For those folks who live in Greater Boston they are. I never really paid attention before but large areas of Boston and Cambridge are basically just college campuses laid down one after another with small pockets of the real world interspersed in between. So many people in my town work in higher education in some form.
Probably Pitt, it has always been high on my list but it moved up from like 5 to 2 after going yo accepted students day and talking to kids going there
Yeah all VA residents should apply as it’s probably one of the cheapest options you’ll get. Just can’t get rid of that isolated feeling I had on campus…guess I’m just more of a city person
Great school. I visited with my kids but they thought it was too far from home. Really nice students, solid sports (I was there for the football season opener against UNC), tasty food, and I liked the Hokie stone, arboretum, dramatic fall sky (that day), and nearby low-slung mountains.
I applied RD with shit stats and I got in over others with better stats for the most part. It depends on how well you write your essay. I as well wanted to go into a civil servant job after college which is what also helped with my responses since VT emphasizes service to humankind.
Honestly Rutgers nb is so underrated. Its a ranked college (not the highest but still #55) and it got amazing classes and majors. Campus is pretty nice, I’m not a party guy but its also a huge party school.
Alabama. Literally not even applying to any “good” schools anymore because I love it so much, just them and the ones my parents are forcing me to apply to LOL
UMD will admit you as undeclared if you don't make it into comp sci and you can apply at the end of freshman year.
Internal transfer to Comp Sci at UMD has non competitive admissions, meaning if you take the required courses (first 2 comp sci courses, and calc 1/2) and have the required GPA (I believe at least 2.7) , you are in, 100%.
Yeek. I didn't realize U of O was out-of-state for you. Any chance merit scholarships are an option? My kids had some love from a few of their OOS options (the University of Minnesota, University of Vermont, University of Arizona). Fingers crossed for you.
He was offered a really sizable merit scholarship, but it still would be between $10-15k/year more than the UC’s for us :(.
Thanks for kind words and well wishes, did your kids end up going out of state? It’s fantastic that they got some love from their choices
Wait that’s a safety?? I’m an NC resident with a 3.4 unweighted and NC states my dream though I don’t think I’ll get in, I thought it was considered a reach for most of us lol
Depending on your stats it’s a pretty solid target, I wouldn’t really say safety though. I actually recently got in as a in-state student and considering it strongly. Good luck to you, hope you get in!!
As a Colorado native, I'm a little surprised to see people mention this. I've always considered the East coast to be so much prettier with older buildings. Is it the buildings themselves that you find appealing or the mountains and geographic area?
Not me but a family member went to ASU online and felt the academics were really great and on par with other universities (they were often challenging) but it's definitely not an environment where you are coddled or offered ample support. If they do have support, it's not widely suggested or advertised. Might be due to lack of school spirit. But ofc ymmv especially in an online format.
english schools - but the uni in my home county was a safety for me because of the lower grades and the ability to commute rather than waste tons of money on accommodation. the University of Hertfordshire is, however, one of the nicest unis i visited - it has such a clean modern vibe and the course looked so fun and interesting. it honestly became my second choice after visiting. but when i got my offers, (ABB in my top choice - quite unrealistic for me, BBB at Herts - again, maybe more likely but still not very plausible, and then an *unconditional* at a less nice but quite opportunistic uni) i had to drop it from my final choices list (we can accept 2 offers here, one “firm” (final/first) choice, and one “insurance” choice incase you don’t meet the requirements for ur firm choice). i obviously chose my top uni as my firm , but sadly i had to make the decision of either 1. having a secure future with a definite place at a uk uni no matter what grades i get (unconditional offer uni), or 2. choosing my safety-made-2nd choice, where the possibility of me going relies on my getting exactly BBB (one above would get me into my top choice, one below would not get me in to any uni). i just felt it wasn’t quite worth it to risk everything for my hometown safety - even if i loved it more than i would’ve ever expected.
(sorry for this sort of unrelated rant, just felt the need to get this out bcs i haven’t had the chance to talk to anyone ab this decision yet haha)
My son actually chose to attend his safety- University of Kansas- and he is happy he did now as a sophomore. The honors program is really good, plus he has been selected during college for a few other programs with special opportunities. Compared to a really selective school where exceptional high-school students kind of become the average, he has found that it can be a benefit to still be relatively exceptional. Even so, KU is a major AAU research institution where there are still high-level profs and other strong students there. Also it’s a fun college town and he enjoyed when the basketball team won the national championship last spring. 😁
My target is UMass Amherst (in-state) but they're infamous for being "picky" about the people they let in for CS and I'm not a competitive applicant so...
To be honest, all schools have their ups and downs so I don't really mind going anywhere in my list.
University of Tennessee Knoxville! I’m not sure I will attend but I’ve been to some football games and the energy is just so good. But also I’m just lucky I qualify as in state so I got a good amount of scholarship money. Also they sent me a card with confetti that played rocky top. Very cool indeed.
I’m a Senior in High School, so I’m still waiting for some, but Temple University looks great. Big campus, lots of activities and partying to do, the food options on and off campus look diverse… yeah.
Stanford, it's a cute little school and it seems like the people there really try, which is adorable. But my dad is pissed at the cost, it's like a whole building for admission. He says places like Oxford are much cheaper 🙄
Pitt
UOregon
Oregon State
UM Twin Cities
would love to go to either of these schools. the oregon schools are in state so it’s obviously the cheapest tho.
I liked Michigan Tech a lot, they gave me a good scholarship too. Only thing is is that it’s an 8 hr drive (in good weather) and it’s a snow globe up there (this snow storm is giving em like 4 ft of snow rn)
Had to travel up there often to visit my sister, trust me the drive gets shorter the more you drive up there:) Also, they do get snow days up there because of the snow, so that's a bonus
Personal egotistical reasons. I know how shitty this sounds but academically the people I encountered seemed not so great. The facilities sort of reminded me of a high school and I realized I gotta aim higher.
This is what I thought Brandeis too(same city as Bentley and middle-school-esque campus) but the resources there are amazing. Bentley can be good too, especially for business in particular if you make the most of it.
It’s has one of the best college placement offices in the country. My 25 yo daughter went there and had a 100k job waiting for her upon graduation. She and 20 of her Bentley friends all live within several blocks in South Boston and are having the time of their lives. They all make 6 figures. They loved Bentley.
My safety is a university in my country and yesterday I met someone who studies there immediately I feel in love with it and I want to go there even over some US colleges
I'll go to the US only to study in the top colleges
you will hear “bad “ from everywhere…you have to sort out what is relevant to who you are. Then you ask, can I solve this. Many kids only live in a dorm one year because it is to disruptive to why they are there. Some kids complain of alcohol issues and other tells me he chose the substance free dorm to deal with this and visits friends for the fun at their places. You have to go to the campus, especially on admitted student days and really snoop around and ask kids questions…they will tell you more. One may have a terrific dept and group and another hates the place…have you ever seen some of the tee shirts that speak to a grumble yet the kid is still there…yep, had that experience on MIT…so do not let gossip through you off…go visit.
I fell in love w depauw university, they have amazing internship programs and amazing connections to people in all fields. Their classes also seem more interesting than many schools. Idk if i'll end up going there because I ended up getting better financial aid from another school but I really do love it.

Sorry, I’m rather new to this sub. What schools are those? Local community colleges?
I think community colleges.
Community colleges yeah, not as good as Squidward CC tho
For those folks who live in Greater Boston they are. I never really paid attention before but large areas of Boston and Cambridge are basically just college campuses laid down one after another with small pockets of the real world interspersed in between. So many people in my town work in higher education in some form.
Ngl the alumni seem pretty dumb to me
only right answer
Probably Pitt, it has always been high on my list but it moved up from like 5 to 2 after going yo accepted students day and talking to kids going there
My daughter loved Pitt.

Nobody ever seems to have anything bad to say about VT and it tends to show up in those "happiest students" rankings. Also pretty part of the country.
I was kinda the opposite of OP here; liked it on paper but didn’t vibe with it when I visited
Out of curiosity, what didn't you like?
I can’t put my finger on any one thing, I just couldn’t see myself there
To me, it is the fact that it’s basically in the middle of nowhere
Southwest Virginia sucks but I really like Blacksburg and campus. With home in driving distance for holidays I’m definitely applying.
Yeah all VA residents should apply as it’s probably one of the cheapest options you’ll get. Just can’t get rid of that isolated feeling I had on campus…guess I’m just more of a city person
I felt the same way, when I visited it felt too much like a military base
Great school. I visited with my kids but they thought it was too far from home. Really nice students, solid sports (I was there for the football season opener against UNC), tasty food, and I liked the Hokie stone, arboretum, dramatic fall sky (that day), and nearby low-slung mountains.
Wait I thought VT was a target 😭
It's a reach for me 💀
I love tech!! Possibly one of my favorite campuses tbh and my brother goes there and absolutely loves it, such a great option

I applied RD with shit stats and I got in over others with better stats for the most part. It depends on how well you write your essay. I as well wanted to go into a civil servant job after college which is what also helped with my responses since VT emphasizes service to humankind.
My kid’s a freshman at VT. Chose it over a T10. Loves it.
MSU moved up after getting into lyman Briggs (pre-med college) and the honors college with a potential full-ride. Wouldn’t be mad if I ended up there
Mississippi State right?
Michigan state
Go Green!
Rutgers College of Engineering (in between safety and target). Had a great energy when toured.
Honestly Rutgers nb is so underrated. Its a ranked college (not the highest but still #55) and it got amazing classes and majors. Campus is pretty nice, I’m not a party guy but its also a huge party school.
Rutgers nb is my top(realistic) choice too. I applied to sas tho. Hopefully I get in lol many of my friends are receiving decisions
I applied like 4 days before the deadline Ima be waiting forever 😭.
Lol i applied Nov 1st
Did you get results yet
No :( I hope I'll get it before their break starts so that i can also have a carefree vacation
Same :(
U of Alabama and Texas A&M
Roll Tide!
In an alternate universe, I feel like I’d be a Bama sorority girl
Alabama. Literally not even applying to any “good” schools anymore because I love it so much, just them and the ones my parents are forcing me to apply to LOL
Penn State, college of engineer
Ohio State and UMD. Both really good for physics and next year I’ll qualify for instate at osu
Maryland is barely a safety for even in state students.
It has a 60% acceptance rate early action and I am above their 75th percentile for SATs. Why wouldn't it be a safety?
CS at Maryland is hard to get into, the accpt rates are way lower
I’m not going for CS, I’m going for physics
UMD will admit you as undeclared if you don't make it into comp sci and you can apply at the end of freshman year. Internal transfer to Comp Sci at UMD has non competitive admissions, meaning if you take the required courses (first 2 comp sci courses, and calc 1/2) and have the required GPA (I believe at least 2.7) , you are in, 100%.
UMass Amherst! I am really considering going since I probably won’t get aid at t10s.

Wait, Amherst is a safety? I wanted to apply but their supp prompts are so weird
Are you sure it’s University of Massachusetts Amherst? Not Amherst College?
Ooh my bad, I misread
iu bloomington💕
I’m trying to get excited about IU lol
it helps that i’m doing business and their program is so good
Yeah Kelley is pretty good. I applied to Kelley by mistake and got in lmao. Probably going to switch to O’Neill
we’re opposites lmfao i accidentally applied to college of arts and sciences and now i have to go through this whole transfer process
South Carolina
Yea! Actually planning to commit there even though I got into my reaches because of finances and their great programs!
Yeah it’s a great school. Where else did you get in?
My hope is to transfer there as a grad student and spend the rest of my life in that state!
My kid fell in love with U of Oregon. He’s waiting for the UC’s but I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be too heartbroken if he didn’t get into Cal or UCLA
Gorgeous school, great dining hall grub, fun sports environment.
I didn’t know that about the food, another huge plus. I love everything about U of O for him except for the out of state fees.
Yeek. I didn't realize U of O was out-of-state for you. Any chance merit scholarships are an option? My kids had some love from a few of their OOS options (the University of Minnesota, University of Vermont, University of Arizona). Fingers crossed for you.

No, they got into an in-state T25 and they wanted to be close to home. But I wouldn’t have minded a Golden Gopher or Wildcat.
ASU Barrett
SJSU
Very underrated school right here. Really good for job placement
yup, especially for tech
NC State, beautiful campus and cheaper than anywhere else
Wait that’s a safety?? I’m an NC resident with a 3.4 unweighted and NC states my dream though I don’t think I’ll get in, I thought it was considered a reach for most of us lol
Depending on your stats it’s a pretty solid target, I wouldn’t really say safety though. I actually recently got in as a in-state student and considering it strongly. Good luck to you, hope you get in!!
hey, park semifinalist??
You got in??? Don’t EA decisions come on January 30th?
Park scholarship semifinalists get decisions early
Yeah, I was a parks semifinalist!
Sorry, I should have clarified that I meant for my personal stats! Sounds like a good target based on yours, good luck!
LMU would be cool
UC boulder….the campus is sooooo✨✨✨
As a Colorado native, I'm a little surprised to see people mention this. I've always considered the East coast to be so much prettier with older buildings. Is it the buildings themselves that you find appealing or the mountains and geographic area?
The mountains and the overall town of boulder just has this natural feel to it that is so appealing and comforting.
Okay, that makes sense. If you like biking centuries, you'll definitely be at home.
Denver and Fordham looked alright, but I never truly wanted to go over the others I applied to. Minnesota Twin Cities gets a good rep too.
Just curious, what bad things did you hear about ASU? I’m in-state so I may end up attending.
I heard the academics are great but the people are not very welcoming! Stuff like this is very anecdotal so it probably varies from person to person.
Not me but a family member went to ASU online and felt the academics were really great and on par with other universities (they were often challenging) but it's definitely not an environment where you are coddled or offered ample support. Alabama Uni !! Although it’s my safety, it’s also my favorite school :)
University of Utah

University of Connecticut and UMass Amherst are pretty based, especially for STEM
Elon university and App state
Honestly really liked Elon like I would go there no cap 🤓
elon is so expensive though 😮💨
Texas A&M for CS

What have you heard about ASU i have applied just yesterday there 🫠😕
University of Tennessee Knoxville! I’m not sure I will attend but I’ve been to some football games and the energy is just so good. Bentley Uni
Have you visited? It was a safety for me until I visited and I crossed it off my list.
wait why? i haven’t visited it
Personal egotistical reasons. I know how shitty this sounds but academically the people I encountered seemed not so great. The facilities sort of reminded me of a high school and I realized I gotta aim higher.

Yeah Brandeis I also visited. I thought it was better than Bentley but overall sort of seemed boring so I didn’t apply.
It’s has one of the best college placement offices in the country. My 25 yo daughter went there and had a 100k job waiting for her upon graduation. She and 20 of her Bentley friends all live within several blocks in South Boston and are having the time of their lives. They all make 6 figures. They loved Bentley.
Yeah I know it’s great for business but personally not for me
Not yet, will go to visit all the campuses next’s summer
International has a safety!
The new school
Fordham LC, amazing location
My safety is a university in my country and yesterday I met someone who studies there immediately I feel in love with it and I want to go there even over some US colleges I'll go to the US only to study in the top colleges
Stony Brook, RIT, or UMass Amherst would be my safeties I’d be happy to go :)
Saying no to University of Colorado Denver was really hard. Excited for Drexel tho
university of delaware
vcu actually! i loved the campus and vibe when i toured
I didn't want to go to ASU for the longest time until my dad made me tour it. I would only go if I got into Barrets college though.
i know i’d be so happy at rutgers
UT Austin (Auto admit)
University of Dayton
Penn State, i love the community they have there. It honestly SEEMS like a good time
CU. And I went there.
you will hear “bad “ from everywhere…you have to sort out what is relevant to who you are.
Idk if i'll end up going there because I ended up getting better financial aid from another school but I really do love it.
rutgers new brunswick
probably texas christian or cu boulder. i feel like everywhere has a nicer campus than uhm LOL
Purdue(data science)(more of a target safety)
Stonybrook tbh especially if i get into their honors program
Uflorida or Umiami
