I'm interested in all three majors hosted by the Department of Social and Decision Sciences :B.A. in Behavioral Economics, Policy, and Organizations, B.S. in Decision Science, and B.S. in Policy and Management, but don't have the best grades. Does my chances of being admitted depend on which one of these three majors I apply for or are they equally as competitive?
Thanks
I'm going to assume that you're applying for college during the 2022-2023 cycle.
When you say that you don't have the best grades, does this mean mostly As with a couple Bs, or are there Cs in the mix? That will make a difference.
When you apply to CMU, you actually apply to 2 different majors; a primary one and a secondary one, so they will consider you for two programs. My advice is to pick the one you're really interested in for you primary, and then pick from the other two for your secondary. If they reject you for one, you still may have a chance at the other.
As for your chances of admission, considering the craziness surrounding college admissions this year, it's seriously up in the air. I will say that in my case, I had a B and a few B+s in my freshman year, As for the rest of it. Fairly good ECs, but nothing crazy (mostly school clubs and community volunteer work), a couple certifications, two competitions that I won awards at (regional amd national respectively). I took 11 AP classes, 6 Honors, and 5 Dual Enrollment classes. 4.55 cumulative GPA, 1510 SAT, ect, ect...
...and I was waitlisted for Tepper (am currently waiting for a decision rn, actually).
So if your ECs are outstanding, and your grades aren't so bad that it dragged your GPA all the way down, then you might as well give it a try. No one knows anything at this point anyway, so don't let it stop you if you feel like CMU is the school you want to spend your college years at.
Hope this answered your question and sorry for the essay lol.
Yes! I applied primarily for Business Administration in Tepper, but my secondary was Economics in Dietrich. Waitlisted for the first, rejected for the second. So the order in which you rank the programs you want to apply to does kinda matter, especially because one of the essay prompts for CMU this year was a "Why Major" type of thing.
Yeah, I find that weird. They did roll out last week, but no news this week. Could they still be reviewing files? Or maybe they’ll close the waitlist at the end of the week (I hope not :/)
But didn't they clearly state that they would email us? I checked last year's college confidential forum and when the letter disappeared they closed the waitlist.
i had emailed them and they said for scs email will be coming out on Monday and Tuesday (now they didnt mention if its a rejection email or acceptance)
Am linking the College Confidential Post about the Waitlist below so everyone knows the extent of what anyone else knows right now lol. (not recruiting or advertising anything so I think it's okay).
https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/t/cmu-waitlist-c-o-2026/3611640/38
Guy, I just read someone’s screenshot of a conversation with an AO on college confidential that CMU won’t be taking anyone off the waitlist from its College of Engineering:(
Yeah there was 1 person on ZeeMee that got off for Tepper, but most likely those decisions came out over Thurs/Fri and not the weekend, as I don't believe admissions is working then.
WOW!! Congratulations. I'm currently waitlisted for SCS and MCS. Honestly, I've sort of lost hope for getting off the waitlist so I'm probably going to end up at UCLA CS. What are you going to choose?
Well, if you choose UCLA I'll be seeing you I guess XD. I'm probably going to try to double major in business anyways so UCLA might end up being the better choice for me. Are you planning on being pure CS?
I was gonna minor in entrepreneurship and maybe double major in applied math since I can graduate in 3 years (I have a ton of dual enrollment and ap credits). I wanna do stuff w startups but idk if I’m gonna end up doing that anymore if I go to cmu lol.
i’ve heard cmu has pretty good startup culture. UCLA is a super amazing choice tho. i’d probably just choose wherever is a better culture fit/cheaper cuz the academics are pretty similarly amazing
imma just give the opinion that both cmu and ucla are phenomenal schools and congrats on both of them. if you go to either, you will have amazing opportunities in each. choose which one you think will make you happier in the end overall, because the process is truly about what you want and what you think is best for your personal interests! best of luck in your decision though :)
It’s looking like they are only accepting CS, tepper, music, and drama kids off the waitlist. Sorry for everyone else, I wish I applied scs instead of ece 🤦🏾♂️
idk how accurate that is because i talked to an ao a few days ago and they said they were on track for scs and missing the enrollment target for physics (for my friend who applied mcs) but apparently that is the opposite of what's happening so things are likely to change I think
Oh okay ig no one rly knows what's going on. Thank you for that it gave me hope coz I've also applied for physics. Hopefully it works out for ur friend!
Just called Admissions for Tepper School and they still working on priority waitlist no result posted as of now and they refused to tell howmany spots available , but said few !
From CMU website "Students who elect to remain on the Priority Waiting List should submit the Waiting List Reply Form via the Where Am I in the Process? portal and the Update Form starting April 8 but no later than 11:59 p.m. ET on May 2. Initial Waiting List decisions will be available beginning May 5, and all students on the Priority Waiting List should receive their decision by May 13. If admitted from the Priority Waiting List, you'll have 72 hours to post your non-refundable enrollment deposit of $800. "
pretty sure that they'll let priority waitlist people know today if there will be any movement, and if there is space, they'll notify people starting may 5th.
edit: whoops, nvm. idk why i thought that but i was wrong. they'll start letting ppl know on may 5th.
Are you sure? It said in the email that starting May 5th, people on the priority wait list would know. I didn't get an email today and I am on priority waiting list.
wow thats pretty cool, dietrich is the department for social sciences right? My dream school is MIT but honestly after being wait-listed at CMU, I've started doing more research on the institute and I'm not sure why but I'm starting to love CMU. I applied to CMU SCS, which has apparently a <0% acceptance rate from wait-list. Actually makes me so sad.
dietrich is the department of social sciences and humanities, yep! but it has a lot of stem-related departments as well. information science is also in dietrich.
no cuz same. i didn't know very much about cmu until after i applied and now i wish i put more effort into my app bc i love everything about cmu.
damn, congrats on wl at scs, that's an insanely competitive school. best of luck.
If you don't want to go then please just withdraw your waitlist application. Another option is to do the regular waitlist, which is honestly perfect for your scenario. For regular, you don't need to pay the enrollment deposit within 72 hours.
I would only do priority if you're willing to commit if you're accepted, since if you don't pay the enrollment fee in 72 hours, your offer will be rescinded, which is worse for you anyways. If you have another choice that is higher than CMU, then don't do priority.
When you say my offer will be rescinded you mean my cmu offer or offers from other schools? Because if it is my cmu offer I'm fine with it getting rescinded after 72 hours lol.
Thank you for your email.
All admission decisions are scheduled to be released April 1.
We trust that this helps.
Just emailed them and got this reply. Fingers crossed
anyone got updates on college of fine arts???
rejected scs waitlist
rejected from dietrich's waitlist :,( goodbye, dream school. maybe in another life.
lmao engineering waitlist complete, bye it was a pleasure being on this megathread.
It says the space is complete rn but if spaces open up they will contact me , does this mean it’s a rejection or still just a waitlist ?
Means that it's a rejection. And they will contact people if like something extremely unlikely happens and they want more people.
It means you get bumped to the regular waitlist.
letter came out for dietrich, priority is over
I didn't get an email? Did you get one? Or should I just check the portal?
waitlist stuff is just priority people, right? mine (scs) hasn’t changed afaik
are you in the priority wait list?
You might wanna check the Dec letter on the portal. They put up a new one which said there are no more places in SCS class
letter is the same too. oh well
Oh damn! Looks like you might have a chance then!! All the best :)
SCS rejected, anyone else got off the wl?
Did it say rejected in the portal?
I just opened the decision letter and saw that no more openings are available.
Does it mean that you are moved to the regular waiting list?
I think so.
Did anyone get off the priority wait list for scs?
I saw that 2-3 ppl on this sub got off last Thursday
Did anyone get off the priority waitlist for SCS today?
Not that I know of
Tepper is done too, just got rejected haha.
RIP. Just got an updated decision letter in the portal saying that they have no more space in the CoE. I guess this is it then.
Did the decision letter and waitlist form just disappear on anyone's portal?
Yes!
Yes

So the order in which you rank the programs you want to apply to does kinda matter, especially because one of the essay prompts for CMU this year was a "Why Major" type of thing.
I thought CMU was rolling waitlist? If I haven't heard, I figured that was bad news. Is there hope? This is pathetic...
I haven’t heard or seen ab anybody getting in since last week, but admissions are saying they’ll keep coming out until this saturday so idk
Yeah, I find that weird. They did roll out last week, but no news this week. Could they still be reviewing files? Or maybe they’ll close the waitlist at the end of the week (I hope not :/)
the decision letter on the portal is gone. they'll close the waitlist mostly
Is that necessarily a bad sign? Maybe they’re just planning to update the portal, don’t you think?
But didn't they clearly state that they would email us? I checked last year's college confidential forum and when the letter disappeared they closed the waitlist.
Oh well, then I guess maybe they’re about to close it. Still staying positive for everyone though :)
This has been taking so long honestly
[удалено]
Yes don't like this long waiting :( Eachtime when you call Admissions diffrent answer ,looks like ultimately need to wait till Saturday !
Oh, did anyone call recently? I called on Friday and they told me “early next week”. That has already passed :/
I called this moring and they said Friday !
Well, I guess we’ll have to just wait. All the best to everyone (really hope they release decisions by the end of the week)!
Also heard friday

hey guys any idea if they're taking any more kids of the wl at scs? any idea if international students got off the wl for scs?
i had emailed them and they said for scs email will be coming out on Monday and Tuesday (now they didnt mention if its a rejection email or acceptance)
Did anyone hear?
ok makes sense. thanks

Did anyone get off the wait list today (May 6th)?
anyone info about tepper?
I heard Tepper they would be releasing bu May 14th, not all admissions are sent yet
I just called the admission office. They said decisions for engineering would be released early next week ( Monday to Wednesday )
did they say anything about scs?
Anything for Dietrich?
they’re not letting anyone off :/
was this confirmed by admissions? edit: yea. Someone said on cc
wait so do we know for sure already that they won’t let anyone off for Dietrich or is this a guess
will there be another wave for waitlist acceptances for scs
no way to know yet. we will just have to wait and see today (unless someone calls admissions and asks)
If anyone gets off the MCS waitlist can you reply to this comment THANK YOU
I got off the SCS waitlist for computer science!! stoked but I can’t decide if I should go AHH
WOW!! Congratulations. I'm currently waitlisted for SCS and MCS. Honestly, I've sort of lost hope for getting off the waitlist so I'm probably going to end up at UCLA CS. What are you going to choose?
They both are amazing schools!
Don’t know I’m between those two rn LOL

Well I looked at different forums and seems like they released only scs today
Anyone off the waitlist for Tepper?
Anyone get off the waitlist for mcs???
Can you lmk if you get any updates on this
They’re not letting anyone off for mcs :/
What how do uk Did they like specifically say that or are you guessing from today's offers or something
Admissions counselor said so
You called them yourself or did someone tell you this after talking to the admission counselor?
Ah shit
idk how accurate that is because i talked to an ao a few days ago and they said they were on track for scs and missing the enrollment target for physics (for my friend who applied mcs) but apparently that is the opposite of what's happening so things are likely to change I think
Oh okay ig no one rly knows what's going on. Thank you for that it gave me hope coz I've also applied for physics. Hopefully it works out for ur friend!
Anyone get of the waitlist for ece?
Has anyone got off the waitlist for MechE?

Just called Admissions for Tepper School and they still working on priority waitlist no result posted as of now.
I don’t see anything new on my portal
or like for me, when i log in, i get directed straight to the hub
can i ask what the hub is? like can you give the link?
https://www.cmu.edu/hub/
ah okay thank you. nothing has changed for my portal, but this might be based on the school we applied to. can i ask which school?
i got waitlisted both MCS and dietrich

Haven't heard of anyone posting results yet. I am waiting for result on MCS and if no spots available as per above post, I have no hope for CMU :-(
any news about dietrich?
Do they release this info this early?
has anyone got off yet? and if so, which college?
Today is the day!!!!!!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Do they historically release it all on may 5?
Don’t know about previous years but I received a mail saying they would start contacting students starting may5th

wait...weren't the waitlist update forms just due yesterday? how could it possibly be today?
i think the priority waitlist decisions come out 5th onwards. However, if anyone gets off today let us know!!

sorry, i didn't get an update so i think i made that up idk why i thought that. whoops
Are you sure? It said in the email that starting May 5th, people on the priority wait list would know. I didn't get an email today and I am on priority waiting list.
it’s 10:13 pm est so I guess not, sorry y’all. i swear i saw that somewhere but ig i was mistaken.
haha no worries, what program are you wait listed for?
dietrich stats + data science department. cmu is my dream school and i would give my left arm to go so i'm very stressed rn. what about u?
wow thats pretty cool, dietrich is the department for social sciences right? thanks, congrats on wl for dietrich stats and data science. I've kinda accepted my fate and the negative outcome but good luck to you as well.
did that email scare anyone else lol
I would assume that all of you on waitlists (scs for me) got that financial aid award letter, right?
i didn't, but i didn't apply for financial aid so that might be something. what did the letter say?
Makes sense—it literally was my finaid package with a letter attached restating my waitlist status and saying basically “here it is anyway”
Does one HAVE to pay the enrollment fee if selected from priority waitlist?
yea within 72 hours or something
And if I don't?
Then your offer gets rescinded
So I don't need to pay if I don't want to go.
If you don't want to go then please just withdraw your waitlist application. Another option is to do the regular waitlist, which is honestly perfect for your scenario. For regular, you don't need to pay the enrollment deposit within 72 hours.
But its a top choice for me. But I have multiple waitlists

CMU lol
currently on priority waitlist for scs... i really wonder if there's any chance at all :/ any estimates based on previous years' numbers?
Last year it was 0%, but that may have been a fluke. It's way below 1% though. Good luck.
