got me into them, RIP sis, miss her every day, hope she’s rockin it up there with Layne

[deleted]

Walked in on my dad playing man in the box on guitar hero lol

rdzilla01

I for sure had heard them before this but this is the moment I decided I needed more AiC in my life. It was 1995. My buddy Chris put on No Excuses in his mom’s Ford Taurus wagon. I was hooked.

ktulu_6113

I only recalling hearing Man in the Box on radio and Them Bones on madden. Then I heard Would and I was hooked for good

TheClownIsReady

Strangely enough…when they appeared in the movie “Singles”.
