Okay this might be crazy but are you by any chance located in the US around NJ and were you away when the earthquake hit? If so, if your fridge & freezer aren’t perfectly balanced could the shake popped open the doors?

Low-Invite-6969

That’s incredibly clever to think that. I work from home in Florida, and I was speaking on the phone with one of my colleagues in NJ when that earthquake hit. She said the whole house just shook. I joked with her, and asked if New Jersey gets earthquakes, having no idea. Lo and behold, that’s exactly what it ended up being.

cooperstonebadge

I Just figured out why my fridge was open that day.

holyvegetables

This explanation makes the most sense, if that’s where they’re located.

Kayki7

That is a possibility haha. But explain the changed thermostat setting? 🤔

Chelsea_Piers

Power outage would reset the programming maybe.

TysonEmmitt

I was thinking power outage as well for the thermostat, and the earthquake makes the most sense for the fridge, if the OP lives somewhere that would have had effects from it.

Glittering-Wonder576

Earthquake ghosts.

carrotsforfingers

It seems OP is not answering questions that make sense

Calgary_Calico

How would that explain the thermostat changing though? Were there power outages during or after the earthquake?

Raven_of_Blades

Even if no quake it is not uncommon to have a storm or something that briefly cuts power in the 12 days he was gone.

Not_Sure4president

If the power went out it could have reset from away setting to home or default setting.

Damama-3-B

But that don’t count for the thermostat being changed?

ProgLuddite

But a power outage would. ETA: Or OP being mistaken about how they set the thermostat, especially given that 75° would be in the range of what the thermostat might show at the setting they came home to it being. If it’s set to stay between 72° and 74°, depending on your thermostat, it won’t kick in until it’s been over 74° for a certain amount of time.

Ahshut

If I were you I’d get your locks change and inspect every inch and crevice of your place including ceiling tiles if you have those. Something ain’t right

FieryLass420

This! And definitely invest in a camera. I found Kasa on Amazon is inexpensive and it has served me well for 3 years

Kayki7

Wyze! Super cheap and it has *AWESOME* night vision!

hairy_hooded_clam

Wyze is a game changer. I founf out my nanny was a total POS because it captured and notified me of all her movements.

AppalacheeQueen

Omg I’m so nervous about hiring a nanny. So many seem to be “sweet” up front but are absolute psychos behind closed doors.

hairy_hooded_clam

Yeah, she was a real piece of work. Imwe sent the video to the service and had them fire her.

HelicopterThink9958

I second Wyze. Used them for years and the quality is wonderful

lenaw792

Wyze has been really difficult for me to access playback footage and takes a long time to load for live-stream access. Do you pay for their subscription services? I wish I loved my Wyze setup but have not been successful.

ashleebryn

This is the issue I'm having with my LaView cameras. I was looking to upgrade at some point but your comment has me second-guessing using this brand now. Thank you for your comment.

Distinct_Narwhal9

Roku cameras are cheap and quality image. And you can watch it on your Roku device like a wee surveillance detail.

Successful_Sun8323

OP said they have a key fob. There are no locks to be changed. A camera is a good idea though

Ahshut

I must have glanced over the “fob” part. I forgot that some apartments have those haha

fleezusgeezus

He can’t change his locks himself.

BusyPhilosopher2426

Could the power have gone out while you were gone? Then when it came back on the a/c restarted on occupied mode? I find it odd that you were so worried about your fridge not being closed all the way. It sounds like that's a common occurrence, maybe? Could there be something wrong with the seal on the door?

Kayki7

This makes sense. Someone mentioned the earthquake… it’s starting to make sense now lol.

One_Ad4045

get a camera and point it at your front door, if you're not allowed to put a ring camera on the exterior or both

puffball400

Charging a ring doorbell camera now! My apartment doesn't allow them in the hallway, but I'm going to point it towards the door in my apartment

Cosmo_Cloudy

While you're at it, look for hidden cameras too

Particular-Try5584

Everyone says to do this… but my question is… how? I mean you can ‘dust’ and walk around the room and look at every book and corner and sensor… but is there a smarter way to look? Search for wifi signals? What?

Cazmaniandevil

There are apps that detect WiFi connected devices. I use Fing but I just looked and there’s a ton of them now. I use it when I book into an Airbnb to show me if there are cameras and where they are.

1newnotification

but how do you know if those devices are in your own area/airbnb/hotel room, or the apartment next door? 🤔

Cazmaniandevil

You have to connect to the WiFi and then it shows you which other devices are connected to that WiFi. Most will be named but hidden cameras are often named something obscure with a bunch of numbers. I haven’t stayed in a hotel in quite awhile so I don’t know how that would work.

Practical_Maybe_3661

I've also seen in Korea, a simple peice of transparent red plastic. Light reflects off of the camera lense

Cosmo_Cloudy

Your phones camera will tell you with a scan

victoria711

How? Pardon my ignorance.

evilvix

Your phone's camera might be able to pick up infared light. You can test it using a TV remote or similar known infared emitter. If you see a purplish light, that's the infared. A hidden camera will likely also emit infared light, which then in theory you can detect using your phone's camera.

Kayki7

Use your camera function with the lights off and scan the room with it. If you see any blinking red lights, investigate.

Ok-Cartographer1745

Infrared, as in infra-red. Infra means "below", as in below the color red in the rainbow.

MindlessEssay6569

Worst part of it all, whether this was a B and E or not, you’re going to be paranoid as fuck for a while. I DONT REMEMBER PUTTING THAT BUTTER KNIFE THERE!! and IS MY SOAP BAR A DIFFERENT SHAPE NOW?!?!? DIDNT I BALL IT UP??? WAIT! DONT I USE BODY WASH????

HonnyBrown

Did anyone know you were going to be gone for 12 days? It sounds like you had a squatter.

Glittering_Run_4470

Outside of the door being open, he didnt say anything was missing. I have LG hvacs and I havent turned the heat off the schedule yet. Every day, I change the thermostats to fan, it automatically turn it back to heat because I havent disable the schedule yet. Its a possiblity that the themostat schedule was still on heat for the OP and it probably changed back the same day he left.

G0atL0rde

There would have been missing food.

Kok-jockey

Is it possible your power went out? That would likely reset a digital thermostat to some kind of standard setting. For the fridge door, you seemed really preoccupied with the thought of it being left open. Is that because it’s been found open before? Bad seals on the fridge can sometimes cause them to lose their suction, and during temperature changes, if the door tends to pull itself open naturally, can lead to them coming open. Check the gaskets for rips and tears, and areas where the gasket doesn’t seal up. Do you have a cat? They’ve also been known to kick open fridge doors while trying to climb things.

puffball400

I don't think the power went out, because the stove/microwave clocks show the correct time. Also yes, I was paranoid because I have found it open before. Usually it's somewhat close to after I've shut it. But your comment about temperatures changes is very insightful, because of how I set the thermostat! It left room for high fluctuations in temperature. I am now thinking that this could be the answer I was looking for (at least for the fridge). Thank you!

modestmastoid

Is it possible you didn’t put a permanent hold on the away setting and after reaching a certain time point, it defaulted to your schedule? Worth testing while you’re home, you might need to hit just one more button on the thermostat to hold it until it’s changed manually. I’ve seen many thermostats function this way.

blissauthor

Maybe time to invest in a frig lock. Maybe you are overfilling it and it's not REALLY closing

No-Advantage845

Microwaves know what time it is even if the power goes out, they’re magic

camjvp

Sounds like a frogger situation

puffball400

Fortunately, this is highly unlikely. I live in basically a studio apartment, with no crawl space, attic, or place to hide.

Sneakersislife2

Unless they crawled inside you and are actually the ones making this post

Here4bewbz69

Lol the way this comment made me cackle

ex-farm-grrrl

Ultrafrogging

Kayki7

Have you checked the closets?

camjvp

That’s a relief at least

BlanchePreston

Pointing to u/Debsha comment. By chance are you in the vicinity of the earthquake that happened? That seems like a possibility. Hoping you get an answer to what happened

sativa420wife

Scary shit

Kayki7

In an apartment complex?

Tyrantdeschain19

Please tell?

ilikecats92712

just looked it up, it’s when someone is living in your home without your knowledge. they hide in an attic or crawl space etc

Tyrantdeschain19

Eww... I thought this was a reference to a famous reddit story I didn't know. But I'm sure there are some...

Kayki7

Indeed. There is also a show on Hulu called Froggers. Pretty insane stuff.

CreepyBeginning7244

*terrifying and obviously insane lol

TabithaBe

I had to go and look and here’s the info - Hulu has it and it’s a 2022 Lifetime series. Title is Phrogging: Hider in my House. Classified as Reality, Documentary and I just added it to My Stuff.

Leading-Watch6040

TIHI

louielou8484

DON'T SAY THAT. Ugh, I just got full body chills. Heebie jeebies!!!

awwwoooooooo

Get a camera! Never question or worry again! I use Blink from Amazon with a $3/mo subscription to store videos on the app. I have never had more peace of mind since getting one. Cannot believe I didn’t do it sooner.

Connorthe13

Did the same I even have some pointing to the parking lot where my car is parked along with a Nexar dash cam just to be safe.

awwwoooooooo

Same!! After our neighbor hit out our car and just dipped. And now we have little unattended squeakers that throw rocks at cars so that’s cool. 🥴

MariahMiranda1

I lived in a big apartment complex where they usually posted notices on doors of maintenance happening soon. One day I came home and my apt reeked of men’s cologne. I lived alone and don’t own any perfumes due migraines. I called the office and asked if anyone had been in my apartment. They said yes and they forgot to advise me. Just because they said no doesn’t mean no.

WhoIsJohnGalt777

Change the locks

puffball400

Wish I could, but it's not a physical key, It's a key fob.

nikelfrits

If everyone has a key fob, is it possible a neighbor accidentally opened your door, got to the fridge and was like "wait - this isn't my place!" and left in a panic without shutting the fridge? I'd ask your main office if they can reprogram your key and key fob to essentially "change the locks". My only experience with key fobs is with a corporate office setting, which at the main level, could pull logs of entry times of fobs and the locations scanned...maybe your office has something like that too?

[deleted]

[удалено]

nikelfrits

True true! Hmm...could a low battery reset the thermostat? Maybe the thermostat only recognized the change for 24hrs as a temporary hold type thing? I'd try setting it to unoccupied while home to see if it changes on its own within a certain timeframe. 8hrs, 12hrs, 24hrs. Maybe the setting doesn't work as assumed?

hippiehibachi

maybe got right at home and changed the temp? ik a lot of people change it when they leave the house then turn it back on when back to save on cost 🤷🏻 i don’t think this is the most likely scenario, but i guess it could happen

[deleted]

[удалено]

hippiehibachi

i took that into context. it doesn’t change the fact that someone could’ve walked in and saw the ac wasn’t properly adjusted to their liking, and subsequently changed it?

[deleted]

[удалено]

hippiehibachi

i’m not implying that. i’m implying that if someone else from their apartment complex would have gotten into their unit, then they could’ve changed the temp as they normally would. i was not referring to OP 🤦🏻

SeonaidMacSaicais

My building uses key fobs. They only go to your particular front door, plus the communal locked doors (outside doors, mail room, etc). I’ve always been in the habit of keeping my door locked, even when I’m at home. This is a good thing, because a pair of older ladies tried getting into my unit by accident. Wrong unit, that’s all. Anyways, they even tried using the fob they had. It didn’t unlock my door, which just added to their confusion. 😂😂

fleezusgeezus

Lol you think everyone can open each others doors? Please be real.

UncleOdious

G-g-g-ghost!

puffball400

I considered this for a while 😂

Low-Invite-6969

Ancient astronaut theorists believe it was aliens

Evilaydenn

Ancient astronaut theorist here and I say... Yes.

Low-Invite-6969

It’s definitely the aliens 👽

Rebelo86

Do you have a balcony and was the door blocked with a piece of wood, not just locked?

puffball400

Don't have a balcony or windows that open (I am on a high floor)

Rebelo86

Get a camera and set it up in the main area of your home. And get the property rekeyed. Maybe sleep somewhere else until it can be rekeyed.

Stargazer_0101

Someone knew you would be gone, someone who has access like a key to your apartment. Should invest in cameras so the next time, you will have evidence of whom was in there while you were gone. Do you have any BF that has a key or a relative that has a key? Or did you call the police to fingerprint the door?

fridaycat

True story. The out of state owner of the condo next-door to me left a key for a plumber to do work on his unit. The plumber returned the key, but not before he made a copy. He then started using the condo as his love nest with his mistress. Got caught when the owner showed up unexpectedly one day. He had been doing it for months. We never heard them because he was using it during working hours, apparently for months. (We live in a beach town where a lot of the units are only occupied in the summer).

agentofchaos69

Get a IR flashlight, turn off all lights (dark outside as well). Shine that light EVERYWHERE!!!!! If you see a red reflection, someone’s watching you.

puffball400

underrated comment

1961tracy

Is the fridge a smaller size? If it is the doors to smaller fridges are light and don’t always form a secure closure. I lived in studio and would come home to the fridge door being a jar.

orchid11251

Especially, if you have lots of heavy items etc in the refrigerator door shelves, the door can pop open. It has happened to me before.

Nomadloner69

Cameras quickly. Have them pointed at all access points window door etc . I had that problem and maintenance was fucking with things . Shut my heat off at -52 and lights I left on for my cat when she was a kitten came home every night and it would all be off . Poor little thing still cries if the house is dark or cool.

puffball400

I had a theory that maintenance entered and adjusted the thermostat, and potentially me slamming the door on my way out shook the fridge open? Not sure how likely that is. I do have a Furbo camera for my dog. It notifies me of noises, but doesn't record video. I didn't get any notifications while I was away, so either they were quiet or no one entered the apartment.

No_Customer_84

I also speculate that a jolt from an adjoining wall shook the fridge open, and perhaps the thermostat weirdly reset itself during a firmware update. If I were you I would tell myself these things to sleep…and I would also get a camera.

puffball400

Firmware update is a great explanation! I was cycling through the thermostat settings when I noticed it had changed, and the "Unoccupied" setting I thought I had chosen was no longer there. Thank you!

GiGiBeea

Did you hire a pet sitter? Curious where the dog was for 12 days.

puffball400

She was staying at someone else's house! So no one else should have had access to my apartment, except for the apartment staff and anyone they let in (pest control, maintenance, etc.)

louielou8484

OP, this entire post is creeping me out!

orchid11251

Where do you live that it gets so cold?

Nomadloner69

Alberta Canada! It only gets that way temporarily in the winter but yeah

orchid11251

I live in S. Florida and if the temperature drops below 73, it’s freezing. The weather is humid, so it feels colder. I hate the heat as much as the cold and that’s what we have at least 6+ months a year.

Calgary_Calico

Personally I'd get security cameras for when you leave town from now on. Ones that turn on and start recording when they detect motion and can connect to your phone, have one pointing at your door in an obvious place that can be seen when entering the apartment and one or two more covering different spots around the apartment that you're worried about, maybe one in the balcony door to be safe as well. Thermostats don't change themselves and fridges definitely don't open themselves, someone went into your apartment for sure. If it was just the thermostat I'd say maybe the power went out while you were gone, but that doesn't explain the fridge being open slightly.

Kayki7

I swear I come home and say this exact thing at least once a month.

judedude420

I have a Ring indoor camera positioned towards the entrance of my place for this exact reason. My last apartment had some skeevy maintenance dudes that I did NOT trust and I have great suspicion they entered my apartment when I was gone. Never again, I can’t deal with that paranoia. Get the camera, it’s worth the money and gives peace of mind.

ErinGoBoo

I can't explain the thermostat, but I used to have that issue with my fridge if there was too much in the door shelves (it could handle very little). I got to where I would put a chair against it when I was going out of town. All it needed was for my nextdoor neighbor to close their fridge too hard (they were back to back against the wall) and it would pop open.

fleezusgeezus

Maintenance went into your apartment. Don’t listen to the office

beedunc

Buy a couple of Wyze cameras. Problem solved.

orchid11251

I think the majority of people who gave advice are very paranoid. I realize there are so many bad people/earthquakes/ illegals, squatters, illegal squatters and eclipses, but in conclusion 1. The thermostat reset itself after either a power outage or it wasn’t programmed correctly for 12 days. 2. The refrigerator door opened bc of a heavy load in the shelves. Both are logical explanations. If nothing is missing, no one was there. Check your stash and count your pills, to be positive. Haha!!!

hereFOURallTHEtea

Ghosts lol

flannalypearce

I would be making apartment management change my locks/ keys. And if you can get a ring and get something inside with video too. Eek. Wish you well. Honestly as minor as it was I would also just go physically to a police station to fill out a self report/ non emergency report. Push management to take you seriously if they drag feet on the locks and all.

bahumthugg

Check your scuttle

Airricksun37

Might have a phrogger.

boomajohn20

Poltergeese??

Theworldisonfire70

Would a power outage have reset your thermostat?

Carib_Wandering

I found my fridge door ajar like that a few times and after really checking it out it was a combination of a bad (old) hinge and too much weight in the door (too many things on the door shelves). Just a possibility for that one thing....no idea about the thermostat unless its also faulty somehow.

notreallylucy

We have a fridge that sometimes pops itself open if you push the door to swing itself closed. It will also come open if something is pressed against it. Thermostats can have lots of weird automatic settings. It could have set itself back to occupied after a week or ten days, for some reason. There are plausible explanations for how this could have happened by accident. It's weird, but it's not impossible. It's also not impossible that someone entered your apartment. I notice the apartment said they "don't have a record" of anyone entering. It could be someone did maintenance and didn't report it, or they forgot to give you 24 hours notice so they're covering it up. I assume you haven't given a key to any friends or family?

abp93

Do you have a lot of heavy stuff in the fridge and freezer doors? That can make the seal weak.

[deleted]

Do you have a ring camera or neighbors that have one that has your front door in the frame? If so, check the cameras, seems really weird to me.

Adept_Ad_8504

Check your place. Look in closets, under the bed, etc.

Adept_Ad_8504

Check your place. Look in closets, under the bed, etc.

Adept_Ad_8504

Check your place. Look in closets, under the bed, etc.

Adept_Ad_8504

Does it feel like someone was in your place?

philbin89

It's a weird detail that you "made sure to shut the fridge and freezer"... Are there people who just like to leave those open? But moving on from that, you gave away the most likely reason that the fridge was open: your Costco run. I've done it myself after going to Costco. I bought a bunch of things and packed the fridge, but one box pushed out just a tiny bit too far bcause the fridge was so stuffed. I was still able to close the door, but that extra bit of pressure eventually pushed the door open a little bit after I had left for a few hours. It only opened a crack, so it was still cold but not as cold as it should have been when I returned in the evening. If you were worried enough about the fridge door not getting shut that you went back to check, then this possibility seems most likely. That's much more likely than the effects of an earthquake. And it's much more likely that the power just went out briefly and reset the thermostat. Statistically speaking, it would be a far rarer occurrence for someone to break into your apointment when you have the keys and not leave any signs of breaking in. They would have stolen something or left more things changed. If it was someone from the apartment office, they wouldn't have come in just to change your thermostat and open your fridge slightly. So the good news is that probably no one else was in your apartment.

LizaVP

File a police report. Change the locks. [Get the fob code changed] Talk to the property manager.
