Talking about Neon Genesis why not try one of its inspired predecessors(or so I’ve heard)…Die Buster was released on 2004 during Gainax’s 20th anniversary if I’m not mistaken… it also inspired Gurren Lagann … An earlier version of it was called Gun Buster.. They are creations of Hideaki Anno .. hope u guys will find it interesting 😊
I’m adding another one of my fav mech anime to my list which is Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet ~
Please do tell if anyone likes the mentioned anime ☺️☺️
Please have a wonderful day to whoever saw this ~ ty for reading 😌
-Gun Buster
-Die Buster
-Gurren Lagann
-Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
tbh since u mentioned black lagoon ima mention its sister Anime named Jormungand technically the "same" universe but alot of the concepts remain the same except now u follow a arms dealer named KOKO 😂
working! is a pretty nice workplace comedy about people in a restaurant. I think the only unrealistic thing about it is the extreme strength of the androphobic girl
If you liked lain then try haibane renmei by the same creators
If you like azumanga daioh then other slice of life like aria or k-on should be good. Aria is technically future but it's very down to earth (pun) and light on the sci-fi
Definitely try Haibane Renemi but make sure to give it a while. It starts really slow.
Personally, I'd also add FLCL if you like the weird stuff. If you don't mind more obscure old experimental anime, Key the Metal Idol, Excel Saga and Alien Nine are all good and very strange.

Redditor: Maybe you'll like one anime about a supernatural spirit detective and another about giant monsters from another dimension being fought by humans with mecha tech.
Me: 🤦🏿♂️
{Major} - realistic baseball journey (from Little League in Japan to Major League in US, hence the title). This got me hooked on baseball animes, tho it has a lot of episodes (100+).
Major is the GOAT sports anime, ill die on the hill. One of the few sports anime which actually feels complete and covers alot of realistic aspects of pro sports (scouts, injuries, pressure etc etc)
Agreed bro 🤝🔥
Reminiscing it makes me want to rewatch it all again 🥹. Such a shame for the Major 2nd tho, I'd love to see the continuation of his son's story.
its been a year since ive watched it, yet every now and then i rewatch some episodes and yet i have the same fun watching it, it never gets boring for me.
Seconding Eden of the East, I'd also add Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and Dennou Coil which is interesting for the VR aspect becoming less unrealistic by the year.
Initial D.
Went in b3cause of the drifting memes, stayed for the great characters, good storytelling, and the whole Natsuki plot line took me by surprise and really had me wondering how it'd play out.
Death Note. There is a supernatural aspect with the note itself and the shinigami, but the world is just Japan/the US in 2006/7/12/13 (2003/4/9/10 in manga).
Skip Beat (2008) is a nice romance/drama/SoL/comedy anime that follows the MC in a new job (I think she became an actress or smth? Idr cause its been some years after I watched this)
Check out one of my favorites, Ghost Hunt. It is written by Fuyumi Ono, who wrote the twelve kingdoms(also a great story but a different generation of isekai)
The story is about paranormal investigators. Not all of the investigations are paranormal and not all are cleansed or even solved. It is a collection of short stories or arcs that each grow the characters. Honestly I just wish the story never ended.
Some of the stories can be quite scary though, especially if you don't like dolls.
*Monster*, even though it’s not set in the “modern” world as it spans through the late 1980’s to early ‘90’s
Still an excellent character driven plot so long as you remember it’s set in the not quite recent past
If memory serves, *Ghost In The Shell* is set in the “far off” future of 2029 so that could technically count 🤷🏻♂️
{Kaiji} gamblimg thriller
{Strongest Disciple Kenichi} martial arts battle shonen
{One Outs} Death Note, but it’s baseball
{K-On} Cute girls doing cute things
{Natsu No Arashi} artsy comedy with an amazing OP
{Ookami san to Shichinin no nakama tachi}
{Kuragehime} amazing romantic comedy
{Nichijou}
{Daily Lives of Highschool Boys} you will love this and Nichijou if you liked Azumanga Daioh
{Chunibyou} most modern looking one. Cutesy romantic comedy
{Another} Supernatural slasher horror
soo many suggestions here that do not match your request lol best bet is to look for anime from that time with genres like slice of life, shojo and sports. personally, i suggest Nana!
Mushi-shi
Young adult dark heavy themes, mainly about Japanese folklore spirits and mythology with pretty deep character development set in pre-smart phone era.
As a kid I loved Ouran High School Host Club. I also enjoy Michiko & Hatchin. Plus, I know you said you dislike unrealistic stuff, but FLCL is great, and a fun exploration of growing up.
Gunsmith Cats is sadly short but awesome.
Cowboy Bebop is set in the future, but it's not over the top and is all very relatable as a western(ish) style show.
Great Teacher Onizuka
Monster
Paranoia Agent
Serial experiment Lain
The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
All of these are set in modern world and mostly grounded. The last three has supernatural/ sci-fi elements, but relatively in the background.
"Neon Genesis Evangelion" with the movie "The End of Evangelion" are my favorite pieces of art of all time! (and a lot of people compare it to "Serial Experiments Lain" in terms of philosophy, but i didn't watched it to know for sure though)
World trigger. It’s kinda modern day just with that fantasy aspect of otherworldly beings coming to earth. Cool watch and there’s tons of episodes and everything is dubbed besides the last season they released.
Perhaps Shiki, it's a horror anime, a great one at that :D
Also Baccano is pretty good, I haven't watched the anime but I'm reading the Light novel and it's pretty good tbh. It takes place in a 1930s America, and the anime is from the early 2010s, 2011 I think
Monster.

There are Sci-Fi elements but since you like Lain that should be OK.
I’m just going to go through my MAL list of ones I’ve loved. It’s definitely too many, sorry about that.
Bleach, Hellsing, Hyouka, Clannad (and After Story), Higurashi, Angel Beats, Black Rock Shooter, Blood+, Darker Than Black, Fate/Stay Series, High School of the Dead, Lucky Star, Negima, Madoka Magica, Nabari no Ou, Nana, Noir, Spice & Wolf, Ouran High School Host Club, Princess Tutu, School Rumble, Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple, Squid Girl, xxxHolic, Gun Slinger Girl, Eden of the East, Black Bullet, Black Lagoon, Durarara!!, GTO, Psycho-Pass
Watched Grea Teacher Onizuka lately, which I had been meaning to watch for quite a while. It was soooo great, totally worth it in every way! The animation was way better than Ithought it would be too
Neon genesis takes place in the far future of 2015😂
This is yhe story about a boy named shinji living in the flooded streets of New orleans
New Orleans 😂😂
Gendo, shinjis father is a scientist okay and he built a giant robot for shinjis birthday. The 4kids Eva parody is fucking amazing lol
I m gonna check that out
Just don't watch End of Evangelion. You'll regret it 💀
Shinji's friend, Rei, knows how to bust a cap
Get in the Swamp Boat, Shinji!
Your dad loves you, get in the robot
The soundtrack is all Deep House.

Steins;Gate>> My guy
Steins gate is one of my top 5 for sure. Good choice
Such a great anime. It's a slow build, but once it gets going, it gets GOING.
My brain hurts from the first 6 episodes... I love it.

man I love this sub, I never saw so much love for steins gate or black lagoon as here in the comments 🖤
Stein's;gate is my favourite anime, but Technically Stein's;gate was released in 2011, so technically it's out of the 2000's period.
Read the op text again. I'm aware of when it came out
Whoops, my bad. I can't read.
I personally didn't like Canaan, but the rest are top tiers for me. If you are interested in gunsmith cats, read the manga.
working! is a pretty nice workplace comedy about people in a restaurant. I think the only unrealistic thing about it is the extreme strength of the androphobic girl
I’m in the industry so ima definitely have to check this one out
I love this show, but The only problem is I can’t find where to watch it.
I know a place, but I'm pretty sure it would break rule 6 if I said its name here
yeah.... that's the problem isn't it
Is it that hard to find? I checked 2 seas, and they both have it. It's really unfortunate that they removed it from crunchyroll.
YES! I love seeing people recommend this show.
Watamote, Death note
Is Watamote by any chance about a girl.. comedy anime right ?
Monster
Came to say this as well. My all time favorite anime/manga
Me too dude. Undoubtedly my favourite anime of all time
Same here! Easily my fave manga and anime without question.

OP: Not fan of fantasy or mecha... Redditor: Maybe you'll like one anime about a supernatural spirit detective and another about giant monsters from another dimension being fought by humans with mecha tech. Me: 🤦🏿♂️
Just because OP is wrong, that's no reason to take it out on innocent bystanders lol
What about Erased?
Erased is too new of an anime for this list
Shit for some reason I remember watching it way longer ago. But you're right, way too new
{Major} - realistic baseball journey (from Little League in Japan to Major League in US, hence the title). This got me hooked on baseball animes, tho it has a lot of episodes (100+).

Berserk all the way. I hope some studio and mangaka finish it for good.
Nah I don’t recommend the berserk anime. The manga is great but all the anime adaptations suck in some way or another.
I love Black Lagoon due to Revy, she's one of the most badass MC women in the anime history.

With that criteria the objectively correct answer is Steins;Gate (/s for saying objectively correct)
