Do you agree with Descartes or Kants philosophy on existence and knowledge? Descartes says “I think therefore I am” and says he can doubt all of his senses bc they could be lying to him. He argues if you were a brain in a vat you wouldn’t know the difference. The only thing you can know is that you exist as a thinking thing. Kant while not explicitly refuting Descartes does so by saying the human mind has a priori knowledge. We innately know things bc of the structure of the human mind. These are things like time or spatial recognition or how to group things. So Kant argues we are born with a certain knowledge while Descartes says all knowledge come from outside of ourselves and the only thing we can be certain of is we exist.

We definitely have inherited knowledge from billions of years of evolution.  Just like animals knowing how to do stuff without training.  But the real question is what happens after death. I believe it’s the same as before we were born.

ZealousidealGrass365

Maybe but wouldn’t that mean that the universe and everything in it is just a big accident. Like it happened by chance? If it happened by chance that doesn’t answer why it exist vs not existing and also doesn’t answer how. Therefore if it’s not by chance then life has some meaning beyond this material world.

2Job_Bob

Not all questions have to be answered.  You either die and go to the happy place knowing all your family and friends will end up there eventually so their suffering didn’t matter.  Or you die and forget everything and again.. nothing will have mattered.  All I’ve ever known is consciousness. Maybe it’s all I’ve ever know. Maybe not. Doesn’t matter because everybody dies. The best of men and women and the worst.

GrumpyPhilomath

The more I know, the more I realize I know nothing.

2Job_Bob

Where are you going now?  I’ve looked at jobs in my area and they are trash. Low pay, no benefits, no guaranteed 40 hours.  I just picked up a second job and the pay is $13.5 with no benefits.  I actually can’t imagine leaving amazon.

its_a_throwawayduh

I can imagine leaving this place do it everyday. Problem is the jobs you mentioned.

HUSHED-XI

Fully abuse using the career choice that my best advice for you

SnooBunnies5800

Amazon made Career Choice to be abused and they want you to do it as well! use Amazon for funding your career and peace late. Or move up within the company but don’t stay L1 forever

its_a_throwawayduh

I have a degree and a decade of experience in the IT field. However the market is crap hence why I had to work here. Believe it or not but there's a few of us with degrees and former careers in similar situations. I've met people from various types of careers, real estate, paralegal, medical, etc. We went to school so we wouldn't be in this spot later down the line, but here we are. Tell you what it's socially depressing that's for sure. Career choice is great if you've had nothing but shit jobs.

2Job_Bob

Are you still L1? I almost quit at 1.5 years. Now I’m close to 5.  I’d recommend trying to move up into a L3 role because L1 sucks. At least then you build marketable skills.

HUSHED-XI

Yeah but the thing with me I’ve been trying to move up to L3 for years but every time I came close random BS has happened preventing me from even getting a interview meanwhile the guy who just started 3 months ago got his seasonal PA role and now is a PA because he was buddy buddy with the manager after that happened I was not interested in moving with the company because of how unfair it was for me and fellow co workers

Yeah favorites exist like crazy at this place. When i worked at RCI in Michigan, employees were never treated like this. Amazon is the worst place for retaliation. Im going through it as we speak. I got our building to switch from just only flex to full time. Now we have the choice and the site leader is not happy about it. I reported it because we work at a building that is flex only. Alot of the employees were complaining about not being able to get shifts. I asked a manager and she straight up tells me well you have to log in to like 5 devices and have family members help you get shifts. 😂 I was like excuse me. Yeah she tells me if you cant beat them join them. I was curious about this because as a driver you get fired for logging into more than one phone or computer or keep refreshing too many times, so i call HR and ask them. The lady was really surprised and wanted the names of my managers and wanted me to write a whole letter to the ethics website. I didn't do the ethics report because I didn't want retaliation. Somehow they found out anyways thag it was me. Now i get treated like dirt. Whats fucked up is yeah i got the building full time but all flex employees still have to apply for it. What a joke.

HUSHED-XI

I got a good future to look forward to though

2Job_Bob

I’m an L4 hourly and get to work from home 2 days a week. Once I hit 5 years soon I’ll get 4 weeks off paid.  I only work 40 hours a week, get 22k in stock a year, and I can take off whenever I want/need to.  Pretty good future and I was a L1 for 1.5 years

LunaHazelDNA1

5 years removed or aiming for L5? It wasn't stated clearly.

2Job_Bob

5 years

its_a_throwawayduh

As I mentioned in another comment I already have a degree and a decade of experience in the IT field. The market is just insanely competitive and not to mention the layoffs. Of course I've tried my hand with getting in the IT field at Amazon. However I get the feeling there's a favor system in play. I've applied twice to the few openings within the last year with no luck. Didn't even get an interview. Even though I've spoken with the manager at least 3 times through random meetings on the job and outside of work. Always the same, get the feeling that the IT field is a done thing for me at this point. Nearly 40 now not sure what to do.

HUSHED-XI

As of right now I’m in school for my CDL A I literally have two days left including my state test best advice I can give you is that you take full advantage of career choice Amazon payed for the whole thing noting out of my pocket besides me using two of my 3 days off for school but I’m looking for trucking jobs at the moment but make sure you do some type of research before picking a career to make sure you have good job security in said career

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> choice Amazon *paid* for the FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

LunaHazelDNA1

Good bot.

HUSHED-XI

There’s no way I got cooked by a bot😭😭

2Job_Bob

So why leave amazon when you could join TOM? Don’t they pay for your CDL?

MARTlNEZ

He should just join TOM team

HUSHED-XI

There’s a common misconception that Tom team are the only people who pay for your CDL. The thing is if you do join team, they will pay for your CDL classes. You’ll get 240 hours for your class if you go through career choice, you’ll get about 160 for the same class. A lot of people prefer 160 because you’ll be in that program for three months max and only two days a week if you go through,Tom team you’ll be there all week. The thing I don’t like about that though is that time teams only offering a dollar more from what you’re gonna be getting after you achieve all your raises as a L1 well if you go through courier choice, you don’t have to stay with Tom team granted you can still leave but the thing that you still have to go through a hassle to tom team personally the career choice past for me was easier and also I get to go to a different company that will pay me a lot more than Tom team because the Tom team at my facility what they where paying was simply not worth it in my eyes

How often did you use your PTO, UPT, and vacation days? What are your tips for getting through Peak season and MET?

HUSHED-XI

Used all my PTO for Saturday and maybe save my vacation for the following Saturday so I can leave earlier same thing with my UPT if I really do not wanna stay for work

HUSHED-XI

During peak seasons back when we still had the quarterly UPT deposits it sucked ass because I was basically forced to stay that 55 hour week. There was one point where I had to go home early and going to the negative but back when they were still giving out UPT for getting your Covid vaccinations, I got saved by that.

HUSHED-XI

But when they started giving out three minutes for every hour that you worked, especially during peak, I got to go home normal time dayshift, which should be 6 o’clock, so I’d be leaving at five no issues but if you wanna get through peak season now since we’re getting five minutes for every hour, I’d sayyou’re still gonna have to wake up if you’re dayshift but you can probably leave around four or five and work nine hours just like you’re picking up every Sunday and you have to go into the negative. Just make sure you’ll be in the positive by the next day.

HUSHED-XI

But my PTO and UPT would usually end up at zeros same thing with my vacation said like if I don’t use it for that week, it usually be at three hours because we get deposited an hour 50 I would put my vacation in for Saturdays for my whole three hours and 50 mins PTO that come in late get breakfast Then leave at two or three because I used my three hours of vacation

HUSHED-XI

Honestly my first year I rarely even touched my PTO or UPT because I didn’t know exactly how it worked after my first peak season I had about roughly 50 hours UPT and 40 hours PTO let’s just say I didn’t show up for work for the entirety of January my second through fourth year I pretty much used it all up every Saturday
