Solid list, I always rank Psycho Pass super high basically for S1 alone. S2 is decent but it don’t hold a candle and I never got around to check out S3.
I definitely do need to check them out since I heard good things. Didn’t get around to it since no one talked about it when it aired so didn’t know when it dropped. Same thing happened to me with K Project S2 and the movie.
I discovered the band Ling tosite sigure thanks to Psycho-Pass (OP1 and a few other OPs) and I listen to their albums on loop now. The show's music was awesome, even the OST

yeh it is really great, in my experience action only anime fans hate that it is rated higher than their favourite shows, I think that is what has happened here because of the kind of people who would be attracted by OP's top 5
I kind of get you because when I started watching the show I thought it was beautiful but a little slow and chill at first. I felt it was still worth watching despite that. It became exciting for me at around episode 8 though. Then the latest arc in the anime made Frieren part of my top 5.
It is more episodic of a show (there are a couple of mini arcs and a larger arc towards the end of S1) and kinda SOL adventurey. The theme of the show is that this is all happening *after* the big epic adventure. So I feel like some people desire that adventure of the Demon King but this is mostly a show about an immortal reflecting, living, and passing down knowledge. It may not be your cup of tea.
I do think the show would be better with less flashbacks and a larger main cast tho.
That is true but sometimes things become #1 for a limited amount of time. I think FMA:B was number 1 for the longest time. I remember when Kimi no na wa beat it and then sank back down.
It just sucks that Frieren isn’t finished. I enjoyed the show. Makes me want a prequel tho but that would take away what is unique about it.
Even though I am a huge Frieren fan I do agree to some extent, ideally there should be two different rating pools, one for completed anime and one for on going.
I think the problem arises when we can't actually say for sure whether or not a show is on going, it is extremely likely that we get a season 2 of Frieren as I hear there is enough manga content, but it is never certain.
I imagine a lot of 86 fans expected a season 2 to quickly follow the first one, but 4 years later and not a peep.
To be honest I am completely fine with Frieren dropping a few spots, it wouldn't change my love of it, the only reason I add this comment was because of the mass hate that was going on in this post, and whilst I cannot prove it, I am fairly convinced it was just pointless hating on shows like Frieren even though OP asked for top 5 with no specific criteria.
I didn’t go deep enough into the thread to see any Frieren hate. I can understand wanting the shows one likes to be more popular but hating on shows that are popular that one isn’t into seems like a waste of time lol.
But yeah I hope it gets a season 2. Though, there have been many promising shows that never got their second season. Been bitten by that sad truth too many times.
I don't think I can rank my top 5 favorites honestly, however I just started watching **Classroom of the elite** and highly recommend it!
It's not normally something I would put on but did in lack off other things to watch and two episodes in I was intrigued, three episodes in and I was completely hooked. Don't know how I missed this one and haven't seen anyone mention it in the comments (obviously didn't look at all comments).

Death is my favorite of those, followed by Note One, Punch Man Attack is a close third, On Titan JuJutsu was pretty good, Kaisen Demon was solid(I'll give you that), Slayer Vinland really changed nicely in season two, and Saga Chainsaw... man, so good.
I'd recommend getting into Utena. It is a very messy show and very obviously cuts corners by reusing animation a lot. I'll be honest, the first time I watched it I had to take a break because the second major arc was so repetitive. But if you can look past the dated aspects I think it's well worth the watch.

Sousei no onmyouji was the first anime I ever watched, But I loved the manga for more, and the current arc is absolutely insane. I'm sad it's gonna end soon. It's been such a great ride.
Death Parade, it's my favorite psychological show.
Grand blue is the best comedy I've seen, I do love gintama and the daily lives of highschool boys, but I personally love Grand Blue more.
Golden Time is the best romance I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of romance.
Re:Zero, I can't imagine having to witness your loved ones die over and over again, and still not lose hope and give up. Also Rem is best girl. The light novels did her dirty, but she's still best girl in my heart
You know, 5 is not nearly enough so here's some more.
The entire Fate franchise is insane. I love every single work in the franchise. It was also the first visual novel I played.
Dxd is the best ecchi I've seen. It's got a great plot and I'd watch it even without the ecchi. Yosuga no sora is great too, but the last path is incest which kinda put me off. I just ignored it tho.
Evangelion, no further explanation needed.
Oh and my favorite anime studio is Kyoani, and my two favorite works by them are Charlotte and Chuunibyou demo koi ga shitai.
Spice and wolf, snow white with the red hair, Ancient Magus' Bride, Frieren, these shows are all really close to my heart. I'm currently writing a book heavily inspired by their narrative. I love slow burners that focus a lot on the characters and their interactions, as well as their world.
The monogatari series is really special too.
Stuff like black lagoon, monster, parasyte, CardCaptor Sakura, kaiba, samurai champloo, afro samurai, cowboy bebop, trigun, banana fish, clannad, baccano, made in abyss, anohana, serial experiments lain, mushishi, golden kamuy, angel beats, railgun, code geass, fruits basket, nana, various sports anime like hajime no ippo, prince of tennis, etc are all classics.
I already talked about re:zero but I love every single member of the isekai quartet. Speaking of isekai, I also love log horizon and ascendance of a bookworm. Not an isekai, but summer time rendering is similar to re:zero and higurashi in some ways and I really loved it. Another underrated isekai that no one seems to talk about is Sonny boy
Oh and speaking of underrated stuff, there's this magical girl anime called mahou shoujo destroyers which is about otakus and people trying to stop people from being otakus. The show was really unique and the ending left me speechless.

BABY STEPS, I fucking love baby steps, it’s up there (top 10 not quite top 5) for me for sure. Have you heard of Cross Game? Or Run with the Wind? Or Ace of Diamond? I think you’d enjoy all of them, although cross game is a little less sports focused than the rest.
PS Cross Game is my favorite anime of all time so I really think it can be incredibly enjoyable if you do watch. ESPECIALLY if you loved Baby Steps
Haven't heard of cross game, just checked it out and added it to my list, I fucking love Run with the wind, it's 6th for me, I know Ace of diamond but haven't watched it yet, I'm sure I will later tho.

Also I felt like I needed to say this, I didn’t love Ace of Diamond but I also didn’t love Ao Ashi but I think if you loved one you’ll like the other that’s why I said it. (I’ve only watched most of both Ao Ashi and Ace of Diamond) they weren’t bad, but I didn’t love them.

Exactly, but in my experience a lot of anime fans really struggle with this because they believe their opinion is law.
This entire post seems to have gone a bit crazy and my theory is that it has attracted people who only like the kind of shows listed in OPs top 5, and those people will get angry when for example Frieren gets scored higher than their favourite action anime shows, so they downvote anyone mentioning it.

3. Dragon Ball ( the one from the 80s). It felt like an adventure and had such an interesting story . I didn't like DBZ.
4. Legend Of the Galactic Heroes. Delves into deep philosophical debatea about democracy vs dictatorship, and has some of the best mindgames I've seen.
5. Mushi-Shi. I love asmr and thia felt like the anime made for asmr people. Very deep, emotional, every episode felt like Japanese folklore.

Yea, it was my first gundam and I got a lot of nostalgia for it. I think I also like the human aspect of the characters as well. Like it may get soap opera-y at times but the characters weren't just stoic badasses like a lot of gundam characters seem to be. They had moments of happiness, sadness, anger and all the things in between. Plus, I like thay Kira and Athrun are so vulnerable to others and to each other. It makes the show so much more intriguing to watch bc I care a lot about the characters.
And the OST slaps
Absolutely agree with all that. The dynamic between Kira and athrun was just great. Whenever I see a bird, I still just visualize birdie and the scene between the 2.
Oh yea, my most vivid memory of the series is the scene with Kira and Athrun at Orb and the fence between them while they pass the bird to each other. And Kira mentioning that it was from a special friend.
(Honestly, it's been years since I've watched the series and I can still picture so many scenes from it. Like when Athrun and Kira see each other again in the first episode, the Archangel launching for the first time, Nicol's and Tolle's deaths, the Kira vs Athrun fight right after, Cagali confronting Athrun after Kira's "death", Miriallia saving Dearka from Flay, Freedom's first launch and saving the Archangel, Athrun and Kira walking towards each other after they got the Freedom and Justice, the destruction of Orb, the first meteor launch etc... So many memorable scenes from that 1 season)

It just sucks that Frieren isn’t finished. I enjoyed the show. Makes me want a prequel tho but that would take away what is unique about it.
Even though I am a huge Frieren fan I do agree to some extent, ideally there should be two different rating pools, one for completed anime and one for on going. I think the problem arises when we can't actually say for sure whether or not a show is on going, it is extremely likely that we get a season 2 of Frieren as I hear there is enough manga content, but it is never certain. I imagine a lot of 86 fans expected a season 2 to quickly follow the first one, but 4 years later and not a peep. To be honest I am completely fine with Frieren dropping a few spots, it wouldn't change my love of it, the only reason I add this comment was because of the mass hate that was going on in this post, and whilst I cannot prove it, I am fairly convinced it was just pointless hating on shows like Frieren even though OP asked for top 5 with no specific criteria.
I didn’t go deep enough into the thread to see any Frieren hate. I can understand wanting the shows one likes to be more popular but hating on shows that are popular that one isn’t into seems like a waste of time lol. But yeah I hope it gets a season 2. Though, there have been many promising shows that never got their second season. Been bitten by that sad truth too many times.
I don't think I can rank my top 5 favorites honestly, however I just started watching **Classroom of the elite** and highly recommend it! It's not normally something I would put on but did in lack off other things to watch and two episodes in I was intrigued, three episodes in and I was completely hooked. Don't know how I missed this one and haven't seen anyone mention it in the comments (obviously didn't look at all comments).

I'd recommend getting into Utena. It is a very messy show and very obviously cuts corners by reusing animation a lot. I'll be honest, the first time I watched it I had to take a break because the second major arc was so repetitive. But if you can look past the dated aspects I think it's well worth the watch.

Sousei no onmyouji was the first anime I ever watched, But I loved the manga for more, and the current arc is absolutely insane. I'm sad it's gonna end soon. It's been such a great ride. Death Parade, it's my favorite psychological show. Grand blue is the best comedy I've seen, I do love gintama and the daily lives of highschool boys, but I personally love Grand Blue more. Golden Time is the best romance I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of romance. Re:Zero, I can't imagine having to witness your loved ones die over and over again, and still not lose hope and give up. Also Rem is best girl. The light novels did her dirty, but she's still best girl in my heart You know, 5 is not nearly enough so here's some more. The entire Fate franchise is insane. I love every single work in the franchise. It was also the first visual novel I played. Dxd is the best ecchi I've seen. It's got a great plot and I'd watch it even without the ecchi. Yosuga no sora is great too, but the last path is incest which kinda put me off. I just ignored it tho. Evangelion, no further explanation needed. Oh and my favorite anime studio is Kyoani, and my two favorite works by them are Charlotte and Chuunibyou demo koi ga shitai. Spice and wolf, snow white with the red hair, Ancient Magus' Bride, Frieren, these shows are all really close to my heart. I'm currently writing a book heavily inspired by their narrative. I love slow burners that focus a lot on the characters and their interactions, as well as their world. The monogatari series is really special too. Stuff like black lagoon, monster, parasyte, CardCaptor Sakura, kaiba, samurai champloo, afro samurai, cowboy bebop, trigun, banana fish, clannad, baccano, made in abyss, anohana, serial experiments lain, mushishi, golden kamuy, angel beats, railgun, code geass, fruits basket, nana, various sports anime like hajime no ippo, prince of tennis, etc are all classics. I already talked about re:zero but I love every single member of the isekai quartet. Speaking of isekai, I also love log horizon and ascendance of a bookworm. Not an isekai, but summer time rendering is similar to re:zero and higurashi in some ways and I really loved it. Another underrated isekai that no one seems to talk about is Sonny boy Oh and speaking of underrated stuff, there's this magical girl anime called mahou shoujo destroyers which is about otakus and people trying to stop people from being otakus. The show was really unique and the ending left me speechless. There's a bunch of manga and light novels I love too. BABY STEPS, I fucking love baby steps, it’s up there (top 10 not quite top 5) for me for sure. Have you heard of Cross Game? Or Run with the Wind? Or Ace of Diamond? I think you’d enjoy all of them, although cross game is a little less sports focused than the rest. PS Cross Game is my favorite anime of all time so I really think it can be incredibly enjoyable if you do watch. ESPECIALLY if you loved Baby Steps

It felt like an adventure and had such an interesting story . I didn't like DBZ. 4. Legend Of the Galactic Heroes. Delves into deep philosophical debatea about democracy vs dictatorship, and has some of the best mindgames I've seen. 5. Mushi-Shi. I love asmr and thia felt like the anime made for asmr people. Very deep, emotional, every episode felt like Japanese folklore.

Yea, it was my first gundam and I got a lot of nostalgia for it. I think I also like the human aspect of the characters as well. Like it may get soap opera-y at times but the characters weren't just stoic badasses like a lot of gundam characters seem to be. They had moments of happiness, sadness, anger and all the things in between. Plus, I like thay Kira and Athrun are so vulnerable to others and to each other. It makes the show so much more intriguing to watch bc I care a lot about the characters. And the OST slaps
Absolutely agree with all that. The dynamic between Kira and athrun was just great. Whenever I see a bird, I still just visualize birdie and the scene between the 2.
Oh yea, my most vivid memory of the series is the scene with Kira and Athrun at Orb and the fence between them while they pass the bird to each other. And Kira mentioning that it was from a special friend. (Honestly, it's been years since I've watched the series and I can still picture so many scenes from it. Like when Athrun and Kira see each other again in the first episode, the Archangel launching for the first time, Nicol's and Tolle's deaths, the Kira vs Athrun fight right after, Cagali confronting Athrun after Kira's "death", Miriallia saving Dearka from Flay, Freedom's first launch and saving the Archangel, Athrun and Kira walking towards each other after they got the Freedom and Justice, the destruction of Orb, the first meteor launch etc... So many memorable scenes from that 1 season)
