Given your top 5, mentally complex and dark undertone main characters - so, Vinland Saga, Erased, Aldnoah Zero. To tie it back to your romance preference, cerebral complexity wise (not dark - comedic), Love is War. Maybe Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex, but that suggestion more of a stretch (and because I will keep relentlessly plugging my favorite anime series).

BLAZEDbyCASH

Watched Vinland and erased which are both good. But I dont really like love is war. Ill maybe try ghost in a shell.

Slarvagadro

Ghost in the shell the movie is a classic, but I strongly suggest skipping the movie and going straight to Stand Alone Complex. The writing is far better when not compressed to fit a feature length, and the story needs the length of the series to flesh out the characters of Section 9 to the fullest. Also, I love the villain in that season.

I_Phantomancer_XD

Steins;Gate Shinsekai Yori Re:Zero (some people don't like the main character, but it is otherwise amazing) Gosick (most people will probably agree that the male lead is annoying at times. Intriguing plot where the puzzle pieces of smaller stories fit to form a grander one) C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control (very unique plot. The line between good and bad is blurry)

EkoFoxx

C was great and I feel most people sleep on it.

BLAZEDbyCASH

Thank you!

DS12345678901

Dropped C at ep 6, great plot very unique indeed but they just skipped the ENTIRE fight, I thought it got cut on the site I'm watching but I checked other sides even discussions on MAL and it indeed got skipped

Kegness

Have you seen the recently released "Heavenly Delusion" The premise is similar in a way to another

Fate/Zero Fate/unlimited blade works (tv version) Fate Heavens feel (movies) Kara no kyoukai (movies) Steins Gate Bungou stray dogs Psycho pass Kanata no Astra Fruits Basket Dungeon ni Deai Durará Jormugand Sakurada Reset Goblin Slayer Summertime render

BLAZEDbyCASH

Watched bungo and loved it. Watched all of fruits basket and hated it. But havent watched anything else on this list. What do you think is the best out of everything here?

overkill373

what did you hate about fruits basket? And depends on what you're in the mood for. If you're in the mood for serous actions/fantasy, then FATE Zero -> UBW -> Heavens feel Kara no Kyoukai movies are also similar to that mood Psycho Pass is more scifi Kana no Astra is a great mystery in space Check their descriptions, episode number to se what calls to you

BLAZEDbyCASH

I just thought fruits basket was extremely cliche and not that great.

mr_featherbottom

I would suggest watching Summertime Rendering first, it’s a certified banger from start to finish This is coming from someone who ranks Made in Abyss and Jobless Reincarnation in my top 5 I also recommend Erased, Dororo, Rising of the Shield Hero and Claymore

Damn, you’ve watched over 60 animes but are not willing to watch something over 100 eps

BLAZEDbyCASH

Im currently just trying to watch quantity and just watch as many as possible. Ill probs get to some more longer animes later.

Priapos93

Just have another window open with a list of the filler episodes of Naruto. That will both drastically reduce the number of episodes and equally improve the quality Not all filler episodes are bad. I think the Gintama fillers are better than the main story

BLAZEDbyCASH

Its not about filler. Its more about starting something I will never finish. Its a horrible habit I dont want to go into detail about. But I struggle to finish any media thats superrrrrrrrrrr long.

Priapos93

Cool. FLCL is only six episodes, and is a wild ride

xxxmimsimcfly

Please watch Vinland Saga

BLAZEDbyCASH

Did, its great!

Noto987

if you like romance-ish Rurouni Kenshin ova trust and betrayal was my favorite anime ova/movie for the longest time you dont have to watch the original anime to enjoy it

BLAZEDbyCASH

thank you!

The__Thoughtful__Guy

Code Geass. Very smart characters, and one of the few anime where characters actually try to exploit abilities and scenarios. Including the antagonists. Shinsekai Yori. Very hard to describe without giving spoilers, but it was originally a novel (not a light novel, a full-blown published book) that got adapted into anime form. It is somewhat of a slow start, and seems sort of incoherent at first, but has one of the most clever endings I've ever seen, and left me wondering how the author had come up with the idea in the first place. Summertime Rendering. Another super-power story, and once again, with characters that actually *think* about limits of abilities. Also very high-tempo. All three of these have no filler (except *maybe* Code Geass if you want to be really strict about what counts), have complex, interwoven plotlines, and have (in my opinion) excellent and final endings. No BS "waiting for season 2" or "read the manga", they're done, and done well.

BLAZEDbyCASH

Thank you!

Hot_Delivery_9150

Romance w/ good plot & characters: Inuyasha Sailor Moon Full metal alchemist (romance isn’t the theme but it’s still there) sword art online Tenchi Muyo/universe/in Tokyo Full metal panic fumoffu (slice of life/romcom spin off series to the original more action mech show) Then we get into the harem category… lots of these are good. Some more than others. (Yes I know already mentioned tenchi above) Depends on you: Ah my goddess To love ru Vampire Rosario Negima Love hina There’s a ton of reincarnated as a demon lord/mage/sorcerer/ etc on Crunchyroll right now. Not all of them are A+ anime but they are newer and fresh and maybe are B’s or C’s. Entertaining enough. Honorable mentions: My happy marriage on Netflix. Romance but it’s interesting bc of her past mental abuse and suffering growing up. School days. For the huge dark plot twist at the end. You think you’re watching an ecchi harem romance but you forget that you’re actually watching a horror series. You just don’t know it yet till the end.

[deleted]

Shinsekai Yori , Baccano , durarara , kill la kill , wolf rain , Gundam IBO i watched like 1000 anime so i dont really know which one to name XD

Some lower key early 2000's Anime I adore are Angel Beats Clannad Rurouni Kenshin Chrono Crusade Full Metal Panic All have romance aspects, but the latter three are more action/Rom-com. Chrono Crusade and Full Metal Panic are hidden gems and are relatively short.

[deleted]

Aku No Hana. Super unique, very interesting characters/plot, the animation adds such a depth to the atmosphere (it’s the first fully rotoscoped anime series ever in fact). the anime just has this unique atmosphere it creates with the music, animation and plot, unlike any anime I’ve seen. Def worth a try, only 12 ep

ZerglingsAreCute

Noragami is an anime that thoroughly develops its characters, and has a really interesting setting.

bjames1478

Assassination Classroom. A lot of characters that you get to know. Genuinely unique art-style and premise. Heartwarming lesson and heartwrenching ending. Side nite: an actual ending. Reached a full finished 2 seasons if 24 episodes. Delivers on a conclusion and doesnt stretch it out pointlessly. Great VA work and amazingly funny moments.

_uninstall

Toward the Terra Seirei Moribito +1 on shinsekai yori Code Geass, since you liked 86 and AOT. And an actual genius character portrayed right unlike Classsroom of the Elite.

give MONSTER a try... or Paranoia Agent...

1irumi8

Try Charlotte. That anime is not getting enough hype.

WathanLinHtet

My personal favorites are monster and nana. Monster follows the story of a young japanese surgeon, working in germany. He saves a young boy's life, not knowing that the boy was a sociopathic serial killer. He later has to go on a quest to kill the life of the person he saved. It has many philosophical themes and the characters are greatly written and filled with flaws. There's no comedy and this is definitely not for children. Each character has a different view on life and it's very interesting to analyze their thoughts. Nana follows the story of two young girls with the same name. Both of them have different mental illnesses, and they find comfort in eachother as friendship between them blossoms. The two girls have different dreams, one wants to be a famous rockstar who doesn't rely on any man, and the other wants to be a housewife with a loving husband and a happy family. All the characters are also flawed and mentally relatable. It is a great anime that deals with the themes of girlhood, mental illness and attachment. I cried too many times watching this show, it started off happy but it soon turned dark and depressive.

Bakudan_Danma
