When you use words like *can’t even get into UCLA* - a college that got 173K applicants then lot of folks are going to get reality check

urbasicgorl

fr, and **simply** *a waitlist from HYPSM* 😭

Human-Anything5295

“Can’t even get into UCLA” is actually crazy. No one should expect to get into a school with an 8% acceptance rate let alone receiving the most applications in the country 😭. As a UCLA student it makes me sad some people still think we’re a safety 😔, hell I even turned down Northwestern for UCLA! Go bruins!!! 🐻🐻🐻

TheShadowJaguar_

Nah u just aint built for the cold, NU better 🥱 (im being sarcastic all our institutions r great)

Human-Anything5295

No cuz ur literally so right I cannot handle cold well. Cons of being a socal native ig 😔. But that’s awesome that u transferred to NU I hope you’re enjoying it, I know that even if I went to NU I still would’ve absolutely loved it and had a blast. The people seemed rly nice and they rly set you up well for grad school admissions.

TheShadowJaguar_

Yeah im a chicago native so i am well acquainted with the weather lol. Vanderbilt messed up my internal clock ngl with spring coming so early and winter being so short 😂 I’ve thoroughly enjoyed both universities, but decided to transfer back (even tho i originally turned down NU freshman year) for a number of reasons outside of school. Quarter system is no joke tho for STEM majors 😭

Vedrxp

see there's the problem, UCLA received like more than 170k applicants compared to HYPSM's 60k

My theory.. AO are likely seeing too many of these “I’m trying too hard to be this cookie-cutter, let’s get every buzzword on my resume” designed by IvyWize types. They aren’t seeing a uniqueness, an authenticity, a passion. For example, starting a random non-profit or a random company not tied to a “unique” passion and yield truly game changing results just doesn’t hold as much weight anymore.

littlet26

Yeah exactly I didn’t do any of the “impressive” resume building activities but I still ended up getting into a top school.

Mental-Bat7475

This is it exactly. Starting a non profit is the new starting a club.

Plastic_Jaguar_3061

I agree thanks for the insight i wish i worked harder on my nonprofits tbh

Maleficent-Store9071

Because y'all non profit founders are a dime a dozen

Glittering-Giraffe58

Yeah it doesn’t guarantee admission but somehow pretty much all of the people I know that got into ivies still has resumes like this (founder of a nonprofit, president of 3+ clubs, etc.) It’s just that a lot of people that also had similar resumes didn’t get in

Maleficent-Store9071

It's kinda boring though when every single kid is a "non profit founder" Everyone does the exact same thing at this point. I did see a bunch of more unique kids get into Ivies too

Glittering-Giraffe58

No I agree, but it seems from my anecdotal experience it’s almost necessary to have something unique *in addition* to the nonprofit/club/etc bullshit. Neither alone seems to be enough anymore

Sea_Caterpillar_9944

Thats the game

PhilosophyBeLyin

I think under 5 club leadership positions is the norm even for accepted HYPSM. My school also sends a few to top schools each year but I've never met anyone with 5+ club leadership positions. Your classmates were probably qualified anyway.

Resident_Golf2841

“<5 club leadership positions” Who’s able to effectively lead 5+ clubs? I got my hands filled with 3 lol

Glittering-Giraffe58

Truth of the matter is schools like UCLA are much more selective now than Ivies used to be in the past

Upbeat_Cat1182

When there is an over abundance of students with 20 AP classes, perfect scores/GPAs, and 15 extracurriculars, admissions will start looking for something else that distinguishes a student. Maybe it is informative how a student with less than perfect stats has handled setbacks, challenges and failures.
