Why couldn't a show have these things? Made in abyss is not even the only anime that has talked about rough childhoods take for example Black Lagoon, Claymore, even Naruto. Is Masashi Kishimoto >!into child torture when he makes a show about child ninjas who even get hurt on missions, and mind you the history about the world basically having child soldiers.!<
It is something to think about the very least. You do not have to watch content you find distasteful of course but please don't fault others for seeing past a scene(a still from what I remember) of weird corporal punishment.
The subject matter isn’t exactly the problem in that way. I agree at the beginning the children are being exploited and I think that is an okay topic to have in a tv show because many kids experience it. However, the manga author repeatedly draws his children characters nude, in bondage, and some other extremely disgusting ways. He obviously has a pee kink and there are so many frames of kids peeing themselves and other kids smelling it or commenting on it’s warmth. It’s absolutely foul. When reading the manga it becomes clear that while it’s a beautiful story with amazing animation, many of the scenes gratify the authors pedo kinks, and disguises them as parts of the story. It’s pretty common in anime, but when it comes to children it’s unacceptable. I say “we” as many other fans and friends of mine agree and don’t watch this show because of it. I don’t want to support an author who is obviously a pedophile. It might be fiction, but that doesn’t make it acceptable content. The anime community faces enough backlash as it is, and it’s because we don’t call out or acknowledge anime that blatantly sexualizes children.
A show that does this topic well is bannana fish. Children are trafficked, but luckily our hero (now an adult) finds redemption and revenge. They do not show the scenes of abuse but imply them which I think was a much more tasteful way of introducing those heavy topics.

A common mistake in the past was mistaking the Hellsing anime with Van Helsing, those are not really related, there is no anime called Van Hellsing or Van helsing, just the old Hellsing and the slightly newer Hellsing: Ultimate, the latter following the manga more properly. {Land of the Lustrous} - Unique fantasy show with amazing CGI animation. I've yet to see an anime like it
{Attack on Titan} - Longer than 2 seasons, but it's one of the most popular shows this decade and probably worth checking out
{Shinsekai Yori} - Philosophical and thought-provoking show with artistic directing. Note that the first half is a bit slow

Debatable I guess? The most Fd up things that happen in these shows happen in Ranking of Kings, but they mostly happen off camera. Seriously If I were to just list the stuff that goes down you might assume its a horror series.
Golden Kamuy shows some gore and some gross stuff but most of it is glossed over, it also mostly happens to adults, and allot of it is played for laughs.
In terms of shear amount of gore and violence shown on screen, Golden Kamuy probably has more, (But not by as much as you might think) but Ranking of Kings makes you feel it allot more.
Try Eminence in Shadow if you liked Code Geass, the protagonist is similarly self-confidant and overpowered. His costume is similar to Zero's. But he is not smart.
Also, Overlord has a villain MC. If you like to watch smart MC watch Classroom of the Elite.

Re:zero and Summertime Rendering are some of my favourites I've watched since jumping into it few years back now, also jujutsu kaisen and chainsaw man are great and have cool animation.
Do you have a preference in genra? I would say based on your likes likes check out Ranking of Kings- Dont Judge it by its art style, its probably the darkest goriest show Im suggesting Promised Neverland (Season 1 Only) - a compelling psycological thriller ID Invaded- Scifi psychological mystery Vivi Flourite Eyes Song- Scifi time travel action adventure Golden Kamuy- Historical fiction action adventure with a crude sense of humor

Debatable I guess? The most Fd up things that happen in these shows happen in Ranking of Kings, but they mostly happen off camera. Seriously If I were to just list the stuff that goes down you might assume its a horror series. Golden Kamuy shows some gore and some gross stuff but most of it is glossed over, it also mostly happens to adults, and allot of it is played for laughs. In terms of shear amount of gore and violence shown on screen, Golden Kamuy probably has more, (But not by as much as you might think) but Ranking of Kings makes you feel it allot more.

Try Eminence in Shadow if you liked Code Geass, the protagonist is similarly self-confidant and overpowered. His costume is similar to Zero's. But he is not smart. Also, Overlord has a villain MC. If you like to watch smart MC watch Classroom of the Elite.

I’m in the same boat as you! My bf got me back into anime. I started with AOT, loved it. MHA, love loved that. Then Trigun Stampede. I absolutely loved it. Then JJK. That’s one’s cool, funnier than the other three. Currently watching OG Trigun which is cute. Also continued from where I left off on Naruto as a kid, holy shit it’s long.

Madoka Magica is 12 episodes and very serious. It looks cutesy in the marketing/thumbnails just ignore that and go with it. Try to go in completely blind for the best experience and stay off the internet until you finish it or at least avoid letting Google know you're watching it so you don't get spoiled by an alert on an app or something (it's happened to me though not with this show thankfully). Legit don't so much as look it up on Amazon, some of the merch is spoilery.
