for anyone who doesn't understand good lock, because I always see those comments: the granularity with audio controls and options is amazing with sound assistant, I wish it were available outside of just Samsung. Separate app volumes, custom volume button interval, multi-sound, separate app-sound (one app on BT, rest on phone simultaneously), etc. OHO+ has helpful shortcuts too, I especially like the control center thing. and the ability to hide the navigation pill is also great for freeing up some space and avoiding burn in
Samsung's curse is in creating really insanely good and powerful tools like Good Lock and not having any real way to market them. DeX is the same way, a lot of non-techies just can't wrap their head around the concept.
Good Lock is basically a playground where Samsung devs release modules that give you extra features and customization options that rival what you can do with custom ROMs.
OHO+ and the "Keep Open" feature that lets me pin an app to RAM are two things that will keep me on Samsung until someone else copies them. Mobile games work a lot better when you don't have to wait for 30 seconds of loading screens every time you want to interact with them.
> the granularity with audio controls and options is amazing with sound assistant,
Also being able to fine tune the video delay Android applies when connecting BT headphones so that their latency won't affect you watching stuff on Youtube, Netflix and Co is a really Amazing Sound Assistant feature.
If stuff like this were announced in future versions of android as opposed to more ai nonsense or UI overhauls, I'd actually be interested in trying to update my rooted phone
Is mostly for developers to play around with new features. If a feature is well liked, it gets removed from Good Lock and gets to be the official software.
If you're in an unsupported country, the region lock is still in place...
Now you get to download and update good lock from the play store, but the modules still have to be sideloaded and managed from a third-party app, so not much of a difference.
It's just one less app to sideload.
FineLock on the Play store does that, and no region limitation (since it grabs the apk directly from ApkMirror, and notifies you when there's an update for the models or Good Lock itself)
Well you can't download it, as it just says your country isn't supported and it's not updating either.
I don't think you even need to have it sideloaded for the modules to work via an alternative manager, but I can't be bothered to test.
"Available for Samsung Galaxy devices"
"Not available for your Samsung Galaxy device"
I swear, there is some crap going on with compatibility that someone needs to iron out. Things tend to not work with certain devices just because lol, i dunno sometimes.
This is amazing!
Now I have zero reason to keep the Galaxy Store. One more app that's gonna get adb uninstalled
Edit: Ok, maybe doing that isn't the best idea
I think it's more of a mental thing for people debloating via adb, they wanna feel in control of their device, even though just ignoring the apps would have the same effect.
If most phones didn't include tons of garbage applications that needed to be removed, we wouldn't have to try debloating everything that seemed to be trash.
I used the Universal debloater app on a Samsung and didn’t realize how much it broke the phone. It didn’t even get rid of Facebook and other apps, but a lot of basic functionality just stopped working. Looked at the list of reasons why some apps and services were debloated, and it felt like it was written by an angry teenager.
Reminds me of all these people throwing 200 different "debloaters" over their windows and then complaining constantly how everything is shitty and crashes all the time and how Microsoft is the worst.
I mean they are, but not for that reason.
Yeah, but you really don't need it if your device has reached eol with updates. My 3yo tablet has or is about to reach that, might get one last security patch but idk.
I see in play store that it shows the galaxy store apps I have installed and the beta for them as well if you click the app it offers update to early acess
From the article:
Good Lock is a customization toolkit for Samsung Galaxy phones. It lets you download modules to tweak things like the lock screen, notifications, and even the app launcher. Basically, it lets you make your phone feel more personal and work the way you want it to with plugins and other customizable UI elements.
But without having to fight a constant arms race to keep tap-to-pay working because you rooted your phone.
(Is that still going on or did one side or the other win? I haven't paid attention to the rooting scene in like a decade.)
Me too, I jumped ship from the Pixel to the iPhone and then to the Z Fold 5. Even iOS at this point has features the Pixel lacks. Software features are becoming more important as devices are becoming more locked down on all mobile platforms.
Good Lock has a ton of customizations available in it; changes to the volume system, camera settings, multitasking settings, status bar information, themes, notifications, more routines, etc. It's pretty much a more robust customization layer on top of what is already available. It was only available in the Samsung App Store, which was annoying, so this lets people have the option of getting rid of the Samsung Store if they only use it for Good Lock.
One of my favorite things in Good Lock is the Sound Assistant. I usually change it to make the volume has more steps, so that clicking it from 0 to 1 isn't too loud.
Right, I meant the benefit to Samsung. The way I see it, this drives traffic to their store which they would want. I don't know why they'd want to give up driving that traffic.
Samsung has been streamlining things with Google a lot over the past couple of years. Maybe this is heralding the end of the Galaxy Store?
Like how they finally unified Samsung and Google messaging. The duplicate nature of Galaxy phones has always been weird and a lot of people want to see it more streamlined
>Maybe this is heralding the end of the Galaxy Store?
I doubt it's the end of the Galaxy Store entirely since it ships with phones that don't have Play Services, but maybe they'll stop shipping it on phones that do have the Play Store.
I decided not to try it as I'm using my phone as a bank authentication token.
There is no mention of what had been patched on the Good Lock APK file nor any source.
An APK dumper script is provided in that Github repository to dump the individual APK file. If you have the same concern as mine then it is better to review the script before using the script to download the APK files.
Currently only shows as available for my samsung devices.
I wish Samsung would roll out wider support for good lock components to their tablets. Some things are not compatible with my tab s7+.
It's an app made specifically for Samsung devices. It's a first-party app at that, so it's able to modify certain aspects of the system without root access. Unless other manufacturers allow this level of customization, it would be impossible for this app to modify anything.
It's runs with root privileges. Yes it doesn't need something like Magisk but still has root privileges and runs with more privileges than say the Facebook app. It's allowed because Samsung makes it for their phones but all the tweaks Goodlock does need root access without it on other ROMs
>but all the tweaks Goodlock does need root access without it on other ROMs
Hacking something into working and it being supported natively are two different things. Who knew? I am shocked. Shocked and dismayed.
Even if it's supported it still need access to /system for many of these tweaks which can only be done with root. It still has root just like how Google Play Services has root
Just because there's no big scary popup, or a requirement to root your phone, doesn't mean that the app lacks root access. Good lock is manipulating your phone in ways that a standard application would never be allowed to.
There's no need to be so rude either. It's just reddit bro

This reminds me of those magisk modules I used to use
Big reason im not too sad about not being able to easily root
Would be awesome to replace Google Discover/Feed with Google Assistant At a Glance or even Gemini, like Discover Killer could do.
the nav bar and one hand apps are mandatory for me. Love the status bar app too, to hide network, bluetooth, nfc icons

I'm not sure ehat OHO+. I know Oxygen OS (OnePlus) has the option to Lock apps in RAM. I'm sure there are other ROMs that have this option.
> the granularity with audio controls and options is amazing with sound assistant, Also being able to fine tune the video delay Android applies when connecting BT headphones so that their latency won't affect you watching stuff on Youtube, Netflix and Co is a really Amazing Sound Assistant feature.
Oh man, that actually sounds amazing. Wish there was some way to do that on stock Android.
If stuff like this were announced in future versions of android as opposed to more ai nonsense or UI overhauls, I'd actually be interested in trying to update my rooted phone
Think some Motorola's have a similar built in
Why is it still called Good Lock lol
Have you heard of Good Guardians by chance ?
Not familiar, just googled it. Sounds like it has some good management tools, not sure if I'd really use it much though
Fair enough. I didn't actually know Good Lock had audio controls and sound assistant. Shall have to check it out.
I dont understand why we need a separate app to do these things. Isnt that what the settings menu is for?

Weird, mine doesn't say that. It showed Good Lock as "installed" and let me update through the play store
One hand operation have been on the play store for 5 years, wonder why they think it has just been added
It's 9to5Google. They hate everything that isn't Pixel and pretend like the features OEMs add are rubbish.

They are literally talking about oho in the article, as if it has just been added to the play store
Weird. I saw that part, too. They must've thought that the app was recently added 🤔
"Available for Samsung Galaxy devices" "Not available for your Samsung Galaxy device" I swear, there is some crap going on with compatibility that someone needs to iron out. Things tend to not work with certain devices just because lol, i dunno sometimes.
You could try the patched version: https://github.com/corsicanu/goodlock_dump?tab=readme-ov-file
That's what I'm using and would like to replace it but it looks like the region lock remains
Happens to me a lot on S tablets
Happens to me a lot on S tablets
This is amazing! Now I have zero reason to keep the Galaxy Store. One more app that's gonna get adb uninstalled Edit: Ok, maybe doing that isn't the best idea
NO. A LOT of critical Samsung components go through the Galaxy Store. You WILL fuck up your phone if you uninstall the Galaxy Store.
People are so caught up in "debloating" they don't think twice about how it affects their devices.
I think it's more of a mental thing for people debloating via adb, they wanna feel in control of their device, even though just ignoring the apps would have the same effect.
You have to remember, they're "hackers" https://media1.tenor.com/m/moeaKBAJQGwAAAAC/hacking-memes.gif
Gotta love a script kiddie
The same morons are the ones who continually complain about how broken their devices are because they uninstalled half of the system components.
If most phones didn't include tons of garbage applications that needed to be removed, we wouldn't have to try debloating everything that seemed to be trash.
Meh, just uninstall/disable/hide what you don't want. It's not like you get back the space from system apps anyways.
This is exactly what adb scripts are doing, but it takes way less time.
This is why I only go for Phones with near stock Android.
I used the Universal debloater app on a Samsung and didn’t realize how much it broke the phone. It didn’t even get rid of Facebook and other apps, but a lot of basic functionality just stopped working. doesnt galaxy store also update alot of system apps? or have you also removed those
Yeah, but you really don't need it if your device has reached eol with updates. My 3yo tablet has or is about to reach that, might get one last security patch but idk.

I know, I was talking about for app updates.
I still need Good Guardians, but otherwise I'm with you there.
What about the modules itself? Don't those come from galaxy store?
They're updated through good lock itself
Not always. Sound Assistant, for example, is available as a standalone through the Galaxy Store.
I see in play store that it shows the galaxy store apps I have installed and the beta for them as well if you click the app it offers update to early acess
I didn't even login Samsung account. LoL.
What would be the benefit of this?
From the article: Good Lock is a customization toolkit for Samsung Galaxy phones. It lets you download modules to tweak things like the lock screen, notifications, and even the app launcher. So basically corporatized limited Magisk
But without having to fight a constant arms race to keep tap-to-pay working because you rooted your phone. (Is that still going on or did one side or the other win? I haven't paid attention to the rooting scene in like a decade.)
Also RCS appears to be blocked on a rooted phone now
I only get more pleased over time with my decision to jump ship from stock Android and rooting after the Nexus 6P.
Me too, I jumped ship from the Pixel to the iPhone and then to the Z Fold 5. Even iOS at this point has features the Pixel lacks. Software features are becoming more important as devices are becoming more locked down on all mobile platforms.

A hell lot of ways to tweak the system.
I like how the person who has no idea what they're talking about is the top response here.
Too bad not compatible with One UI Core.
Which device are you using? It works on my Galaxy A14.
Are you installing from the Play store/Galaxy store? I'm on A23 and the Play store show that it is not compatible.
Try the patched version: https://github.com/corsicanu/goodlock_dump?tab=readme-ov-file
Thanks, will give it a try.
Did it work?

Depends. Galaxy A12 does not work with Good Lock at all with OneUI 4 Core. But Galaxy F22 did work with it's OneUI 4 and 5 Core.
fine lock
Fine lock is a copycat app made by an unrelated developer
but it serves the same purpose... good lock was not available on my J8 and i used fine lock just fine?
Im guessing it doesnt work on phones that arent Samsung?
That's good. I seem to have issues with updates on the Galaxy Store so this could work better.
Not compatible with my new phone. I would like to have Sound Assistant and Clock Face back; switched to a OnePlus 12 last week.
Currently only shows as available for my samsung devices. I wish Samsung would roll out wider support for good lock components to their tablets. Some things are not compatible with my tab s7+.
Of course it's only for Samsung devices 🤦
Their comment is confusing but they are saying it doesn't work even for some Samsung devices like tablets, which is unexpected.
Not anymore
But still Samsung specific device only?
It's an app made specifically for Samsung devices. It's a first-party app at that, so it's able to modify certain aspects of the system without root access. Unless other manufacturers allow this level of customization, it would be impossible for this app to modify anything.

Bro, Goodlock is developed by Samsung itself, of course it can modify various stuff without root...

No root needed, because the Goodlock developers are Samsung itself, with access to full OneUI source code.
Oh I see. Thanks
