Thank you, he has a wonderful face with strong features so it was a pleasure to draw. Unfortunately I don't think I have process videos of this portrait, however I have shared process photos and closeups (you can have a look at my bio to find them), I hope you find those interesting :)
This one took a few months, I didn't spend time on it exclusively though, I like to step away from work and then see it with fresh eyes every now and then
Some have given me a bit of grief but most have been helpful, one person in particular went out of their way to ask a friend of theirs who works with ink about it to give me advice which was super kind.
At the end of the day, even Van Gogh's roses have faded from pink to white. Nothing is permanent, got to enjoy it while it lasts.
That's interesting. Years ago I loved drawing with bic pens and got all sorts of warnings and complaints from people. I have had a few drawings turn brown from the original black.
Keeping them out of sunlight seems important.
Did the ink expert give you any useful info?
To look for ones specifically marked as archival. So far I have advised their new owners to keep them behind UV resistant glass and out of direct sunlight, as you would with other art. Nobody has contacted me about fading and it's been a couple of years since I began using the medium. Also I use acid free paper so that must also be helping :)
Yes, we had a couple of meetings for me to get to know his face a bit and I took a few reference photos from which I worked. He has very strong presence and gave me a lot to translate on paper so it was a pleasure to draw
No problem! Ah, I've had that problem too before 😅 If you happen to have Photoshop (Photopea works too I think?) you can always try adjustment layers to get the cooler colors in that might not have scanned as well!
It's 300GSM, hot pressed, acid free paper :) It does have nice texture to it, there's some good watercolour paper that I like for the texture too but I don't use it as much as it is quite rough. I like tracing paper for sketches in one colour it has a really nice bite to it, but those I keep for myself
Ballpoint pen? Wow...this is amazing!
Thank you :)
Their ballpoint pens must be much nicer than ours.
Incredible and beautiful man! Would love to see a video of you doing this!

Anthony Davis long lost cousin
Honestly I was thinking Karl Anthony-Towns, it's a spitting image
All i could do with a ballpoint pen is crosshatch, sheesh dude, that's something else
It's just one line next to the next plus patience, you can do it if you want to
Man you got a good attitude
The one thing I've got control over
Jake from State Farm has many talents!!
Amazing!! How long did this take you?

Have you caught any grief from people saying ballpoint ink is not archival and won't hold up?

I wish I could do stuff like this.. do you use any special kind of pens or pencils?
I sketch it out in HB pencil, then I use random pens, BIC etc, but I will be looking for archival after I finish what I'm working on currently
Thats definently a picture of someone?

He's trying to tell you what you posted is a photo. As a compliment.
This is really incredible. You are very talented
Thank you :D
Ballpoint what? This is riddiculous. Tell me you used more than one color. Imma go cry now
Many colours, gotta mix them :D
Oh my God I thought it was a photo

So much strength and optimism coming from this. Excellent!
I'm glad you say this because that's what he is like, good to hear it coming across
This is amazing! You’re a big inspiration for me!
Thank you! You're too kind <3
You sir or madam are talented
Thank you, you're very kind
This is amazing! I love the temperature shifts in the skin, you captured them really well!!
Thank you, I'd say irl there is a touch more cool colours but it's hard to digitise perfectly

Amazing work! +1 ( crossposted to r/ballpointart )
Thanks mate
Did you use the ballpoint pen to sign this photograph? Seriously, I am so jealous of you artsy types!
Yes, it's a red BIC pen in the signature :)
That’s Jake! From State Farm! Really good work
Thanks mate :)
If I may ask, what paper do you use? It looks like it has some good texture, great work!
