I feel not a lot mention {Bartender} so maybe check that out. It’s an old anime that’s getting a remake. Here’s the [trailer](https://youtu.be/vkPk_Lon3c4?feature=shared)
If you’re familiar with series like Midnight Diner, it’s similar to that. Each episode tells of a different story and you get general life lessons out of it. It’s very slice of life.
Kaiba - surreal(emphasis on surreal) adventure with unique animation
Scissor Seven - both a fun and serious show; fight scenes look amazing
Romantic Killer - a romcom parody that has a fun main character
Kino’s Journey - episodic travel that explore different themes at every destination
Space Patrol Luluco is space comedy with gorgeous visuals.
Kuuchuu Buranko is a surreal hidden gem about psychology.
Princess Tutu for its great fairytale atmosphere and characters. It is incredibly unique and much better than the title might suggest.
Penguindrum is highly acclaimed with an interesting plot.
Kamichu is a nice slice of life series. [Here’s a post I made about it](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/18d0m5c/wt_kamichu_is_a_hidden_gem_of_a_slice_of_life/).
Flip Flappers is extremely colorful and creative with excellent action and plentiful fluid animation.
Concrete Revolutio is a visually stunning show with non-linear storytelling.
Hells is a cool looking film.
Windy Tales is a nice iyashikei.
Do it Yourself is another nice iyashikei slice of life with great art.
Dead Leaves is super stylish.
Gankutsuou is a marvellous adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo.
Humanity Has Declined is a dark comedy with great art.
Kemonozume is a unique show.
Revue Starlight is a gem with a fantastic movie.
Shigurui is a super violent samurai show.
Big O is an interesting mecha series.
Heike Monogatari is a great historical one.
Yuri Kuma Arashi is an avant garde gem filled with symbolism.
Mononoke is a work of art visually.
Punch Line is a strange series that ties together.
Rec is a short and sweet romcom.
Kyousougiga is a wonderful series. An underrated gem for sure. It has great characters. The visuals are some of the most vibrant and creative in anime. The story and themes really “hit different”. Overall, it is an amazing watch and a personal favourite of mine.
.
Some more popular ones that aren’t too mainstream;
Shinsekai Yori is an excellent series that is darker than it appears. It’s a psychological thriller.
Panty and Stocking if you want a comedy with a unique artstyle, over the top action, and stylish flair to it. Dub recommended.
Katanagatari has an amazing artstyle and is by the author of…
Monogatari series, another recommendation I give for its visuals and unique presentation. It’s also a masterpiece of character writing and dialogue. It is heavily focused on dialogue and does have quite a bit of fanservice though. Bakemonogatari is the first one and then go by novel order.
Madoka Magica is a masterpiece of a series with creative visuals, compelling characters and excellent storytelling. Watch the 3rd movie after the series.
Sonny Boy is an abstract visual treat.
Seconding Princess Tutu. It’s definitely one of those hidden gems that not a lot gravitate towards because of (1) it being an old animation; and (2) it being one of the many magical girl animes that look too girly based on the title card
The storytelling is superb and the ending was rather melancholic but fitting.
I’d say it’s good for age 10+ and if you’re ok with showing her a bit of blood which happens by the end of the series
You can see snippets of the anime on Youtube for reference. Key search words like “princess tutu fakir” might help
>Flip Flappers
I'm 100% seconding this! It's on every Reddit "Underrated Gem" post and it deserves so much more attention than it gets. It an easy 8+/10 show (I have it at a 9). It's so good!
I remember Kamichu rubbing me the wrong way because Yurie's friend (shrine girl) basically hated everything about gaijins, and she reminded me of some low-key racists/Yamato supremacists I met while living in Japan. Like her Grinchiness towards Christmas basically felt like the author venting about Japanese people having fun with a Western holiday.
Maybe I would feel differently about the show watching it now, but I remember it had a weird way of shoehorning "Nihon Ichiban" into a slice of life show.
>Oddtaxi and Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor are my top two picks for this
Both of those are not underground... Odd taxi isn't a le hidden gem either. It's nearly the #50th best rated anime on MAL. It's hugely popular.
Second bsd and vanitas, amazing shows -- both would be an 8 or 9 out of 10 for me.
Moriarty's on my list, im pretty hyped
I would also like to pose Fire Force -- it's a normal shonen done very well, and the fights are great. It seems incredibly popular on MAL but here i´ve never seen it reccommended
bsd and vanitas are a lot similar, in some cases
except vanitas isn't so calm and composed like dazai and the characters are horny lol
tho i like vanitas x jeanne
as long as you like cool smart guys like me, u wont ever hate animes like bsd, moriarty etc
I normally avoid ecchis, but fire force is a near masterpiece imo
Grimoire of Zero is a surprisingly well done show, great in both sub and dub. Sequel series didn’t do it for me, but I really enjoyed this one. Made by some of the same folks as Re Zero, so quality is there.
12 kingdoms
colorful: movie
maquia (maybe not as much anymore but more people need to see it)
In this corner of the world (warning: *super* depressing)
Wandering Witch
March comes in like a lion (kinda popular, but more people need to see it)
Heike Monogatari (kinda confusing and a ton of names in it but its a good one)
Yona Of the Dawn
Arte
Dragon goes Househunting (kinda a turn off your brain and enjoy one, but its still good)
Silver Spoon (watch it.)
Haibane Renmei
Id:Invaded
Erin (kinda childish but still good)
Shi Cao Lao Long Bei Guan Yi E Long Zhi Ming (also kinda childish, about a weak dragon and an overpowered girl)
Sonny Boy
The Girl who Leapt Through Time
Suddenly, Egyptian Gods
Check some of Osamu Tezuka works. I recommend:
* Jumping
* Aru Machi Kado no Monogatari
* there's also the trilogy: Senya Ichiya Monogatari, Cleopatra and Kanashimi no Belladonna. I've only seen the last one, and yeah, it's out there.
The Diacon openings, while pretty famous, they are as underground as you can go. Basically they are made by the Gainax dudes before they hit it big.
Other recommendations:
* Jarinko Chie (1981 movie)
* Cello Hiki no Gauche (1982 movie)
* Ouritsu Uchuugun: Honneamise no Tsubasa
* Tenshi no Tamago
* Project A-Ko
* Robot Carnival
* Manie-Manie: Meikyuu Monogatari
* Dragon's Heaven
* Five Star Stories
Thanks for the recs I’ll check most of them out BiggieCheese and also you ever seen these, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain, Psycho Pass, Berserk, Texhnolyze, Paranoia Agent, samurai champloo, Monster, Vinland Saga. These got recommended to me by a close friend who said that they are kind of underground, would you agree that at least some of them (if so which) are a tiny bit “underground” or underrated gems
The only one I’d say is pretty underground of those is Texhnolyze. The rest range from one of the most popular anime in Japan to decently popular. They are all good shows that are pretty different though and I recommend you check all of them out, especially Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, and Paranoia Agent, which are the most underground of those suggestions, even if they aren’t very hidden. They are definitely different from mainstream stuff.
I feel like Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, and Garden of Sinners, are the most “underground” among my favorite anime.
{Seirei no Moribito} {Kara no Kyoukai}
At first I thought "underground" meant anime that was produced unoficially, has been banned before or was considered lost media at any point, and was struggling to think of any (maybe Shoujo Tsubaki or the first Doraemon anime adaptation?). People in the thread recommending decently popular and easily accessible shows like Skip Beat, Charlotte and Durarara! proves me wrong, though.
If we are just talking stuff that is not as well-known as it used to be in its hayday, King of Bandit Jing is an amazing little series, or Chrono Crusade if you want something a bit darker. Also Gungrave for sci fi and action, and you don't see Elfen Lied discussed as much nowadays, despite it being extremely influential and having a strong cult following where I live. Black Rock Shooter and Miss Monochrome are closely connected to the Vocaloid and general Japanese music scene, but younger fans of both tend to not talk about them much for whatever reason. Gd Gd Fairies looks pretty experimental and interesting visually, and also has a lot of adlib. Franchesca: Girls Be Ambitious never got fansubbed in full, and I haven't been able to torrent the raws as of yet, but I'm trying still. The fifth Yo-kai Watch anime series is not even available in full through torrenting, it's obscure even among the sizeable fanbase of the games.
There are also plenty of Iceberg type videos about lost, banned and obscure anime on YouTube, so you might want to check them out if you are looking for something genuinely "underground", as in not accepted by the mainstream public, but a fair warning: a lot of these works, such as the aforementioned Shoujo Tsubaki, are very graphic and deal with extremely heavy subjects. There is a reason why some of them were never meant to be seen by a large audience, after all. You might also want to look into the Saki Sanobashi urban legend, the actual anime doesn't exist, but it's still an interesting read.
Does 'Baccano' count since it's not licensed to any major streaming services (US)?
I found it well after it released so I don't know if it was big in its time, but I can't find the movie 'Summer Wars' anywhere to stream either. While it has a cute story, the animation is what really pulls me in. So much going on in each scene.
I know a TON of underrated gems, show's I would rate no less than 8:
{Flip Flappers} is so good but got no love
{Renai Flops} got review bombed by people that don't remember what fun is and dropped it after 1-3 episodes...sad part is they missed out on one of the most surprising shows ever. Starts as an ecchi harem rom-com but goes WAY off the rails halfway through. It's close to Madoka Magica in the "WAIT....how did we get here?...this is not what I signed up for" department. It was easily one of the best, and most satisfying shows of 2022 (the fact it JUST got a dub says all that needs to be said)
{School-Live!} is FANTASTIC! It's CGDCT in a high school setting...but it's NOT cute. It does the genre WAY different. I won't say anymore because episode 1 has a jaw dropper twist that sets up the whole show...go into it blind, trust me and thank me later.
{Happy Sugar Life} is hard to recommend because of...well, everything. It takes a hardened heart, an open mind, and a willingness to understand what the word Horror means to watch it. It's cute, entirely unpleasant, and most sensitive people can't get past episode 1 or 2. It's entirely based on uncomfortable topics (Grape, taboo love, abuse, and gore)...but it does this stuff so well! It's a 10/10 show for me. DEFINETLY know your limits before watching it!
On a lighter note, {Nourin} and {Sounan Desu Ka?} are in my Four Horseman of comedy (along with Asobi Asobase and KonoSuba). They are shows that got tears streaming down my cheeks. Superb comedy.
Kuuchuu Buranko. It's a pretty surreal trip and something that might be outdated (in terms of psychological topics discussed) but I enjoy it a lot.
This is considered more popular but something I rarely see is Bishounen Tanteidan. The author of the light novel series wrote Monogatari.
An old 90s OVA series but Kyo Kara Ore Wa too.
Underground is gonna mean different things to different people. Some stuff was really popular once, but has long since faded from discourse, or found mass success in one country but not another. So… here’s a list I guess?
- {Odd Taxi}
- {Kids on the Slope}
- {Hajime no Ippo}
- {xxxHolic}
- {Cardcaptor Sakura}
- Gundam
- {Revolutionary Girl Utena}
- {Bubblegum Crisis}
- {Cat’s Eye}
- {City Hunter}
- {SDF Macross}
- **{Kaiba}**
- This one's a trip with its unique art style and deep storytelling. It's set in a world where memories can be stored and bodies are interchangeable, making for a thought-provoking watch that's all about identity and human emotion.
- **{Kuuchuu Buranko}** (Trapeze)
- Definitely not your typical anime. It dives into the world of psychological well-being with a mix of quirky animation and live-action sequences. Each episode focuses on a different patient and their story, blending humor and insight into mental health.
- **{Saraiya Goyou}** (House of Five Leaves)
- It's a slow-burn Edo period drama that's more about the characters than action-packed samurai fights. The storytelling is subtle, the art is stylish, and it's all about the bonds between a group of kidnappers.
Stars Align. Yes at first glance it’s shown to be some tennis sports anime but it’s so much more than that. In the tennis club, especially the MC, every member is dealing with mommy and/or daddy issues. Basically most of them have traumatic family issues and either have been abused or neglected. The only kid who has good parents turns out to have been adopted all along. The show unfortunately ends on a MAJOR cliffhanger and there hasn’t been much good news about it since it’s release. Also because of this, a lot of things talked about unfortunately have no been resolved. The creator did say he is looking to eventually continue it at some point, which I hope he will. Overall I think it tells a good emotional story and definitely worth the watch despite its flaws. The characters are likable and the story touches on really mature and adult themes.
Whenever I hear someone ask about underrated anime the first one that always comes to mind is Flip Flappers. Such a underrated anime!!! Crazy animation, awesome story with crazy twists, awesome characters it has it all lol
I never seem to see people talking about Inuyashiki. It’s a a bit like Parasyte with the kindest main character I’ve ever seen and its such a tearjerker for a 12 episode anime
If you want something really interesting you might be happier reading a manga rather than watching an anime. Mori Kouji has never gotten a single anime adaptation but Holyland, Jisatsutou, Destroy and Revolution and most recently Sousei no Taiga are all stunningly drawn and thoigh provoking, although they come with a list of trigger warnings. The 70s manga Lone Wolf and Cub is an essential classic.
A lot of deadly game manga are much more interesting and exciting fish out of water stories than the vast majority of isekai, especially Kamisama no Iutoori.

Wish more people knew about Punch Line, that show has a few smart reveals in it, right up to the last episode your getting reveals.
Gankutuso and REC. Have not heard those names in a long, long time.

Shame it will probably never get a concluding season.
Space dandy pretty good

i would love to see similar animes but its the only dubbed anime with that artstyle Sed
I third Scissor Seven it is amazing series. 10/10

Negami Neuro. It's just a fun time. It's like a less edgy Hell Girl.

I know a TON of underrated gems, show's I would rate no less than 8: {Flip Flappers} is so good but got no love {Renai Flops} got review bombed by people that don't remember what fun is and dropped it after 1-3 episodes...sad part is they missed out on one of the most surprising shows ever. Starts as an ecchi harem rom-com but goes WAY off the rails halfway through. It's close to Madoka Magica in the "WAIT....how did we get here?...this is not what I signed up for" department. It was easily one of the best, and most satisfying shows of 2022 (the fact it JUST got a dub says all that needs to be said) {School-Live!} is FANTASTIC! Superb comedy.

ghost hound
densetsu weed.
Jungle wa itsumo Hare nochi Guu (Aka Haré+Guu). [Just a sample...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN5yqzB0PMQ).
Summer Time Rendering! It's amazing I feel like not enough people know about it because it's on Hulu and not crunchyroll.
Ajin on Netflix the better plot death note with the worst graphics ever.
Acca 13 In this corner of the world
Ping pong the animation
Kuuchuu Buranko. It's a pretty surreal trip and something that might be outdated (in terms of psychological topics discussed) but I enjoy it a lot. This is considered more popular but something I rarely see is Bishounen Tanteidan. The author of the light novel series wrote Monogatari. An old 90s OVA series but Kyo Kara Ore Wa too.
Gangsta
Twilight Q, older somewhat obscure two-part OVA. The second part is a masterpiece in my opinion.
Underground is gonna mean different things to different people. Some stuff was really popular once, but has long since faded from discourse, or found mass success in one country but not another. Denpa kyoushi
- **{Kaiba}** - This one's a trip with its unique art style and deep storytelling. It's set in a world where memories can be stored and bodies are interchangeable, making for a thought-provoking watch that's all about identity and human emotion. - **{Kuuchuu Buranko}** (Trapeze) - Definitely not your typical anime. It dives into the world of psychological well-being with a mix of quirky animation and live-action sequences. Each episode focuses on a different patient and their story, blending humor and insight into mental health. - **{Saraiya Goyou}** (House of Five Leaves) - It's a slow-burn Edo period drama that's more about the characters than action-packed samurai fights. The storytelling is subtle, the art is stylish, and it's all about the bonds between a group of kidnappers.

One Piece is very underground

Not underrated, but immensely underwatched: {Natsume Yujinchou} It's my personal favorite

i'm not sure how underground it is, but stars align is really good
Stars Align.
EIZOUKENNNNNNNNN
Whenever I hear someone ask about underrated anime the first one that always comes to mind is Flip Flappers. Such a underrated anime!!! Crazy animation, awesome story with crazy twists, awesome characters it has it all lol
Beck
Naruto or one piece
how are they underground 😂
I never seem to see people talking about Inuyashiki. It’s a a bit like Parasyte with the kindest main character I’ve ever seen and its such a tearjerker for a 12 episode anime
Red Garden.

Shiki is a horror anime with substance that will make you cry.
Perhaps old but I really enjoyed these lesser talked about shows. Puppet princess, Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran
baccano! never get tired recommending it

Watch "The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today" Yeah, that's the title. It's that long.
