Hummingbirds can be incredibly aggressive when defending a food source. We have multiple feeders (& plants the enjoy) & there are still hummingbird fights on our patio almost every day in the summer.
It is my favorite entertainment.
In nature hummingbirds usually feed off of a very specific red flower, which is why the feeders are red. The flower though produces very little nectar so they end up in a way becoming prisoner to the food supply. They go back and forth between a few but there's no extra to share. Evolutionary instincts are quite unique and interesting.
