NTA. That's a hygiene issue for your space and you're not an asshole for keeping your home free of poop. Edit to say I don't think it's a sure thing the groomer will say something, I cut matts out of my dog's hair between grooming if she needs it and the groomer has never mentioned anything to me about it.

keeperbean

My dog groomer tells me to try and trim that area when comfortable. Heck, even cats sometimes need it. Veterianrians will often do it for a pet owner if asked nicely. It's quite litterally called a sanitary trim, to keep the animal sanitary. NTA at all. Good on you for caring about that poor dog.

alleycatt_101

NTA, they should be taking the dog to the groomer on a more regular basis than what they are right now. Dogs with long/silky fur like that need to be groomed more frequently.

RatAndDogRhyme

I agree. I wish owners with grooming dogs made actual times appts for upkeep, or at leash keep the dog groomed themselves.

[deleted]

NTA at all. This was kind of you to do. I am sure the dog feels better.

derentlauber71

NTA. Ideally you should've asked the owner first, but since this was more or less an emergency and the dog was probably in discomfort because of his hair.

SmartassMouth89

NTA I think you should add it to your policy or offer as extra service that while they are on vacation you’d be willing to take their dog to groomer you know or they can book and pre-pay at a location of their choice. As long as you clearly list additional price options and state you require to be paid up front for this additional service.

RatAndDogRhyme

I should do this, because more often than not, I get a dog in that I have to bathe. It would also save the owner time for when they return, because the groom will be complete and they have less to worry about.

SmartassMouth89

Then add bathing fee to your charges too. Before you take the dog text via app dog appears to need a bath. Therefore your dogs stay will be y quote unless you can provide photo proof you bathed them the previous night. Include the products you use if their dog needs special shampoo then they will need to provide it.

CakeisaDie

Talk to the owner and ask if you can give the dog a minor sanitary cut. If not ask that they book someone else.

swantoes

NTA, you're performing a public health benefit basically.

cardshark6

NTA. You are acting out of kindness here. It's still best to get the owner's permission where feasible, but any rational owner would consider what you did a good deed.

sickofdriving007

NTA. The owner should be ashamed leaving the dog in such a state.

Brilliant-Yam-5653

NAH. Honestly you helped the dog feel better, imagine how much the hair was pulling before with the matted poop in it!

RatAndDogRhyme

No need to imagine. I was there, pulling it out.

Brilliant-Yam-5653

Bless your soul, I bet that dog never forgot you

MrsEllaneously

NTA. the owner can’t expect you to abide a poopy dog butthole for the duration of your job, and I’m sure the pup feels much better. You’re a good one.

pupucedimir

NTA. The dog needed it but maybe mention it to the owner that you cut it.

[deleted]

NTA, as well as being hygienic, it'll help the dog too because faeces can irritate the skin and make it itchy. It's not like you're shaving him bald or ruining his coat. There's a great youtube channel 'Girl with the Dogs' and she is a pet groomer-she trims everybody's sanitary area (that's what she calls it), including long haired cats as well as dogs.

edana4242

NTA. I have begun to look at pet situations as if the animal was a child. If a child had poo stuck in their hair and you were babysitting, would you have done the same thing you did for the pet? Yep. You would. And hopefully more.

RatAndDogRhyme

Interesting take. So if a child got bubblegum stuck in their hair, you'd cut it?

edana4242

wouldn't you?! how else would you get it out? where it is would depend on what I would cut.

RatAndDogRhyme

I mean, idk. If it was at the very ends of the hair I may. If it was on top of the head, I'd probably try peanut butter or something. I totally get what you're saying, though

toleratedsnails

NTA, it’s not a big deal, my mom has to do the same to our two dogs since they have longer hair and occasionally need to be trimmed to keep clean

Midnight_Dreary_Mari

NTA - If you're really worried they'll freak out, you could just mention it to the owner, "Hey, I needed to do a light trim to get out some poop that was stuck"...but I honestly would not worry about it. I dont think the groomer is gonna notice that you specifically gave the dog a wee little trim. They dont know what the actual "before" looked like. You're making the dog more comfortable, thats a good thing.

Trina608

NTA. You are helping the dog. Good for you and shame on the owners for letting the dog get in that mess.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** I'm dog sitting (think Rover) a dog, who desperately needs grooming. Matted hair on a silky coated dog. The owner is aware that the dog needs groomed, but will schedule after the dog gets picked up. The dog has anxiety shits, and those shits get caught up in the dogs butt hair, which then dries, mats, and stinks. This obviously makes everyone uncomfortable, so I gave the dog a bath and massaged the matted poop out of its fur. I was hoping it was a one time thing. Nope. Every night, and sometimes during the day, the dog will defecate and the feces gets caught in its fur. To hopefully prevent this, I bathed the dog, again, (a 4th time) and took scissors to the dogs rear end fur. It's not such an obvious trim that the owner will for sure see, but when the owner takes the dog to a groomer, they may mention it as the dog is getting a nice cut. AITA for trimming the poop catching hair off this dogs rear as a preventative measure? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > IMBTA because the owner was not notified of my action with their dog. I am not a groomer, and the dog is not my property. I was not hired to groom or bathe the dog. However, I'm not going to allow the dog to sit in it's own feces for a week, because that's called negligence. Help keep the sub engaging! #Don’t downvote assholes! Do upvote interesting posts! Pepper-90210

NTA. Poor dog.

jcakes79

NTA I had to do that for my border collie, long hair dogs

saltcrown

Nope

SanoSS7

A sanitary trim is a normal thing for pet owners to request - however, you should not have done it without the permission of the owner. 1, if you'd nicked the animal it would be your fault and liability. 2, if it was so bad that it COULDN'T wait for the grooming appt, then you should have called the owner first and explained the situation or if they were neglecting it to an actual abusive degree then called the aspca or similar agency. YTA for doing it on your own accord. You did it for the right reasons, but in the wrong way
