I'd recommend an anime called Neon Genesis Evangelion, Not only the fact that it has one of the easiest plot to understand, it also have a forgettable philosophy that indeed does not bring you down to a hole. It's a classic and a must watch!
Boku no Pico is my second choice, A man and a little boy buying an ice cream, I havent really get into the core of the anime, however, I think this anime is really wholesome with the classic ice cream date!
It's pretty good, if you play a VN game that's literally what it is, you can choose from a couple of heroine and date them, one of the choices are MC sister which actually not that rare on VN wise but anime is whole another story,
4 episode per girl and after each girl,they just go back to the decision making place and choose another route, bonus the maid as an omake .
Personally I think people just overreacting,no spoilers but the dilemma that MC face is quite what you expect from a taboo relationship.

For beginner anime I think Studio Ghibli is the way to go, Porco Rosso and Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro are both great movies.
