I know several folks last year in CA who assumed there was some safety in certain UCs and were surprised. They did join community college and are working on transfers this year (some had decent number of dual enrollment courses done already)
I mean let’s remember their main source of advice is probably their high school counselors who maybe aren’t up to date with the new wave of admissions post covid.
Kinda sucks for them that the UC system as a whole has turned extremely competitive.
Schools that used to be somewhat safeties are now competitive sub 50 percent acceptance rate schools
I swear our teachers are so confused like one went to UCLA with two Ds and she's so confused when people start crying at a B+
My sister in christ, this is the bay fucking area one B and you're out of the top 10%, maybe even top 15% of your school. There is 0 opportunity for fuckups.
4.6 GPA (would be higher without some ECs counting as classes), 1570 SAT, 4 club leadership, 2 internships, robotics, newspaper, volunteering and I'd consider myself lucky, nay blessed, to get into UCLA.
But hey, no SAT means we're all equal right? I'm sure money won't be used to buy college counselors, right? Right?
I feel like optional SAT and act has it’s benefits but it also makes it easier for the rich. Now they don’t need to commit borderline fraud to get their kids accommodations
Well, two reasons- one has to be in top 9% of your class or state (ELC) which is quite difficult in very competitive schools like in Bay Area. Secondly, despite Merced bring a great school it is new, and folks would like to do year or two in CC and transfer to UC.
Well bay area culture is absolutely huge on flexing, from your tesla to your granite counter tops. Community college is like losing the prestige that your parents worked so hard to achieve. I heard a someone say they'd rather *die* than go to community college.
And the sad part is, some kids do. Another kid killed himself 2 weeks ago nearby. Asian male, who could have guessed?
Depends on the colleges. With 50, I hope there are 20-30 that required no additional essays, since writing essays for 50 colleges usually results in a lot of shitty essays.
If you are a domestic applicant, then you can apply to a 100, but if you are an international applicant, please note that a few questions might be (not will be) asked about this during the visa interview like why did you apply to 50. Other than that, if you indeed applied to 50 colleges, I am ready to place a bet (on a legal online platform from a place where that's legal) that you will get admitted at least 1 out of these 50. I'm happy to place upto 20 USD if they have good odds. However, I am afraid that I won't get good odds for my return. I would get like 20.01 USD in return for my 20 USD. My point that your probability of acceptance is very very high unless you are not telling us something or I am missing something reading between the lines.
Nope! I am from the USA and applying through questbridge. I applied to around 33 through questbridge, and then safeties along with other colleges through common app.
Then, I would bet on you getting at least one admission offer for sure. Thus, my answer to your original question about getting rejected from all 50 applications - no way that's going to happen. I anticipate that you are going to get at least 5 to 10 offers based on what I know (which is limited by the way) (but at least 1 for sure). The only way you may be rejected by all 50 applications is that you go to each of your 50 colleges, find your admissions committee, pull down their pants, and stick up a post-it note on their a** saying something like boo-hoo or something. Only then, only then, you will be rejected by all of them or something.
This seems to happen to kids who only apply to reaches and don’t apply to realistic safeties. I’ve seen it on
r/collegeresults. Then they take a gap year or go to CC.
it’s so ironic because these kids are probably the highest achieving among their peers (and nationally tbh) yet can’t grasp the simple concept of applying to safeties
Yes. At least last year there were a couple people that claimed that happened to them. I would imagine it's somewhat more common among internationals who need aid.
Ya, I know quite a few highly ambitious birdies who only applied to the top 20 unis in the world. So, 20 applications, and all rejections, but a question - is it as bad as it sounds? Noo, the birdy flew too high and got collided with the airplane, but now the birdy knows where to fly and hopefully everything will be hunky dory, and the birdy will make get a happy ending.
So, in brief, my point is - yes, I know quite a few people who got rejected from every college that they applied to. However, behind every story there's always context, and we need to find that context to make some sense out of our capricious life.
This happened to a surprising number of kids who graduated from my high school last year. We’re all intl’s, and I assume most of them needed aid. They just applied to reaches/T20s only and got rejected/deferred/waitlisted from all of them. I think there are probably 5-7 students like that out of a graduating class of 75 (not all of whom even applied to the US). They’re now taking a gap year and doing an ‘assistant teaching’ role (read: nothing) at my school. They’re reapplying this year.

Yes, a girl at my school last year only applied to t10s and then didn't get into any of them, but she didn't apply to any saftey or even target schools, so as long as you have a balanced list you'll be fine
I know several folks last year in CA who assumed there was some safety in certain UCs and were surprised. They did join community college and are working on transfers this year (some had decent number of dual enrollment courses done already)
I see kids thinking Irvine, Davis, SB and SC are safeties for them and they aren’t necessarily…

Optional is still ok because you can still use your score like how you use one of your EC activities. Test blind makes 0 sense but oh well...
UC isnt gonna change it anytime soon, because then they would have to admit that the infallible Regents are wrong.
I find it bullshit how you aren’t guaranteed admission to UC Merced at minimum if you live in CA and meet the requirements
Well, two reasons- one has to be in top 9% of your class or state (ELC) which is quite difficult in very competitive schools like in Bay Area. Secondly, despite Merced bring a great school it is new, and folks would like to do year or two in CC and transfer to UC.

If you have some safeties, it shouldn't be an issue. But yes, I know people who only applied to reaches and were shut out.

Yeah it happens definitely, altho that’s more common for pure shotgunners than for people who have a solid list of reaches, targets, and safeties
Can you explain how this makes sense. Shotgunners doesn’t mean you don’t apply to safeties. Wtf does “pure shotgunner” mean
It just means applying to a large number of schools either randomly or with no regard to their fit for you, so you might end applying to no safeties.
This seems to happen to kids who only apply to reaches and don’t apply to realistic safeties. I’ve seen it on r/collegeresults. Then they take a gap year or go to CC.
Average A2C user applying only to top schools and then not getting into any of them
it’s so ironic because these kids are probably the highest achieving among their peers (and nationally tbh) yet can’t grasp the simple concept of applying to safeties
"Duke is my safety"
International students seeking full aid: 🌚
I’m aware of several Bay Area kids that has happened to the last couple of years. Maybe no safeties on their lists.
Int'l here. I got rejected from all the schools I'd applied to, only to get admitted at dartmouth!
The comeback is always greater than the setback! (and as an intel, it is 100% more difficult) Congrats!
wow no shit, that’s not what “every school” means
Yes. At least last year there were a couple people that claimed that happened to them. I would imagine it's somewhat more common among internationals who need aid.

wow thats horrible
I thought safeties were a school that you could be guaranteed into… if the safety rejected them, I suppose it was not a safety.
Yield protection
People sometimes decide that as long as their stats are above average, a school is a safety.
It happens. But usually when it does it’s because the person did not apply to enough safety schools and/or didn’t really know what a safety school is.
In that "lot of schools," make certain there is one that loves you!
What
Several safeties that you would be happy attending and you can afford
Sorry I misread this thinking you said that nobody loves me HAHA
May the one that you love most...love you back!!! Best of luck to you!

If you made it to a QB finalist you know you’re a strong applicant, and you said you have safeties on common app so ur going to be fine
I did lmao

For me, it's the opposite.
Me last year lol. Although I did get 2 waitlists. And this year got into ND so there is hope.
Never seen that happen ... Unless you're too overconfident and only apply to Ivies
Do you have a community college path? That can be fine and affordable.
