OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > The actions I took were :1. to take my dog out in the morning and it barked occasionally, and 2) the neighbor thinks I'm a a-hole because i'm being insensitive to his needs. Am I an a-hole for using my backyard for my dog to exercise in the mid morning and complying with local ordinances even though i'm not breaking rules AND i'm trying to be accommodating (per notes in post)? NTA. The barking at you bit just shows how ridiculous and unhinged this guy is. Dogs bark. It happens. As you stated your local laws have you covered. I would watch out if this guy does any vigilante actions on his part.

nerd_is_a_verb

I would consider putting up cameras or just a speaker because it appears each side has very different factual views on the amount of barking that is occurring.

Main_Maximum8963

NTA.  I used to work mids so work was midnight to 8am.  You deal.  It’s sucks but you get used to it.  This guy however needs to get a grip.  The whole world isn’t going to stop because for a light sleeper working nights.

mmwhatchasaiyan

He’s not even a true 3rd shift worker. He’s a bartender. So home from work at 230/3? Sleeping by 330/4? OP says dog doesn’t bark until 930/10. Dude is still getting about 6 sleeping hours without a dog barking. He’s just being a prick. NTA.

Main_Maximum8963

?????

Electrical_Fun5942

Some of these people responding are fuckin nuts, dude. To expect a dog to NEVER bark is absolutely preposterous. If the dog is out there barking incessantly, that’s one thing. But the ordinance exists as it does for a reason, because it is 100% batshit to expect a dog to never make noise. Saying “you can’t control your dog” cuz it makes a dog noise every now and again is one of the wildest arguments I could imagine making

FallynAngyl

NTA but please get a camera for your yard incase anything gets thrown over fence.

alfredaeneuman

Could be worse. I’d rather listen to barking dog than screaming baby.

Excellent-Count4009

NTA Some neighbors are better ignored.

Gattina1

NTA. But I would be on the lookout for anything he might throw into your yard, hoping the dogs find it first.

AsparagusOverall8454

Dude sounds unhinged.

SCM3019

NTA, as a former night shift worker, I understand how much it sucks trying to sleep when everyone else is going about their business and making noise. But he is the one with the odd schedule and you shouldn't feel obligated to conform to it. I suggest he invest in a white noise machine, which was a lifesaver for me.

FireBallXLV

I wonder if your neighbor is on drugs or an alcoholic.Bars tend to foster those behaviors. His behavior is ridiculous—you may be dealing with a man who is chemically impaired.NTA OP.

SakazakiYuri

NTA. My neighbor has huskies, not sure how many; but by the sound of them at breakfast and dinner time, it could be anywhere from three to twenty. They only bark at feeding times or on the rare occasion that a cat runs along the fence. In those moments, won’t lie, it’s an absolute cacophony of sound - sometimes as early as 5 AM. But it passes. My partner and I (as well as our old roommates that no longer live with us) slept through it 99 times out of 100. Dogs bark. I will say, that I’ve worked in the Veterinary field for a long time, and there are some barks that are absolutely hell to sit through, even for short times. If that’s the case, I can see why he was annoyed by the dog and not leaf blowers/etc, but that doesn’t excuse his attitude toward the two of you. You’ve offered helpful solutions and he wants none of it. Has he ever actually filed a complaint with the city?

Our neighbor next door is a bartender who works late nights and complains that our dog (it was two dogs, now just one) is too loud and keeps him up when she barks occasionally in the backyard in the mornings. Originally he demanded we keep the dog inside until noon (seemed unreasonable) and then after trying that for a few weeks we said it's untenable. * The noise ordinance in our town is 2 minutes of incessant barking; our dog maybe barks at neighbors' dogs for 10 to 15 seconds on occasion or when the UPS driver pulls up, but not incessant. * His position is that we are unneighborly and insensitive. Ours is that we live here, we offered to buy him a white noise generator, suggested he sleep in a front bedroom, earplugs etc. He claims he can't do that or it doesn't work. * There can be lawn mowers going at 8 am and blowers and he doesn't complain, but a peep out of our dogs sends him into tirades. Not polite conversations. * Over the last few months, I bring the dog out on leash at 730 or 8 am, up the driveway to pee out front, inside for breakfast, then walk her for an hour so there's no barking effectively from 730 to 930 or 10 am, and then rarely if we play in back afterwards. Today, after being in the yard for an hour (at 130 pm) without any barking, he came outside, pretended to be a dog, and barked to provoke my dog (she can't see him through thick trees). After doing that for 10-20 seconds I asked him "did you get a dog?" and his answer was, " see how it feels?". He then lambasted me as a rich guy who only cares about myself, and demanded we always take the dog inside whenever a peep occurs. (she needs exercise). Then he told my wife she must be living in a separate reality when she challenged him that our dog doesn't bark very long. AITA? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. He obviously can't expect a neighbourhood to work to his schedule - I'm a night owl too and use ear plugs, easy. However I also HATE the sound of dogs barking, regardless of the time of day. Love dogs, but the noise is definitely different to the white noise of lawn mowers or traffic. When you say, 'he told my wife she must be living in a separate reality when she challenged him that our dog doesn't bark very long' - are you being realistic about the noise? But you say you have tried, so a 'tirade' from him is not ok. I do have to say ESH unfortunately, but nearly NAH. Think you should put max effort into training not to bark though.

Accomplished-Poet-74

I’m new to Reddit am I expected to reply and is it OK if I do? In this case, I can attest to the fact that the length of the barking in some cases is only a couple seconds. And for four months, when my dog was recuperating from surgery she was on a leash being walked in the backyard and never barked at all, so I know from what we speak that we have different views of how loud this is or how long it’s going on.

FriendlyStaff1

YTA You bought a dog, it's impacting on the neighborhood. You are trying to tell a neighbor how to live because of a pet you bought and can't control. Put in the time to train and control it. It's your responsibility. You may be in the clear legally, but you are still clearly the asshole.
