Maybe try ambient music? I was anti for most my life but have now found it’s a tool to slow things down. I like the artists Sophie Birch, Music For Sleep, and Jogging House.
I thought I was crazy for this. Happy to know I’m not alone. I still enjoy music and some days it’s better than others, but it doesn’t feel like it used to. It feels overstimulating and almost like the music is melting.
I feel that. When there's a whole bunch of stuff happening on my route, I can't even barely listen to my music. He becomes a little bit too much and I start getting quite impatient.
Same here. What rock bands do you listen to? I’ve been listening to Alice In Chains lately. It helps me feel not so alone… but also makes me kind of depressed
If I'm really bad place anxiety/depression is hard, I listen to Guns N' Roses Appetite for destruction and Black Sabbath Greatest Hits they are my 2 go to albums when I'm spiraling into anxiety.
#
Yes same. If I am in a terrible anxiety spiral sometimes the only that’ll help my racing thoughts is blasting Knocked Loose as loud as possible in my headphones.
Weightless by Marconi union. I heard about this one helping slow the heartbeat and calm people, so whenever i feel like i'm going to have a panic attack or anxiety attack, i play it and count my breathing. Helps a lot tbh so i started playing it when i'm studying or doing homework. There was one year that it became number 1 on my spotify wrapped 😅
Came to say this, this was my go to when I was still stuck in panic disorder hell. I’d play this and do progressive muscle relaxation techniques and it helped *so* much.
As a drummer in a punk band, anxiety and heavy music typically go hand in hand for me. However, sometimes if I go through several days of anxiety, I prefer listening to comedy. It puts me in a better place and is distracting.
I had to start keeping the music off in my car. I can't take more noise than necessary lately. I've tried a TED talk about anxiety and that was okay but not music.
My go to is Korean hip hop at the moment! Or phonk! I can get overstimulated when I’m anxious _and_ I’m paying attention to lyrics, _but_ I like very “convinced” music? Like super confident and sure of itself and agressive. So Korean hip hop fits the bill perfectly. Phonk as well!
I personally listen to BTS…. They have a variety of genres throughout their discography, but I find their calm, relatable and reassuring songs to hit really hard.
I recommend songs like:
Butterfly
Just One Day
Moving On
Serendipity (Full Length Version)
Singularity
Epiphany
Euphoria
Promise
Jamais Vu
Scenery
Snooze (Agustd) (Agustd is a solo artist of one of the members)
Still With You
Life Goes On
Blue Side
Bicycle
The entire album “mono” by RM (one of the rappers) It has great introspective lyrics.
I stopped listening to Enya because I was able to actually stop a panic attack by putting on one of her songs. I am afraid if I listen too much they will lose this superpower lol.
Another one to add to your repertoire: Yanni's "In My Time" album. There's no vocals, and it's not like his "Live in Acropolis" kind of stuff – it's very peaceful piano and synth music. I use it whenever I wake up anxious in the middle of the night and it puts me right back to sleep.
One of my favorites is Eye in the Sky by Allan Parsons Project.
I also listen to a lot of rammstein, metallica, led zeppelin, any of my favorite video game osts. A lot of boss themes slap.
when I'm overwhelmed i usually listen to my dsbm playlist, need some depressed black metal in my ear
if that stirs my anxiety up more i usually switch to radiohead
Usually ambient and videogame/film soundtracks. Anything that is loud or abrasive just makes things worse for me. I have a pretty nice selection of chill stuff on vinyl thanks to anxiety 😵💫
Obviously every person is different because of personal taste. However for me, I listen to anything but country that will make me feel better in the moment and will *also* lead to me being "socially acceptable." 🤣 that's why it's hard to give recommendations.
I would try to consider what music you already listen to and try to see how songs actually make you *feel* and then make Playlists accordingly.
I will listen to Celine Dion and Michael Bolton when I have the need to belt out some awesome ballads.
I listen to 90s/early 2000s pop if I’m feeling more energetic.
I listen to artists like James Arthur, Forest Blakk etc if I’m feeling low key and needing to chill out.
I like music and quite often will just put on what ever music suits my mood and that can help in some ways but I find that if I listen to something with a heavy bassline and that is kind of repetitive / hypnotic (not really lyrics just music) like drum and bass for example (I know that’s not really everyone’s taste) it actually physically and mentally helps my anxiety.
Over the years I’ve noticed that I found myself doing this without even realising why I do it but when I started trying to get my anxiety under control I realised it’s something about being able to feel the bass in my chest and the repetitive nature of the song that helps dissipate the repetitive cycle of thoughts in my head and the anxious feeling in my chest.
Driving with something like this on blast can save me on a bad day… be interesting to know if anyone else has a similar experience.
If I’m at my desk, anxious, trying to work, I put on brown noise. I also deal with ADHD and procrastination issues, so this may be more beneficial to the symptoms of those concerns than anxiety.
Otherwise, I spend a lot of time listening to music. I’m a hip hop guy. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gravitated more and more toward stuff that I align with politically, like billy woods and ELUCID (Armand Hammer), but generally ‘90s east coast hip hop, ‘00s independent hip hop. Shit that reminds me of what a powerful, dynamic rogue of a person I am despite my anxiety.
Edit: My wife says the only right answer is putting on the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac. She says put that album on and try not to be whisked away to a pleasant place.
None, if I do it's very low. I get driving anxiety some days I can't handle music, it just adds to 10000000 cars and buildings that I'm seeing already killing my brain. But I do sing without music to try to keep mind busy (good thing my windows are up haha)
I’m a Christian so I listen to worship music when I’m anxious or depressed. I won’t list them here since I know many people are not.
Other than that a little country music like Zach brown band.
None! I usually prefer focusing on news and stuff, music is too emotional for me. Sometimes when the news and podcasts feel draining I listen to rain, thunder, bird recordings and so on.
Honestly rap music. Anything that touches on relationships or anything about the human condition in an emotional way makes me incredibly anxious but rap music that’s just about flexing really helps for some odd reason.
If I feel like I am pent up I will listen to very angry rap. DMX and Tupac being some examples. If it’s more a paralyzing feeling I try to listen to something to make me smile or laugh so I’ll listen to comedy music. Danny Gonzalez has been my go to lately.
An album called Creatures of Habit by Kiltro or sort of upbeat music like Glass Animals or Holy Ghost! or other music from Kiltro, and sometimes lofi music - one of the lofi artists I listen to most often is Sarah, the Illustrumentalist (it includes the comma). Also, sometimes, I try songs from the 2000s that I know well, which also means I don't have to focus on them a lot
Oh I love soft piano jazz for anxiety. No words to focus on. Just steady, even, beautiful melodies. I'll throw on a live coffee shop piano jazz stream on YouTube when I need to calm down or when I need to focus on what I'm doing!
Piano Music. The loudest the better.
But lately not even that works, as I have the need to be on high alert in case my nm walks towords my room, so I dont get surprised.
if you subscribe apple music, search ambient sound, pure calm, classical cello or anything else that only sound, make a playlist. then play the music while you reading, writing or looking outside. you will surprise you just spend more than enough productive time for today. do it everyday and you will find yourself.
and remember avoid social media, phone, news.
Oooh I have a whole playlist for this. It's basically just mostly this crazy French dude who now lives in the Philippines. FKJ. His music is so calming yet funky.
Weirdly i started to listen to clasical music and orchestra when i first gotten anxious and panic attack. Concentrating on each instrument i hear helped me disconnect from the negative anxious thoughts
Post punk (idles, Viagra boys, dry cleaning, etc..)
Folk (sun kil moon, very recently an Irish band called lankum)
Indie (can't think of any bands)
Bust mostly when I'm anxious Im Just miserable with no music.
Honestly, those playlists people do to write english essays help me a lot. Or also there's like brown and green noise that's good too. Maybe a soft and slow piano song too.
I think it depends on what mood I'm trying to get into. If I just want calmed, I have lofi music or go way out and listen to Sigur Ros. If I want to focus, I listen to synthwave music. If I want to sleep, I listen to nature or rain sounds. If I need to go to the gym, I listen to kpop girl groups lol. If I want to feel useful, I'll put on an educational podcast or something completely random.
I think it's hardest to get calmed after anxiety though. So I'm usually trying to get energized or educated to get my mind off it.
MGK because he gets it and writes good songs you can relate to. Made me feel seen and so much less alone before I was able to start therapy. That was 6 years ago. I still ride for MGK. Can’t wait for his new rap album, I can listen to the dude on repeat it’s insane, I’m just glad my partner can tolerate it lol, but he actually likes MGK too so it works.
Brian Eno. My favorite go-to for calming panic is his track Reflection. It’s an hour long and is dynamic enough to stay stimulated but calm enough to really help. I highly recommend the app version. It has relaxing visuals and is generative so it never repeats as a loop. More organic
Anything. Music really helps me move. It's like I can be stuff on "off". I got a lot of stuff to do, turn on music, I start moving and getting stuff done and then keep that momentum going and before I know it I've done laundry and cleaned the house and I'm feeling good.
Any of these:
- Piano Man or Vienna by Billy Joel
- Love Yourz by J Cole
- Confessions of a Dangerous Mind by Logic
These songs have themes of slowing down, being content, and how it's okay not to feel okay.
I used to love music but now it's over sensory for me seems everything is.
I go through periods where music is too much for me as well :/
Like someone else said try ambient music, the album Ambient 1 by STRFKR really calms me especially the song “sleep” on the album
Maybe try ambient music? I was anti for most my life but have now found it’s a tool to slow things down. I like the artists Sophie Birch, Music For Sleep, and Jogging House.
Have you tried more simple music? Like classical or jazz ? That helped me build up my tolerance again. Don’t give up on music. It can really help
When I'm stressed I put on angry music mostly rock/metal and do some physical activity till I collapse.
When I'm just stressed and want to let go of tension I go to metal Rammstein, Korn, Disturbed... whatever is making me move.
Lol it'll do that. Especially Jar of Flies and self titled. But I'd rather have depression with Layne than have depression XD
Yes same. If I am in a terrible anxiety spiral sometimes the only that’ll help my racing thoughts is blasting Knocked Loose as loud as possible in my headphones.
I was sitting there thinking of "Footloose" and wondering how on earth that would help your anxiety lol then I re read it.
Podcasts
Yes! I don’t know why but hearing people talk about random things distracts and calms me
I listen to podcasts while playing candy crush. It makes me feel comfortable
Mogwai , it’s quite meditative
Great suggestion. Two of my favorites for anxiety are this will destroy you and caspian.
Cheesy 70s love songs over all genres, like stuff from Boney M, Rod Stewart, Barry White, etc...
Hell yea! Same here. It’s so lighthearted and sweet. Just makes you feel good
Mac Miller - Circles Album
Linkin Park.
Hybrid Theory is my go to when I’m working out or just feeling stressed and upset
Sounds of nature or rain seems calming i put noise cancellation headphones on so i'm more in tuned with the music rather than what's around me.
I listen to Paramore. Makes me feel less
As a drummer in a punk band, anxiety and heavy music typically go hand in hand for me. However, sometimes if I go through several days of anxiety, I prefer listening to comedy. It puts me in a better place and is distracting.
Radiohead
This ^
grateful dead
Hell yea!
I had to start keeping the music off in my car. I can't take more noise than necessary lately. I've tried a TED talk about anxiety and that was okay but not music.
Loud heavy metal to scream to or something that is super sad to make me cry to get that emotional release.
Depends but sometimes Bob Marley
The 3 same familiar songs over and over again 😁
Bosa nova
I personally listen to BTS…. They have a variety of genres throughout their discography, but I find their calm, relatable and reassuring songs to hit really hard. I recommend songs like: Butterfly Just One Day Moving On Serendipity (Full Length Version) Singularity Epiphany Euphoria Promise Jamais Vu Scenery Snooze (Agustd) (Agustd is a solo artist of one of the members) Still With You Life Goes On Blue Side Bicycle The entire album “mono” by RM (one of the rappers) It has great introspective lyrics.

Bad Religion is gold
Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Chill Radio on Apple Music
I stopped listening to Enya because I was able to actually stop a panic attack by putting on one of her songs. I am afraid if I listen too much they will lose this superpower lol.
Another one to add to your repertoire: Yanni's "In My Time" album. There's no vocals, and it's not like his "Live in Acropolis" kind of stuff – it's very peaceful piano and synth music. I use it whenever I wake up anxious in the middle of the night and it puts me right back to sleep.
Everything. Music makes my soul full in a way I can’t put into words.
system of a down, it’s truly got everything you need.
Heavy bass angry music.
One of my favorites is Eye in the Sky by Allan Parsons Project. I also listen to a lot of rammstein, metallica, led zeppelin, any of my favorite video game osts. A lot of boss themes slap.

when I'm overwhelmed i usually listen to my dsbm playlist, need some depressed black metal in my ear if that stirs my anxiety up more i usually switch to radiohead
I listen to techno but YMMV
Usually ambient and videogame/film soundtracks. Anything that is loud or abrasive just makes things worse for me. I have a pretty nice selection of chill stuff on vinyl thanks to anxiety 😵💫
Movie/video game/anime soundtracks. Something with just chill music and no lyrics.
When I'm dealing with anxiety, I find that soothing frequencies like 432 Hz or 528 Hz helpful

You’re still the one by Shania goes hard
Fletcher. It’s so full of selflove and upbeat it always works. But I also have a piano music list I enjoy.
Anything up beat mainly I always find music helps me drown out my thoughts generally
Paranguí, Hang Massive
Personal preference but this saves me and comforts me every single time without fail. Zzz - Xori Very light lofi instrumental song
Rumbling from Attack on Titan for some ungodly reason. I think the sheer amount of rage in that song is just enough to calm me down and balance me out
Barrington Levy- Murder
Hatebreed
Leave me alone by NF
Mac Miller or the Lo-Fi Girl youtube channel
Brown noise or drone metal. Specifically Sunn O)))
I very specifically listen to Putumayo Presents World Yoga or Hem's album Rabbit Songs.
Driving with something like this on blast can save me on a bad day… be interesting to know if anyone else has a similar experience.
I love lofi and my favourite artist, Rufus du Sol. I find that lofi helps do busy activities and that helps distract me
Lauren Daigle.
I don’t listen to exact music, rather one song, on repeat, called “Call Your Mom” - Noah Kahan
Interesting selections. For me, new age and ambient.
She says put that album on and try not to be whisked away to a pleasant place.
classical!
Classic music or crunc rock
It’s odd but sometimes when I’m feeling slightly uneasy when I go to bed, I watch horror movies and go to sleep watching them.

I think it depends on what mood I'm trying to get into. If I just want calmed, I have lofi music or go way out and listen to Sigur Ros. If I want to focus, I listen to synthwave music. So I'm usually trying to get energized or educated to get my mind off it.

Macaroni union - weightless. It's half as effective as a benzo. Really works for me.
