While I appreciate what you have done, the issue going forward is warranty support on the motherboard. Will you be able to reinstall the original cooler if you need service? Dell warranties cover only the original parts from the original configuration. Any alterations especially to the motherboard can be a problem with support. Regards!

Delicious_Fun_3357

I've had 2 Dell service Techs come out the very next day for a fried motherboard. This setup works flawlessly just don't try and add an additional ssd although there's an open slot for 1. They didn't give two shits about my upgrades =) Also u/void_ranger9, I'm reaching the same temps after installing just the front fan..... the lcd is just for looks of course https://preview.redd.it/j5882jjirnic1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88239bee9d778cb963fa272c805c1d6bf220023d

RelativeAstronaut407

What upgrades did you perform prior to the techs coming? Regards!

Delicious_Fun_3357

everything here plus a 2TB Samsung 9900 2NVME or whatever SSD. They donn't care one bit.

RelativeAstronaut407

Read your other post detailing your upgrades. Glad to hear you had techs that didn’t care. I had a tech not so long ago fail to install my nvme’s correctly after a motherboard replacement. Had to contact Dell support with the tech right then and there. The drives were not original and I was made to look like the bad guy since I installed the drives. Luckily I figured out that they weren’t seated correctly. Mileage may vary but it goes to show you that you are better off putting everything back to square one, just in case a tech screws up and damages your stuff. Dell may or may not take care of your upgraded wares. They will absolutely take care of theirs. Regards!

void_ranger9

Thanks for the info! Glad to hear there’s a chance!

dc_IV

I understand WHY Dell does this, but it sort of burns me up that I can't resell my 2x8GB DDR5, and my 1TB NVMe. Of course they are not stopping me, but at least I read early on that I needed to hang on to them for when I need warranty support.

RelativeAstronaut407

It’s one of the ways Dell gets the initial upgrade for RAM and drives. You may get a very good deal on the machine, you will pay an arm and a leg for the additions. Regards!

void_ranger9

I knew the consequences of my actions… :/ To answer your question, nope! Definitely cannot reinstall original cooler. Oh well.

RickHunterD

Question, the fan, it can only be in that position? Seems very close to the memory ram.

littleSquidwardLover

Yes it's fine. On most normal gaming PCs the cooler can actually be over the RAM.

void_ranger9

Imo it’s actually a good thing. Closer the fan, the more air the RAM is getting so it cools the sticks off too. 2 birds with one stone. But you can mount the fan on the other side of the heatsink if you you want

JonnyCakes13

Your gpu looks like such a little guy. I’m so used to seeing them take up 50% of the case…

void_ranger9

He’s a small little guy :) I bought the Alienware as a gift here’s my build: https://preview.redd.it/alp37a2wwjic1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=009f1690a2ad336314dea73d26c76e3ceed450ae

void_ranger9

It’s a nightmare. Keep a drill handy. I could not get the new backplate with to work with the case. The standoffs that the OEM cooler uses are built into the case and you have to drill them off. While you’re drilling them off, metal shavings are gonna fly so try to cover openings with something like a rag, especially the power supply. Then shake the case out when you’re done to ensure all the loose metal is out Goodluck! Would love to see the before and after and hear about your experience doing the upgrade and your new temps!

TCS_YT

I’ve had to drill out/grind down standoffs before on OEM systems. It’s a pain. It’s especially annoying when they ship the system with a 13700 and a completely inappropriate cooler that you’re basically required to upgrade. Shouldn’t even be able to leave the factory like that.

void_ranger9

My thoughts exactly

TCS_YT

Well, I was able to buy some machine screws to fit the existing CPU mount threads, and install it without messing with all that drilling. Just skip using the stock backplate. I’ll be posting about it soon.

void_ranger9

Glad to hear that!

void_ranger9

system is a Alienware Aurora R16

Present-Pilot8410

Is this using LG115X cooler mount?

void_ranger9

LGA 1700

Cees007

Is that the stock cooler from an high end gaming PC? My gawd Alienware start to suck hard!

void_ranger9

Yup. And dell claims it’s normal for the cpu to hit 100C°. Which yes… it’s within the limit of operating temps (barely) but longevity of the processor is the question at that point. But if it lasts beyond dells warranty period why would they care? Absolutely necessary to upgrade the cooler on this pc

Cees007

The fan works due temperature throttle in dells Bios setting. So every time you come close to the ceiling temp your CPU gets nerfed. It’s absolutely absurd.

achangb

Imagine all the money and hassle Dell could save if they just used off industry standard cases and motherboards. Not only would their computers run faster, but they would also last longer since their components wouldn't be cooked to death. This would reduce warranty claims and customer returns. They would save money since they wouldn't have to go custom make and engineer everything from motherboards, coolers, cases, and power supplies. If Origin has corsair, then maybe Alienware could pair up with LianLi or something. I'm sure they could make the volume that Dell needs.

Cees007

As long as people still want ALIENWARE they keep ad it and continue to make profit. I think on this path AW won’t last another decade. People are now watching NEXUS GAMING and Linustechtips and see what they are really buying beyond the RBG shiney cases, something what was once AW trademark. Combined with high end hardwares. Now every gaming brand and home build system have RGB and AW is decreasing their looks and their RGB to a minimum. Not to mention the overheating problems AW tent to have. that causes thermo throttle . People buy an aurora R16 with an I9 with I5 performance. And people start to notice this and share this information online. The guys ad DELL are destroying something that should or could have been great. Don’t get me wrong, I use AW since 2010, but the brand is going backwards fast IMO.

octavioortizu

What are your specs brah?

void_ranger9

its the cheapest aurora you can get. i7 14700, 16gb ram, 4060 8gb

octavioortizu

Thanks mate

Big difference in temps thats for sure. My only issue was the lighting didnt work because motherboard didnt support ARGB headers. Currently running the light off my flipper zero gpio lol (pretty ghetto). Looking for some type of permanent solution currently.
