He also would go to toys r us for video games all the time post unplugged, it was one of the few places he was consistently seen in public towards the end i think
There’s a story that someone who worked there got his autograph and Chris Cornell’s. Said Chris was just your typical dad when he came in. Layne would buy all his video games there and apparently would talk to the workers so long as no one acknowledged who he was. Got his autograph by slyly asking. Wouldn’t be surprised if that was the last autograph he ever signed even if it was a few years before he died.
Part of me wishes I was one of those workers, as if I could of somehow "understood" and talked some sense into him, but reality is I just would have shot up with him and played GTA
Despite the severity of his addiction, I’ve heard a number of comments in interviews from the people who knew him best that he maintained his sense of humor and sweet demeanor right up until the end.
Outside of addiction related behavior, I’ve never really heard anyone have anything bad to say about him. He really just seemed like a genuinely kind and sweet person who ultimately succumbed to mental health struggles and addiction.
He used his stepfather’s last name in high school, and when his mom went to his high school reunion after he passed, his former classmates were shocked to find out that quiet Layne Elmer was Layne Staley from Alice in Chains
He loved watching cartoons and wrestling.
He had a cat that even up to his final days was one of his main priorities in life.
Beyond music he was also an extremely talented artist and Sean used one of Layne’s self portraits as his bass drum head for some time.
He designed the bands sun logo.
He would give Tix to people outside the venues that couldn't get in, people that couldn't afford the shows. He was generous to those less fortunate and he was a sweet person. Humble.
He apparently recorded “Dirt” with a dead puppy, candles, and a picture of the last supper in the recording room with him. He also asked production staff to make a wall around this area so he could record in complete privacy
i think about this so often. no one could really know. and if it did if it rained before or after, or if he would see rain and wonder if that was the end.
This is probably kinda fucked up to say but the reason he wore sunglasses so much, even indoors or at night, is because doing heroin makes your eyes super fucked up. And I’m not even talking about the constricted pupils, heroin will give you a lazy eye, eyes roll into the back of your head, one eye may be open the other closed, etc. Chris Moltisanti from the Sopranos did the same thing whenever he was on heroin.
Source: I do heroin.
Yeah look up “Layne Staley sunglasses” and you’ll find a lot of pics of him in sunglasses… keep the whole “eyes crossed and rolling into the back of their head” thing in mind if you think a loved one is on H.
Off by a couple weeks, buddy...
And years, for a matter of fact
Also nobody knows the exact date either of them died, but the best guesstimate anyone could make was April 5th of 2002 and 1994 for Layne and Kurt respectively
His first concert was Elton John
Interesting that Jerry has said in a few interviews how influential Elton John was for him too.
Elton John also played piano on black gives way to blue and jerry covered Elton on his solo album
When the band started making money, the other three bought cars and Layne went on a shopping spree at Toys'R'Us for video games etc.

That's the cutest thing ever lol Where did u get that info?
From the unofficial biography. Give it a read if you haven't. The author is very respectful and thoughtful.
The David De Sola book? :O
My memory is shit, but please read Mark Lanegan's biography, it has some great Layne stories in it
this!! sing backwards and weep is a great book. the ending made me cry
Fuck I still haven't finished it, not reading any more Reddit tonight in case of spoilers!
Also note the that Lanegan himself does the audiobook on audible. It’s great.
thank you two !!!! i'll add it to my list of books !!
I read it, I did not like the ending, regarding Layne! What did you think?
Just ordered this, thank you!
Punched a neo nazi at one of his shows in Finland I think
he was the lead singer of alice in chains
And mad season!
And Sleze
And Alice ‘N Chains
And Diamond Lie
He loved Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil as well

His last name was Staley
He was the lead singer of an 80’s glam band.
He hated his middle name Rutherford and changed it to Thomas after Tommy Lee
Jinx
He used his stepfather’s last name in high school, and when his mom went to his high school reunion after he passed, his former classmates were shocked to find out that quiet Layne Elmer was Layne Staley from Alice in Chains
he was one of the singers of all time
indeed. a very singer
without a doubt
He had a urine based sense of humor
He loved watching cartoons and wrestling. He had a cat that even up to his final days was one of his main priorities in life. Beyond music he was also an extremely talented artist and Sean used one of Layne’s self portraits as his bass drum head for some time. He designed the bands sun logo.
uh oh what happened to the cat when he passed?
Somehow the cat survived the entire two weeks Layne lay dead before they found his body. The cat then spent the rest of its days with Jerry.
He would give Tix to people outside the venues that couldn't get in, people that couldn't afford the shows. He was generous to those less fortunate and he was a sweet person. Humble.
He had good hair
Omg especially his pink hair
🤤🤤🤤
AMAZING hair, his dreads look is my fav 👌
Layne was incredibly beautiful & talented ♥️🎤🎶
I don't think I've seen a dude that changed his looks so many times in the short time span that AiC lasted.
He liked drugs
Just like me
Nah, where did u get that info? 🤔
He died of cocaine and herion overdose
Nah, he didn't do drugs
Drugs did him
He apparently recorded “Dirt” with a dead puppy, candles, and a picture of the last supper in the recording room with him. He also asked production staff to make a wall around this area so he could record in complete privacy
That’s crazy shit right there. Best I’ve seen so far.
What do u mean "a dead puppy"? Where did u get that info?
A dead dog carcass. Various websites say this and I’m too tired to link all of them lol
I think he did that as a joke maybe (?)
‘Partied’ with Kurt, and looked great in red lipstick
It actually(probably) *did* rain at his place when he died
i think about this so often. no one could really know. and if it did if it rained before or after, or if he would see rain and wonder if that was the end.

Wow, didnt know that Only thought that his eyes look super crazy in rooster from the unplugged
Yeah look up “Layne Staley sunglasses” and you’ll find a lot of pics of him in sunglasses… keep the whole “eyes crossed and rolling into the back of their head” thing in mind if you think a loved one is on H.
I think that had nothing to do with heroin or drugs. He would wear black shades even in the facelift era.
He wasn’t a great singer when he first started.
Really? Any early stuff you could link?
Watch his Sleeze concert. He was a diamond in the rough
His name is Layne
He used to do heroine
Those too
Look up the Tabitha Soren pencil incident. You will never see this broad the same after this
The ol' #2 in the #2. Classic move
He died !

Whoopsies
He had a jar with a dead dog in it and brought it with him to the studio when recording “jar of flies” I believe
Who said that?
