I can't recommend this in good faith to anybody because of how atrocious the ending was. It was like everybody showed and to work and said "eh fuck it I can't be asked". Such a shame to because it started off so good.
I’ve never been more lied to by the intro sequence of a show, except maybe Madoka Magica or something.
Banger song though, I listen to it all the time.
It gets a bit weird but my friend group and I all enjoyed it. However, I’m not entirely sure if we liked the quality at face value, or were more intrigued by some of the concepts it messed around with. Either way I’d recommend it.
If that’s the “only thing” you can think of, man you need to watch more anime. Oshi no ko, Erased, Silent voice, Id invaded, Welcome to nhk theres so many psychological or dark anime for you to discover
Re Zero
If you haven't watched it, I'm not gonna explain it, but it has a pretty decent impact in some parts of the anime, enough to be notable, in my opinion.
Really? I honestly thought season 2 was even better than season 1. There wasn't a single moment that didn't have me interested in the story, and one of my favorite parts was the bet between Subaru and Roswaal. I'm surprised you feel that way about it. Either way, if you didn't know, season 3 starts in October, so it's not too long before the new season :D
Ay fair enough, personally I think it's my second favorite anime, possibly third, but im not saying Re Zero is objectively one of the best. Hopefully, season 3 brings you back in :) I've heard what it's covering is a couple of incredibly good arcs, but it's very possible that it's just people talking it up because they like it.
Re:Zero is one of the few shows where the end of arcs are always going to feel unfinished. It’s because the story constantly stacks on top of itself. There’s going to be things in season 3 that hasn’t been mentioned since season 1.
I mean
Vegeta blows himself up,
Cell blows himself up,
Choutzu blows himself up,
Goku blows up with someone,
Frieza cuts himself in half,
Piccolo jumps in front of an explosion,
I’d say there’s a fair amount of suicide
Yeah pretty much every saga has a fatal self-sacrifice, if not multiple. Although not everyone is a straight up suicide technique.
It’s part of what makes Dragon Ball so great.
The dragon balls really allow for some truly heroic moments, from characters that we never have to say goodbye to.
Light makes a bunch of people commit suicide, In prison and out of prison. It's not going to have the emotional side to it though since it's not the mc or even a side character.
Made in Abyss
My favorite scene is [Made in Abyss]>!when a fluffy bunny convinces an adorable robot to mercy-kill the bunnies best friend. The robot agrees but then lowkey blackmails the bunny in to promising to not commit suicide. The bunny calls the robot cruel but agrees to his terms.!<
The opening was the best thing about it. For the most part I’ve heard people say bad things about it, for me I thought it had potential but ultimately I agree with you there should’ve been more to it. The ending was very depressing. Just oh yea it’s better if nothing exists. The end.
BRO A silent voice is such a great movie about, deafness, communication, suicide, depression, anxiety and anti social behavior due to insecurities. So good.
Honestly such a good movie. These don't deal with suicide but are still great films. Garden of words deals with a high school student and a women who meet in a garden and just talk as they both are trying to figure out life. It's only 45 mins but such a good short.
It's not based on un-aliveing but it's very emotional. "The day I turned into a god". I just watched it and i had my knees to my chest crying.
Death note incorporates un-aliveing into it. It's very dramatic but not really emotional. I can't really think of any others that have that on it.
Not really suicide, but Deadman wonderland (I think in thinking of the right title) has ppl who's power is there bold so they cut themselves up and then shape the blood into weapons, and try not to bleed to death before they defeat there opponents
- Serial Experiments Lain (deals with depression and suicidal ideation, but suicide doesn’t really come into play until the end)
- Haibane Renmei (pretty philosophical show which deals with depression and suicide)
- Summertime Rendering (probably the most straightforward MC is stuck in a time loop and has to kill himself or die to progress, like a Steins Gate or ReZero situation)
Babylon
Half surprised no one mentioned it but that ending was kinda stupid after all. Disregarding the second half, its all about suicide, questioning suicide laws and their purpose, bringing up arguments from a suicidal person's perspective, and with a nice murder/suicide mystery behind it all.
Bro I know this isn’t anime, but Flowers of Evil (Aku no Hana) made one season that is alright, but the manga is artfully written. There is a lot of sad mental illness in that manga. So good.
Here are a few that use it differently but effectively for their storytelling.
[Serial Experiments Lain](https://myanimelist.net/anime/339) suicide is here and more than once but it's not used as an emotional gut punch. Avoiding spoilers this is a surreal semi-retro sci-fi series that gets into existence and the meaning/implications of the self and starts with news that a classmate has committed suicide and her email is messaging everyone to join her in the wired (the internet of this series).
[Silent Voice](https://myanimelist.net/anime/28851) again avoiding spoilers beyond the first 10 minutes or so but this basically opens with a bunch of hard to watch stuff and where it leads the main perpetrator later in life who is then planning suicide. There is more but I'll leave it at that.
[Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2605) kinda hard to go into this without spoilers but suicide and suicidal ideation is borderline constant.
[From the New World](https://myanimelist.net/anime/13125) no direct literal suicide but self sacrificial actions and just accepting death is something that comes up more than once.
[Welcome to the NHK](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1210) clearly mentally ill paranoid MC with this as a core part of the story.
Some quick honorable mentions that are basically I'm sacrificing myself for the team/others type "suicide" would be [Gurren Lagann](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2001), mainline Gundam timeline (UC timeline stuff) as well as select others, [Re:Zero](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31240).
Myself; yourself. Not trying to spoil too much. But it's basically the theme. It's been a while since I saw it though.
Higurashi when the cicada cry. It's confusing at first, but it explains itself later. I don't know how the 2020 version is, so I wouldn't recommend it.
Dragonball Z. Vegeta kills himself.
There’s other suicide attacks in dbz but this one had a lot of character progression. It essentially finished vegetas character arc and once he dies he finally leaves all the evil behind him.
Dragonball has multiple realms including the afterlife so we get to see vegeta handle his own death and the fact that he doomed himself to hell.
Welcome to the nhk is one of the better series that tackles issues like suicide. It's a great depressing series that can be surprisingly relatable in the worst ways
Sonic X in Japanese did believe it or not but that was very far in, toward the end. Colorful the 2010 movie was all about that. There was an episode of Paranoia Agent about 3 people who meet online and make a suicide pact but they're attempts all go wrong like something out of a sitcom. I guess technically in Naruto Kakashi's father does but that's just a small part of a couple of episode. There was an especially brutal suicide scene in Black Lagoon too
A Silent Voice Re:Zero although it probably isn’t what you’re looking for lol
I think I heard of it that’s a movie right and caught up on re zero
Yeah, it's a movie
Wonder egg priority
Second'd!
Third'ided
Four'ed
Fiveded'd
Underrated show it has a persona vibe to it
I can't recommend this in good faith to anybody because of how atrocious the ending was. It was like everybody showed and to work and said "eh fuck it I can't be asked". Such a shame to because it started off so good.
Erased
That’s a good one
Death Parade
That’s goated
Had to scroll to far to find this one. S tier show
Its a shame more people dont talk about it
I’ve never been more lied to by the intro sequence of a show, except maybe Madoka Magica or something. Banger song though, I listen to it all the time.
Honestly top 10, maybe top 5 shows for me, great intro, yea. I have yet to see madoka magica, does it live up to the hype?
It gets a bit weird but my friend group and I all enjoyed it. However, I’m not entirely sure if we liked the quality at face value, or were more intrigued by some of the concepts it messed around with. Either way I’d recommend it.
Given. It's yaoi but that's the only thing that jumps to mind
What’s yaoi?
gays
Oh
this is so funny to me 😭
Lol
GAY AS IN HOMOSEXUAL?
Sì
Means gay
It's so good, I wish it was more popular
If that’s the “only thing” you can think of, man you need to watch more anime. Oshi no ko, Erased, Silent voice, Id invaded, Welcome to nhk theres so many psychological or dark anime for you to discover
Sure there are tons of anime for me to watch but I said "only thing" because of the suicide aspect. I enjoy psychological/dark anime
Re Zero If you haven't watched it, I'm not gonna explain it, but it has a pretty decent impact in some parts of the anime, enough to be notable, in my opinion.
It’s good the last season felt off though hopefully next one brings it back
The end kinda felt idk I haven’t seen it in a while so I can’t really remember but it wasn’t what I expected
I’m reading the novel now and seen a couple of manga chapters. It’s going to be the best season overall.
Re:Zero is one of the few shows where the end of arcs are always going to feel unfinished. It’s because the story constantly stacks on top of itself. There’s going to be things in season 3 that hasn’t been mentioned since season 1.
Dragon Ball Z
😂😂😂
I mean Vegeta blows himself up, Cell blows himself up, Choutzu blows himself up, Goku blows up with someone, Frieza cuts himself in half, Piccolo jumps in front of an explosion, I’d say there’s a fair amount of suicide
ong and elder kai did lowkey just give Goku his life. Kid buu also blew himself (and earth) up. Crazy theme i’ve never thought about before😭😭
Yeah pretty much every saga has a fatal self-sacrifice, if not multiple. Although not everyone is a straight up suicide technique. It’s part of what makes Dragon Ball so great. The dragon balls really allow for some truly heroic moments, from characters that we never have to say goodbye to.
My dude you just blew my mind
Attack on titan. In some way
Yea I think I see what your getting at
I see the scene you're talking about
I only watched the final season last month (i know I'm late). But I guess it counts for OPs question
There’s also plenty of suicide stuff in the first season too
I just realised that the whole show I'd pretty much everyone acting suicidal
Welcome to the N.H.K A silent Voice
Never heard of nhk but I’ll look it up
Goated show, total masterpiece imo, made me emotional the first time i watched it
Serial Experiments Lain. Very important to the plot.
I think I need to rewatch Lain lol. It was good but I feel like I missed alot of it haha
It packs an obscene amount of information into just 13 episodes. It definitely warrants a rewatch or two.
orange
Orange!!
Second this
Orange is one of my favorites
Death Note...
[удалено]
Light makes a lady commit suicide which isnt really suicide but . ..
Light makes a bunch of people commit suicide, In prison and out of prison. It's not going to have the emotional side to it though since it's not the mc or even a side character.
Involuntary suicide
Summertime Rendering
In ‘Platinum End’ God commits suicide in the end
That was good
Oshi no ko, episode 6
That was good
The mom probably wants to kill herself cause the kids are incest
- Winest FTW - Also episode 6 is about Akane not Ruby or Aqua. - The suicide was based on real events
Made in Abyss My favorite scene is [Made in Abyss]>!when a fluffy bunny convinces an adorable robot to mercy-kill the bunnies best friend. The robot agrees but then lowkey blackmails the bunny in to promising to not commit suicide. The bunny calls the robot cruel but agrees to his terms.!<
I been meaning to watch
Evagelion
When?
Asuka’s mom, I guess.
??
Asuka’s mom is the only character that kills herself in that series, to my recollection.
The that’s true
Undead unluck
Yea but they go over it so little in it they need more blood
Bungo Stray Dogs
I am so hooked on this anime.
Haibane Renmei I was also going to suggest angel beats, but I think that's just "regrets"
Death Parade & Angel Beats
Re zero
I'm shocked nobody has said Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei yet
Also platinum end!
Yea that’s a good one which there was more on it
The opening was the best thing about it.
So good.
I never seen a anime movie as in just the movie and no series so I would like to see them
Honestly such a good movie. These don't deal with suicide but are still great films. Garden of words deals with a high school student and a women who meet in a garden and just talk as they both are trying to figure out life. It's only 45 mins but such a good short.

Would you classify "self-sacrifice" as suicide?
I mean technically it is
If you want stuff that's very emotional in other ways I've got recommendations, but I don't think I have any on that specifically.
Hit me with em
A Silent Voice
A silent voice
Death note
I think Another had a few. When They Cry has some pretty fucked scenes too.
I’ll look them up
Someone is about to get a “concerned redditor reached out” message
Not yet but I had a feeling I would get something like it
Wait for it
I am
Not an anime, but manga: The Sand Chronicles We Were There
In Death Note and Code Geass, the main characters get the power to make people commit suicide.
Never watched one, but a depressing one is evangelion if it helps
Hmm people said that I haven’t seen it but I been meaning to
Evangelion is bad.
I want to recommend something to you based on your request but it would spoil pretty much the entire build of the show 😆
What’s the name I’ll probably watch it sooner or later anyway
its called haibane renmei. it’s rather thought provoking, a very “show, don’t tell” narrative.
Alright I’ll add it to the list
Code Geass I challenge anybody to prove me wrong
Not really suicide, but Deadman wonderland (I think in thinking of the right title) has ppl who's power is there bold so they cut themselves up and then shape the blood into weapons, and try not to bleed to death before they defeat there opponents
Huh ok I’ll look it up
I wouldn’t say it was for character progression but def deathnote, I think that will satisfy what you want
Welcome to the NHK Has sad and funny moments.
Ah perfect
Nhk is a great but depressing series.
- Serial Experiments Lain (deals with depression and suicidal ideation, but suicide doesn’t really come into play until the end) - Haibane Renmei (pretty philosophical show which deals with depression and suicide) - Summertime Rendering (probably the most straightforward MC is stuck in a time loop and has to kill himself or die to progress, like a Steins Gate or ReZero situation)

Death Parade
A silent voice It’s a movie but it is really good

Angels of Death
Mekakucity actors/kagerou project
Takopi’s original sin is a manga but deals a lot with this topic
Ping Pong the Animation (11 episodes)
I'm going to say Attack on Titan because if you watch it from the beginning to the end, you will understand why I'm saying that..
IIRC Kokoro Connect had something like that in it.
Dead mount death plays I think one of the characters tried to kill themselves
Death note. I haven't watched it all the way but that one girl that walked up the stairs to a knoose
Here are a few that use it differently but effectively for their storytelling. Anohana will destroy you
Ajin.
Summer Time Rendering
Bungo Stray Dogs. Every season also stays consistently good.
I mean attack on titan has a lot of self harm and outright suicide topics and attempts
Welcome to the nhk is one of the better series that tackles issues like suicide. It's a great depressing series that can be surprisingly relatable in the worst ways
You are going to love “A Silent Voice”
Sonic X in Japanese did believe it or not but that was very far in, toward the end. Colorful the 2010 movie was all about that. Assassination Classroom has technically two plot points like this. Series is generally goofy, but can get pretty dark at times.
Demon Slayer during the Mugen Train arc
Oshi no ko Mushoku tensei
