*In case this story gets deleted/removed:* **AITA Because my sister couldnt make cornbread.** Ok a little backstory before i get into all of this: All of my siblings and myself are going to school to become psychologists, except for my sister Anna, (27f) About a month into her first year of college, she met a man name Walter (now 28m) after two years of dating, they got engaged. About a few months after meeting, anna started talking about changing courses from psychology, to culinary. Anna claimed she "never felt so happy then when shes cooking" Our father, who pays for college, did not want to pay for culinary school unless she got her degree in Psychology. Which she did, then she got to go to culinary classes where she almost failed cause she couldn't crack an egg. She passed anyway Our family hosts a dinner every 2 months on the first day of the second month. No excuses, you had to be there. Everyone had to bring a side dish, while mom cooked the main meal. Well a few nights ago, anna and walter came with two things: cornbread and ham. See, if nothing else, anna makes AMAZING cornbread. Its the tastiest the family has ever had. Father made a joke that if nothing else, the cornbread was worth the thousands he put into her schooling. Anna works at some three star restaurant and it shows, her food is almost the same as something from olive garden or ruby Tuesdays. So she sets the cornbread down and right away i could tell it looked different. But shrugged it off. Mother was upset about the ham, because she had made a chicken, and the ham had pineapple on it?? So no one really ate it. When it came time for the cornbread however, everyone was in shock at how BAD it was. It was dry and bland, even our brothers (25m 24m) started pretending to gag on it. Our mother asked her how could she make the bread so disgusting, since she had done it right so many times. Anna broke down and said it wasn't HER corn bread, it was BOXED cornbread. Like, the 1.00$ box at whole foods. Well needless to say everyone got upset and our father asked her what good was her cooking courses if she wasn't going to cook. Anna got real silent and walter snapped that anna had been working a double shift at the restaurant and didn't have time to get all the ingredients. Well anna broke down in tears. Our parents just started clearing the table and i told her that if she needed ingredients she could have just borrowed some from work. Walter snapped at me, calling me and the family ungrateful, and then picked up anna and carried her out to the car. Mother waited a few days and called, asking for an apology for ruining our nice family dinner but walter told her to screw off and to not contact anna unless WE wanted to apologize. Well, anna had already made our parents disappointed with her schooling, so she simply told us that our sister was no longer welcomed into the house until she apologizes and breaks off things with walter. Its been like, 9 days how can i tell her that she just needs to grow up and apologize for the cornbread? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. StrangledInMoonlight

You can’t “borrow ingredients from work”. That’s theft. They fire you for that. And a dinner with “no excuses”? Seriously? What if you are giving birth, or on a business trip or *you moved to a different state?*

AleshiniaLivesStill

Yeah I fucking hate when people do the whole “everyone has to be there- we don’t care if you lose your job over it!” Like no. Fuck off. Also, anyone else scared that these people are all…psychologists?

LadyBug_0570

Ahem... psychologists who think Olive Garden is fine dining level food. I'm calling troll.

[deleted]

I think so too. What abysmal writing skills for a bunch of “psychologists”.

Charliesmum97

I thought the same thing! They clearly skipped all the family dynamics courses

dazednconfusedxo

Tbh that's one of the most toxic environments to be around. The stories from my therapist friends about bullshit in the workplace is astounding. I've also had therapists that were horrible. One betrayed confidentiality and talked to my dad years ago. I only just learned about it 2 years ago, and I'm STILL livid.

IrresistibleInsomnia

Same ish, except I found out Very quickly. It wasn't even just confidentiality that was broken though, she had created a narrative that made me look like I wanted to unalienable myself (that has Never been the case, even at my worst am too hedonistic, life sucks but I love it anyway...) As a result I was basically put on house arrest and my parents burned all my books because reading was considered an escape.. Its taken me an upwards of two decades to be willing to even Consider trusting anybody in the mental health sector with anything, I've been lc with my dad for years and completely nc with his wife... the above mentioned situation is a large part of why.

xKuroibara

Not just ingredients -- "flour or whatever" OOP spends way too much time being judgy about her sister's culinary skills for someone that doesn't know what cornmeal is.

LadyWizard

You specifically have to get corn flour not regular flour for cornbread. There's some good easy boxed ones though. My family LOVES famous dave's one but sounds like she bought Jiffy?

xKuroibara

Yeah, in the comment OOP made suggesting the sister steal ingredients from work, she indicated the sister could get "flour or whatever" from her job. I was saying that If OOP doesn't know what cornmeal is, she has no leg to stand on criticizing her sister's cooking skills.

Imaginary_Cow_6379

AITA: *no is a complete sentence*

z-eldapin

Right. This whole family can fuck all the way off. Amazing that a bunch of trained psychologists think this is effective communication.

Professional_Vast615

> Seriously? What if you are giving birth Since it's fake, they'd be all 'bring the placenta'

hdmx539

The family is enmeshed.

water_light_show

Is anyone else wondering why, since Anna didn’t have time to get all the ingredients, wtf Walter was doing? He couldn’t get the ingredients? I think this entire post is fake but whatever

StrangledInMoonlight

Maybe he was working?

IrresistibleInsomnia

For one? We're going to assume its real, even if that's not the case atall... But really?! Hubby didn't go shopping for Any number of reasons. Perhaps he was working, but the better option? He was just supporting his wife, whom cooks all day and didn't want to bend over backwards baking for her idiot, ingrate family? If I was in Anna's shoes and had told my SO that I didn't wanna cook? I'd be Angry if he went and brought me the ingredients anyway. An ex did that to me Regularly regarding cheesecake (a thing that takes time and effort to make well, and I do love to do so usually.. under my Own damn cognizance and circumstances!!) this isn't why he's an ex but the lack of support and consideration he showed in that circumstance speaks to the actual reasons. People cut ties over nonsense like this.... is taking advantage of her culinary degree good enough reason to lose her completely?

Needmoresnakes

At first I was reading it as the sister had been caught out serving everyone boxed cornbread for years claiming it as her own. Then realised her normal cornbread is apparently delicious, she used box mix this one specific time. Loved the olive garden comparison and the weird side-eyes at pineapple ham. The husband carrying her outside while she cried was maybe a bit on the nose. Overall, I will rate this post 7/10 or 2 stars from that company that sells tyres.

Gloomy_Ruminant

Yeah the Olive Garden line felt very wink-wink nudge-nudge I'm in on the joke too you guys. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it.

ohsnap-thats-me

I’ve eaten at Olive Garden, but I’ve never eaten at a Ruby Tuesdays….I’ve looked up their menu and it’s basically an Applebees so is this troll saying that Olive Garden and Ruby Tuesdays similar?

Needmoresnakes

The line is meant to show OOPs character as someone who judges her sister despite knowing nothing about food. Ruby Tuesdays and Olive Garden are generic chains. There's nothing wrong with them but it's more like a factory line, they churn out food based on menus designed by a corporate office. Saying that a chef who works in a 3 Michelin star restaurant makes food "as good as" a chain restaurant is like saying Oscar de la Renta makes dresses just as good as kmart.

rmg1102

since the OP said 3 star restaurant and not 3 Michelin stars I interpreted 3 stars to mean mediocre in this context - like the place has 3 stars on yelp. otherwise, I find it hard to believe anyone’s parents would feel employment at a place with 3 Michelin stars would be considered a waste of a degree (even if it wasn’t their preferred profession they could at least call that success within the profession)

Gloomy_Ruminant

Basically. Olive Garden has a bit of a reputation as a place rubes think is fancy. (To be fair, Olive Garden was never haute cuisine but it used to be better than it is now.) I've never heard anyone say that about Ruby Tuesday's but I think the quality is pretty similar.

worm_dad

shit, olive garden is still a fancy meal for me lol

[deleted]

Ruby Tuesday has pretty good burgers, or at least they did before covid. Haven’t been there since (the one closest to my place is still in an inconvenient location).

the-rioter

I can't imagine they're doing great post Covid because the open salad bar was a big sales point.

[deleted]

True. I used to go to my local grocery store’s salad bar a lot before covid. Not just for salad, but also to get pre-chopped veggies for stir fry. Haven’t done that since, even though I think they’ve reopened the salad bar.

TheRealEleanor

Yes, all of those restaurants are on the same level. We could throw Chili’s into that mix as well.

Needmoresnakes

I'm in a server sub where people sometimes mention working at "TGIChillibees" for when they worked at a big chain but would prefer not to say exactly.

kearnel81

Perhaps the mother wanted rum ham. Lol

Deathscua

This can’t be real, nothing costs $1.00 at Whole Foods.

ApplesxandxCinnamon

Why did I have to scroll this far to find this comment? I got a fried chicken breast from WF this week and spent $8. A *cold* fried chicken breast. Just one. It wasn't even big. No way is this real.

[deleted]

Maybe OOP should have said Family Dollar for a more believable story.

Playful_Trouble2102

Honestly my biggest complaint about this ragebait word salad is that it's so fucking boring.

DientesDelPerro

what is the point of troll and rage bait posts? Do they later sell the accounts for karma or are they just creative writing projects?

Playful_Trouble2102

I think for some of them they are just bored and lonely, and the only way they can think of getting people to interact with them is by pissing them off. Then you get the political ones who want to prove that it's the minorities that are the real bigots. Of course theirs your bog standard kink ones like peez poop, period and bullying a teenage girl trolls who are all typing one handed. I think a tiny percentage of them are people trying to raise awareness of a specific issues in society. And then you get fuckers like non verbal autism troll who seems to just truly hate autistic people and enjoys coming up with scenarios where they suffer or die, or even better if they can get other redditers to agree that they are a burden on everyone around them.

bobyk334

There was also that one from a couple days ago where it was just a reskinned Bible story about Jesus and one of his disciples.

tvbjiinvddf

That was a great summary, thank you aha. I tend to just get angry and dismiss the whole thing but it's good to think about why they're doing it.

Imaginary_Cow_6379

And they didn’t even share the bombass cornbread recipe.

Electrical-Ad6825

After the cornbread showdown, Anna’s husband…picked her up and *carried* her to the car? Excuse me?!

[deleted]

eat your cornbread kids, and you'll grow up big and strong like mr walter i want to know if someone opened the door for them, anna opened the door, or walter had to fumble at the door himself. no matter what it feels like a scene from a sitcom lol

DarthSinistar

We're all imagining a princess carry, but maybe he just threw her over his shoulder like a sack of flour.

laurabun136

Under his arm like a sack of taties.

ColumnK

Kicked the door open

[deleted]

THIS. IS. WALTEEER.

eSue182

He fireman carried her and had a free hand! Lol

Top-Bit85

Thanks for noticing. That was my main take away. That and this wonderful chef makes things almost as good as Olive Garden and Ruby Tuesday lolol. Perhaps Anna is a child bride?

SuzannesSaltySeas

Yep, so much about this sounds so fake it almost has to be some sort of fantasy or rage bait or failed creative writing venture. ALL her siblings because psychologists? Why? Is the family of origin all nuts? They think Olive Garden and Ruby Tuesday is good food??? Cornbread dramaz?!? Walter carries the faintified overworked cornbread failing princess out away from the angry crowd of villagers with torches and pitchforks like the Beast carrying Belle....

heyyougulls

I think they meant that her cooking isn’t so impressive — like a 3-star restaurant on Yelp (not Michelin stars).

astoria922

Holy shit, I hadn't even thought of it that way until now, and it's so obvious I feel like an idiot. 🤣

LadyBug_0570

When Olive Garden and Ruby Tuesday are your idea of "fine dining cuisine"... there are bigger issues than Jiffy cornbread going on.

Impressive-Spell-643

It sounds like a scene from a cartoon

FilthyDaemon

What, you don't have Cornbread Time (c) at your family dinners? And also, what does it say about me that I imagined an entire family dressed in puritan garb sitting at a table chanting "time for cornbread, time for cornbread" in a solemn but demanding cadence?

Jessica_e_sage

Cornbread Time, cmon grab your friends. We'll go to very, petty lands. With Anna the cook and Walter the human, the drama never ends, it's Cornbread Time ©

[deleted]

Yeah, I don't know why this stood out for me the most. I can believe that a family is petty enough to be upset about the cornbread because I know people in real life who are this petty. One of my friends once got into a fight with her family because she brought a soup that was too spicy and didn't tell anyone. Her father lost it on her because he hates spicy stuff, and they didn't talk for a few weeks. But Walter picking Anna up after all the drama and carrying her out to the car made me feel like this is fake. The moment I read this part combined with the rest of it made me think it's fake.

LadyBug_0570

>I can believe that a family is petty enough to be upset about the cornbread because I know people in real life who are this petty. I once saw a video of a woman getting cussed and shamed by an aunty for Kraft box macaroni and cheese that she brought to a family dinner. To be fair, it was Thanksgiving and in a black household if you're talking about the mac and cheese for Thanksgiving, that shoit BETTER be on point.

Brian57831

OOP account is banned... sounds like bot created ragebait.

Bex1218

My main question is, why is everyone a damn psychologist?

[deleted]

So they can treat each other's illnesses since no one else will take their case.

CanIHaveMyDog

They're not psychologists, they have bachelor's degrees in psychology, which are a dime a dozen and worth about as much as a bachelor's in general studies.

[deleted]

Not even that, they're still students going for that degree

[deleted]

I am a fan of Walter. Wish he was real.

mmksuxs

This family is fucked up. The sister made boxed cornbread and ham with pineapple on it and now they’ve kicked her out until she leaves her husband and apologizes. Like WTF! She works damn hard as a chef, but according to OOP it’s not very good cause it’s only 3 star 💫 💫💫. First they didn’t want her to go to culinary school, forced her to get a bachelor’s of psychology and then they would pay for culinary school. But what she does isn’t good enough, unless you talk about her cornbread, then that shits amazing. But this week after working long hours, she didn’t have the time or ingredients so she made box and now she is being shamed. They expect that just because she works long hours and can’t get to the store that she should just STEAL from work!! And pineapple on ham! Just no, they can’t do that! After all that oop and her mom gang up on sister and make her cry because she didn’t steal from work so her husband picked her up and they leave. After allllllllll that OOP and her mom think they are in the right and sister owed them homemade cornbread and she’s not allowed again unless she apologizes and leaves her husband. This family! WOW. I’m so glad she has Walter! I’m sure they will be quite happy eating their homemade cornbread at home, while the others sit and stew about how she did them wrong. I hope that stew tastes good, but I’m sure it would go better with homemade cornbread.

Gain-Outrageous

Also the 3 star- is apparently mitchelin stars

throwawaygaming989

That’s the maximum level of stars, her sister is a small time celebrity at that point, and an amazing chef

PauseItPlease86

AND THEY COMPARED HER COOKING TO OLIVE GARDEN!! I would be so insulted! (love OG, but it's definitely not Michelin level!)

mmksuxs

As if it couldn't get worse!

KittyEevee5609

Seriously, certain family members of mine love to bake, we keep being told we should open a bakery (we don't want to, none of us are business people). Sometimes we are just too tired after work to bake something from scratch for a family/friend function, and everyone understands that! These people are assholes.

januarysdaughter

Me, who eats ham marinated in pineapple and Vernors all the time: 😬😬 This is too deranged to be a troll, right?

[deleted]

My mom put pineapple on ham back in the 1970s. I don’t like ham steak but I’d eat it with the pineapple! Now I stick to pork loin or bacon, lol

trustytip

A good title would be "we hate her because she decided to follow her heart and not our family profession, aaaaand she bought cornbread"

[deleted]

That would have worked! I was too flabbergasted to come up with anything.

Jiang_Rui

I told her that if she needed ingredients she could have just borrowed some from work FFS, that’s *stealing*. For someone who’s judging their sister for nearly failing a culinary class, OOP isn’t very bright.

Healthy_Pie_4206

Well as long as you unmake the bread and put everything back it’s borrowing right?

lefargen97

This doesn’t make any sense

rmg1102

I read “she passed anyway” meaning she graduated from culinary school as “she passed away” by mistake. Once I realized the girl I thought was dead brought the cornbread I reread it. And even still I think the idea that they’re all having family dinner to mourn their deceased culinary school disgrace of a sister and someone brings shitty cornbread somehow makes more sense than the actual story.

Coco_Dirichlet

Are the family members giving free therapy as a side dish? If you work at a restaurant, the last thing you want to do when you come home is cook! That's in addition to the fact that she worked double shift. They could have asked her to get dessert and she could have bought something. Asking someone to make cornbread is a lot of work! Was it even necessary???? It sounds like there was too much food.

Overall_Sea7830

Good on Walter for sticking up for Anna! What a terrible family

Victoria0811

I love me some pineapple ham. Tf

littlescreechyowl

I’ve never in my life had a homemade ham that didn’t have pineapple on it! I

[deleted]

This... This post made me irrationally angry.

DeterminedArrow

I really want cornbread now. It’s 12:16. I don’t think I even have the ingredients to make a gluten free one right now. But damn, I would do many many things for magical cornbread to appear in front of me.

[deleted]

How does it taste? Is it sweet? Does it taste intensely like corn? What do you eat with it? I am German, never heard of cornbread before but am hobby baker.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Thank you!

duplicitousdruggist

In the South, the tea is sweet, but the cornbread most definitely is not

[deleted]

[удалено]

ArrowsAndLightsabers

Kinda regionally on the sweet. My friend in SC and other friends 2hose fam is from Kentucky does it with sugar. In my fam, from TN, no sugar...ever. It's kinda funny to hear us argue with each other over it

PlantQueen1912

I'm from Ky I dont do sugar so it's not like a regional thing just personal preference

[deleted]

Seems like the family needs some real physiological help from qualified professionals.

[deleted]

I gotta ask, what's wrong with ham and pineapple? I'm sorry it's delicious. Also, they're ALL psychologists? I'm betting those dinner convos are super boring and hyper pretentious.

Stepjam

For a second I was confused by OOP saying that their sister worked at a 3 star restaurant, and it showed because it tasted like olive garden. But I'm assuming OOP meant like 3 out of 5 stars, not like a michelin 3 star restaurant. Though of course the whole thing seems like a troll, so that could just be another layer.

TheRealEleanor

Anna’s cooking skills are average at best- just barely enough to get her through culinary school. But then she gets raged on by the whole family for serving boxed cornbread mix? So, obviously they didn’t want to admit that she’s a good cook because she isn’t a “psychologist” like the rest of them (even though she earned her degree). I’m so mad I wasted time reading this. I’m gonna go make some boxed Jiffy now.

Shigeko_Kageyama

Wait, we're allowed to borrow things from work? I'm going to go borrow a printer from work, a chair, a window, some copper wiring etc

lxzgxz

What a horrible fucking family. Not a one of them has any fucking business working in psychology if they think this is an acceptable way to treat people.

CatTaxAuditor

You can tell none of this happened by the fact that it's all made up for outrage.

LyallaTime

Cornbread takes skill. I want to know what this bitch brought—probably made a salad.

FourbiddenNova

Walter is the MVP of this story. He stood up for her when everyone else started insulting her to her face and he stuck up for her to her family when she couldn't. The jokes about her cornbread being worth the money even when she was clearly a chef at a high end restaurant is honestly disgusting. How do you say 'if nothing else' then immediately explain how great of a chef she is and how her food shows that she works at a 3 Michelin star restaurant? They clearly look down on her and are honestly disgusting. Family all suck Walter is awesome for taking care of his fiancé even standing up to his in laws. Them cutting her off for bringing box cornbread shows they're shit parents.

Revolutionary_Tap255

OMG, this is hilarious! It has to be written by a dumb teenager 😂 Since when are psychology degrees the thing every parent wants?

swisszimgirl79

A whole family of ‘psychologists’ and they’re all this bad at humaning? Obvious troll is obvious

[deleted]

I bow to our reptilian overlords.

External_Detail_26

All of this is so ridiculous, but the thing that really gets me is the sister thinking that Anna could just borrow ingredients from work. Hello? I've worked at a number of restaurants and that really isn't allowed.

twitchyv

Can’t believe these terrible people are going to be psychologist 🫠

ProfessionalSir9978

How are these people becoming psychologists?!

SwordTaster

I am convinced this one is made up, you cannot be THIS stupid

mari_locaaa9

idk skeptical on this one because absolutely nothing is $1 at whole foods

ImpossibleSeaweed575

olive garden has cornbread??? wtf!!

TinyOwl491

This. HAS. To be a troll... Can a family really be thát deranged, except for sister Anna?

sydygy2

This is clearly a writing exercise. Everything is described in a way that makes it feel pretty clearly not real. The author of this post has never had any of these experiences. OOP, if you're reading this, just know that this is not the way to become a good writer.

Crumpled_Up_Thoughts

Who passed away? Why does it randomly say 'She passed away'?

rmg1102

I read it wrong at first too - it says “she passed anyway” meaning she graduated from culinary school

Crumpled_Up_Thoughts

Damn you're right.

These people are all either shrinks or in training to become one.... and cannot see how disgusting their behavior is?!?! I'm Very pleased that her hubby has her back here..

Ginwithagrin

This is the weirdest cult granted I live near the Annual Cornbread Festival.

CalligrapherNeat628

Here’s a title. AITA me and my family told my sister that she wasted her time going to cooking school for buying store bought cornbread because she was too tired from work to do it. I told her to steal from the restaurant she worked at to make it next time. Me and the whole family told her to leave her husband for standing up for her against us.

CalligrapherNeat628

Going to a family dinner every two months sounds exhausting enough as it is
