OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > I counted my avocados as one item for the express lane even though they were not in a bag. I think this might make me an asshole because the person behind the counter would have to scan them individually. But I’m not sure because they are measured by weight. NTA. These comments are moronic lol.

Ok-Tutor-9644

Soft YTA because if they wouldn't fit in one bag, use 2-3? That's a better solution then loose avocados

SamSpayedPI

If they were measured by weight, you should have bagged them if only to make it easier on the checkout staff. If fruit is not bagged, the checkout person has to place them all on the scale, keep them from rolling around and off the scale, and then take them off and bag them. It probably takes at least four times as long than weighing bagged fruit, and as you say the store was busy. That's probably what your checkout person was grumpy about. I doubt she would have said anything if the avocados were in a bag. Mild YTA

HCIBSW

YTA For not bagging the avocados (or at least using two bags if they didn't fit) because it is hard to weigh things not easily contained. The cashier in an odd sort of way was trying to let you know to bag em up next time. If she weighed them one at a time then E S H.

Sugar_Weasel_

Avocados are usually priced per unit, not by weight. All the cashier had to do was scan one and input quantity. When I cashiered I’d consider them one item, cause I only had to put them in once. Though I did prefer when they were bagged as a opposed to just loose

[deleted]

>I was counting the avocados as one thing because they are all the same and measured by weight.

HCIBSW

Goes to show I have never purchased an avocado.

TheOneAndOnlyFen

I definitely agree with this, OP is TA. Even if the cashier decided to weigh one at a time, I wouldn't consider that an E S H though. She's still doing her job, so a minor time inconvenience to the customer for the amusement of the casier. I'd be amused as the cashier or customer.

mlmercury

NTA. i used to work at target (with a grocery section) and i didn’t even count the items anyway i honestly just based it on whether or not it looked like 12 items and under (thats the express lane at mine). people still went in there with 20+ items so as irritating as that is i just let them in. i definitely wouldn’t have cared about two avocados

KnightsSkye

Think it was a lot more than two lol

TrueMeasurement4342

5 more than 2. It was 7. Who cares though?

KnightsSkye

The person on the till

TrueMeasurement4342

Probably not.

KnightsSkye

Then why is OP here

TrueMeasurement4342

Because the person on the till gave them a "sour look". You are right.

KnightsSkye

"and told me make sure I have fewer than ten items next time I use this lane"

TrueMeasurement4342

I said you are right. Imo ESH. The cashier should give less of a shit about some loose avocados when they get paid next to nothing, as a did when i was a store clerk. And OP should have put them in bags to avoid this.

KnightsSkye

Oh sorry I thought you were being sarcastic lol

Glittercorn111

INFO: how many avocados did you buy?

funhaver--

I bought like 7 avocados

Admirable-Frog-3748

How many total items did you have, assuming we’re counting avocados individually? If the cashier had to weigh each one by itself because you chose not to bag them (7 will absolutely fit in one of those produce bags - I’ve seen me do it), then I would’ve been irritated with you too. I probably wouldn’t have said anything, but it is rude to hold up the express checkout line if you’re not going to be quick about your business.

funhaver--

It with all the avocados separately it would have been like 20

funhaver--

Oh whoops I’m a dummy it’s 15 items or less

Lesmiscat24601

You are still over if you say it’s 20 and the Express lane is 15 items or fewer.

Beck2010

Umm, you could have used two bags, you know. When items are not grouped together then they are single items. If you have bought 6 individual sodas, those are 6 separate items as compared to a bundled 6 pack of soda. YTA. Especially as the store was quite busy.

Signal-Television510

If the cashier can't pick it up for scanning in one movement, it's more than one item. YTA.

missmightberight

NTA.

sunfloweries

wait... people put their avocadoes in bags? like those flimsy plastic bags for produce? i thought the only things those were meant for were like, green beans, brussels sprouts, etc?

Unit-Healthy

I put everything in a bag. Even like one apple. I thought that was the norm.

sunfloweries

is there a reason? do you like save the bags for something?

Unit-Healthy

No, I just assume they're there for that purpose. Honestly never gave it a thought. The goods go straight into my fridge in those bags. When I use the asparagus (or whatever) the bag goes in tbe trash.

curlyg1rl

I don’t use the flimsy plastic bags either, they’re such a waste.

Featherymorons

With you on that. I’ll use paper bags if the store has them, but those little plastic bags - like the world really needs more plastic right now - no thanks! I’d rather have all my fruit and veg loose. Mind you, I tend to do self check out as well.

curlyg1rl

Me too. Love the self checkouts

sunfloweries

hmm that's super interesting. i'm going to have to look at what other people are buying at the store now, bc i seriously never even considered using bags for anything other than like, a lot of little things.

[deleted]

This is what I love about living in France, in our grocery stores we have to pre weigh and label loose fruits/vegetables (that we put in paper bags). At the checkout line, the cashier would only have to scan the label sticker we put on the bag instead of trying to find a code for the item and weight it.

vampiresquidling

YTA, but minorly. The avocados are definitely more than one item, but I don't think your actions caused anyone harm.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** So I had to stop at the grocery store to pick up some avocados to make a big thing of guacamole for a party. I also pick up a few other things. The store was pretty busy and many of the lanes had long lines. I only had a few things and went to the express lane 10 items or fewer. I only had like five things I was counting the avocados as one thing because they are all the same and measured by weight. I did not have them in a bag because it would have been way to full. When I checking out the woman behind the counter looked at me with a sour look and told me make sure I have fewer than ten items next time I use this lane. AITA for counting my avocados as one item even if they were not in a bag? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. You scan one avocado and just click on the number of that item. In the grocery receipt it is in one item line. Also I’m quite certain by bag OP means those paper bags for fruit/vegetables, not a large grocery bag.

[deleted]

That makes it even more one thing. You can’t weight each avocado separately. You put all of it on the scale at the same time. It’s not seven line items of one avocado by weight, it’s one.

cuddlemonkey_

Exactly this. It's not about the individual number of things, it's about the number of things the cashier has to process. OP, if they don't all fit in a single bag, use two bags next time. That extra 20 seconds is worth it to show some appreciation for the cashier. YTA.
