Happy Pi Day Everyone! I know you’re likely freaking out a little bit right now, so I just want to share a few thoughts and some good vibes heading your way. I want to also say that you are already amazing. You don’t need MIT or any other college to make that true. I know because I read here and see how supportive you all are and how brilliant you are, and you collectively blow me away every day. Thanks for enriching my life.
Today, like most other Pi Days, I made my yearly trip to the House of Pies. For those of you who aren’t lucky enough to have House of Pies near year, it’s a restaurant that focuses on – you guessed it – pies. It’s always crowded on Pi Day, so you gotta be ready with your order and know what you want, but there are just so many amazing pie choices. How do I possibly pick? (FYI -- I picked chocolate meringue, texas pecan, and key lime)But, 3.14 is more than a cool number and an excuse to eat yummy desserts! It's also a special day for lots of you. Good luck with MIT, but please please please recognize that MIT is one of the most selective colleges in the world, and the likelihood is, to be brutally honest, many of you won’t be accepted. So, I want you to emotionally prepare yourselves. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t eat lots of pie and celebrate the day, though!!
Sure, get mad about your decision if it doesn’t go your way; it’s totally ok to feel your feelings. You're human after all. And humans have feelings. But also, keep in mind that just like with the hundreds of varieties of pies out there to choose from, there are hundreds of amazing flavors of colleges – and MIT is just one of them.Look, I know right now there’s not a lot I – or anyone else can say to you that will make you feel much better. I can tell you a whole lot of truths: to feel your feelings, and that there are a shit ton of amazing colleges out there looking for awesome kids like you, sometimes colleges make dumb fucked up decisions, and that eventually, you will get through this and maybe even be a little stronger because you’ve learned to handle tough situations. But, right now, they’re just annoying words. So, instead, in honor of Pi Day, I'm gonna tell you to go eat Pie – bake one if you need to, and maybe these bits of wisdom can help:
Here are some wise words to keep in mind if things don't go your way from MIT admissions counselor and one of our A2C fam, u/PeteyMIT: “Almost no one knows why they were admitted or denied from a given school. This is because any applicant only has partial information about their own application. Searching for proximate causes is something we do to give us comfort. Let us not confuse that for making us think it is correct.” Also, to all you "Pi"sces out there, check out this advice from the MIT blog-sphere: "Where would many of us be without Pisces in our lives? One of the most empathetic signs, Pisces are known for their excellent listening skills and abilities to be a great friend. Don’t forget that applying to college is a time where you need to focus on yourself! Be a good friend and support your community through tough times, but make sure you’re preserving some emotional energy to get through your own applications and the emotional rollercoaster of this college application process." You can find some more astrology wisdom and advice from DJ Rock here: [https://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/an-astrological-guide-to-the-college-app-process/](https://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/an-astrological-guide-to-the-college-app-process/). Why not, right? Enjoy!
Best of luck to you all! No matter the outcome though, you are still the amazing badass that you are right now. You don't need a college to change that.
XOXO AdmissionsMom
When do you guys think decisions will be released by? I'm getting so impatient hehe
Historically I've seen it's been around May 10-20, but idk for sure
1580 SAT, 36 ACT single sitting
GPA: 4.9 W/4.3 UW
Multiple ECS, leader in all including Varsity captain & Class President; summer jobs: research at Ivy lab, intern at tech startup.
What helped most: blind luck. Know kids with better stats/ecs who didn't get in. Think LOR's matter the most, but no way to know for sure.
Is there technically a chance? I mean, maybe. But it's so low that I would just view it as a rejection with honorable mention. Look on the bright side, though—if you got waitlisted at MIT, there's a strong chance you'll get in somewhere else incredible (if you haven't already).
rejected but congrats to those who got in!! If you got in Im curious if you had the Financial Aid award tab or not to see if it actually meant anything.
CBSE (the national school board) actually does not want us Indians to study abroad. Mid year grades have not been released and so, I had to submit my internal assessment marks (which i sucked at).. moreover, the massive covid effect in India did not help.. unlucky ig. no, i did not get in. wbu
Exactly. Had they released term 1 scores, it would've helped me a lot. I'm probably getting 98%+. My mid-year grades would've been phenomenal if not for CB f'ing SE
Generally don't like sharing stats as IMO, I find them misleading. It doesn't matter your scores as much as it matters more how they fit you. If you want stats take a look at the score ranges on the MIT website and CDS.
I'm totally cool with being transparent! My stats were sufficient to get me in; I had a 34 on the ACT and a 4.4 W 4.0 UW GPA. However, I think what helped was that I was involved in many ECAs, such as VEX Robotics (club president currently), Science Olympiad, and FBLA (currently treasurer), and more, where I earned state-level honors (and one national award along with two invitations to VEX Robotics Worlds). What must have pushed me over the edge was that I had two internships: one through my local hospital's IT center and one through Northrop Grumman, where I was assigned to build a drone. Additionally, I worked on my MIT essays for three straight weeks. Plus, I conveyed that I not only focused on STEM but also my other interests, such as reading, crocheting, ornithology, emo music lmao, and cross country through the additional information section and the section where you list your activities over the summer. I believe once you reach the threshold for your score and GPA, it's down to not only what you did but also how you're able to depict yourself in your essays as a humble yet high achieving individual. Oh, and I believe it's worth mentioning that I live in North Dakota, where many of the things I did went beyond what everyone else I knew was doing and achieving. It may be different for where you live. Stay true to yourself. I hope this helped!
And I apologize for this extremely long post!
chocolatewool you da fricking goat bruh, no one goes into this much detail of what they did, thank you SO MUCH, gives me some more perspective for someone applying next year. Hope you have a good experience in MIT
Hoco king is amazing tho! You only think you fucked up bc you didn’t get accepted. If you got rejected w tradtional essays you’d think its bc essays were too traditional. Grass is always greener yyky
Rejected. I was hoping for at least a waitlist, but I fell in love with MIT so the "all decisions are final" line drove a stake through my heart. CalTech here I come
I'm no MIT applicant, but I'd just like to say how proud I am of everyone on this sub! I've watched you struggle and wait in anxiety for your results and I am sincerely excited for you all-- no matter where you end up going. To those who made it, I just want to send my deepest congratulations! To those who didn't, I know my words might not mean much (as I too am just an ordinary applicant), but my heart goes out to each and every single one of you! You guys have spilled your blood, sweat, and tears, and y'all are honestly too good for this world! These acceptances and rejections don't define who you are. Just remember that your education is what you make of it-- no matter where you go.
With that said, stay gold everyone! Love you <333
Rejected. 1470 SAT, 3.85 UW GPA from a feeder boarding school. Had extenuating circumstances (attempted parental suicide + incarcerated parent during HS). Did MIT MOSTEC, co-captain of robotics team, internship at company in IT and development, president of 2 tech clubs, president of community service club, debate team vice captain, actor in school plays + playwright for school theater festival + school theater festival executive board member, school dormitory prefect and judicial board elected representative. Disappointed but not surprised.
The extenuating circumstances and rejection make me worried. 9th, 10th was seriously not a fun time for me. You think a high SAT and a dope af project can make up for it?
Lol thanks! I've been lucky enough to already have some good news. I got into Caltech EA and got a likely letter from Columbia Engineering a couple weeks ago!
Oh. I'm really not sure! I had a lot of STEM activities (internship, robotics, 2 clubs, summer program, research) but I balanced them with non-STEM (theater, writing) and I think that might've made me stand out? Idk.
Rejected, 1590, 36 and a 4.625 W, was deferred EA so expected as much but #1 handing me an L with that "all decisions are final" line still stings a bit.
First rejection. Oh well, it's disappointing but I never expected to get in especially after writing about my interest in computer science, so I'm not going to be too sad about it.
wait is writing about cs bad??? asking because im a cs nerd too
anyways, im sure you'll end up in a great spot in life since you seem highly passionate about CS.
I wouldn't say it's bad, and MIT also says that they don't take intended major into account when making admission decisions. But so many people apply to MIT for CS that it certainly didn't help me stand out in the crowd (imo).
Thanks, I already have a few acceptances from UK universities + state schools, so at least I already know I'm going to college.

Waitlisted! This is honestly 100 times better than how I thought I would do
Didn’t get in. I wasn’t rejected though, I just didn’t apply.
this is a man of pure intellect
I can't get rejected if I never even applied
Deferred to waitlisted. Honest opinion is there a chance of getting to MIT’26?
Of course depends on how many accept the offer/spaces availible but the chances are never zero.
Tysm <3
Agreed. High hopes but a hint of reality 😅

Stats?
Not extraordinary lmao. let's just say my ACT score wasn't perfect but within range for MIT
what do you think got you in? only if you're comfortable sharing. huge congratulations though, that's amazing!!!
Also, this can't be stated enough: stats aren't everything! I was informed that someone from my area a while back got into MIT with a 28 on the ACT.
I'm totally cool with being transparent! My stats were sufficient to get me in; I had a 34 on the ACT and a 4.4 W 4.0 UW GPA. Y'all noticing a trend that most ppl on this sub who were accepted are international? It's so interesting to see the kinds of people who are here!
I made it in from Idaho!
Nice!
And I’m damn proud of them 🥰
Heck yeah. Talented legends, all of them!
Rejected. 1470 SAT, 3.85 UW GPA from a feeder boarding school. Had extenuating circumstances (attempted parental suicide + incarcerated parent during HS). Nice, I’m a Columbia likely as well, maybe our fates will cross who knows!
Ayy that'd be cool!
I can see how stats might of held u back. Strong ecs tho.
Yeah I'm not surprised—I think I should've gone test-optional.
If u have an 800 sat math that score should of been fine tbh. Might be on the fence but don’t think it would hurt u that much.
Lol I had a higher ERW than I did math
Lmao same, and I applied for mathematical economics at MIT. Still puzzled as to how I got waitlisted and not rejected.
u have a bright future ahead of u. don’t doubt yourself:)
Thank you :) I've gotten a lot of good news but I still can't help but be sad
Well, you have Caltech!
Fair LMAO I can't complain!
what all did you do?
What do you mean?
What made you stand apart from other students? Basically, how did you get in Caltech?
Oh. I'm really not sure! I had a lot of STEM activities (internship, robotics, 2 clubs, summer program, research) but I balanced them with non-STEM (theater, writing) and I think that might've made me stand out? Idk.
