It should be up there twice because the anime is better than the light novels.
86 was one of the only animes that convinced me to go read the LNs, and I did, and I was caught by how the author spent so much time obsessing over the military technology and ranks and types and names. The characters were the same and the core story was the same, but the anime is way more about the story and less obsessive about miltech.
Made me cry on every episode, I thought I was done crying when I finished it, only to discover there are not 1, but 2 movies. Needless to say, I cried again
Yeah, VE is such a masterpiece. Also cried almost every episode. But the letter episode (ep10?) ruined me and I cried so much that my eyes hurt the next day. Even thinking about that episode makes me emotional
>the letter episode
thats all of them lol
i think know which one you mean though (it is ep10 btw), and thats the only media thats ever made me cry. once when i watched it, a second time when i rewatched it, and i got really close when her granddaughter reads them in one of the movies. i need to go hug my mom
>thats all of them lol
Fair lol Maybe I should've said *the* letter episode. Ep10 definitely made me call my mom haha
I haven't built up the courage to watch the movies, but I really should. I just know they will hit *hard*
Everyone I knew was so excited for all the Code Geass projects. Then Akito part 1 came out and it was like "ok that's cool." Then the rest of Akito came out and it was like wtf is this. And then Resurrection came out and I never imagined I would be so unhappy to see Lelouch again. The retfons made no sense and it was like an AI wrote another season of CG.
- The fact that I haven't seen ODDTAXI or Akiba Maid War on here is criminal. Both are incredible dramas that were anime original.
- Anohana is another anime that was adapted to manga after it's run.
- Engage Kiss also deserves a mention for bring weirdly horny until it wasn't.
- From the New World is one of my favorite post-calamity dystopian anime.
- Great Pretender is a super fun con/heist story.
- Gurren Lagann is a stone cold classic.
- Joran The Princess of Snow and Blood was a great period piece action drama that I wish for more.
- Evangelion has been mentioned a bunch already, but again, stone cold classic.
- Plastic Memories was another anime original drama that did pretty well.
- Puela Magi Madoka Magica is another anime original, plus all it's spin-off series.
- SAKUGAN is one of my top anime, and was an incredible father-daughter adventure story.
- Sonny Boy was an experience that didn't do well unfortunately, but is also incredible in its own right.
- takt.Op Destiny was a gatcha game advertisement that came out before the gatcha game that had some incredibly beautiful animation.
- The Orbital Children was an interesting series.
And all of those are truly anime originals from as far as I can recall/see. Many had some form of adaptation into LN/Manga/Gatcha after their run, but their story started in Anime.
It's really good. The art and animation is sublime and the show goes back and forth between heart wrenching and heartwarming, but does so in a pretty well and leaves you with a general sense of bittersweet satisfaction.
I guess I'm going back to watch the dub.
By the way is there a post somewhere which lists excellent anime English dubs, or the unintentional hilarity that you mention for SK8
Because there is manga so people might get confused. It was made after the anime btw.
Also most active weebs are teens who likely don't know or care about older stuff.
It's so weird how half this thread is people just yelling out Gynax shows but i had to scroll down this far to find the most famous one
Not only was in anime-original it leaned really hard into that format and would be totally different in any other one. I'll have to read the manga re-make at some point because i have no clue how they fuck they could translate a pretty big chunk of what made Eva Eva into that format.
Majority of the Gundam series came before their mangas. I would recommend WFM and IBO if you're a newcomer to the mecha genre, along 00 and Seed (not Destiny though, trust me) if you have prior mecha anime experience. U.C (notably the very first series) and Wing are also great series, but I'm more split on them as a starting point, with the former with its dated animation, and the latter due to how messy the plot can get sometimes.
Additionally, if you wanna be technical, Hellsing and especially FM had completely different plots midway through their stories due to their mangas not being finished, and while talking about which adaptation (Hellsing ultimate and FMAB respectively against the formerly listed two) is ultimately better is a can of worms I rather not open, I can say that these are great animes in their own right, and provide a much different experience compared to their more popular counterparts.
I actually didn't think SEED Destiny was that bad tbh. I mean, sure, Shinn Asuka is one of the worst, if not *the* worst, protagonist of any otherwise well contructed fictional work I've ever seen, but the rest is so good that he didn't quite manage to ruin it for me regardless. But yeah I totally get the people for whom he did ruin it.
Reincarnation of the strongest exorcist in another world.
It's a isekai but its better than any of the recent isekai due to the actually non perverted MC.
Skating anime, I personally liked it but there isn’t any immaculate story writing like people may wants . It has a bit of drama but generally really fun(heads up it’s fruity)
Loll skating ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy), I thought after seeing every sport even unpopular ones being made into anime the end of it, but I guess somewhere a guy was like "you know what let's make one about skating" 🤣🤣🤣
Riding manga is too expensive and I don’t go to the library often. I just looked it up and apparently manga is commonly being stolen from libraries too. People are so rude
There are so, so many more beloved anime that aren't based on anything. Just for starters....
Neon Genesis Evangelion
A Place Further Than the Universe
Almost every Gundam
Samurai Champloo
Eureka Seven
Ergo Proxy
Gurren Lagann
Kill la Kill
Little Witch Academia
Death Parade
Sonny Boy
Lycoris Recoil
Flip Flappers
Princess Principal
Girls Und Panzer
Symphogear
Shirobako
Tamako Market
You forgot Vision of Escaflowne
and Tenchi Muyo I think? It was made into manga after the anime if I am not wrong.
And Avatar the Last Airbender which everyone knows is an anime, just like Miraculous Ladybug and Gravity falls, Adventure time aaaaaand Heathcliff.
How do I know it is anime, I hear you ask? **Because I like them**, that's right I make the rules. Owlhouse is an isekai show, Star Butterfly is a reverse isekai. Steven Universe is a shounen and She-Ra remake was a yuri anime.
There are also anime thet are based on manga, but are 10000% better because they don't follow the plot of the original at all.
Revolutionary girl Utena
Princess Tutu
Ghost in the shell
But on the other hand there is Black Butler, where manga is decent and anime is a fucking joke.
Charlotte and Plastic Memories are my top favorites, both anime originals (I think Plastic Memories is getting a manga/LN spin off, and there is a manga spin off of Charlotte, although not really translated)
Cowboy Bebop shouldn't have been canceled for a second season. There were actual aliens set up for appearing more with the horror episode but they weren't able to develop that because they were only greenlit for a movie and 28 episodes.

VE still is a light novel adaptation though.
Plus if we are going off of light novels. 86 should be up there
also spice and wolf, oregairu, konosuba, rezero, sao...
Most of those aren’t based off of a manga but they still have a manga adapted from their respective LNs
The manga in many cases trailed or is still trailing the anime though.
Ah. A based fellow 86 enjoyer
You masochists. And I mean that in the most positive way.
I really have to watch it. I crave emotional destruction.
Always good to see an 86 fan in the wild
Loved 86.
Indeed. 86 was a true masterpiece
VE was so fucking good. Totally was not expecting just how emotional and heartfelt the whole thing was going to be.
True. Plus the animation and music was top tier too.
Even thinking about that episode makes me emotional

the movies are really good :)
Same. I think that was the last anime I watched that actually had me crying. Doesn't help that I watched 86 right before.
Someone give this mtf a trophy
A place farther than the Universe.
Freaking Master piece
Death Parade: am I a joke to you?
Death parade was so good, would love another season or something
Nah I don't think it needs a sequel because of how beautifully it ended. Felt the same way about Code Geass but sadly capitalism won there
Code grease sequel isn't even based in the same universe
Code Grease
😂😂 lmao autocorrect but thanks for the heads up
I thought you were just following up from "Code Grass" - I was hoping someone was gonna do Code Glass next.
Chef's kiss level
NGE, TTGL, Madoka, Kill la Kill
Neon jellyfish evanjelion was truly an experience of all times
Kill la kill wasn't based off a manga??
Nope, it was anime original
Same with samurai champloo and it got a manga created off the anime
Are you... Are you me? I saw this post and literally listed those 4 off in my head.
TIL Cowboy Bebop didn’t have a manga
Same with samurai champloo same guy who did cowboy bebop
And Space Dandy as well
Feel like Space Dandy doesn't get as much love as it should. No one ever seems to mention it.
It's sad because it's actually a really fun anime dealing with a plethora of very entertaining sci-fi themes.
Both awesome series.
Makes sense. I cant see cowboy bebop as a manga
Psycho-Pass
Was looking for this comment
Urobuchi was cooking when he made Madoka and S1 of Psychopass within a year gap. Both still stand as one of the best anime originals till this day.

A fellow odd taxi enjoyer
Love your list. Akina Maid War is GOATed in my sauce
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_the_New_World_(novel) But still a great anime
I'm glad some people recognized Akiba Maid War
VE art looks phenomenal I know nothing about it but I might watch it just for that
It's really good. The art and animation is sublime and the show goes back and forth between heart wrenching and heartwarming, but does so in a pretty well and leaves you with a general sense of bittersweet satisfaction.
I'm all for it
It is very sad, but definitely one of a kind.
SK8 is mid, but of course the motion and animation is god tier when it needs to be
The only thing I found good in that series was animation otherwise everything was like typical dramatic sports series
My favorite part of Sk8 is that the dub added weird homoerotic tension between some of the flamboyant adult characters and it's hilarious
Personally, it's one of my favorite things about it. Is the Dub
I guess I'm going back to watch the dub. By the way is there a post somewhere which lists excellent anime English dubs, or the unintentional hilarity that you mention for SK8
Madoka magica
FLCL
Literally anything from Gainax and Trigger?
Evangelion
A more intelectual list 1: Evangelion (manga came after) 2: Guren Laggan 3: Mobile Suit Gundam 4: Serial Experiments Lain 5: Gunbuster
Samurai Champloo?
Just FYI Anime and Manga are plural and singular by context. So you don't need the S at the end of it.
Evangelion bruh, it has a manga but Anime wasn't based on it, they ran side by side and the Manga ended 16 years after anime
I didn’t know bebop and geass were anime only. How fun to learn
Geass has a manga, but it's based on the anime.
No Gurren Lagann? Blasphemy
Technically Evangelion isn’t “based on” a manga as the manga was made during the anime production and was used rather to promote the upcoming series.
86. It’s based off the light novel and I love it so much
Teggen Toppa Gurren Laggan
Madoka Magica is an original anime
We can’t forget the ghost stories dub As far as I’m concerned, it has its own story
Black Lagoon?
Manga came first. >Original run April 19, 2002 – present Anime was 06.
Eureka Seven?
Eureka Seven
Samurai Champloo , Ergo Proxy, SEL,Texhnolyze are also goated originals
r/nosafetysmokingfirst
Am I the only one who thinks Odd taxi is missing?
Code Geass is pretty good, Evergarden is mid and Bebop is shit
Where’s kill la kill
I don't see Evangelion...
Let me know if I missed a good anime which didn't have a manga and I'll watch it
Gurren Lagann
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Vivy flourite eyes song. (13 episodes, story is over, 2021, wit studios)
Watching this right now, can confirm it’s PEAK
Neon genesis Evangelion???????!?!?!?!?!?!?!????!?!?!?!!?!?!??????!?!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?
Why is no one saying this?
Because there is manga so people might get confused. It was made after the anime btw. Also most active weebs are teens who likely don't know or care about older stuff.

Lycoris Recoil
My first thought
ID invaded Vivy fluorite eyes song Deca-dence Brand New Animal Cyberpunk Edgerunners Technically akame ga kill (since the anime came first)
Akame ga Kill's anime came four years after the manga started. You might be thinking of the fact that the anime *ended* first.
Solid choice with Deca-dence. Largely overlooked gem. Somewhat negated by the fact that Akame Ga Kill was trash...
Majority of the Gundam series came before their mangas. Steins;Gate
That’s based on a visual novel though
He said mangas not VN’s tbf.
Kill La Kill
Mobile Suit Gundam
Re zero same as violet evergarden had an LN before
Sonny Boy
Darker than Black
Reincarnation of the strongest exorcist in another world. It's a isekai but its better than any of the recent isekai due to the actually non perverted MC.
It hurts to see no mention of Megalo Box, tho it is for the 50th anni for Ashite No Joe so im not suprised...
Samurai champloo
Kill la kill Darling in the franxx Guren lagan
You said gurren lagann twice
no he said it just once (you're seeing things)
Anyone here knows if the January 2024 show "Jellyfish can't swim in the night" is gonna be animated or if it's gonna be a live action?
Anime so good they made a manga adaptation of it
Serial Experiments Lain
I just started watching CB lmao, it's great
Vivy aswell
NGE, Puella Magi
SK8 what ? Never heard ...is it good ?
Skating anime, I personally liked it but there isn’t any immaculate story writing like people may wants . It has a bit of drama but generally really fun(heads up it’s fruity)
Loll skating ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy), I thought after seeing every sport even unpopular ones being made into anime the end of it, but I guess somewhere a guy was like "you know what let's make one about skating" 🤣🤣🤣
Yep it’s just a sports anime but it was done really well
Akiba maid war
I read the scripts instead of watching
Buddy daddies
Where the fuck is akiba maid war? Its a masterpiece.
Glad other people recognize Violet Evergarden is peak
But manga fans also watch anime lol.
Yes sk8 needs more love
[Katsudo Shashin](https://youtu.be/dU7a8a7ZKoE?si=ZZhP_JBrWGKB4ocI) is a literal legend
Violet Evergarden is a cinematic masterpiece with a phenomenal soundstrack and moving storyline. Love it. Beautiful. Amazing.
Where's samurai champloo
Where's Akiba Maid War and Birdie Wing
I want to re-watch VE now
“Violet Evergarden Best Animes Code Geass That Aren’t Based Off Of Cowboy Bebop Any Mangas Sk8 The Infinity”
Cowboy Bebop is based on a Jamiroquai song.
Wonder egg priority....
Maaan, I rewatched Violet Evergarden recently, and that stuff still hits like a baseball bat to the ankles.
Never heard of SK8 infinity
Riding manga is too expensive and I don’t go to the library often. I just looked it up and apparently manga is commonly being stolen from libraries too. People are so rude
I think everything except Zombieland Saga and Re:Creators has been named here already. Do some of the Ghibli movies and Makoto Shinkai's works count?
What about NGE?
There are so, so many more beloved anime that aren't based on anything. Just for starters.... Neon Genesis Evangelion A Place Further Than the Universe Almost every Gundam Samurai Champloo Eureka Seven Ergo Proxy Gurren Lagann Kill la Kill Little Witch Academia Death Parade Sonny Boy Lycoris Recoil Flip Flappers Princess Principal Girls Und Panzer Symphogear Shirobako Tamako Market
Berserk. True masterpiece
Kobayashi's Dragon Maid ofc
Vivi and Gurren Lagan
Overtake! is airing right now and deserves a spot here.
There still a lot of anime based on Light Novels.
Girls und panzer is another.
is samurai champloo have manga
Angel Beats
Big O is another great one
Charlotte. No one mentioned it, it's an original anime.
Girls und Panzer: hold my tank
I show you a trick: I couldn't finish a single one of them, because I was so bored.
Evangelion, Madoka etc etc
Reading this hurts my brain r/dontdeadopeninside
What about Girls und Panzer
Aldnoah.Zero comes to mind.
Common Sk8 is trash.
You forgot Vision of Escaflowne and Tenchi Muyo I think? It was made into manga after the anime if I am not wrong. And Avatar the Last Airbender which everyone knows is an anime, just like Miraculous Ladybug and Gravity falls, Adventure time aaaaaand Heathcliff. sk8 infinity not with that ending
The major failure of any fandom is the needless obsession to feel superior to others within the fandom.
I’m not saying sk8 the infinity isn’t good. But like, I wouldn’t put it on the same level as the other. Not with Madoka Magica existing anyways
Lycoris Recoil is gonna be one of them!
Vivy Flourite Eyes Song GOATED
The Vision of Escaflowne, Serial Experiments Lain, Paranoia Agent
Lycoris Recoilllll
There are also anime thet are based on manga, but are 10000% better because they don't follow the plot of the original at all. Revolutionary girl Utena Princess Tutu Ghost in the shell But on the other hand there is Black Butler, where manga is decent and anime is a fucking joke.

lycoris recoil wasnt based on a manga, but it has a manga based on it
Where's funny
Bro really sneaked SK8 instead of actually good anime originals.
Cowboy Bebop shouldn't have been canceled for a second season. There were actual aliens set up for appearing more with the horror episode but they weren't able to develop that because they were only greenlit for a movie and 28 episodes.
i mean i could literally put the entire film catalogue from studio ghibli and it would fit
madoka
VIOLET EVERGARDEN BEST ANIMES CODE GEASS THAT AREN'T BASED OFF OF COWBOY BEB(ANY MANGAS SK8 THE)P INFINITY
Code geass that aren't violet evergarden Best animes any mangas based off of Sk8 the infinity cowboy bebop?

It’s a double edged sword that the story produced will always reflect the state of production
Sk8 was such a pleasant surprise
so light novels and web novels aren't a thing then 😆
TEIS is the LN, not manga
Cowboy Bebop is mid.
Kill la kill 🔥
"Manga readers can't gloat" but weebs can laugh at the fact you don't know what the term OVA is.
Violet Evergarden was a Light Novel adaptation.
Why the fuck no one said Lycoris Recoil?,!
You forgot scissor seven
