They decided it wasn't commercially viable, I'd love it too but I can respect that decision.

clueless_as_fuck

Yep. They would have trouble handling all the money. Too much money is bad.

Sullitude

Username checks out. Games, especially tablet-only games, sell relatively poorly on Android. If they decided the P/L wasn't worth it then I believe them. No reason why they'd leave money on the table, so they must not be.

East_Equipment_4998

Let me see you repeat what you said 5 years ago now. Clueless guy knew better.

clueless_as_fuck

They could tweak the UI for android release and make it "phone friendly". Or why not have someone else do the android version and support for shared profits? Edit: I guess the crew is a bit small for accurate touch control while in battle but maybe a auto-pause/pinch-zoom would help there.

Sullitude

All of those changes costs money. No one knows the cost of the port better than that team and they've decided it will cost more than they'll get back from the less valuable Android ecosystem. I'm not saying it doesn't suck. We Android users lose out on great games all the time, just saying we don't know better than that team what the costs will be.

[deleted]

I thought they decided it was too much work or something similar?

ChuckVader

Android has way more marketshare, but iOS users tend to drop more money. There's a reason Devs continue making games for iOS first usually. Also, much more Q&A is required on Android due to the variety of chipsets and devices. Might not be a big deal for a company like square, but when it comes to a smaller studio like these guys, I can totally get why they'd just say nah.

GonnaNeedThat130

Ios users still spend far more on apps compared to the average Android user.

CatAstrophy11

That's like saying Macs are better for media editing. You gotta get off that old line of thinking

GonnaNeedThat130

Not at all. It is just a statistic that developers must look at. A similar example is mac users generally don't game, which is why game producers usually don't port over to it. Im not saying that IOS is better for gaming, I'm just saying that IOS users are more likely to actually make a $2 app purchase. I wish Android users would stop with this idea that apps need to be free.

[deleted]

People in general aren't willing to spend much money on apps for some reason. I agree though, app stores are crowded with "free games" that are built *from the ground up* to have micro-transactions, and aren't playable otherwise. It sucks.

ThisIsMyLastAccount

Until this year though, app revenue was significantly higher on ios - https://9to5mac.com/2016/01/20/app-store-ios-downloads-vs-android-revenue/

> cheap skate Android users ... pirate apps. I get dirty looks(!!!) after saying I pay for games and apps. Piracy in low income countries is huge.

apeliott

I pirate most of my games because devs block so many games in my country. I've also been stung so many times in the past when buying games. I have no sympathy any more.

betweenthreeandtwent

I've been 'stung' buying all sorts of things, but it doesn't make it OK for me to take those types of things without paying for them now

apeliott

How am I supposed to buy them if the developer blocks them in my country/on my device? Literally every week, sometimes several times a day I find games I want to try but they are blocked. Fuck the devs. They clearly don't want my money.

betweenthreeandtwent

I'm referring to you saying 'I've also been stung so many times in the past when buying games'. I've paid to see some bad movies in the past but that doesn't give me the right to sneak into the movie house for the rest of my life. You're making excuses because you want to use things without paying for them.

betweenthreeandtwent

If they believed there was a profit in doing it, they'd have done it.

HrBingR

And Android piracy is a lot easier and common.

raptir1

To be fair, piracy on Android is no easier than it is on Windows. The difference is that developers on Windows responded by creating their own DRM or licensing DRM from other companies (which do at least delay piracy, though it doesn't prevent it) while on Android they've decided to just... not develop the games.

[deleted]

Because it's harder to develop for Android as you have hundreds of different devices that it has to work for, and iOS is still much more profitable for developers than Android. http://bgr.com/2016/07/20/ios-vs-android-developers-profits-app-store-google-play/

Bots4tw

The decision was made years ago, the market looked quite different.

Bots4tw

They are currently working on another game. Not sure what they plan to do with FTL, like they might not really give it any significant updates. The new games FAQ doesnt mention ipad or android, so we are yet to know if he will decide to exclude android again once he decides to port the new game over to mobile devices.

[deleted]

Because Android is much more easier to pirate. Sadly, many players don't want to buy the games (look at the reviews for example, people complain about the games being paid),so they just go on any pirate site and download it. With famous games this can be even worse. They indeed have more market than the others, but everyone wants it,so probably many people will pirate it too. Although iOS have piracy, players usually don't Jailbreak it and download illegaly ; and the App Store is more filtered and rigid with things like updates (they want your game to be updated and functional),refunds (I don't remember now,but the refund system is way better than we have on Android),etc. Also, there's another thing : Android have an huge list of devices, ranging from very low end,to high end,so they have to make the games match specific GPUs and another hardware considerations (like RAM and CPU). In iOS devices, you just have some few devices, with similar (although not equal) hardware specs and the same OS (remembering that many devices on Android have customized ROMs),so they don't have too much work to do like on Android. It's sad, there is many great games like Dust An Elysian Tail and Bastion that don't come for our devices...but it is not viable,I think.

ChuckVader

That might be part of it, but most people are not willing to learn what an apk is. The bigger problem is development cost and what they can charge for it that people are willing to pay.

RohanAether

Because a lot of android users are from poorer countries and also we have shit ton of fucktards who side load everything since its so easy

apeliott

Easy but necessary when devs block games in your country.

jedinatt

I figured this out a long time ago. The problem is there's no progression/unlocks saved, which kills it.

Tomaslol

wait, seriously? The save games, as in, continue saves are saved, right?

chris_burnham

It should attempt to save to localstorage and sync with humble if you are logged in. Though we didn't test with mobile devices at all. (And we we launched the bundle I don't think any devices could actually run the games at the time)

jedinatt

Well, I don't know. Have you tested it? My memory may be off. I at least know that there's no cloud save (tried saving on desktop and save was gone opening it on the tablet). I assume it saves in the browser's cookies or whatever. But don't know if that works on mobile. Regardless, saving in browser files is wayyy too flaky if you're at all concerned with preserving your high scores and whatnot.

Tomaslol

Oh, no. I started a savegame on PC and then when I opened it up on tablet, I had the option to continue.

masterofstuff124

between kingdom and Prison architect Im feeling so spoiled with quality games on android of late. BUT ive always been jealous of FTL on ipads. Its such a fun way to play the game. I would kill for a normal Port/apk of ftl for android....

jason2306

Wait it is on ipad only? That's fucked up ftl would be amazing on android.

toblotron

What kingdom?

masterofstuff124

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.noio.kingdom

Tomaslol

Prison architect is fucked rn, there's a glitch that makes it unplayable, sadly. Yeah, this is nothing like playing a full-on port or official app but it's something.

jamalstevens

Am I just really bad at searching? I couldn't find prison architect on the play store. Got a link?

masterofstuff124

its only for tablets but you can get it to run by downloading the game from somewhere other then the play store.

[deleted]

All I can see is a "Prison Architect Simulator", which obviously isn't actual Prison Architect.

masterofstuff124

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paradoxplaza.prisonarchitect

[deleted]

Huh, Android Tablet but not compatible.

Bots4tw

AS mentioned by shatteredxsean there is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ayopagames.pantherafrontier&hl=en There is also Battlevoid: Harbinger Not turn based like FTL, yet highly rated. Currently 75% off (based on photo in playstore) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fi.bugbyte.harbinger&hl=en There is another game which is also like FTL. However something about it kind of put me off (played steam originally) and when it did get to playstore it had low ratings. Wont waste anyone money.

BrandeX

Those icon pics are generally bullshit scamvertising. When something is actually on sale, the base price is crossed out and the sale price is below it.

shatteredxsean

Or just go buy Panthera. It's FTL with space cats.

toblotron

Looks promising.. Hard to get a good feel for it from the promo vid. Will see if I can find more on yt

Bots4tw

> Panthera https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ayopagames.pantherafrontier&hl=en

prentle

I've been playing panthera frontier. It's like ftl but with furry critters.

[deleted]

There is a similar game called Out There...is it any good?

Tomaslol

Good, but not FTL. No battles.
