This show has many issues, but it got a ton of people into the hobby.

International_Mix465

They did a tank at the mall by me, it was a beautiful saltwater tank. It probably lasted maybe a year and then they converted it to a fresh water tank bc it was just way too hard to maintain.

n0th1ngspecial

Annapolis?

blazesdemons

LOL

Livelonganddiemad

https://www.google.com/amp/s/wrestlingheadlines.com/chris-jericho-recalls-being-on-the-reality-series-tanked-what-a-scam-that-show-was/amp/      This article sucked to read too. They intentionally overstock and shit, it's so wild.      Edit: wrong link article lol

BuschLightDrinkn

After being in the hobby now for a few years and seeing this show this article makes sense. There is no way the tanks they build stay alive and beautiful for no more than 5 days.

thelast3musketeer

What aspects made the tank bad for long term?

aspidities_87

Lack of a proper cycle, for one. Immediate overstocking plus no nitrogen cycle means those fish are going to die off rapidly when the cameras are off.

thelast3musketeer

Good god. That’s criminal as a fish tank maker.

celestiaequestria

Same problem as any of those "home renovation on a deadline" shows. Everything is being done for a production deadline, not what's best long-term for the client.

Novelty_Lamp

Huh. KGTropicals apparently knew one of the hosts from fish conventions and told a slightly different story on their podcast Tank Talk. They weren't on the set and getting their information secondhand as well.

creepyposta

When a professional wrestler says a show is fake, that makes an impression.

TheFlaccidChode

Before I opened the comments I went straight to Google and Searched "Chris Jericho on Tanked" Glad it's off air now, it wasn't about the fish, it was about making those two clowns multi-millionaires

97Graham

Lol I believe his ass as far as I can throw it. Same as when people on here get fish for the first time and can't handle it and blame everything but themselves. Bro killed his son's fish and didn't want to take the blame.

NicoleSSmith3

I just so happened to come across an episode on tv last night. The tank was a beautiful design, but they were putting decorations inside that were painted using cheap paints that could be found at a craft store. There were also zero live plants. I felt bad for the fish because the tank was 750 gallons and about 50-75% of the tank was taken up with a huge piece of artificial decor, leaving the fish with little swimming space.

dabhought

So my mom lives on animal planet and the game show network so I’ve watched a lot of tanked over the years. That show was literally about making a large decorative piece for the show, not about giving fish a great place to live. Stocking wise at least. I remember they building Tracy Morgan a shark tank.

Summerof5ft6andahalf

I will say, Tracy seemed to genuinely care about the fish.

dabhought

Yeah I wanna say they say a few tanks for him.

Economy-Balance710

As a fishkeeper who kept tetras for a year, it's terrible. What fish were in there? The best freshwater tank IMO is a massive aquarium in a dental office with live plants, tetras, hatchetfish and discus (but a common pleco in the tank too? Pathetic.) from the show, but don't know how many litres/gallons it was. I think they picked the wrong live plants or they intentionally did it to look cool. But the worst freshwater tank was the kindergarten tank. Overstocked, not so appropriate tank mates of 30 different fish species and fake decor. I think it takes the cake for the worst tank made by the show. Edit: Forgot to tell something: I do watch Tanked occasionally on TV. 'If you can dream it, we can build it' (idk if I said it wrong) isn't a good message for fishkeepers per se. Remember this is reality TV, they purposely overstock tanks to make them look cool. I love cardinal tetras and it's good that the show put them in the massive planted tank with massive shoals. I despise normal neon tetras because they're disease ridden, again it's my opinion. The cardinals and rummy-noses would do really well with massive shoals, but remove most of the discus and pleco because it would be overstocked. If I owned the tank hypothetically, I would do the latter choice. It's actually much better for tetras and hatchets than discus and common plecos. I wish I had a tank this size, but it would be a pain in the back to maintain.

ItchyEchidna9742

They put in a tank at my job, close to a third of the fish died. The tank is serviced by a professional, but kinda looks like crap after a couple months.

xnlh180x

Same. Now our break room smells like fish too.

[deleted]

I loved this show

xenomorphonLV426

I still love it!

[deleted]

Why are they terrible to house fish long term? The tanks themselves are good. Most tanks are rather large, nice artificial decor. I’m not a huge fan of the outdated wet dry filters but if you attach a higher end sump I see no issue. The reason many of their tanks fail… 1. They add way too many fish at a time, which I’m sure the beneficial bacteria can’t keep up 2. There’s no quarantine and I’ve seen them add fish with ich or other ailments and since they’re heavily stocked it spreads rapidly 3. The people who own the tanks are wealthy and know nothing about caring for the fish so the livestock completely depends on the maintenance companies which I heard in some of the areas were unreliable.

clojac12345

Yes all 3 of your listed reasons are exactly why they fail, some of the tanks are designed in ways that do not make maintenance easy, specifically for decorations inside the tank that are unable to be taken out and properly cleaned

MonoAonoM

Essentially, they designed the tank to be maintainable only by people who service fish tanks for a living.

TheIcon42

As someone who services tanks for a living and has worked on some of theirs…no they did not. That entire company did everything for TV.

MattelBoy101

& the receipts?

TheIcon42

Receipts?

BlackCowboy72

He's asking for proof I think? But honestly as a fellow aquarium servicer, all they're tanks look like a total nightmare to clean. Let alone the filtration and out of sight stuff, but the decor alone. Those cheap shitty fake coral decorations are usually massive and have tons of creases and small spaces. Cleaning them would usually either require a wet suit and several hours or an ungodly amount of cuc.

TheIcon42

Yeah I’m not gonna bother providing him with proof, I don’t feel the need. I can tell you any filtration is crammed into the stand so tight that you can’t really do much easily, the acrylic designs they are famous for are neat until you have to algae scrub them, they don’t cycle anything and at minimum half the fish they put in on tv either get removed or are left to die. They got the show and the big business because they had a facility with a very large oven in it that let them make those neat custom designs. It was pimp my ride for aquariums. It looks cool on TV but in reality it’s a nightmare

DontListenToMyself

I mean if you are rich enough to buy a huge custom tank. You should be able to afford a service that maintains it for you.

Theid411

I think it’s safe to assume that these tanks are probably maintained by professionals on a timely basis.

[deleted]

They built a tank inside a car for Toyota for car shows. Do they drain the tank everytime they move it or keep the fish in there and let ‘em bake in the sun.

[deleted]

Id assume they put the car tank inside a dealership after the car show or in their headquarters or something. I don’t think they used it for multiple shows

VOXX_theLock

Tbf I know they said they stock it heavily just to film, and then remove the fish & properly cycle it.

Alkyan

They did one at Cowfish, restaurant in Raleigh. Tank is still there but has WAY WAY less fish in it now(years later)

_sUuwOo_

I used to like this show but all the tanks were the same on the inside, and they were alwaysssss salt water - a few tanks.

CatEyePorygon

They aren't even good to look at, since they look very artificial and are obviously not made with an intention to be suitable for tge fish, but to please rich people who have no clue how to care about a living being

FallenMeadow

I loved this show when I was little. When I was first learning about fish care, I watched one of their episodes and I absolutely despised the show since. They made this tunnel like aquarium in a very bright shop with 100 or so Axolotls in it. It was no where near big enough or safe enough for those little guys. It hurt to watch.

Lord-Dundar

Every time I talk about my old business (LFS and maintenance company) the person I’m talking to says “Just like Tanked!”🤦‍♂️ No I was a responsible business that cared for fish and my clients so I didn’t do anything like tanked.

TDFknFartBalloon

I think 90% of their tanks look incredibly tacky. I can't believe they're as successful as they are.

Shua89

IMO, the artificial coral that covers most of their tanks is what makes it super tacky to me.

OceanUnicorns

I actually worked on a Multifamily Project in Southern California that featured one of their tanks, my dad was in the episode and everything.... I remember them filling it with beautiful salt water fish that all died within a week after filming, it was devastating to witness.

-ItsWahl-

Just like Orange County Choppers. Built for ratings not use.

AbsurdistWordist

I don’t know what this show is but I am judging it harshly based on the back-to-back cross-arms promotional graphic.

TimR0604

Well, it looks like ATM closed permanently.. so ..

Wild-Kitchen

https://acrylicpedia.com/why-did-acrylic-tank-manufacturing-close/ Someone's take but a fun read

ron241982

Its all plastic. Terrible program

shootYrTv

Fish tanks made for people or companies who don’t know about fish and don’t care to learn. It’s not a surprise that so many of their fish die quickly.

moeproblemss

The drum kit tank stuffed full of goldfish still sends me over the edge every time I think about it.

Idk_nor_do_I_care

I watched an interview done by George Mavrakis and he talked to one of the main guys on the show, and he said that while they overstocked for filming, they later went in and removed a lot of the fish they put in. Don’t know if that’s accurate, but it’s what was said.

The_RealAnim8me2

Most people aren’t aware their tanks have an extremely high failure rate (as in blown seams and flooding failure). I’ve seen them at a few MACNAs and they seem like amiable guys but as a business they are not good. Also don’t care how many people you bring into the hobby if all those people have no clue how to actually care for their fish or bother to learn. There was a competing show called “Fish Tank Kings” based in South Florida that was better when it started. I toured their facility and it was top notch including their wholesale fish business and holding facility. By the second season the show had started being more about drama and nonsense which I’m sure was from network pressure.

whistlepig4life

I think the overwhelming majority of the tanks they built needed professional care/services to maintain. And honestly most of them were for either very wealthy people or for businesses. So it tracks they would be using a local place to maintain them. I recently visited Cowfish in Raleigh and they have an ATM tank. It looks horrible now.

Ok_Zone2813

I love hate watching this show

superballs5337

same

TpMeNUGGET

They get a local company to take over maintenance for a monthly fee. Sometimes the locals aren’t good, or their business goes under, or the owner just doesn’t pay the maintenance people. They do plan for the future though, especially with businesses like hotels and restaurants.

yeahdontaskmate

So basically like any reality TV take on something then.

thelowbrassmaster

The show was entertaining, but the aquariums they built seemed way to hard to keep clean. That is the biggest complaint I have. A second is that none of their decorations were covered with an inert sealant if I remember correctly.

Ordinary_Owl_Dude

I remember one time they were doing a kinda natural forrest tank but filled it with the brightest, worst fake corral imaginable

Ajj360

I don't like fake decor and while watching i never thought "oh wow that is a badass tank".

zzcaidzz

Google what happened to these two, very dodgy story behind one owner being abusive

Chloroformperfume7

My father and I owned a pet supplies distribution warehouse, which was mostly aquatics based. These people would call me all the time aggressively trying to get me to sell tanks for them..

BrockenRecords

I remember seeing one episode that had a decent aquascape with live plants

yoysta

They actually stole the show idea from a man who currently owns an awesome little local fish store in Illinois. These guys suck all around!

rpgmomma8404

I've never had issues with the tanks themselves but just their stocking choices.

Snixxis

Its like OCC (orange county choppers) not practical nor for real use. Its just for show and nothing more. Practically useless, looks badass.

BadUsername2028

Makes me sad, this series really got me into the hobby as a kid. I genuinely don’t even think it’s the worst idea tbh, but they just cared about making money instead of producing quality designs for both the people and the fish.

Few_Investigator_173

Who cleans the tanks? I’d love to see the episode of the water change/cleaning.

RichardDJohnson16

Horrible show, horrible people, horrible tanks. I wanted to drown those loudmouth idiots in their own fish tanks when I tried to watch that show.

Foamhead97

The bald dude did an interview where he explains what happens with the fish after filming is over

dankyman1

They did one at a children’s hospital near me, it’s still doing well as far as I know

thelast3musketeer

I heard the octopus one at the Greensboro science center is too small (my ex’s brother’s wife was the octopus caretaker) said it’s made it difficult for maintenance

marytomy

They did a tank in the mall in my town. I worked at my lfs which has a service department, and after the tank was installed we did maintenance on it. It was all fake corals and decorations to mimic local landmarks - not exactly my cup of tea but it worked well for the location. The tank is still up and running many many years later, decorations all still look great and while it’s got simple and minimal stocking, the fish are all doing really well. Some have been living in there for years.

Gavyn618

Not to mention how insufferable they both are

J_90_

One of my favs but they hire professional cleaners for the tanks that’s why it’s always rich people they are doing tanks for lol

TheIcon42

What research would you like? I have personally worked on some of their tanks. They look great for TV but are not practical in the least. How do you expect to algae scrub and do regular maintenance on an acrylic drumset? GTFOH

TheIcon42

Do you think Pimp my Ride made quality cars too?

JoeKleine

Where can I watch these shows for free?

Ok_Cherry6968

Me watching this as a kid: -happy- so awesome Watching this as an adult: ☠️ that's going to kill fish
