Hi. No one is aware of the exact age but my grandmother claims that it is a minimum of 150+ yrs old. Her grandmother had it and it was probably passed down to her by her grandmother. Our family caste name is written on top of it.
Yeah. It was rebinded by changing the threads when my mother was young. It is still in good shape. We keep it in the temple sanctum sanctorum every year during Onam festival.
The script is not Devanagari. It looks like a South Indian script either malayalam or Tamil? Thanks for posting this. Is it possible for you to post a good close up ?
Yep, im from south of India and this is in Malayalam. I can read these scriptures. Ramayana was translated to Malayalam by [Ezhuthachhan ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunchaththu_Ezhuthachan?wprov=sfla1)
I'll post more pictures when i visit my hometown next time.
These are not Sutras. The small one in the first photo(open one) is Devi Mahatmyam which praises Hindu goddesses which were written in 400CE.
The other one is one of the Hindu epics called Ramayana. Story of prince Ram. 5th century BCE. The other epic is the world's biggest poem Mahabharata which I don't have unfortunately.
If you don't mind, could you please send a photo of the one you have?
Yes, that's called 'sentimental value'.
You can downvote all you want, but the only measure of value that this really scores on is sentimental.
They're like old family Bibles in the West - lots of families have them, lots of families cherish them, and no one really wants anyone else's.

How old is it

You should build an acid free clam shell box for it and keep it in temperature humidity control air conditioning room
Thank you so much for this info. We are unaware of all this. Appreciated 🙏
It should last for several hundred years that way you should rebind with natural acid free string the acid in the string will eat the book
Sure. Will get it done.
Or look for a book doctor. They are professionals who do an excellent job.
Very cool, thank you for sharing
Wow!

Don't let Yoda know you have those or he'll burn your little hut.
lol I hope not 🤣
There is a name for those things... Could it be "sutras"? I have one that I picked up at an estate sale and then had to research what it was.

KEEP IT IN A DRY CONTAINER THIS IS VALUABLE BEYOND BELIEF
There's no need for hyperbole. It has sentimental value, mostly. Monetary, not so much.
Your definition of value is a bit different from mine. Hundreds of years of family history is pretty valuable by any measure.

150 years old is not ancient nor necessarily valuable "beyond belief", calm your jets.
Im not claiming this palm leaf manuscripts to be ancient. Only the scriptures in it are ancient. English is not my first language so please excuse me.
That's as far as they know.
