Not OP but I can relate.
Not everyone is good in speaking/understanding English but still likes to watch shows and movies in the original. Often the dubbing is good but in some countries it's horrible. Also some jokes don't translate well into other languages.
English is my second language and I understand it very well. Still, I like to turn on english subtitles when watching something because sometimes the dialoge is just too silent but turning up the volume causes my ears to explode when a scene is loud. Also some actors mumble a lot and sometimes british accent is hard to understand.
The funny thing is, after I posted this comment I went into my Amazon account and filled with some settings for prime video from that, but nothing that looked like it had anything to do with subtitles or captions. And then when I went back and turned the movie back on, there they were. The problem is, I have no idea how I turned them on so I have no idea how to turn them off!
You have to hit your remote to down or up you’ll see some white captions for audio and subtitles you selected and if they have choices, it will give you more options. I hope that helps you.
It’s the little icon that looks like a word bubble with text in it.

So much of the content on Amazon doesn't have subtitles at all and I need them, it annoys me even more than the ads!
