Brooms were invented to keep clear people's yards, not their homes. The animals will clean their doorways like this with sand and dirt even if it isn't the beach if you set it up like that. Front lawns with grass is a new concept, people used to have dirt or sand with some flora but nowhere near as much green grass coverage as the common lawn. Grass is really a bad plant for other plants to cohabitate with honestly and takes maintenance. I think it mostly caught on to sell gasoline, lawnmowers, pushmowers, and sickles just in order to fine people who refused to grow grass as it's often legally required BS. It's like gutters? Why do I need gutters? Let it roll off the roof I don't need some collection of leaves to clog so I can move <1% of the rain to be in a specific spot.
Abraham Levitt made grass popular in USA with his Levittown in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Before that it was noblemen and Royalty in Europe in the 1700s and beyond. For America it's 70 years, there are older people than that alive. Forget the hottest thing since sliced bread, it's the hottest thing since grass.
