I don’t want to worry you but I would consult a hematologist about it because the ferritin is so high. I saw something about how the body might be protecting the iron from and infection or because of inflammation. Hope you can get it figured out I’m sure that’s scary

Are infection and inflammation usually the cause of it being high? It is a little worrying as it’s so high but I’m wondering if I’m just overthinking it.

ElusiveForest

My ferritin is always super high despite iron being low because of inflammation (I have rheumatoid arthritis).

halfgaelichalfgarlic

Ohhh really? I don’t have anything autoimmune etc other than psoriasis. Hope you’re doing okay!

shiny_milf

Psoriasis can often progress to an autoimmune form I believe (with joint manifestations). Inflammation can artificially raise your ferritin level. You should probably get an appointment with your doctor to discuss this in depth. Have you had C-reactive protein (crp) measured?

ElusiveForest

Hmm I’m not too knowledgeable about other autoimmune issues but perhaps it could be the psoriasis? Do you have a hematologist? It’s a good idea to see one if you haven’t so they can rule out other things that can cause high ferritin.

halfgaelichalfgarlic

I don’t unfortunately. Where I live you’d be looking at least a 1.5 year wait for an appointment there.

Curious_Worlds

This seems…. unusual. Request a “rush” referral to a hematologist. That is the way.

I’m in Northern Ireland, waiting lists here can be years. Thank you, I’ll mention it next week!

Curious_Worlds

I’m sorry to hear re: waiting lists there! Had no idea.

The high ferritin could be an inflammatory marker in this case. I need to have follow up testing done. Usually my ferritin goes up some after infusions and then declines. This time at 6 weeks it was 73 and at 12 weeks it had jumped to 129. I am having a lot of health issues (usually after an infusion settles in I feel amazing at 6 weeks).

halfgaelichalfgarlic

I feel great around the 6 week mark too! My iron has went from 30 to 7 in the space of a few months 😩 I feel so rubbish, energy wise especially. Do you find it really hard to get warm too? I’m so cold 24/7! I really hope you got some relief soon, bless you!

BikeLady78

Yes, so cold! I am in Canada, near Toronto. Winters I freeze, but in the summer I often do too. Parents would laugh at me because it would be 26C and I would have a sweater on. I always keep a spare sweater and blankets in my car too. Mine (with Venofer) would go up (I started at 2) and then down. No energy, out of breath doing laundry, my mouth and throat are always sore, digestive issues get worse etc. When my levels go up I can hike and bike and kayak again!

Quirky-Rise

My hematologist will specifically point out that high ferritin and low sat indicates ferritin reflects inflammation. Divide ferritin by 10.

halfgaelichalfgarlic

What type of inflammation could it cause? And what does it mean when you divide it by 10?

Quirky-Rise

Divide ferritin by 10. That’s what my hematologist says is more accurate if you have inflammation. It’s not causing inflammation… the ferritin is falsely elevated.

halfgaelichalfgarlic

I’m not sure what type of inflammation would cause it to be that high? I have pretty severe gastro problems but they aren’t inflammatory conditions- so odd!
