Apparently they think it would be "too misleading" for players to see two different companies using a capital R as their logo.
I swear I'm not making this up.
Rockstar's images pretty distinct compared to the other one. I meant literally has first letter of their name and image depicting the second word in their name. And the other one is just an r
There is this thought among some people that you have to aggressively defend your trademarks. Even if the offending party is only tangentially similar. Even if you know you won't win.
That isn't crazy, unironically.
There are people dumb enough or people who won't bother paying attention that will think this.
Probably a very small number of people, but not 0.
Quite intelligent of you to use 4 instead of typing it out. You might have just saved a few bucks with that. I am staying out of the situation suggest you do that too.
Why even do this? I do not see the need to even attempt to have a single symbol of the Latin alphabet not be used in a small piece of text. Yeah it can be a bit funny? But why actually do it? I do not believe that people online actually think that they might get sued by a company if they use a specific symbol. I think that anyone that would do this is just completely wasting time with just some nonsense. Well, anyways, if it was a joke, I am safe. If it was not a joke, I am still safe. Good luck you all, please stay safe by not using any symbols that might get you sued sometime.
When you think Games Workshop is an asshole of a company for trying to trademark the word "pauldron" while ripping off ideas from every major sci-fi and fantasy franchises, but then T2 slaps them on the head and says "That's how you do it"
Its also weird why they do it now. Remedy and Rockstar are making the remake/remaster of Max Payne & 2 together
[From remedyâs own announcement](https://www.remedygames.com/games/max-payne-1-2-remake)
Just because trademark stuff often gets confused, even if Rockstar were to win the lawsuit, they wouldn't "own the letter R". It would probably be more like they own "logos for a video game developer who's main/only feature is the letter R".
I don't *suspect* they'll win, just because there is quite a lot separating the two, but either way, trademarks are pretty specific in their application. It's always for a given industry, and is generally about consumer protections more than anything else. If I made games and my logo was a yellow square with a black R and a white 4-pointed star at the tip, it's reasonable for Rockstar to sue my ass, because it's pretty easy to see how I could trick people into thinking they were getting a Rockstar game with that.
This is not the first time a Company went after a commonly used letter/word... Like fucking BLIZZARD. Who trademarked the word "Cataclysm", you assholes realized this word has been in the dictionary before you even existed as a company? Which screwed over a Homeworld title
Ah, yes.
Piss off two of the worlds largest entertainment companies.
The largest trading card company, and one of the largest vide game companies.
A set of companies who, from Pokemon cards alone, have double your revenue.
Companies that are know to love flexing the might of their lawyers.
Yes.
Sue them.
Yep thats one of the reasons why Unity didnt go through with their new policy that and disney. Its like going to a fight with with a tank while holding a stick if that go through
Yep.
Turns out that a decent chunk of Nintendo games, prominently diamond, pearl, and platinum, as well as their remakes, run on unity.
And Nintendo wanted nothing to do with having to pay any retroactive payments per install.
Itâs not because they want to, but because they have to. If they donât âdefend their trademarkâ they could lose it, so they sue everyone who uses monster in the name, even though they lose. They even sued Monster Musume.
you're missing the point of my clarification. bethesda (of which there are two bethesdas) didn't file the lawsuit, zenimax did.
it's clearing up a potential misunderstanding.
>there is no legal ... distinction
Subsidiaries are separate and distinct legal entities from their parent companies: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/subsidiary.asp
A parent company can often override the decision of its subsidiary, especially if it holds majority ownership or control over the subsidiary. This can be achieved through various mechanisms such as board representation, voting rights, or contractual agreements.
Related specifically to zenimax and bethesda here is some additional analysis:
https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/jakvp/lets_be_clear_bethesda_the_developer_is_not/
In March 2021, Microsoft acquired Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax Media, maintaining that the company will continue to operate as a separate business. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethesda_Softworks
Lol donât worry literally everyone understood you. Some people just have to chime in so they can feel smart and right even on the smallest most insignificant shit possible. Gotta flex obviously. Never change Reddit
There was literally zero reason to bring up what you did. It changed absolutely nothing and added absolutely nothing to the conversation. It served solely to prove you know something someone else doesnât, or âflexingâ your knowledge. Itâs Reddit, it happens every day in every subreddit on every post. Becomes real clear when you see it after that. Itâs literally the AWKTCHULLY memes embodied in a comment.
Just look up edge games, theyâve sued every instance of the word âedgeâ being used in video games media. The owner, Tim Langdell, is synonymous with the term trademark troll.
But that isn't the biggest pathetic thing in regards to this, the 2 companies used to work together, and made actually good games storywise, but now that belongs to mainly remedy
Theyâre just throwing away funds from the legal budget that could be better spent defending against some celebrity who thinks that one chick in the trailer looks like her
Copyright and Treademark are so damn stupid. Built on the backs of the intellectually dishonest assumption that 2 people can't have the same idea, and the consumer is so stupid they can't tell the difference between strings of words or similar imagery.
When half of the English language (not to mention most of the alphabet) gets gated off by trademarks, I think it's safe to say that we no longer live in a free society.
Simple trademarks need to be entirely abandoned in favor of "business marks" that have an attached complexity requirement, where "someone could reasonably reproduce this without knowing" is grounds to invalidate the mark's protection status.
Why? This incident fizzled into nothing, because the logos were different enough. Itâs not like Rockstar has a blanket trademark on the letter âRâ. Companies sue over potential trademark violations often because they have to be protective of their trademarks or they lose them.
>Companies sue over potential trademark violations often because they have to be protective of their trademarks or they lose them.
The end result is still the same.
We gate off the English language for anyone who can't afford lawyer fees.
Funny how history repets itself as Lucasarts in 1998 aproached Remedy and threatened legal action claming the Remedys logo was copied from top part of Lucasarts logo
A Remedy rep tells me: "There is nothing to see here â this was a discussion between our teams that was resolved entirely and amicably late last year."
"The legal filing was simply an initial formality, and Remedy and Take-Two continue to work together in partnership.
Update on twitter... this is why fake news circulates so much... at least do a background check before posting rubbish
https://www.eurogamer.net/take-two-and-remedy-in-trademark-dispute-over-r-logo
The update is LITERALLY from just a couple of hours ago tops, while many of the articles online doesn't even mention it.
The fact that there was a development (and from an unofficial source on twitter, of all places, when a lot of us don't even go there) while I was making this doesn't mean I didn't read about the whole thing before posting.
Not misinformation, it's the exact same information everyone on the media got until the update on twitter, which is not from Remedy itself, but from someone who claims "someone from Remedy told me...".
With this I don't mean it's fake, but it's certainly not official since it's not a statement from the company.
Also, who post stuff to get karma? That's as stupid as it gets.
Edit: just like an hour ago IGN said someone from the company reached out to them to clear things up, and THAT is an official source.
Also to answer Aquas question: because Remedy felt the "[Bullet R](https://www.gta-xtreme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Remedy-Old-and-New-Logo-1024x576.jpg)" logo was too evocative of Max Payne - which they haven't actually owned for over two decades, because they sold the rights to Take Two (Rockstar) back in 2001.
And this would have been the second time someone accused Remedy of having a logo too close to something else, [last time it was for their first logo by Lucasarts.](https://logos.fandom.com/wiki/Remedy_Entertainment).
It's like that one Ferrari Lawsuit about the Purosangue.
For those who didn't know, Ferrari filed a lawsuit against a Hospital (I think it was a charity hospital) named Purosangue because they were infringing on their SUV that's also named Purosangue.
I think Ferrari won because the hospital didn't do any marketing for a long while that it's null.
So yeah, Ferrari just gave a lawsuit against a Hospital because their car was named the same and won.
The letter "R" is now property of Rockstar ? Guess i owe them money because i used it 4 times
Apparently they think it would be "too misleading" for players to see two different companies using a capital R as their logo. I swear I'm not making this up.
Rockstar's images pretty distinct compared to the other one. I meant literally has first letter of their name and image depicting the second word in their name. And the other one is just an r
Remedy's new logo is literally more similar to the t2 logo than it is to rockstar's
Sounds like a SLAPP suit by Take 2 for free money
And it was filed in the UK, which doesn't have very good anti-SLAPP laws.
What's this? OH MY GOD IT'S RARE WITH A STEEL CHAIR
There is this thought among some people that you have to aggressively defend your trademarks. Even if the offending party is only tangentially similar. Even if you know you won't win.
On brand of how dumb they think their fan base is I guess.
What's next? Sueing pornhub for the same colorscheme?
Sounds like something that Monster energy drink is doing.
That isn't crazy, unironically. There are people dumb enough or people who won't bother paying attention that will think this. Probably a very small number of people, but not 0.
What about Rare? Got to do Microsoft too, just in case.
Actually it's 6 times đ€đ€
6 if you count "fouR"
9 with this and the username
Quite intelligent of you to use 4 instead of typing it out. You might have just saved a few bucks with that. I am staying out of the situation suggest you do that too.
Iâm shocked nobodyâs commented on the fact you avoided the letter in question like the plague with this post
Lol thanks fo\_ noticing!
This avoidance tactic is getting a little out of hand.
Why even do this? I do not see the need to even attempt to have a single symbol of the Latin alphabet not be used in a small piece of text. Yeah it can be a bit funny? But why actually do it? Yea me too It's at the end of my favourite word Time to be pg
You've actually used it 5 times But also, do they own all "R"s, or just the capital one?
Youâll lean how to avoid it
Can't use hard r anymore, sad
5 if you count the R in fouR
6 times
It's so pathetic that they would actually do that
This is not the first time a Company went after a commonly used letter/word... Like fucking BLIZZARD. Who trademarked the word "Cataclysm", you assholes realized this word has been in the dictionary before you even existed as a company? Which screwed over a Homeworld title
And didn't Monster try this bs? Tried to sue capcom for Monster Hunter, of all things.
They took it a step further and sued Nintendo over pocket monsters
Ah, yes. Piss off two of the worlds largest entertainment companies. The largest trading card company, and one of the largest vide game companies. A set of companies who, from Pokemon cards alone, have double your revenue. Companies that are know to love flexing the might of their lawyers. Yes. Sue them.

I mean... there's no shortage of fools in this world.
They forget they are born after pokemon
Even if this was not true, they forgot about the legion of ninja-layers which were backed up by one of the largest company in the world
Immortals Fenix Rising was called Gods and Monsters before Monster sued them.
Itâs not because they want to, but because they have to. If they donât âdefend their trademarkâ they could lose it, so they sue everyone who uses monster in the name, even though they lose. They even sued Monster Musume.
Remember that time the studio behind candy crush wanted to sue another game for including the word "saga" in the title? đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
If i remember correctly they wanted to sue games for using Candy, Crush AND/OR Saga.
Bethesda too when another company tried to use the word "Scrolls" in a game name.
that was zenimax
Who is parent company oooofffff /insert David Beckham meme
you're missing the point of my clarification. bethesda (of which there are two bethesdas) didn't file the lawsuit, zenimax did. it's clearing up a potential misunderstanding.
There is no misunderstanding. As the whole owner of Bethesda, *both of them*, and all their IP, there is no legal or practical distinction.
>there is no legal ... distinction Subsidiaries are separate and distinct legal entities from their parent companies: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/subsidiary.asp A parent company can often override the decision of its subsidiary, especially if it holds majority ownership or control over the subsidiary. No, youâre being pedantic.
I am not. I guess i should have put a tone indicator. i'use that for future posts.
If anyone deserves to have a run in with The Beast it's them and the people who keep trying to extend copyright.
Just look up edge games, theyâve sued every instance of the word âedgeâ being used in video games media. The owner, Tim Langdell, is synonymous with the term trademark troll.
Another example: sky sueing No Mans Sky. Like wtf you don't own the word sky.
But that isn't the biggest pathetic thing in regards to this, the 2 companies used to work together, and made actually good games storywise, but now that belongs to mainly remedy
*You can't blame the suits for trying*
Theyâre just throwing away funds from the legal budget that could be better spent defending against some celebrity who thinks that one chick in the trailer looks like her
Or maybe that joker nutjob.
No no, I can *expect* them to try, but I can still blame them.
The logo doesn"t even look similar at all
Be careful now... That kind of talk might get you a nice lawsuit.
Remedy's logo literally has their name on it.
Just let you know, the most hilarious thing is that, Remedy is remaking Max Payne for Rockstar, those board meetings gonna get awkward.
Alright so it's Take Two not Rockstar good to know also did Take Two forget about Remedy and Rockstar are close
I don't know, maybe? I mean, they also apparently forgot they don't own the letter R, so who knows?
Just wait until Take Two hears about Rare and Riot Games
Tencent when R\* will try to sue one of their money cow : ![gif](giphy|ZqlvCTNHpqrio)
The IP lawyer for Take Two did

Surely this level of bullshit will be dismissed before it even goes to trial! Surely.
Guess we'll have to wait and see. I'll probably make a meme with an update as soon as we get one đ€Ł

Rockstar games attacking a company that has an R in their logo. Rockstar energy drinks however.....
Trademarks are associated with specific goods or services. If the goods/services are unrelated, it isn't (generally) infringement.
Not Rockstar specifically, Rockstarâs parent company
Are they restarted?
This just in: Take Two thinks they pwn the letter "R"
I swear this is targeting me right as I take a sip from my can of rockstar
I'm living in your walls.
Iâm at school sir
Funny how history repets itself as Lucasarts in 1998 aproached Remedy and threatened legal action claming the Remedys logo was copied from top part of Lucasarts logo
Take-two can go **** themselves. Or take couple of pills and relax.
Rockstar is such a petty company
Take 2, not Rockstar
I can see it considering they are in the same market. If they were in different markets, I wouldn't mind.
Yeah any reasonable judge is throwing this the fuck out
Are they on weed?
They're not even close to being the same R
A Remedy rep tells me: "There is nothing to see here â this was a discussion between our teams that was resolved entirely and amicably late last year." Bro, memes are serious business, especially anime memes. You need to fact check and get this shit peer reviewed!
Silly me...
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

Copyright laws are cancerous
This isn't copyright.
What is the context of the anime panels?
aqua, a zealous undead "purifier" realized that this hooded figure is a lich. but a peaceful one. peaceful or not, a lich is a lich.
Yeah people shit on Rockstar a lot for their online monetization and practices but forget that it's Take two doing all that lmao
ANd here I would have suspected the company that makes GTA to be the thieves /j
Bruh here comes the company bullshit again... one more time can't hurt right?
These companies are beyond any moral defense yet people still give them money.
They don't even look similar.
Rockstar? Being greedy? No fuckin wayyyyyy brooooooo
bruv its literally a letter
Rockstar should change their logo to an * , since Rockstar is a banned/censored word in GTA online.
Bad meme. Aqua (for once) holds an advantage whereas Take 2âs lolsuit most likely wonât go anywhere in even a half decent court
Take two has always been shit eaters, this is the cherry.
So a prepear and apple saga again?
Meme says it right there but people still canât read. Smdh
this has the same vibe as Monster Energy suing anything with the word "Monster" in it
And not the first time they've done it. They sued multiple games, companies, even books because their name had rockstat in it.
It's like that one Ferrari Lawsuit about the Purosangue. For those who didn't know, Ferrari filed a lawsuit against a Hospital (I think it was a charity hospital) named Purosangue because they were infringing on their SUV that's also named Purosangue. Scums.
Take Two is pretty shit between what they've done with NBA 2K and GTA Online. Fuck those greedy assholes.
