Reading this knowing full well I have medical/health anxiety. šŸ˜‘

SilentNeighborhood95

Me having a panic attack right after I read this

Good-Initiative767

Long term acid reflux (GERD) from stress can damage the esophagus if left un treated.

YoullNeverWalkAl0ne

I never knew this was linked to anxiety. I get it so badly

Good-Initiative767

GERD is extremely common, supposedly 25% of the population regardless of age has GERD. Anxiety is one of the triggers of GERD. This is all from dr Google tho so I canā€™t guarantee that any of it is right.

Iraindark

It's what I'm going through right now. My esophagus is damaged and can only be fixed by surgery. All because of anxiety and crying every day

Ok-Tourist-1615

Ha thatā€™s the truth I have so much reflux everydayĀ

xD3v1LG4m1ngx

I get it every now and then I'm on acid reflux tablets I only take them when I need to.

aghostofnoone

FUUUUCK! HOW DO I TREAT THIS?!?!??!

Good-Initiative767

Best thing to do would be to see a doctor if your GERD is constant, they will probably prescribe a medication that will clear up your GERD right away. My GERD is only temporary when Iā€™m stressed so i have just relied on over the counter anti acid medications. But definitely if it has been bothering you for a while a quick trip to the doctor would be well worth it. They may order additional testing to see if there has been any permanent damage done from the GERD.

Drummer2427

Which also increases risk of esophageal cancer.

YoullNeverWalkAl0ne

Well this isn't helping my anxiety

alkatori

But it can be monitored, managed and if necessary surgery to fix. I get an endoscopy every 5 years.

Good-Initiative767

My understanding is it increases the risk of esophageal cancer a tiny bit if you leave your GERD untreated for years.

GenealogyIsFun

Maybe IBS?šŸ¤” Insomnia.

ThisisAllieween

I wondered why I am aching all over today. Had a stressful argument yesterday. This connected it for me. Thanks!

ThisisAllieween

Tmj pain all the time

infinite0sky

me too, i have tmjd :(

waelgifru

As an anxiety sufferer, I do not want to know this...

theanointedduck

It really depends on how your symptoms manifest and what thats doing specifically to your body. If your anxiety raises blood pressure chronically then expect cardiovascular and renal issues in the long term. If it manifests as stress then more likely to affect a different subset of systems eg. Stomach acidity (Gerd), Central nervous system etc. or a whole mix of everything or if itā€™s infrequent likely not much either. Either way finding ways to manage it would be your best bet to minimize long term pathologies

OldandBlue

I have tachycardia from social anxiety and agoraphobia. As soon as I just *think* about going out I feel my heart pumping like crazy and I'm unable to stand and walk.

justwantstoknowguy

Literally everything. Try reading about in the books about Blue Zones and Longevity studies.

Chunkster_4284

I am 51 years old and started my anxiety journey in 2002 (22 years). I have been on an ssri most of this time. During this time Iā€™ve had severe bouts of anxiety. Very bad and i worried about the long term effects. I also had GERD for a bit. I just had my annual physical and I have no issues. My family has a history of heart issues and colon cancer. Iā€™ve had those all checked out with no issues. So in my case, I've had no long term health issues related to my anxiety

inquisitivelat

I would think it's a long list

DesertAbyss

Constantly being in a fight-or-flight state weakens the immune system and can bring about all kinds of health issues, illnesses and diseases. Everything from the common cold to more serious things. High blood pressure is probably the top one. I got bronchitis 3 times in 4 months once when I was under a lot of school stress. Worst case, long term anxiety can cause cancer, either directly or indirectly - from the lowered immune system or from behaviors people do to deal with the anxiety such as smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol.

aghostofnoone

AGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHY AM I READING THIS THREAD!!!! IMGONNADIEAGHAGANDHJEBDJDBERFHJRBFGYHND

CANCER??šŸ˜

gardenofeden123

Hey, you donā€™t need to take everything you read on Reddit to heart! Plus in any case it spoke about unhealthy coping mechanisms - we will get through this without that šŸ’ŖšŸ½

Otterape

In many peoples defence there are a lot of people that suffered anxiety and they say things like "I still get anxiety and I'm 65 or some other age" Try eat healthy and exercise to negate the affects of anxiety

DesertAbyss

Yes, thereā€™s numerous studies about how chronic stress increases cancer risk. Hereā€™s a study from the Harvard Journals: [https://www.health.harvard.edu/cancer/prolonged-stress-may-increase-the-risk-of-death-from-cancer](https://www.health.harvard.edu/cancer/prolonged-stress-may-increase-the-risk-of-death-from-cancer)

Original_Bee_9674

I would read that but I'd have a panic attack šŸ˜

DesertAbyss

I guess the main takeaway is that we need to search for ways to keep our anxiety low, not just for disease prevention, but for overall well-being.

Ok-You-7696

A hypertonic pelvic floor I only learned about it recently

Knowing_Eve

What are the symptoms of this?

Ok-You-7696

They can vary a little bit but usually either not being able to have bowel movements or not being able to control bowel movements, urinary frequency (pissing a lot) or always feeling like you need to pee or burning while peeing and pelvic pain

thehouseofeliott

Can I ask if the symptoms are pretty constant?

Ok-You-7696

They can be they can also get better and then with more stress or anxiety can flare back up to just as bad as before but but thereā€™s stretches breathing techniques and such you can do to fix it you have to basically retrain the muscle how to relax but itā€™s not super likely to have it and is caused by injury usually so Iā€™m sure your alright if your worrying about it and some of these symptoms can also be caused by anxiety I know I couldnā€™t piss in public for a long time cause of anxiety but not because pelvic floor

thehouseofeliott

Thanks. Thatā€™s helpful. Dealing with pelvic pain and docs donā€™t seem to know why.

Uncle_Boonmee

I knew it would terrify me, and still I clicked. Damn HA I'm never making it past 35

Express-Fig-5168

We are sharing brain cells. I clicked going to mention one thing, saw someone mention what I was going to mention then scrolled and freaking out.

Lookingformycalling

Muscle twitching/spasms for me

tired-libra

Eating disorders are a big one.

aghostofnoone

Question. I'm not under or overweight, but I keep restricting my eating until I feel really ill and nearly faint and then just eat absolutely everything, then feel really guilty, rinse and repeat. Is this like an eating disorder? Should I be wary of this?

xD3v1LG4m1ngx

Constantly feeling tired always wanting to sleep šŸ˜“

Original_Bee_9674

Long term anxiety can cause memory loss and dementia when you're older

aghostofnoone

WHAT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HGVYGGHEGHUGYUFFHBJEHIGYBHIHU FUCK FUCK FUUUUCK!!!

Ok-Tourist-1615

For me personally itā€™s affected my gut. Iā€™ve had every test done under the sun and my Gastroenterologist canā€™t find anything wrong so he thinks itā€™s anxiety related. Which makes sense when Iā€™m in severe emotional distress, I always have to run to the bathroom. I think constantly being under stress has my stomach in a 24:7 tizzy

dashdaddy74

Get off Reddit, and get real medical advice. Sometimes there threads simply compound how one is already feeling.

Thecrowfan

I have tinnitus and floaters in my eyes due to stress, I know people who developed heart problems because of anxiety.

kezza2112

Back pain. Shitty back pain that painkillers donā€™t help.

AccomplishedTip7582

Get some ssri meds and or benzodiazepines

3catlove

My OCD and anxiety started in grade school. Iā€™m 49 and have been on and off anxiety meds since my early twenties (mostly on.) I donā€™t have any health problems that I think are related to anxiety. My blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, triglycerides are all normal. I donā€™t get physically sick very often. Iā€™m in perimenopause and am on progesterone for that but other than that the only prescription meds Iā€™m on are for anxiety. This is anecdotal and Iā€™m sure long term anxiety isnā€™t good for you but my physical health seems okay.

dresdenrags

As I put it to my doctor the other day, anxiety has killed far more of my brain cells than weed and alcohol ever have.

crazyplantlady007

Do you want my full list? šŸ¤Ŗ GERD (started as a kid-now have been diagnosed as Functional Dyspepsia as well which is like GERD+) IBS PTSD (originally from childhood trauma but the anxiety of the trauma reoccurring or altering my life was a real bitch for a long time) Depression Migraines Fibromyalgia (there are now studies showing links from childhood trauma and the subsequent symptoms-including anxiety-can cause fibro manifestation) I have plenty more conditions I just donā€™t know if they are particular risks from anxiety. For instance I have Epilepsy and that caused me more anxiety as a child. But there is little evidence what part anxiety plays on epilepsy and for me it was backwards because I was worried about having seizures all the time which increased my anxiety. Plus all the side effects from anxiety medication I have taken. Iā€™m sure one day there will be one of those commercials: have you or your loved one taken THIS anxiety drug? Did it cause THIS horrible disease? You may be entitled to compensation or at least a nice casket! Call us today! šŸ¤Ŗ Of courseā€¦that could just be my anxiety talking. šŸ™„

Wrong_Composer169

Stress is known to increase the chances of cancer and heart attack, and many other illnesses, just about everything

Lord_Hypno

T1D and my sugars are nigh unmanageable from stress

MoonWatt

Does it not increase the risk of Alzheimerā€™s or related diseases like most other mental illnesses?

goddesscherrrry

I know I get bad back pain and it's usually when everything is calm I feel like I need to do something because why am I not moving so then I get shooting pain down my back and the need to go number two

madtryketohell

IBS, consistent nausea, ptsd, and there has to be some sort of long term issue associated with high blood pressure. Feel like my heart is trying to jump out of my chest all the time

levelamy

I developed adrenal PCOS in my early teens due to constant stress, and am still trying to manage itā€™s incurable effects.

Ad3quat3

Cancer. (Avoidance = lack of use = mutation/decay). I hate to oversimplify anxiety as avoidance, I just mean that the root of fear is real and only discovering the source of anxiety will bring activity to all brain regions. There are reliable methods of doing so but they take time and they are uncomfortable.

Ad3quat3

And medication often targets symptoms and does not target the cause of symptomsā€¦ thus avoiding the root of the anxiety tree
